The Fence Drive In - The Fence's Own Fish Sandwich

The Fence Drive In

My husband and I were driving back to Baltimore from the Finger Lakes about a week ago and decided…read moreit was the perfect time to check out the Fence Drive In! The Fence Drive In looks charmingly old, and it does have a long history in Milton! It was once a tent restaurant (called "the Breezy Tent") which opened in the 1930s. The owners then built a permanent structure on the site in 1951. After several floods that almost destroyed the building, the owners sold it in 1975. Since then it's been owned by the Rabb family (now run by the second generation), and they've maintained the historical charm of the restaurant. Today, it's still a drive in with car hop service. The restaurant is right on the Susquehanna River, and they have several comfortable picnic tables facing the water with some twinkly lights over them, too. While this looked incredibly charming, we wanted the classic car hop experience for our first visit. So we drove up, parked, and waited just a minute or two for a waitress to come out to our car with a menu. Later, she brought our food out to us on the tray that clips on on to the driver-side window. It's an incredible bit of Americana that is almost gone now, but you can have that vintage experience at the Fence Drive In! Their menu has the classics you expect (burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes) with lots of seafood options as well (fish sandwich, shrimp). We shared a cheeseburger with everything (ketchup, mustard, onion, relish) and their scallop basket (lightly breaded and fried scallops) on top of French fries, with a side of coleslaw. The food was great. The burger was a classic. The scallops were really well fried - the breading was light the scallops got a crisp on the outside but weren't overcooked. The service was friendly and fast. They are a cash only establishment, but that just adds to the retro charm. It's a gem. It's not a just a quick restaurant to grab a bite at; they're preserving an American classic. So stop by the ATM inside if you need to, but definitely stop by The Fence In for a great meal and some nostalgia if you're anywhere near Milton PA.

Great nostalgic little spot!…read more Pull in or go inside their little "hut" of a dining area. Please know they're cash only but they do have an atm. Super cute and clean inside. Sit at the table and someone will come take your order. Not a huge selection but perfect for a lunch with friends or family. It was raining so we couldn't sit at the picnic table to enjoy the river but a great spot. Burgers, hot dogs, hot ham and cheese, fish with hand cut fries and a few soda choices as well as milkshakes! Def check them out. Spent $28 for three platters!

Ok so first off someone needs to figure out the sized of fries we did a test buy buying three size…read morefries and low and behold almost exactly the same for each size I would call them in my opinion small! We no longer order soda from here as it always missing that syrup that should be there I think they turn it wayyyyy down to save the boxes of soda making the soda taste more like soda water if that makes sense how sad! I always ask for and pay for an extra piece of cheese bc I get a double burger sandwich and they only ever put one slice on so I specify one on each piece of meat! And 75% of the time I get home and nope no extra cheese but yes I was charged ugh but not worth my gas to drive back and complain! Lets talk about the app there is no way to ask for no salt fries like not everyone wants tons of salt added to the fries, and if I ask for no salt it's a gamble if I get salt or not. This Burger King was great in the 90s they need . Customer service is a hit or a miss mostly get better service in the early part of the day. So let's fix the sizing of the fries or just charge one flipping price lol a small price for the small fry haha and let's turn the syrup up to the correct flow on the soda machine so I can actually have a soda if I want one. I thank your finest pardon! ;-)

The Greek Shack - Frappe and Baklava

This was a solo stop and it was beyond delicious. Two young chefs displayed the culinary skills of…read moreseasoned vets when they whipped up these Greek favorites. I was craving stuffed grape leaves (served with pita, lemon and tzatziki) and theirs did not disappoint. This was actually my first visit so I was excited to try a few different things. The shrimp souvlaki skewer was possibly my favorite kind of shrimp ever; of course it's not fried and wasn't overly smokey from the grill, but the seasoning and perfect temp made it so craveable...I could have eaten about five more skewers and I was tempted to take an order to go for the house. Their tzatziki is a little thicker than most places which helps it stick while dressing your meat. The chicken was a tad dry on the gyro but the flavor, seasoning and toppings more than make up for it. Ending any Greek meal with baklava is really ideal for me, and it's just the perfect sweet ending to an incredible experience.

Until today when I ordered a Gyro from The Greek Shack. They showed fries on the Gyro in the picture but did not mention them in the description, while providing an upgrade option for fries, so I assumed I would not get fries on my Gyro. In my very strong opinion, fires don't make a Gyro better. In my even stronger opinion overcooked fries that were cooked in very very old oil and smell rancid and are nothing more than mush don't make ANYTHING better. The fries were gross. I picked them out of my food and gave the Gyro a fighting chance. Gyro meat should be freshly sliced off the spit for the best results. The gyro meat at The Greek shack is pre-formed and frozen. They even made it worse in the reheating as it was also overcooked and tasted off. Nothing authentic going on here, they just reheat frozen meat that came from a factory. This was hands down the worst Gyro I have ever tasted. Not close. There are no competitors. The Tzatziki, which I ordered an extra side of, is also the worst Tzatziki sauce I've had. Just tastes dull, no pop from the lemon or garlic and no discernable mint or dill. I mean the sauce is pure white, so I'm pretty sure they do not use mint or dill in the recipe. I'm so incredibly disappointed. I worked a long day and thought I was taking a safe bet on one of not only my favorite food items but one that was also my father's favorites. I've been eating Gyros on the regular for more than 40 years now and I travel for work so I eat them all over. I've had them in Coronado, CA, Denver, CO, SLC, UT, San Francisco, CA, KC, MO, Phoenix, AZ, Las Vegas, NV, Boise, ID, Billings, MT. And more. I love Gyros. This one was gross. I could not eat it.
