Sugar plums fritters are so good. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I finally made it in on a Saturday. The fritters are normally gone so you have to come early. An adorable bakery with a good cause! I'm in absolute adoration of this place. The have such wonderful sweets here and they employ disabled people. That really makes my heart so happy! They are located on Laskin road where there is a ton of construction going on. That's the only drawback. Otherwise it's sweetness and delight. They serve coffee and other beverages as well. The sea of sweets displayed is enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. Lemon bars, lime bars, cookies, cakes... For about $4 per bar, I got a few sweets and a nice pumpkin chai for a total of less than $20. Little pricey but so worth it! read more

After a wonderful lunch at Wasserhund Brewery, my girlfriend and I came here to check out this bakery for some desserts to bring home to Newport News with us. But in actuality, this here is more than just a bakery. They are a non-profit organization that gives educational, employment and training opportunities to individuals with disabillities going back to the 1980s. Definitely paying it forward. We did end up picking out some desserts. For my girlfriend, she picked a glazed donut and cream cheese danish. I chose a cookie monster (a cookie sandwich with buttercream in the middle) and 2 cookies (triple chocolate and white chocolate cranberry). All desserts were good and honestly, not too sweet. The cookie monster could've had more buttercream between both cookies but it was good nonetheless. Not a bad 1st time visit. Buying goods which is for a great cause is a huge plus in my book. No stars if I could. My mom is turning 50 and The first picture is what we had showed them as the inspiration for the cake on Wednesday. When we come and pick it up Friday afternoon (the day of her birthday) this is what we get-some thing that doesn't even look like the photo and honestly looks like it was done in 10 minutes. This was $80 down the drain. Actual We are honestly so disappointed as the cupcakes and other desserts. We've tried their taste, so good, but the presentation is just embarrassing and we feel as though we can't even use the cake now. Horrified, to be quite honest and ashamed. Edited to update: Received a phone call from the manager Leah, who had immediately been combative/defensive about the situation. She was very unapologetic about the whole thing, and continuously repeated that we "didn't pay for the outside of the cake. Nor did we pay for the writing." This does not justify the fact that we were too embarrassed to even bring the cake to the event it was intended for. Extremely unprofessional overall. It appears that Leah had simply called only to be defensive. It really is a shame because the Specialty cakes looked so beautiful so it is absolutely shocking that we received a cake in this state. I purchased a 10 inch round specialty birthday cake. I told them the type of design I wanted and they were able to come through. The final product received many compliments. The cake was very moist, especially since it was served the next day after I picked it up since they're not open on Sundays. I've used them previously for other events so I definitely would recommend and would use again. read more

Oh MY!!! Delicious Heavenly baked goods. And they will work with you to provide the perfect cake. Growing up in Mississippi & living for many years in Atlanta, cake with caramel icing is my very favorite. If ever in (or passing through) Atlanta I go to my old Atlanta bakery for caramel cake. And Mississippi caramel pie is amazing. Those wonderful memories are impossible to banish. We called lots of bakeries, looking for caramel cake, for my sister's birthday cake. The Sugar Plum Bakery was the only one to give it a try. They didn't make the same hard caramel icing that I was accustomed to in the Deep South. They would craft a caramel butter cream icing with a yellow cake. Yes, that's close enough!! The bakery wanted to decorate the top with other flavored icing. But No!! Nothing can interfere with the caramel taste. I'm a caramel purist!! So they offered to do beachy decorations. When we picked it up it was absolutely perfect!! Oh, except the fact that it was so good that it didn't last nearly long enough. Next time I'll get a bigger cake, for sure!! They have way more than cakes. And the prices are reasonable. Sugar Plum is located on the south side of Laskin Road past the Hilltop Shopping corridor. It's a nice, clean stand alone facility with plenty of parking, not in a shopping center. A really wonderful thing is that they are a "not for profit" business that employs & trains individuals with disabilities. It doesn't get better than that. Try it. You'll like it. NO!! I don't think the manager liked being called out on a bait and switch tactic on their custom orders, even politely. Even tried to negotiate a more than fair resolution and got punished for that. I really wanted to like this place but I'll never go near here again. Manager demanded that I act happy about a last minute bait and switch or they wouldn't take the order. We stopped here one morning while on vacation. Though a special treat, my parents enjoy a morning pastry on occasion. I sampled the chocolate brownie which was super fudgy and I enjoyed the crunch of the walnuts on top. I also sampled the lime bar which was just ok- it could have a little more lime flavor but it was a good consistency with a buttery crust underneath. The prices fell in a range I would expect at the beach (a little higher than I would normally pay), but the items were pretty good and the employees were very friendly. Stole my heart or better yet my taste buds yasss. Oh my sugar hunny ice tea!!! It was sooooo many things my eyes was trying to see all at once lol. But I told myself that I'd be good, so with that being said I got the fritter called the sugar plum. I think it has cherry, blueberry and one more thing I believe. Also the chocolate chip walnut and coconut cookies annnnnd I got the pineapple upside down mini cake, with this dope azz doughnut with cookie crumbles on top. And surprise surprise it had a cream filling . I hate doughnuts with anything in the middle lol. but these ones oh yes I'll take that creamy white whatever flavor it was goodness. I can only hope that my second time will be even better than my first. If you have not been to this awesome place called Sugar Plum Bakery! I debated on writing this review, because I love what this bakery stands for. Which is the one of the reasons I chose to order my daughters sweet 16 cake from 4 hours away with them. However for people who dedicate and speak online with great emphasis on helping others, they had no interest in helping me. I was treated with no empathy, and spoken to in a condescending tone with a very dismissive demeanor by a lady who i believe is the manager. I added a layer of cake for my daughters birthday cake and the team failed to tell me they would not be able to enclose the cake in a box because of the height. When i arrived the cake looked ok (subpar decorations) but it was pretty. The lid on the box of the cake was taped at a slant about 6 inches exposing the cake. the team expressed they cant close it because the cake is too tall. I asked if there is anything we can do. maybe plastic wrap or layer it with another box to prevent anything from touching the cake, as my party was 3 hours out. the associated went and got another box with the intention of helping me, but then the manager came out and stopped it. She said we cant do it, if anything touches our icing it will damage the cake. I told her i understand and attempted to brain storm ideas for a resolution. Every time i spoke i was cut off, she said she cant be liable for the cake getting damaged, even tho she already is liable if anything land or falls on the cake with an open top. she continued to refuse to help. or help me come to some resolution, even tho the associate before was more than happy to help. She had no care to how important this cake was for my daughters sweet 16 which i had been planning for months, and put a major damper on my daughters day. I ended up leaving with the cake and an extra box to try and navigate how to cover the cake myself. Fast forward 15 min later taking the cake to my room until the party, a strong wind came and sure enough! Beach sand or some kind of dust blew on the top of the cake! leaving black dots all over the top of the cake. This is exactly why i requested the cake be closed in! Its hard for me to believe they deliver taller cakes with no cover or box at all (which she said they do). That has to be unsanitary in some capacity. We ended up singing happy birthday to my daughter and had to scraped the entire top of the cake off in order to eat it. I appreciate the associates for empathizing and showing compassion, they understood how i was feeling, but to the manager. you should be ashamed of how you failed to find a solution to my issue, or even communicate with me without being belittleing. Go forward, buy get bigger boxes, it's a bakery people will want larger cakes. Learn compassion, and learn how to treat every customer the same, cause i have a feeling if i wasn't who i was i would have been treated differently. (take that how you want). Lastly live by your motto " ITS ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE" A cake is a big deal for some people! especially me as i didn't get my first cake till i was in my 30's. I promised to always buy my kids cake on their special day! and my daughter was so upset when she saw dirt on top of the cake and we had to scrape off the top to consume it.
