    Sugar cane margarita
    Adrienne M.

My college friends and I reserved a table at Sugar Cane Rum Village for dinner on a Saturday night at 6pm! We were 30 minutes late (coming from Jersey City) but the restaurant still was able to accommodate us. Street parking only so make sure you leave some time for that. They also take walk ins on a first come, first served basis. We were seated towards the back where it was booth seating + a couple of stools. I loved the ambiance of this spot as it definitely gave off Caribbean vibes. At 6pm, it's not packed just yet since they open at that time. Of course we had to start off with the drinks! We all basically ordered the sugar cane margarita which you have the option of 3 flavors; strawberry, mango or prickly pear. Since they did not have prickly pear, I ordered the strawberry with Patron and WOW it was delicious AND they did not skimp on the alcohol. For starters, my friend and I ordered the ackee & codfish spring roll which was a 10/10! My other friends ordered the shrimp spring roll and sugar cane wings which they loved. After our starters, we all ordered another round of drinks. We asked for strawberry but was given mango. The mango wasn't my fave but I stuck with it. Definitely prefer strawberry. For our mains, my bf ordered the fried lobster tail which we didn't hear from him the entire time we were eating LOL he was devouring his dish. I ordered the penne alla vodka with shrimp and my friends ordered the oxtails. The portion of my dish was well worth the money but I wish the sauce had a bit more flavor. My friends liked their oxtails but wish more came in the pot. On the side, we all ordered the Jamaican bammy fries which we thought were steak cut fries with seasoning but they tasted like churros to me. We were all unfamiliar with bammy fries so my friend actually sent them back for regular fries which were crisp! Of course we ordered another round of drinks. We felt like the drinks became weaker and weaker as we kept ordering them and they line the rim of the cup with liquid sugar cane which drips down all over the cup and gets on your hands. We were constantly asking for napkins to wipe off the excess sugar. After the 3rd margarita, we stopped ordering drinks and decided to order hookah. Hookah was $40 cash (not included on the bill, need to pay separate person) and refills are $20. They have a bunch of flavors on the menu so we went with a blueberry mint. By this time it was around 9:30pm and we already spent 3 hours here, we were having so much fun! The restaurant started getting more packed and the music was a 10/10! We appreciate the waitress letting us stay longer than the 90 minute limit. Since we already finished up our food and drinks, our waitress let us know that the tables are only for people who are ordering food and drinks. Also, if another big party arrived we would have to leave the table. Since we still had the hookah, we asked where could we be placed. They set us up a smaller stand up table next to the waiting area which was tight for 5 people to fit but we made it work until it was time to leave. We wish we were able to relax here all night since we drove over an hour and it was pouring rain but understand the need of tables. The bill came out to a little over $500 which included 18% gratuity and an additional $20 for using card. All in all, I would visit again! Perhaps on a less busier day since the other reviews state Fridays and Sundays are less rowdy. I don't mind a rowdy crowd when I'm sitting but since we were standing towards the end of the night, there was a lot going on between people trying to get around us, people trying to sit in the waiting area and being bumped by people from surrounding tables. Note: They stop serving food at 10pm.

My cousin told me about this relatively new lounge called Sugar Cane and I wanted to check it out. The first time we went on Friday and they didn't let us inside because I had on a shorts set and my cousin had on denim shorts. Mind you it was 90+ degree day in the summer in New York and shorts were not permitted. We planned to come back another day in dress code but that first experience wasn't pleasant mostly because it didn't make sense. We went back the following week (in jeans this time - and it was still hot!) but this time actually got to go inside. I like the layout of the lounge - it's small but you can really feel like it's a private situation for you and your group. The ackee and salt fish egg rolls were fire! I got the shrimp tacos and enjoyed those as well. Service was ok. I didn't really like that we had to keep asking for napkins. The rum punch and tequila drinks were made very well. Would definitely go back despite giving a 3 star rating.

Loved the vibe at this place on a Saturday night. Great Caribbean music and bustling atmosphere. The food was REALLY good, although on the expensive side for the portions. We had the chicken wings and egg rolls. The drinks, while gorgeous, were rather light on the liquor lol. I would def go again for food, but I would probably drink elsewhere.

This place has great food and it's a vibe! You get a restaurant and lounge vibe all in one. The drinks are fantastic! The service is amazing as well!

Local gem. Great staff, good music and exotic drinks. They even have hookah for the hookah lovers. Thursday game nights are tons of fun!!

So, this one was a real doozy of a visit. The drinks were fair, with our order being a Goose Island…read moreIPA, Long Island iced tea, and a pomegranate martini. The service and food, on the other hand, were quite a mixed bag. We ordered a margherita pizza, pancake tacos, steak and eggs, and French toast with a side of sausage--the pizza, at least, was good. However, the "French toast" was more like an anemic panini press trying to pass as French toast. The steak and eggs comprised of a fairly well-cooked (that is, it was the right temperature) yet underseasoned steak of a relatively dubious cut, underseasoned home fries, and eggs done wrong (sunny side instead of over easy). The lattermost was the start of the problem, as I was willing to give it a shot, but found the texture off-putting. In light of this, I brought the problem to our server Adalia, who brought it to her manager Elvia. Thankfully I had someone else with me to tell me what happened: Elvia came over without addressing me on their error, silently took a look at my plate and instructed Adalia to have the kitchen put the eggs back on the fire. She takes my plate to extract the eggs, and brings them back (unsurprisingly) completely overdone, first in Elvia's hands, then in Adalia's for her to serve; we send for a refire, and they come back correct 7 minutes or so after I've already finished eating. Considering the hassle it took to get them, I couldn't trust it enough to eat, leading them to waste as well. After all was said and done, the GM Amer comes over to see how things were, and was thankfully helpful and understanding of our situation. Here's the rub: I was initially willing to overlook the steak, the home fries, and even the eggs if the error was properly ameliorated. Adalia and Amer both did very well, and I'm grateful for them for that; Elvia, on the other hand, managed to break the chain of competent customer service by directing the server to handle the problem in a way that was set up for failure (if you mess up an egg, it's an immediate refire because of how the egg cooks in the first place -- Amer also arrested to that policy) all without addressing us and taking accountability, due to negligence or whatever else. Not only that, but when sending the incorrect eggs over the second time, she couldn't even bring it to us herself--it would have been easy, seeing as she was the one that originally had them--and left Adalia and her tip to potentially take the fire if the patrons happen to be angry. Mistakes are fine--everyone makes them--but I'd describe this as cowardly more than anything else, and I take issue with that in particular from a leadership standpoint. While Amer graciously extended an invitation for a better experience next time, I can't say I'll be taking him up on the offer when their service and food are this misaligned; unfortunately, a disappointment overall.
