I went into the store as I was drawn like a child into the mesmerizing window displays of candy in every color shape you can imagine. If you've ever watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you'll recall the land of the Umpa Lumpas and that magical world of rivers made of milk chocolate, candy flowers and whip cream too. This store is not quite comparable to that, but it is a candy store and with some imagination one can transport themselves into a fun childhood fantasy. I've certainly been in much larger and elaborate candy stores, but this small shop gives all it can in the downtown San Anselmo shopping area. We checked this place out on New Year's Eve and were pleasantly surprised. They have a huge selection of bulk candy if you'd like to make your own bag. The woman working behind the counter was very friendly and made conversation with us. Besides bulk candy, they have popular candy bars, chocolate bars, and some toys. I really enjoyed the sticker section in the back - I feel stickers are underrated and should be sold at more stores! I also enjoyed the funny socks and different unicorn-themed items that were offered. I think the bulk candy price is a bit high, but what do you expect for the area it's located in? I might go back to get some fun novelty items, but not necessarily for my candy needs. It's absolutely a cute store and would be fun to take people of all ages to visit. read more

When you walk in to sugar you are immediately greeted by its friendly staff, who are available to help if needed but never pushy. I am usually at the licorice table filling up a weekly bag full of delicious sweets. The licorice table has an amazing assortment of different types of licorice from sweet to salty imported from Sweden, Holland, Finland and Australia. There's also a large assortment of other candies that have been around forever, jelly bellies and other specialty candies along with a giant gumball machine when you leave. I have four children and this by far is their favorite shop in town, it is a unique store that is a great addition to our community. read more

So I thought the idea of a candy store was to be welcomed in and to fee like a kid again. Our experience of the service was far from that. First of all we were not welcomed in or told how the system works. The staff member was extremely rude and pretentious. We were also told that HALF of the entire store was off limits because someone "rented" the store for a birthday party.... So you rent out a candy store, and simply deny access to half of the products to all other customers, that's absurd! To finally cap it off, we were told that we could "put down our candy and come back later to buy it" because apparently we were taking too long, IN A CANDY STORE? Every time we walk down San Anselmo Ave my two little girls want to stop into Sugar. This candy shop is very different from most candy shops. It has such a wide variety of candy. It actually has candy from when I was a kid so it brings back those great memories. The owner Devan is very helpful and friendly. We love to support local businesses and if you feel the same way stopping in here will not disappoint. If you like black licorice, this is a terrific source with a nice variety. My sister and I wandered in just to see what was there. Purchased three or four pieces each to try them out. Less than a block away we'd eaten them all and went back for a bag each. We are adding Sugar to our list of places to visit when we are down Marin way. The rest of the store is fun, too. Like a toned down version of that big chain that is chockablock full of stuff as if on steroids. We'll be back to Sugar. read more

Sugar is such a magical place, I have been their many times and I love it..The store is so beautiful, spacious, colorful, I love the chandeliers.. I met the owner Devon and she is such a sweet, warm and generous women.. It is like a heaven for kids and adults.. She has products from local artisans and she supports the community.. So many choices of licorice and chocolate which are my favorite and her test are so unique.. I would recommend Sugar to anyone , such a fun, "sweet" place to go.. This has a great selection of candies that are all very good. However, the prices are crazy. Less than half a bag of candy was 8 dollars, and you couldn't put any of it back once you had chosen. They said that it costed 8 dollars because it was 8 pounds. However, i could be wrong, but the bag felt nothing close to 8 pounds. It was a great setup but just a warning that it is VERY expensive and I'm not sure it's worth all the money. I understand that the woman may of been vaccinated, but she was not wearing a mask. I felt uncomfortable in this situation-coming from someone not vaccinated. She also could of been nicer, and ruined the fun candy vibes. Lastly, I told her I was only looking to spend 5 dollars, and she put 8 dollars worth of candy in the bag. Because you couldn't put any back, it was quite a rip-off. Since it should of been cheaper I though it was only going to be 5 dollars, but it was almost double. read more

Malted milk balls and sour gummy worms are my easy go to. I stop in about 2 times a month for my fix , and my co workers are always bringing backs bag to work for all of us to enjoy. The owners are fantastic and are true locals, I see them around town and they always recognize me and say hello. Most of the time their is a high school student or college age person working, and although cell phones are usually glued to their hands, not the case when I walk in. They are always nice and greet you. I also see them cleaning and tidying up as I'm sure candy tends to fall everywhere. The store looks clean and modern. read more

My mommy friends and I spend lots of money here. Birthday favors, gifts, etc. Never again. You can buy candy anywhere-- Miette's, target, Amazon, even Comforts down the street has a great selection-- but I come here because it's fun for the kids. It's not fun when the employees are rude and unnecessary snarky to paying customers and to children!!! Just really terrible, patronizing attitude. Great variety of candy and extremely helpful staff! Such a nice addition to downtown San Anselmo, and I will definitely be back. Everything is set up very nicely, and the store is impeccably clean and tidy. It is a much calmer atmosphere than say Powells, which can be very cluttered and overwhelming. It's a bit more for adults than kids in that way. That said, for those with young kids, beware the tables with glass jars on them because they are a kid magnet, at kid-height, but obvs the jars are breakable and easily slide around on the tables. I kept having to tell my kiddo "don't touch anything!" It was kinda stressful for me, and was making the staff person nervous as well. Also, since the tables are full of the jars, here's nowhere to put the lid. So you have your bag in one hand, the scoop in the other, and where does the lid safely go? I think just a little wood border around the edge of each table to keep the jars from being knocked off would be great, and maybe little wire lid holders would help make Sugar welcoming for all ages! read more

I bought 6 jawbreakers that had absolutely no taste at all. About an hour later I tried to return them and buy something else, but was told they don't accept returns. This is understandable for loose candy, but they could have offered to refund my money. $5.00 for 6 jawbreakers is pretty steep. Lost my business. read more
