I haven't been to many flower shops in SF but I feel like this is a must visit if you're a succulent fan because they have some of the most unique pieces here which I think are worth the price tag. I got myself a little rainbow cactus (since I'm a noobie) in a planter that was hand made at the shop. All the employees were really nice and helpful. The cashier packed it securely in a bag for me so it wouldn't wiggle around while I went about my day. Super thoughtful and will definitely be back to check out other things! read more

"Hell no!" is more like it and I tend not to use phrases like that. Two women were walking out as I was walking in. The clerk practically shouts them down wishing them a welcome. Meanwhile, he simply glared at me and turned his back. I let it go because I wanted to wait and see how he greeted others. Another couple walked in minutes later - African American - and he had nothing to say to them either. Yep, you guessed it, selective greetings for the white, I mean, right customer. This is San Francisco and whether you like it or not, there is diversity. Deal with it. The window display is eye-catching but the product selection isn't that spectacular and the glasswork is horrid. If they are going for an old glass feel, it's not working. It just looks bad with bubbles in all the wrong places. I'll be screenprinting this review in the event it gets deleted and take it from there. ***** UPDATE: 5/7/15, 4:49 PM The owner of the shop has contacted me to address my concerns. It has been very positive. He strives to create an environment that is welcoming to all visitors and has a proactive plan of inclusiveness in his business practices. It troubled him to hear about my experience. I may never know what the intent of the clerk was. My experience in the store that day had put a damper on the good energy I was having that morning and I shook it off so that I could continue having the great day I was having. The owner of the shop really turned things around for me as far my overall opinion by making this statement, " I understand your concerns and how real they are" He did not try to dismiss my concerns or make light of my experience. Most of all, he genuinely wants me to come away from this with a more positive experience and he has. Also, he has invited me to meet with him and his staff. I was recently exploring the Cortland Avenue area and saw the Succulence sign and was immediately excited because I had seen it on Yelp and was looking forward to going in. The store has a homey welcoming feel. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable and not pushy. They have an amazing array of art planting, terrariums, containers, etc. There is also an entire selection of tillandsia (aka air plants) for those of us with a black thumb. There is a larger selection of succulents than Flora Grubb, but I like Flora Grubbs sense of humor when it comes to display plantings. Total first world jerk comment, I know. The only negative is because I feel everything in the store is about 30% overpriced. read more

I have just recently found an obsession for succulents. One day my girlfriend comes over to my apartment with a terrarium as a gift for my mom and I thought to myself, "damn... that looks awesome! I need to get me one of those!" Then, I saw how much they sell for... then I thought to myself, "damn... that's kind of expensive! I need to make me one of those!" So after some research I got my soil, charcoal, rocks, and bowl... everything I need except my plants! So I go to the back of Four Star Video in search of some succulents at Succulence... but they're closed! Luckily for me, the girl working the counter for videos tells me she can still ring me up but if I had any questions she probably wouldn't be able to help me. At this point, I'm just glad I didn't come here for nothing! She "opened" the store for me and turned on the lights... I roamed their selection and found 5 baby succulents at $3 a piece. I was DELIGHTED to happen upon the store quite by accident, having been inspired to check out Cortland Street with the aim of going to Sandbox Bakery for dessert and after that, taking time to walk and explore the street. Succulence is the kind of reward you hope for when you decide to explore a new neighborhood. The kind of place that feels like a hidden secret, something the locals treasure but that hasn't quite hit 'the news' yet... (like Sandbox, although it just got covered in the New York Times so it's not-so-secret anymore!) And Succulence really is sorta hidden; you'll see a folding board on the sidewalk in front of the video store directing you inside and to the back patio. The store has the charming feel of the old Flora Grubb on Guerrero, both in and out-of-doors with lots of unique and fancifully presented succulents in all sizes and kinds of beautiful containers. The staff are succulent lovers (a special and devoted variety of plant lover) and they surely DO have a lifestyle store... not only succulents but great ways to display them, plus solar lights to show them off, and interesting pieces of art intended for or inspired by the garden... great tableware too! Check this place out before it hits the New York Times! That trip to Sandbox I mentioned above...?? The place I decided to got to after I read about it in the New York times?? One of my favorite shops on Cortland Street, Succulence is one of those places that just make you feel at ease the moment you walk into it. It's warm and comfortable aesthetic are created by great displays and product placement and, of course, the plant life! There is both a "shop" and an outdoor portion to this store which I both love. The shop has the coolest terrariums and terra domes as well as cool decor items. The outdoor portion has beautiful vertical and custom planters and tons of plant life to marvel at. They even give lessons/classes on how to make your own. The staff is amazingly friendly and has always been there to answer questions I may have. I love filling my patio with plants. This place is so inspiring to me and just makes me happy! read more

We just had a private terrarium class last night for about 11 people. I didn't organize it, but from what I can tell Ken was easy to work with and accommodating for our our group. Once we all arrived, we poked around the store a little bit then sat down to talk about planting and caring for terrariums. We then got a semi-guided tour of the store to learn about the different types of pots, soil, rocks, tools, and plants to get some ideas and see all the possibilities. We were all able to pick out a number of 2-inch plants to use in our glass globes and we had free reign of the rocks, sand, pebbles, moss, etc so there was a lot to work with! We all really enjoyed the time spent in the adorable space and learning about the history of his store! (Former video store turned half-video/half-plant store, then full plant store just under a year ago) Ken really loves what he does and you can tell by his positive attitude, funny stories, good advice, and engagement with the class. I will definitely come back for some more plants once I find some unique containers (e.g. coffee pot or blender! so cool). Thank you, Ken! read more

What a special spot! Our group of 15 girlfriends had a ladies night out here - and it was so fun! Coordinating the details w/ owner, Ken, was a breeze. He was friendly, accommodating, and thoughtful. We chose the No Maintenance Moss Wall class, and had the store to ourselves for the two hour+ class. Shout out to Seth, our instructor, who was knowledgeable, hilarious, and so nice. He made us all feel comfortable while getting creative w/ moss - totally moss-ome! The class also included a tour of their beautiful store, which is an inspiration in itself. Many of us walked away with ideas beyond the moss wall for our home. The moss walls we made - such a variety-were each gorgeous and special in their own ways. Can't recommend this place highly enough for a special event or gift for someone. read more

I took one of the vertical gardens classes held here at The Succulence and it was so much fun! Ken is super knowledgeable about all things succulents and was very easy going teacher. The class was relatively small (6-7 people) and is held in the shop itself. The vibe was really nice since you're around all these amazing plants, pots and awesome art. I initially wanted to take the terrarium class but the vertical gardens class was definitely an amazing experience. If you can't take one of their classes, I definitely would recommend stopping by their store just to have a look around. You'll probably pick something up just because it's pretty but you never know, you may be building your next terrarium shortly after. I read the reviews and people said it was pricey but I didn't expect it to be that pricey... I only bought one plant but it looked kinda overwatered or something cuz the lower leaves were yellow. Some of the other soft succulents also had mealy bugs. They had other varieties that i wanted but they were too big for the pot that i have. Great place as a one stop shop for a pot or terrarium; they have tons of top dressing. i'll probably come here again since it's fairly close to my neighborhood. i also quite like the neighborhood this shop is in as well. read more

I love the front window displays, who ever does that is great! That being said. When I asked for help in finding a colorful bromeliad for my patio I was met with a yell that bromeliad aren't for outdoors. Uh huh.... I am a member of the bromeliad society of SF. When I told them my experience they just giggled in that angry man's ignorance. This did happen a while ago. But made an impression that has not allowed me to return. Not even for curiosity sake. I am so sad with how my succulence experience went. I think it's such an awesome store. I bought two succulents from them as gifts. I bought a necklace with a succulent in it and I asked them how to take care of it and I was told it was just watered so I don't need to water it for another month. Less than two weeks later my poor necklace succulent is dying before I even get a chance to give it as a gift. I called and the person I spoke with was very kind and they told me I was supposed to water it WEEKLY! They then spoke with their manager said that their policy is that they can't do exchanges because they don't know who said that to me etc etc. I know who I talked to, and I don't like feeling accused that I may be lying or something. The only option I got was that could come in and buy another $15 succulent with a discount. Beware buyers! Do your own research because they aren't consist with their directions. Know what you are getting and know this SUCCky exchange/return policy! I'm a firm believer in shopping locally, but this has discouraged me greatly. If I went to a big brand store they would take responsibility for their actions. read more

I am gazing away at my adorable line of 5 succulents all tucked away in a wooden tray container on my window sill. And the best part? They're alive! Yeah. That's right I snuck into succulence dodging the rain on my escape route from the city before the niner's game was over and decided to disclose my succulent woes to the super nice staff. I made the confession that 1. I love succulents but then 2. I kill them because I have no idea what I am suppose to do with them. My 7lb chihuahua was also with me and shivering in the cold due to his undress... easily making me appear like a generally neglectful person. Alas! All judgements are suspended at succulence and only friendly, patient and vaste amounts of knowledge await! I am going back stat. Succulence is the most adorable plant store I've been in. When you walk in, you're hit with white walls and plants! plants! plants! everywhere! They have little pockets of handmade plant accessories plus lots of beautifully designed succulents-and-stones-in-a-pottery-bowl gardens that would make amazing housewarming gifts. Head on through the self-serve pots of moss, dirt, sand, gravel, and stone. Pass by the pots and to the back to find an open-air area with plenty of succulents, from large well-established pots to tiny 2-inch pots. Their plants are generally very healthy and well cared for. The exception are the 2-inch pots which, when they're starting to run out leave behind the dry and bedraggled. Definitely call ahead to see when they're getting in a new shipment. Word to the wise, if you pick up plants from the discounted "recovery" area, make sure to mention it when you're rung up. It's a bit surprising that they wouldn't recognize one of these plants (they definitely look leggy/dry) but oh well. The staff are helpful, don't be afraid to ask, although some definitely seem more knowledgable than others. I took a vertical gardening class there that was wicked fun. The prices are higher than what you'd get at a big nursery, but you get variety plus healthy plants plus, well, not much can beat walking around a cute little plant store on a lazy afternoon. :) read more

With a name like Succulence, its got to be good? Here, yes it actually does. After seeing a friend's terrariums (or maybe, terraria?), I started craving my own little patch of green, succulent heaven. And even better that the green all fits into a moveable glass jar. Reasons that I will go back: 1. Succulent has a great selection of plants from the tiny ($3) to the large (+$). 2. They've got all the supplies you need to keep your plants happy like low moisture potting soil to keep roots happy during mold-inducing periods of fog. 3. The plants they sell are NOT cuttings, which means that these succulents actually have root systems that will keep them alive for longer than it takes you to repot them. (large chain store, I'm looking at you and the crank, almost gonzo plants sold in your "nursery" sections.) 4. They have a changing selection, so every two weeks you can find new varieties to feed your plant habit, no matter how it manifests. I would also go back to sit on the back patio and enjoy a satisfyingly juicy yet relaxing moment, swap stories, and ponder the overlap between plants and in-store movie rentals. read more

A fabulous afternoon Two girlfriends and I did a terrarium making class here on a Sunday afternoon (it was my birthday gift from them). The whole class from start to finish was so awesome - from picking our plants, to designing the inside with glass and sand and moss and pretty colored rocks. They told us all about the different types of succulents; how to care for them, how to maintain them, and even how to take cuttings and grow new ones! The shop is a beautiful blooming and leafy green garden with a variety of plants that will fit a shoppers wants and needs. They are very quick with communication. I bought an adorable variegated bear paw succulent (in love with it) but noticed some red streaks on its paw and I messaged them about it. They responded in a quick manner (15 minutes) and helped me out! I also had a new concern about my plant (amateur plant owner) and called to ask.
