The significance of this place is aside from the fact that it's good food , this is the last standing Chaldean restaurant in Chaldean town unless somebody's added something in the last year or two. I came here for the first time today with six other people. My buddy's cousin raves about this place. It is not a very big place, and it looks very divey, but don't let that stop you from going here. The kitchen is wide open, so you can see everything going on. We all ordered the Lamb Shank, by the way, was delicious. The guy working and making to food was very busy and quickly preparing the food. He was also nice and friendly and made you feel very welcome. I was Todays's years old that I learned about Chaldean Town and the history of it. And that Sullaf is the last man standing from that. Food is good; there is no menu. In the middle of a area that has been completely burned down or left to crumble, Sulaf is still there catering to local business men who know how good the food is, I have been eating here for 20 years his special spices kari still blows away any I have ever had. His beef shawarma n rice no one even comes close to this taste! He might not be very presentable as far as the resturant goes n the people sitting there but the food is amazing! Let me start by saying that the food here is very good and worth the awkwardness of the place itself... This place would get five stars if they knew how to deal with customers. They know how to cook a great meal, one of the best plates you can get for the price, but they don't know how to take an order (they don't even have a menu to look at), seat a table, communicate with the general public, etc. They could probably attract diners from far and wide if they got these simple business basics right. Most people probably wouldn't be comfortable going in the place, but the food makes it worthwhile. It seems like all the other rest of the places in Chaldean Town went under, so this is the last place, and probably the only Chaldean/Assyrian restaurant left in Detroit.. even it if wasn't, it'd still give other places decent competition. I don't know if this place has solid hours, but they're usually open during the day.. so give them a try! Example of the food: a kufta sandwich, a chicken kabob plate (with rice, veggies, and pickles), and three bowls of stew (one okra, one white bean, and one curried potato).. enough for feed three hungry people easily, $18. The kitchen is open, so you can see everything being prepared and everything is made to order. A true hole in the wall type place with ten tables and an open kitchen!!! The owner/chef comes over and tells you what he has made fresh for that day and you tell him what you want. Obviously, it is not a vast menu. But everything He brought us was delicious. Between three of us we had grilled chicken, lamb shanks, and a huge salad along with rice, curry soup and spinach soup. We couldn't finish it all. 25 bucks all in. Unbelievable. It's not going to win any decoration awards. But you don't have to wonder about the kitchen because it's right there to see. Props to Sullaf - it is, as far as I can tell, the last surviving business in the neighborhood once known as Chaldean Town. If you head east on 7 Mile just east of Woodward, you'll notice numerous abandoned storefronts, bakeries, and kebab restaurants that once made up a thriving ethnic community in Detroit (you can read more about Chaldean Town's decline in Ze'ev Chafets excellent 1990 book "Devil's Night: And Other True Tales of Detroit"). While the neighborhood may have fallen on hard times, Sullaf is still going strong, and judging by how packed the place was on a weekday afternoon, plenty of folks, both Chaldean and other, still come to the area just to eat here. The restaurant is run entirely by two gruff but friendly fellows - there's no menu, and as the waiter/head chef/owner (?) put it, "people know what we have." My friend and I each ordered a lamb shank meal with rice, and we also shared some white bean stew and potato curry. The lamb shank was tender and perfectly done, while the stews were rich and flavorful and pleasingly simple. Everything is served with sides of white long-grain rice, pita bread, and some raw vegetables, including the pickled yellow cabbage that I've come to know and love at suburban Chaldean/Assyrian restaurants like Sahara and New Sands in Oak Park. Overall, however, Sullaf felt a lot more uniquely Chaldean than these spots, which feature many generic "Mediterranean" dishes alongside more authentic dishes from the Iraqi Christian tradition. And here's the kicker - our entire meal, including two whole lamb shanks, came in at under $20. This is about as good of a deal as you're likely to find anywhere, and the regulars here are apparently well aware of that. Sullaf is a unique and wonderful lil' hole in the wall, so don't let the bad neighborhood deter you - do your part to keep a local treasure - and perhaps the last restaurant of its kind - in business! read more

Best Iraqi food in Michigan- maybe in the US! Of course the pickled cucumber, zucchini and cabbage is outstanding, but the holy trinity is the lamb shanks, ghallaba and kebob (kafta). Flavors, texture and spices are unmatchable. Order for carry out or dine in. If you dine in, park directly across the street - but you may want to travel with friends (and protection) as it is not the safest of neighborhoods. But the reward is far worth the "risk". What a dining experience. Sure, there are no menus or listed prices. Yes, the hours as best as I've determined are 11-6 pm, Monday-Saturday. No, the neighborhood is not the most jumping, and no it's not dangerous. But, wow, was that a great meal. My friend and I both had lamb with potato curry, served with rice, pita, and vegetables. It was delicious, well seasoned, and the lamb fell off the bone. The environment is spotless, the food comes quickly. And, to top it all off, a random gentleman paid our bill! We were taken aback. We took care of two guys next to us to keep the good karma going. I can't wait to go back and get some shwarma. If I worked in Ferndale, I would totally suggest going down there for a change of pace lunch. You will not be disappointed, and your friends will think you're cool. We had a great meal at Sullaf. Totally unfamiliar with Chaldean cooking, as well as the style of service - no menus, no prices, you get what they got and they charge what they charge - but pleasantly surprised with both. On the plate this day was a choice between lamb and chicken, served with white rice, plenty of bread, saucy white beans, and spicy potato curry. Also a small bowl with fresh onions, tomatoes, and pickled cabbage. It was all very tasty and satisfying - my wife and I especially liked the potato curry and probably could have eaten a whole meal of just that over rice, with some of the delicious fresh-pickled cabbage. The meal was followed by a lovely cup of tea. We really liked it that the chef made our little boy a special plate of his own, and the woman who served us our meal was very good with him and promised him a special treat at the end of the meal (it was gum!). For all this food, and the wonderful service, the total bill was only $20. A bargain for sure, and we will certainly be coming back next time we're around Detroit! read more

i used to live up near 7 mile, and long wanted to eat at some of the chaldean spots that line 7 mile. i was on a mission up that way and so myself and a friend tried to find a place to eat. sullas - or as the business card i picked up listed it - sullaf was just about the only place that seemed open. it's by far the brightest and cleanest of the bunch of 7 mile. first problem in ordering - no menu - the clerk just told us to tell him what we wanted - so i went with the safe option - falafel. the place seems to do a very brisk carry out business and not wanting to rock the boat we followed suit. while waiting we were offered tea several times by staff, who seemed down right offended that we did not want any in spite of the fact that it was free. i'll be prepared to take them up on the offer next time. but what about that falafel? it was great and a little shocking. first was the condiments - it came with two little tubs - one ranch - which i passed on - the other a spicy, slightly bitter, sour sauce - which after some debate we decided was harissia - a sauce made from hot pepper and pickled lemons. could be wrong but it was great no matter what. the other surprise was the pickled cabbage. not sauerkraut, but whole pickle leaves - crisp and sour and oh so lovely. i think it might be the best falafel i have ever had if only for the toppings. next time i go, i'll just ask the clerk to make me what he would order for lunch - and i look forward to checking out other spots along 7 mile read more
