I'm 20 years old now, I grew up eating here for every special occasion of my life. Birthdays, graduations, etc. Every single time my parents asked me where I wanted to celebrate, the answer was always Peking Dragon. It's sad to see the direction this restaurant headed. Such is the cycle of life. I'll never forget the disappointment I'd felt when my family first tried the food under the new ownership. A grimace of sheer horror akin to a child finding out Santa isn't real. This restaurant was everything I could've ever asked for and more. Shane, if you are reading this, I wanted to thank you for contributing to so many happy memories in my life. Thank you for watching me grow up into the man I am today. Authentic Chinese restaurant in Dana Point. The decor and lighting is perfect for date night, or a group outing. There's even a private dining room for a special event like a birthday or engagement dinner. The staff is super friendly too, and very attentive. Several different workers, not just our waitress, came to our table to make sure we had everything we needed. Loved that! Now to the food! There were so many dishes that I wanted to try! The sesame chicken was what I finally decided on, and it was so good! Slightly fried and perfectly sauced! I added a side of the pork fried rice and it was phenomenal! And at the end of the meal, you get a complimentary mini cup of Matcha ice cream to go with your fortune cookie. Great Chinese restaurant owned by real Chinese people which is wonderful. The service is impeccable and the menu has lots of options. Kitchen is very willing to accommodate for vegetarians. We had the green beans and the spicy tofu all without meat. Both were delicious with white rice. I highly enjoyed the vegetable mushu which this is the first time I've ever seen it hit the table nicely pre-wrapped. I love that the food here isn't very greasy. Wish they had veggie wontons and potstickers but at least they do have veggie egg rolls. Good place to celebrate a family bday or just to have a really enjoyable family dinner. read more

Two weeks ago. This was my daughter's favorite restaurant as a young girl and now she's 20, so we've been going for a long time! Knew something was up when I walked in to order some food to go. Typically, full restaurant with Shane/family greeting people with smiles, etc. NOW, the man at the desk said, "You order online?" "No. I'd like to make an order for takeout." "Online order best way. I used to come here for years. It's been a while since I was here last. Then, today I decided to take my sister and niece here for lunch. It seems so empty. It used to be so packed with people all the time. After our lunch, I know exactly why there's no customers. The management has changed 2 years ago. Now the food is so bad. The Special crispy noodle Chow-mein was so bad. They used fat noodles that so hard to chew. Hot and Sour soup didn't taste like hot and sour soup. I don't think they have a Chinese chef. read more

We actually were looking to head to a more beachy seen on Fourth of July... We couldn't find anything open past 2 o'clock ... I am so glad we called Peking Dragon. Not only was the food so delicious. We brought a bottle of our wine and were not charged a corkage fee. The service was outstanding. Everything was presented with a smile. They gave us a little sip of lychee juice right as we sat down, and then for dessert, they gave us each a lychee fruit which was so refreshing and so unexpected.... I would say out of everything, the potstickers, and the ribs were the most satisfying and delicious and flavorful. We also had the king pau chicken, coconut shrimp with candied, walnuts, broccoli beef .. all very tasty... It's such a shame this used to be one of the best Chinese food restaurants around. Our family has been going there for years. I continued even with the new owners. Well I ordered food...this time for Xmas Eve which we do every year and it just wasn't good again. Not the great food it used to be...just mediocre now. The part that actually annoyed me the most was the 18% tip added to take out. Now in saying this I'm a good tipper and I appreciate good food and good service. I also usually tip when I pick up food but not as much as eating in. But to not want to take my order unless I agreed to the 18%...that is just not right at least in my opinion. Well the bottom line to all of this is I guess I'll be looking for a new chinese food restaurant to go to...so sad because I will miss all the good memories my family has had there through the years. read more

Been coming here for 20 years with my mom and then with my own family. It used to be incredible. I didn't even mind the 90's decor, it was part of the vibe. The sizzling rice soup was so good it was almost healing. When they sold it nothing tasted the same. I also ordered a lemon drop and they literally gave me gin in a martini glass with lemon juice!!! I got that old school, rich in tradition and loving family vibe the moment I entered this massive restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway, 1.5 miles south and east of my hotel. Everyone greeted me warmly as the relay handed me off to my awesome and fun server. I had perused the website and the lunch specials and ordered the Mandarin Prawns - deep fried prawns marinated with hot n sweet sauce, cooked with chopped onions and broccoli( my add on) plus white or fried rice. Have you ever taken the first bite of a fried prawn in sauce and experienced the flavor come bursting through the mini batter making you try to curb that loud ooooooh as both eyes got really big? I did that 14 times in lieu of Valentine's Day. This was the best and I mean the absolute best dish I have ever had. Yes Ray Ray was in Beijing oops Peking eating great food at the 2008 Olympics and in Hong Kong dozens of times. Not even close! The soup was gorgeous. Perfect blend, hot, sour, tasty, yummy, flavorful and light. The egg roll - we need a separate page. Crunchy, piping hot and the filling - Wowza! Loved the great servers who kept refilling my glass of water and getting my clumsy tukhas extra napkins. The owner had a wicked sense of humor. The food here is very delicious. As far as I know, they used to run a business in Garden Grove a long time ago, and I remember the food being excellent back then as well. However, since moving to this new location, they no longer offer dishes like Jajangmyeon or Jjamppong, which is quite disappointing. That said, the other dishes are still very tasty, and the ingredients used are of high quality. Unfortunately, the service is very poor. The staff are quite unfriendly and even rude at times. If you're eating slowly or having a conversation during your meal, they will come and stand close to your table, clearly giving off a sense that they want you to hurry up. As soon as you're done eating, if you don't get up right away, a server will come over and tell you that since you're finished, they need the table for the next guests. If you live nearby, I would recommend ordering to-go. But if you have to dine in because you live far away, be prepared to eat quickly and leave soon after. My family and friends have been loyal customers of Peking Dragon since the early 1990's. Over that time we enjoyed both the dining experience and "Take-Out." The original owner (Shane), his family and staff always made you feel welcomed and provided exceptional customer service and food. Unfortunately, the new owners/management have severely tarnished this once great restaurant's reputation, with poor service, rude/disrespectful customer service and less than quality tasting and presentation of food. Let me first start by saying, like so many other customers we have been coming to Peking Dragon for over 20 years. I usually rave about it, as it's the closest thing to East Coast Chinese food as you'll get. Again, like everyone else, we loved Shane. He made the experience. But pass that it was the food that really kept us coming back. The new management staff is nice, but they are changing too many things. I had two of my favorite dishes now change. The interesting part was I was told that I was wrong on one of them. They change their Peking duck, from the soft Lotus buns to now , the classic Moo shu wraps. The flavor is still good, but you lose the tradition of the lotus buns, that make for an amazing Peking duck dish. We came in last night, our waiter last night was amazing as usual, we had my grandson with us for one of his first trips out to dinner ever, he seven months old. Jimmy absolutely entertained him the whole night again the food was very good. My other favorite are the four eggrolls at Peking dragon. The pictures are all over yelp. They are the classic East Coast eggrolls. I ordered an order to go, so did not see the eggrolls until I got home for lunch this afternoon. I was very disappointed to find that they are now the standard spring roll type. That is all the flat outside wonton wrap like most low end Chinese restaurants have. They changed yet another menu item for the worst. To the new owners, you purchased a great restaurant, there was never anything that needed to be changed at that restaurant. Came to PK for lunch as it was on my list for sometime to visit while staying in Dana Point. It is difficult to find really good Chinese in the area with the exception of Asian Kitchen in Laguna Niguel. Ordered the Mandarin prawns with fried rice with a hot sour soup and side of fried chicken to start. I was served a fried chicken neck bone and a strange thigh bone. The prawns (tasteless) were heavily breaded and deep fried before a spicy sweet sauce is put on top. The sauce wasn't bad, but it wasn't spicy either as I requested. It's been quite some time since I had been here and I'm wishing this was closer to home. Peking Dragon is a nice Chinese restaurant off Golden Lantern in Dana Point. Parking is a bit tight but plentiful. We arrived here about 630pm on Sat 3/18. The restaurant was busy, yet we were seated right away. Kevin was out server and he was friendly and offered great suggestions from the menu. We decided on: War Wonton soup, Mongolian Beef, and Kung pao Chicken (it's apparently a very popular dish). The soup was amazing, and I loved the generous shrimp, wonton, broccoli, carrot, and so many other vegetables. The Mongolian Beef was tender and flavorful, and the Kung Pao chicken had a nice kick . The place has "good food" reputation but I believe undeserved. It is understood China is a big country and the food style is different depending on the area of the country. We have been dining here for 25 years. I think tonight is the last time. I get raising prices but they cut the portions. Not great service either. Our favorite was always the hot & sour soup. We miss Shane! Have been coming since 1989 and since Shane has retired the service and food are not at all what they use to be. Still giving 4 stars as its been one of my favorites for so long, but they really need to have Shane critic and improve their business. And Christmas Eve was a total disaster! Always extremely busy but Shane was always prepared for it. I think they lost many customers that night. Love that they've added Mondays though. I called to place a take out order and I was on hold for 15 minutes . I hung up and called back but because they forgot about me it was busy . ( called for an additional 10 minutes. Went in person and told them how pissed I was but I got a sorry . Took home are food and it was terrible and we got sick. We gave them three opportunities to make us regular customers again but they failed. We are done. read more

Amazing experience! A friend took me out for lunch, I let her choose this location and it was a good choice, I was very pleased with her selection and taste in food. The location is excellent, the interior is cute and ambience was great! I got the almond chicken for lunch and it came with a sweet and sour soup, a delicious egg roll which came with sweet and shout sauce, hot mustard and a spicy Chile sauce. I didn't try the mustard sauce because it had never been appealing to me. The other 2 sauces were perfect. The almond chicken was very flavorful, the balance of chicken and vegetables was perfect. Seasoning was excellent! The fried rice was fabulous, I can't decide if I liked that more than the almond chicken but it was delicious. Ambience was great! Seems this is a hit with the locals. Customer service could have been better but not gonna knock off stars because of that. It seems that the food makes up for what was lacking in customer service. Truly heartbreaking. This is where I learned to love Chinese food and had countless great dinners over many, many years. The original owners sold around a year ago and the quality of the food has plummeted. On my last visit, my favorite dishes were practically unrecognizable and flavorless. Things had been hit or miss with our past few visits but this last time was awful in every way. Why buy an existing, well respected restaurant and then destroy it? I went to Peking for lunch and ordered the Mandarin Prawns, my favorite, for 30+ years. Well it's not my favorite anymore! The shrimp were coated in a thick flour batter and had an unpleasant flavor. I literally removed the coating after the first one I tasted, on each shrimp. The fried chicken appetizer was a different recipe too, and not in a good way. After 40 years of being 'The Place to Go' for Chinese cuisine in Dana Point, the new owners have made a fatal mistake. They have changed the taste and quality of the food, which is what made the Peking Dragon so famous. I called in a takeout order at 4:45 pm on Friday and was told they were out of vegetarian egg rolls. The dinner hour hadn't even started! When we opened our cartons, we knew things had changed. The color of the food was different than it has been for decades. Our garlic fried chicken was unrecognizable as the same dish and the House special chow mien did not look or taste the same.
