Flame Broiler used to be a go-to spot for a quick, healthy fill of carbs and protein when there was a location closer to my house. Several years later, I walk past this store in The Shops at La Jolla Village every week when I am redeeming a free ice cream serving from a nearby business. The marquee was updated to look more modern and prominent than the previous signage. Several tables were set up outside of the suite if you wanted to dine on-site. The menu offerings have remained the same with mini-bowls, regular bowls, or plates as the serving vessels; chicken, angus beef, half & half, or organic tofu as the proteins; and white rice, brown rice, veggies, or rice & veggies as the base. One area that has changed was the prices which have dramatically increased. For example, a regular bowl used to cost well under $10. The chicken bowl is now the only variety that was less than that mark. The business also used to frequently advertise with coupons in the monthly mailers, but those have long disappeared. A regular bowl with angus beef and white rice was my selection. Dispensers of magic sauce and hot sauce were at the service counter in which you could help yourself to portions in little plastic cups. The magic sauce was basically teriyaki while the hot sauce was similar to tabasco. The bowl was topped with green onions only per my request. The beef and rice were cooked just fine. I do have to say the service was still very efficient. I don't believe I have ever waited longer than a few minutes for my order to be prepared and ready. read more

It's literally a soda fountain, sauce pumps (not for self serve during pandemic) and register on the counter with plexiglass up. No seating space inside at all. They are doing well in regard to the Covid situation, with a huge plexi glass screen between the kitchen and customers. The food actually is pretty tasty, and is customizable. I usually go with the beef/chicken mix with steamed veggies. They do brown or white rice as well. They also have numerous sauce options, ranging from sweet to 3x spicy! The food comes pretty fast, usually under 5 mins from time of order. Prices have gone up a bit, but you can still get a full bowl here for under $7. That's not half bad, especially for UTC. Your only option for seating are the tables that are outside. Inside is just where you order, get your drink/sauces, and utensils. I got the mini half and half bowl which filled me up! My only concern was that it took an extremely short amount of time for my food to come out. Of course when starving, receiving your food quickly is a good thing! But pretty much as I was paying to order, the chef walked out and looked at me for a second, then next thing you know my food was out. It made me wonder if it was pre-made or just heated or what? With my options running out, I ultimately decided to stop into The Flame Broiler for some fire-grilled goodness. The meat and vegetables were well seasoned and I liked that there was a brown rice option as well. It was a very well balanced package for what it was, but ultimately left me hungry for something more filling. With all of the dining choices in the area, it's still extremely difficult to find something that I would actually want to eat. I'm really getting tired of the big, ubiquitous corporate chains and the boring flavor profiles. Trying to find a reasonably priced meal is also pretty difficult as well. Having small local options like The Flame Broiler is a really nice change to the otherwise boring landscape of chain restaurants serving up the same processed crap.
