I do think for the price, this is a very approachable and affordable option for those interested in a more omakase style dinner. However, I feel like the execution was subpar. The fish quality was just okay, and some cuts were a bit too mushy for my taste. The sushi rice was also too soft and warm imo. The presentation was also lackluster. I do think that the flavor combinations themselves (like the seasonings and ingredient pairings) + the handrolls were solid though. The servers were very sweet and understanding. This is our go to for sushi as it has a nice ambiance, great food, and great service. We ordered 5 of the same order, but for the first 4 courses, only 4 would come out and the 5th person's much later. They continued to apologize and finally at the very end, everything came out together. I know they were trying to get it right and compensated at the end. I don't know what's up with this location, but I think today was the last time I can visit Sugarfish La Brea. There's always been a funky smell in the bathroom, but today, it pervaded through the whole bar. I've never had a more uncomfortable meal. It was like a mix of rotten fish and sewage omg so gross. Also, this location consistently has worst quality control on their dishes. The rice is much too hot, and as a result, crumbles everywhere. Some of my fish were missing sauces too. The most mid sugarfish experience ever. The serves had no idea what they were doing and two of them came because one was training. But the trainee did not know how to explain anything, because she was slurring her words, and the other person kept correcting her in front of us. Plates were given out and then taken back...it was a mess. We didn't get our unagi order and they said, "you didn't get it?" Very unprofessional for the establishment that they are. Obviously, food was solid, but usually you go to sugarfish for the "seamless experience" along with the solid quality of the fish, but that wasn't the case this time. RIP read more

Overall, I really liked it. The omakase options are all very affordable for the amount of fish/food you get, ranging from $35-$60. They won't seat you until your entire party is present, but they did offer me water while I waited for the rest of my party. There were a few seats at the bar and plenty of tables (albeit overall a small restaurant). Staff was attentive and came by quickly, although the kitchen made a mistake and sent out the wrong plate (in the wrong ordering) so we effectively got a free plate, which did not detract at all from the experience. However, the dining room at dinner basically had no lighting at all, except for the candles on the table, which made it nearly impossible to read the menu without using your phone flashlight. Not entirely sure what mood they were going for, but I still like to be able to see the food I'm eating as well as the people I'm dining with. Nonetheless, we were notified that one fish in the omakase was being substituted and were offered other options if the sub was not to our liking. In addition (or instead of), there is also an a la carte menu to order from. The other notable thing is that the rice was far too warm for the hand rolls, but I still enjoyed them though. All in all, I would come back to Sugarfish. It was a great value for price if you are a sushi lover. No parking lot, just street parking, but a convenient location with friendly staff. read more

We all went with the "I trust, you decide" option, and our faith was not misplaced! A variety of nigiri and hand rolls after a edamame appetizer. The Otoro was the best cut of fatty tuna I have ever had (I am by no means a sushi expert, but my goodness it was the most succulent piece of fish I have had)! Not only was the service decent and the fish fresh, but VERY reasonably priced especially considering LA prices! Worth a stop on your way through the neighborhood! We were also given the check before our meal was finished, and no one confirmed whether all of our dishes had arrived. We waited for the extra items we had ordered, only to learn later--without any explanation--that they were sold out. Another concern was that the tip was automatically added to the bill. With the service being less attentive than expected, it didn't feel appropriate for the tip to be pre-calculated. Met a friend for dinner here after work on a Tuesday. Parking is a bit tricky, and I ended up in a garage down an alleyway behind the restaurant. Just be aware that it's pretty dimly lit and the walk was a bit far. Worth it though, cause I love SUGARFISH! We both ordered the Trust Me, which comes with edamame, tuna sashimi in a ponzu and chive sauce, albacore sushi, salmon sushi with toasted sesame, toro hand roll, yellowtail sushi with lemon, blue and dungeoness crab handroll, and instead of the Hirame sushi with yuzu ponzu, I believe we got toro instead. Everything was fresh and delicious. They always have warm rice with their sushi which makes it so much better. Got the uni and another toro on the side as well. Both were great. Our server was very attentive the whole night as well. Overall, a great dinner! Coming here is so dangerous for me! I live within walking distance of this location and would come here every day if I could. The sushi here is consistently fresh and always guaranteed to be mouthwatering. You can't go wrong with ordering the Trust Me meals and I also love the Crab handrolls and oftentimes will order a few extra if just those. The restaurant is on the smaller side so you may have to wait during busy times but trust me it's worth it! Takeout is also easy and they present the meals in clean/easy takeout boxes with dividers so the rolls don't touch. read more

MAJOR UPDATE: I was reached out by an overseeing manager letting me know to come in again for another try and to get 2 comp a la carte items from the menu. I've always heard good things about sugarfish so decided to give this place a second run, and I'm so happy I did. I was greeted by their manager from the beginning and he explained for the mishap that happened a few weeks ago and that ultimately it was a miscommunication. We proceeded to order the Nozawa Trust Me menu, which all fish were in stock and available and we were so pleased with the quality from start to finish!! Fish is beyond fresh and truly melts in your mouth. We got a round of albacore in the set and it's truly the best albacore I've ever had, so creamy and soft, not as lean as most other places have it. All other items in this set were *chefs kiss and flavor was on point. Portions are excellent and this sushi shop definitely makes you consider quality of quantity (especially since my partner and I usually frequent AYCE locations) As for the comp items we got a limited special of Anago and Hirame. Both were fresh and yummy. We especially loved the Anago (eel) because it was more meaty vs skin, which is usually how eel ends up. Service was impeccable! The manager continuously checked in on us and kept making sure our food was coming out promptly. The experience felt very personable and I appreciated that they took the time to make sure our experience today was nothing but great. Also felt appreciated to know that our reviews are being heavily regarded in their business. Ambiance is clean and tidy. Seating is quite limited, but customers and in and out consistently, so wait times seem manageable. Coming here during the day also brightens up the scene and I preferred this ambiance over the nighttime one since it was brighter and welcoming. Parking can be difficult. We came on a Friday afternoon and had to park a block or two away at a meter, but truly was worth it for the experience we received. If you have never had SUGARFISH you are sadly missing out. Fish is always fresh on top of a bed of warm rice. Nothing to ornate just good old fashioned excellent tasting sushi. They have prefixed menu such as the Nozawa Trust me, Trust me or the trust me lite which is a smaller version. They also gave different a la carte options too but I always get the nozawa trust me. Service is always very efficient and friendly. Tables are always too close for comfort but it's ok. Most of their locations really cram in the table into a small space. Sugarfish used to be my go to sushi lunch with colleagues but I hadn't been in years. Although I wanted a burger I was convinced to go to the fairfax location for dinner. The restaurant was packed. I had the Trust Me, which was more than enough. The sushi was similar to what I remember but something about the edamame is so good here. It was pretty chaotic. Pretty tasty! I got the Trust Me Nozawa and subbed the blue dungeness crab roll at the end for another toro hand roll. My favorite piece was the albacore with yuzu and green onions on the top, definitely recommend another plate of this if you're still hungry. The bathrooms were clean and this might be the most well lit Sugarfish I've been to. Parking is hit or miss on the streets, but we parked in the residential area and walked over within 5 minutes. Let me start by saying we eat at sugarfish 4-6 times a month and have been for more than 10 year and have never left a review. It's time. I would like to say the service is perfect but there are a few employees I would like to call out as always perfect. A perfect employee is hard to find and these servers and managers are great Max she is so polite and polished she will definitely be manger one day if she wants it. Natalie in BH store same for her management material, she is awesome. As for the managers David in the BH store total gentleman and class act. As for the La brea manager Nick what a great guy with a great personality love to see him when we walk in. One more sever/ manger Brandon is a total gentleman and very good person. My gf and I decided to give Sugarfish another shot, super thankful for the manager that confronted us and was able to help us enjoy our meal to the fullest. I appreciate how all the employees work. On Sundays, there is a possibility of them running out of fish from the Trust Me Menus! We pulled up after 1pm and parking is metered, it's $1 per hour. We used up an hour and half. Since it is on the block with other shops, parking is limited and we ended up parking 2 blocks down near the Trader's Joes. I would usually take off a star because of the metered parking and how inconvenient the parking is, but the service we received was above and beyond. The quality of fish is one-of-a-kind. It's tender and pulls apart and also so fresh with no fishy smell. I was expecting the pieces to be small, mainly because I go to a lot of AYCE sushi, but I love the size of these pieces. The ambiance inside is clean and tidy. It's a bit small but perfect for a table for 2 or even 4. They have 2 gender neutral restrooms. At night, this spot is very dark and it can be hard to see inside. This has to be the best omakase sushi spot I've ever been to with the fish being so fresh and pieces were perfect size. We will definitely be back again and make sure to check out another location. read more

I've always wanted to come here and we ended up passing by so we stopped for a light lunch. I thought it was a bit odd that their take out menu is different from dine-in, especially with the price differences too. We shared a trust me and everything was very good but I don't even know if we would've been full if we got our own set instead of sharing. I also feel like they took a long time to bring out each item and other people were getting their food a lot faster. Service was pretty friendly and it wasn't too busy when we went. OMG! I am so happy when they open this restaurant and I know the first few times I went I always had to wait but more recently over the past year. The waiting time have been much more reasonable. And is with all sugar fish I enjoy the Omakasa style, and you simply need to "trust them". I have never been disappointed with any of the sushi items I have been served and will always come back for decent fresh sushi. Very reasonably priced as well. This is a nice spot, very classy, very accommodating wait staff. There's limited street parking and beware parking restrictions. And the kitchen to not give salt to the customer for their edamame is SO stupid. I received my edamame and I wanted a little more salt. The waiter said the kitchen seasons it perfect. Well not for my taste buds. He brought it back and the kitchen added salt. Well they don't know my tasted buds and they added too much salt. I gave up and ate it. Ever since moving to LA, Sugarfish was highly recommended to try. This was my first location I've tried and I was hooked. The interior design of this location is well thought out, minimalistic, and clean. This location relies on street parking, but there is an plenty nearby. Service is quick and efficient, cleaning up you plates right away and ensuring drinks are filled. In regard to the food, I usually order the Nozawa Trust Me which is $39 (lunch) and $46 (dinner). I would consider myself a fellow big back, and say that this is a good amount of food for the quality and value you pay for. You can always order à la carte if needed. It consists of the following: Edamame Tuna Sashimi - ponzu and chives Albacore Sushi - ponzu and chives, 2-pc Salmon Sushi - toasted sesame, 2-pc Toro Hand Roll Japanese Yellowtail* Sushi - lemon, 2-pc Chutoro Sushi , 2-pc Hirame* Sushi - yuzu ponzu, 1-pc New Zealand Sea Bream* Sushi - citrus salt, 1-pc Blue & Dungeness Crab Hand Roll I normally switch out the New Zealand Sea Bream for more Salmon, just a personal preference. I also save the leftover ponzu sauce from the Tuna Sashimi as an additional dipping sauce for my sushi. The biggest indicator if you'll leave happy is whether or not the rice is warm. Inconsistencies honestly make a difference, but this applies to all locations, not just this particular one. Wow, this place is amazing and so worth the hype. I've traveled to San Francisco and LA in the past year and this was a standout meal in terms of quality and value. I mean the $35 "trust me" menu really can't be beat. I was comfortably full. I like that it takes the guess work out of ordering. The only downside was they ran out of toro on the night I went, but they substituted yellowtail which was also really yummy. I also loved the tuna sashimi in ponzu sauce and sea bream. If you like yuzu there were also a few items with yuzu garnish. All the fish was super fresh and I like that they just let the ingredients speak for themselves. I also like that the menu is kind of minimal. They don't even have dessert - but it was fine because we were going for cocktails somewhere else after. I also got the nigori sake for only $12 and I thought because of the price it would just be a glass, but it was a whole bottle! It paired perfectly with the meal. Finally, I appreciate that there is a flat 16% restaurant fee added to all bills and that it is a no tipping restaurant. Just makes it really easy and stress-free to dine here. This location is quite small (there's no windows in the main dining area, just the window by the bar/entrance) and it has a dark, moody vibe. You may have to wait but it is worth it. We went on a weeknight around 6:30pm and were told it's a 30 mins wait for 3 people, but we got a table after 15-20 mins wait. There is a little seating area outside where you can wait. There is street parking nearby. Service is pretty fast and efficient. I would say this isn't the kind of place to linger over a 2-3 hour dinner (the people waiting outside will glare at you!) but great for a quick meal that doesn't sacrifice amazing quality. read more

This is a review for Sugarfish in general. The La Beea Location may be the smallest location, and the acoustics of dishes being bussed is noticeably loud. Sugarfish gets a solid 5 for being able to set the benchmark for sushi at a reasonable price. The service is equally as consistent as the fish.
