We also had the salmon and filet hibachi which was DRENCHED in oil and super oil, almost like oil soup with rice. Horrific. Who puts green bell peppers in pad Thai? And no egg? All I could taste were green bell peppers. And sweet and sour sauce with gyoza was wrong. The hibachi wasn't seasoned. Even the rice was inedible. All you need to use is garlic butter and soy sauce but they couldn't do that right. The hibachi "sauce" was gross. Weird sauces for every part of the meal. Ketchup doesn't belong with Katsu. Even the dressing for the hibachi salad wasn't the traditional ginger dressing! Some weird twisted white person decided to corrupt Asian food. Even my child wouldn't touch the mozzarella sticks since they had a weird corn like after taste. I was in disbelief with every container we opened. So gross. read more

Mind blowing experiences. 3 times in a row I ordered Sushi to go over the phone and the girl at the bar says 15 minutes when it actually takes 45 to an hour. The last time I came an extra 20 minutes after the 15 minutes she said it would take, waited for another 35 minutes more, asked the girl at the bar if they knew how much longer. She said she would check for me, then went the opposite way around and back to the bar taking orders, chit chatting. I did leave. First time here. Was NOT impressed with the soup or salad. That being said, the Hibachi was FANTASTIC. Our chef was extremely personable, and is quite skilled. The ginger sauce was AMAZING. Our party of 8 had a great meal at Sugami last night. We attempted to call earlier in the day to make a reservation but nobody was answering the phone. To be safe with a large party, we arrived a little after 5pm and we were seated immediately. Our server was very polite and attentive, and the food was tasty. My husband is Japanese so he is VERY picky about his Japanese food, but the food even met his critical expectations! The interior is rather boring and looks a little cluttered, but it was clean and the table was roomy. Between the 8 of us, we had miso, green tea, several sushi rolls, habachi seafood, fried rice, chicken katsu, and yakisoba. The only blemish on the evening was a mixup with our order that caused the last entry to come out 15 minutes later, after everyone else was done eating. I asked them to comp that item, but they only took off 20%. Better than nothing, but they made the error and should have made it right by comping the item without needing to be asked. read more

There are a few different places called Sugami (much like the Buddha lounge) so be sure to get the right address. This place was featured prominently on the Beach TV channel as an established hibachi grill and authentic Japanese steakhouse. After a little investigation in the form of asking around, I determined that the spot had previously been a favorite for locals and vacationing golfers - which is basically the same crowd - but had fallen from favor due to menu and staff changes to lure in a younger, hipper crowd. This fact cemented my resolve to check it out. I typically use vacationing golfers as my reverse barometer for just about everything. Other than buffet locations or a vivid description of a hooters server, generally I disregard most of the things they tell me. No offense intended. That scene is just not my thing. Not yet, anyway. I arrived for the dinner service with my lady friend and realized changes had been made even though it was my first visit. The bar was of modern design, not particularly imaginative but very inviting. Most of the dining area however was from late 1980's Benihana. They kept the prior mystique of a local hibachi and just added some modern flair. Had the place been any bigger, it would not have worked. But this place seemed cozy enough to get away with it. The service was adequate, the bartenders were friendly - mostly Russian girls, so the scenery was nice and the conversation was interesting. We ordered some maki, including the Soundboy roll (smoked salmon Philly tempura), some sashimi and a few gilled appetizers. The drink selection was fair but the house Sake was bland and ordinary. The sushi was good, but nothing to write home about. The grill items however were excellent, so if you are on the bubble about sushi, go for that menu right away. The value of this place was definitely the swag. It seemed to be the late night hip hangout much like the other sushi bars in the area. The parking was kind of a mess, but it was not very inconvenient to park nearby and walk a few blocks (it's the beach for crying out loud). My best advice, the older you are, the earlier you want to arrive. They started to bump some Riviera discotheque around 11 PM, which I was feeling - and most of the crowd approved. Hello, so this place eh. Not too great. Walked in the place was dirty food on the ground and the waitress told us she'd clean it up and never did. The table was messy and they never cleaned it. I ordered steak hibachi and the chef who did our hibachi was very welcoming and very kind he deserves a raise. But when it came down to the hibachi the steak was very chewy and just wasn't very good. They also where very accommodating to what I wanted. House salad has this delicious ginger dressing and Misso soup. Order your sushi here. Omg!!!
