Even though I went to school at UCSD for four years and now currently work in the School of Medicine, I don't eat here because the lines are always crazy and they move insanely slow. Plus, if I want a sandwich, I'll just make my own, I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for one, especially when I don't make use of all their fixins. But now with the 5 dollar foot long deal, it's a little more affordable. Plus, my boss offered to buy my lunch so of course, I ate here. I opted for the oven roasted chicken breast on italian bread with cheddar cheese (it's shredded, not sliced), olives, lettuce, and tomato. It was also toasted :) I thought the sandwich was delicious!! The chicken wasn't super juicy or anything, but it was far from dry. The cheese also tasted decent and the veggies were pretty fresh. My only irk is the service. I've been here prior to my most recent visit, and most of the time they act like they have a stick up their butt. They were a little mean this most recent visit, but I'll let it slide, it wasn't like some past experiences that I've had here... Even though I loved my sandwich, I probably won't be coming back anytime soon. The delicious-ness of the sandwich doesn't change the fact that the lines are always SO long and slow. Plus, I don't think it's worth it to wait in a 20 minute line where you have a 50/50 chance of getting crappy service. read more

How different can Subway be, really? The only thing that makes or breaks a Subway is their customer service. Unless there's a health hazard or something at one of the locations. The one at UCSD is okay--they aren't particularly amazing in customer service but they get the job done. Not sure if I'm just always stuck behind a picky eater or something, but it seems like I've got to wait a while when ordering my food. Sucks, but oh well. Sadly, today was the last day of September, which means no more $5 footlongs (boo). I usually go for the Turkey Breast on Wheat, with pepperjack cheese, and pretty much almost all of the veggies (except olives and jalapenos). I get this toasted which I really love. I love the pepperjack melted into the sandwich with all of thye fresh ingredients on top of it. It's delicious. But yes, Subway can only be as good as Subway. There isn't anything too crazy about their sandwiches, but they're solid. They make you full and for the most part are pretty healthy, depending on what you put in the sandwich. Sad that I can't get a $5 footlong anymore, but hey, I guess I can get the $6 Lunch deal, which gives a 6-inch, a bowl of soup, and a drink. That's not bad either! read more

This has always been a 3 star Subway to me (note: Subway really cannot score higher than 3 stars. Maybe some Subway somewhere deserves a 4, but I've never eaten there), until last week when, sick of the other Price Center eateries, and short on time, I decided to swing by here during the dreaded noon rush hour. I think I had always miraculously avoided the lunch rush in the past, because I think I'm smart enough to know to never go again during that time after this experience, so it couldn't have happened before in the past, but let's recount this joyful time. I'm in the second row of the velvet rope line, and can barely see the bread lady, when she asks what I want. Huh, who is that talking to me? I only see the backs of heads of those in front of me? Ok, I guess I'll yell, something I hate doing outside of sports. I'LL HAVE THE CHICKEN BREAST ON HONEY OAT PLEASE. Toasted? NO THANK YOU. Cheese? NO CHEESE, PLEASE. What veggies would you like? (Internal monologue) Wait that voice is different... yet another employee I cannot see... This pattern continues all along the sandwich line, culminating with them telling me to cut other people in front of me to pay because their subs were being toasted while mine was already done, which if I were those people I would be quite displeased, but since I was in a rush, and I was being yelled at by unseen assailants, I went with it. Got the sandwich back to my desk, take a bite, and it's pretty good, but seems oddly soft. Take another bite... something is missing... Open it up... THERE IS NO CHICKEN! They made and sold me a veggie sandwich. Because I never actually saw my sandwich at any point during the creation process, I had no idea that they never put the chicken in. Needless to say, this sandwich was a touch of a letdown. read more

After a long day of studying, my brain slips into delusion and has a way of convincing me that even the most horrid Price Center offerings look somewhat palatable, which is the story of how I ended up trying Subway, despite me knowing that on multiple occasions, I left quite disgruntled. Usually, the obvious thing that would deter me from Subway is the huge line, and I suppose there is a long line for a reason - Subway is much less toxic for your body than the rest of Price Center food offerings, which really isn't saying much. The service at Subway goes barely beyond taking your order and dispensing your food - they actually make some effort to customize what goes into your sandwich - hardly a plus but worth mentioning. I got the cold cut combo on 9-grain honey wheat. I usually get all the veggies except jalapeno or banana peppers because Subway is the only place where I've had really bad indigestion from eating peppers. The cold cut combo claims to have more meats than just bologna, but really, all I could taste and see was a thick layer of pink mass passing itself off as bologna. Kind of gross... Also, I have a feeling that the loaves of bread are laced with a high dosage of high fructose corn syrup because after consumption, the amount of mucus production, especially in my esophageal lining, literally doubles. I suppose the only positive aspect of Subway are the veggies - a comment not worth reiterating. Most of the veggies they'll give you is lettuce, which, to me, isn't really a vegetable, but rather, cheap mass. Overall, for barely over $5 for a foot long, it is a quick way to fill up and get back to studying, but I always feel like crap for the next few hours. Lesson learned - pack lunch for Geisel studying marathons. Price Center food will be the end of any unwary UCSD student caught without a passable, home packed meal. read more

This subway is established in the UCSD campus. I'm sure the employees have to deal with a lot during finals and what not so quality seems to decreases around that time but fast food is fast food. I feel bad that this location has such bad reviews. I go here all the time for a quick and convenient lunch or dinner and I always leave with my expectations met. If you go during lunch hours, obviously you should expect a long line. You're having lunch at the center of a huge campus with thousands of students looking for the same thing you're looking for after all - an inexpensive, quick meal. I can see they're doing the best they can to make your sandwich as fast as humanly possible. It's not like they're stopping to make conversation with another co-worker or slacking off by other means. They've always been fast and efficient from what I've seen over the last 3-4 years I've been going to UCSD. Sometimes during rush hours, they would open a second line on the other side of their stand so that the lines can be cut in half and people can get their sandwiches more quickly. I thought that was nice of them to have a second sandwich bar ready just in case. When I go during hours that aren't as busy, I'll run into an employee that would ask me how my day was as he is making my sandwich. Sometimes he'll even ask if I would like a cup of water since I usually just opt for a sandwich and skip on getting a fountain drink. Most of the time, you have to ask yourself for a cup. Damn, you guys. It's a Subway, not a gourmet sandwich store. Sandwiches are made messy sometimes, but I wouldn't expect my super stuffed sandwiches to be perfect. Lines are long? Duh. C'mon UCSD, I thought you were supposed to be smart. Having come to this subway many times during my time at UC San Diego, I have to say there aren't really that many bad things I can find about it. Being a regular customer, it was great to come when they had $5 promotions for all the sandwiches. The workers were generally friendly to me and tried to serve me as quickly as possible. It's true that occasionally they can give you an attitude if you ask for more than you're generally supposed to get like maybe a cup of chipotle sauce etc. but who wouldn't be? Add on to the fact that you're working on a college campus where there's a lot of brats, you can't really expect them to be happy all the time. :-P I'm happy with their sandwiches and have never found any stray hairs in there like some other reviews have talked about. read more

Ugh here we go again...campus food review. Don't get me wrong I love their sandwiches on certain days but this last visit was a "Meh, really..?" rating. They have a new promotion for $5 you can get any 6 inch sub with a choice of soup. They offered chicken veg soup and broccoli w/ cheese, so I ordered the second one and it was a let down. This is the Subway in UCSD's Price Center food court. Ok, so I might be a bit biased, because my friend and I have our very own "Subway boyfriend", as we like to call it. He is the manager, or owner, of this location and is super nice. Whenever we go we get free drinks and chips/ cookies. Props to the staff who really have the insanely-busy-noon rush hour-assembly line down pat. They can whip out a sandwich in 2 minutes flat, toasted even. Subway is now my go-to choice of lunch on campus. The sandwiches are very consistent, so I know exactly what ill be getting (a couple of years ago this was not the case, I used to often get sandwiches that were basically ruined). Since then, the quality of sandwiches had greatly improved, they have excellent service, and subway is always the quickest place to get good during the lunch rush. I suppose my biggest gripe is that their water cups recently changed from small cup to the smallest cup I have ever seen a restaurant give out. It almost seems like a cruel joke to me. read more

I've never tried this Subway before until my junior at UCSD...and I probably wouldn't have if my friend hadn't made me choose this over Burger King and TapEx when everything else was closed after I finished a 10PM final one quarter. Well, there were so many choices that I was overwhelmed and did not know where to start (I didn't know whether to choose a pre-set flavor or build my own). It probably would have helped if the person taking my order had walked me through the process as I'd never built my own sandwich flavor at a Subway before, but I think she was waiting for my friend to do it. So finally, I just asked my friend to order his usual preferences to give me a start. Well, after "tweaking" his order, this has become my usual preference: $5 Footlong (which is NOT only $5, by the way) using 9-Grain Honey Oat bread with steak, swiss/pepper-jack cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, bell peppers, banana peppers/jalapenos, and Chipotle Southwest sauce to top it off. YUM! I've always been able to scarf this yummy sandwich with no problem! Even though I don't frequent this place very much, I always enjoy my sandwich from here whenever I find myself craving some Subway. read more

I went to order a sandwich to take home for lunch. To my surprise, there was a bone in my oven roasted chicken breast sandwich. Their soda machine has been almost broken for a while now. The water is difficult to get if you're not aware of how to operate the machine. You have to pull to the side in order to get a good flow. read more

This place is pretty good, the service is not bad but one of the two complaints i have is that the ladies never listen to what you say, i swear they ask you what kind of bread and cheese? you say italian herbs and cheese and provolone? or in my case no cheese. and then they get the bread... and cut it and then, ask, what kind of cheese? um... well... i sort of told you already... but nobody really cares so everyone just repeats themselves again, then the same thing happens for the "toasted?" um. no thanks! ... few minutes later "toasted?" um.. no thanks..... this happens everytime i come here and i find it amusing because it happens the person in front of me and behind me as well. the other complaint is that for some (god knows why) reason they give you very little lettuce, and u have to ask... can i get some more lettuce? some people have learned already and just automatically say "extra lettuce please" but they still only give a little and they have to ask for more... what's up with that? besides from those two things this is a good subway, fast service like the ohters stated and everytihng else is good :) read more

The employees there are very unprofessional. I ordered a sandwich with extra protein, and it costed equivalent to two sandwiches on the receipt... I ask the employee to check if he mistakenly input two sandwiches, instead of one sandwich with extra meat. He said he is one hundred percent sure he did it correctly... After I get the receipt it has two footling sandwiches listed. This employee later apologized and reimbursed me, but such unprofessional service will inflict unnecessary damage. read more

You can expect the lines to be long if you come at lunch on a weekday. This is a college campus and everyone eats lunch around the same time. Duh. Some people still haven't figured out that there are TWO lines, one on each side of the restaurant. Don't make that mistake and wait in the longer line just because you aren't sure if the other shorter line is the same. The line moves quickly and you get what you came here for: a subway sandwich. But save some money and don't pay extra for the combo (chips and a drink). You can walk a few steps away to the Sunshine Store and get a better drink and chip selection for a lower price. read more

PROS: $5 Deal, some of the workers there are nice, especilly the one Asian woman who always say "HELLOOOO" when it's you're up to order. CONS: Chicken is still cold if you get it in the morning/late night/non busy hours. I came here a lot before I graduated. Mostly because of the $5 Deals. You kind of get sick of it, but the other choices is wither more expensive or just suck. This is usually the longest line around the 11am-1pm. Lines moves decently but sometimes it can be frustration. At this time, the subway sandwiches are the best they can be. Non of them are cold even after putting it in the microwave oven, like you would get in the morning, or late night. If you want something cheap, filling this place is probably your best bet. Well one the one hand this is probably one of the healthiest options at UCSD's Price Center. On the other hand the people who work here are retarded. I like the Subway just down the street in the Costa Verde shopping center much better. The thing I hate most is that they slice only part-way into the side of your bread, then they twist your bread sideways and start adding the toppings in as if they were building a taco. This sucks once you are eating your sandwich because all of the meat is on the left half of the bread and all of the lettuce is on the right half so as you are eatting you have to choose if you want a mouthful of meat or a big old mouthful of lettuce. Also they are skimpy on the toppings, except the lettuce. If you love lettuce sandwiches, then this is the place to come. Also they seem to need to ask you things three times. Them: "Hi, welcome to Subway, can I take your order?" Me: "Yes, I'll have a turkey and cheddar on honey oat bread" Them: (slicing bread retarded) "Ok, and would you like cheese on that?" I don't understand why every Subway and other Avocado offering places in San Diego must charge extra for avocadoes. for real, avocadoes are one of the cheapest fruits available in California. I'm a huge fan of this place. They are my go-to place for lunch or dinner at UCSD. Food is cheap and I am vegetarian so I don't have a huge palette anyway. All the staff there are fine. I've been there many many times, so I have met many of them. The cashier (at the time of writing) is particularly friendly and has some classy ways of saying "good day" to you (sorry, I don't remember the name). This Subway even has a discount if you get TWO of (almost) any footlong sub after 5pm on any day and all day on Sunday. You get the two for just $10. Even two of my favorite vegetarian subs cost ~$14 normally. Huge savings. If you go there as a vegetarian, you have to try out their veggie patty. read more

Quick and simple, just the way I like it. During lunch time at price center, every place is packed with lines. Subways lines are not nearly as long because of how quickly they provide the food. The sandwiches have been pretty consistent every time I've been here. I usually just get the same thing, oven roasted chicken breast on flat bread but recently I've been trying their other sandwiches since ALL their footlong sandwiches are $6 in the month of february. This is a great deal imo because I can finally try their expensive sandwiches without feeling the guilt of paying too much. I try to go in the middle of the hour of the day because that's when the lines are the shortest. I'd say it's a bit subpar to other Subway's though - ingredients don't always seem as fresh, one time they were out of bread (they offered me a wrap). Yes the lines are long but what can you expect, it's on a college campus and one day when I went and it wasn't busy I was informed that this was the busiest Subway in San Diego and that's why they have two sandwich lines so that they can get more customers sandwiches faster. The sandwiches are made quickly and sometimes the workers are asking me what kind of bread and sandwich I want and I'm still in the second row of the line. Most of the wait is from the ovens because it does take 20-30 seconds for each sandwich to get toasted so it is understandable. The workers do there best to make the sandwiches fast. I've gone on weekends when it wasn't busy and the workers are extremely friendly and can have a conversation with. If you expect them to talk to you during the middle of a lunch rush on UCSD then you're probably really stupid. read more

it's not that i have anything against subway... it's just this particular subway that i really really despise. so much so that i have sworn it off completely. and in all honesty, it tarnishes the subway name for me. why, you might ask? several reasons. 1. the staff (morning staff) are NOT friendly at all. 2. they skimp on your food, you can really tell. if you're ordering a breakfast melt, they give you 3 leaves of spinach and maybe 2 tiny strands of onions. want to ask for more? don't even think about it, they will give you attitude and tell you no. sometimes i think.. hm.. is the branch manager thinking that he/she could get away with this because it's on a university campus so no matter how horrible they treat their customers or skimp on their food, these people will always flock back because of convenience? well, i can't speak for others, but this mentality does not work for me! maybe if you were a mcdonalds. but subway was never at the top of my list of favorites, and so its very easy for me to swear it off completely. goodbye on-campus subway! you have lost a customer... for good. read more

But like almost every subway I've ever been to, they literally just ask you "what kind of ____" without even trying to make your experience a pleasant one. I have been eating at UCSD's Subway since I transferred last year. I love subway. But this particular location has a problem with making the sandwiches in a way that they don't fall apart. This problem has occurred way too many times already (I am a regular customer), that I felt the need to tell someone about it. I threw away several of my sandwiches because they just throw everything on it (pickles, onions, tomatoes...etc) And the sandwich just falls apart. It becomes very frustrating to eat. I am not the only one who complained about this issue. I know my suite mates and friends have also experienced the same thing. I mean I can just stand there and throw stuff on the sandwich too. The sandwich definitely loses its value. And the workers definitely have a huge attitude towards their customers. I mean I tried asking them to make it correctly once...and the attitude I got! WoW. Whatever happened to the service industry? Whatever happened to all those interview questions they ask and demand people during the interview of helping the customer in any way that they could? Another point that I want to make is that getting a job on campus is very difficult. I know because I have tried a lot. When I see people like that serving me, it makes me even more agitated of how they got that job. This is not a one time experience. Again! read more

Let me start by saying that I have eaten here on multiple occasions despite the fact that people have told me about their unsanitary conditions. The last time I came here, which was about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I experienced one of those moments where I was like "WHY DID I NOT LISTEN!?!?!" I ordered a tuna sandwich, which was one of my favorites at Subway, and ended up throwing it away after ONE bite. The first bite I had into this sandwich tasted like vomit. Yes ladies and gentlemen....like VOMIT. I'm not joking. I seriously wanted to puke after taking that bite. I went to go complain obviously and the workers there found it a bit amusing and one of them even said "I've never tasted vomit so I wouldn't know what it taste like." First off, I had no idea that Subway workers were allowed to be rude to their customers. Secondly, you don't need to eat puke in order to know what it taste like. I know that they have either thrown up before or been around people who have puked. So you can all see why I was a bit disturbed by this statement that she made. She reluctantly asked me if I wanted a new sandwich. On one hand, I did not want anything from Subway ever again, but on the other hand, I was freakin hungry and so I stuck with the safest choice possible: roasted chicken breast. I am never eating here ever again. It may take me a few years and a new Subway before I can get my appetite back for this place. read more
