After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Jersey Mike's Subs, near the Tanglewood Mall, in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. Located in a modern small strip mall next to Panda Express on the premises of Tanglewood Mall, this small sub shop has always been there since I knew about it. But now all of a sudden, I was tired of hearing about it, and decided to go see for myself and experience what the hype is all about. When I arrived I parked on one of the parking spaces in front of the sub shop. Its front was all windows with a bright red OPEN sign. Its shop front sign read "Since 1956 Jersey Mike's Subs." Little did I know that Jersey Mike's Subs began in 1956 as Mike's Subs, a single store sandwich shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, founded by Mike Ingravalo. Then in 1975, a 17 year old employee named Peter Cancro purchased the business with a loan from his football coach and began to grow it. The company was rebranded as Jersey Mike's Subs in 1987 to emphasize its New Jersey origins, and under Cancro's leadership, it expanded to become the national and international chain it is today. As I got closer to its glass door, the glow of its light inside somehow told me that this was not your usual sub shop. The place was clean and organized, with a wall of black & white photographs celebrating its origin. And a team of friendly and efficient employees behind the counter preparing the subs of the customers lined up. When my term to order came up, I ordered The Original Italian, in white sub buns, regular size. As soon as I ordered, the young lady employee started to slice the fresh meats for my sub and piling them up on the freshly baked sub buns. Then she passed it on to another employee who asked me if I wanted it Mike's Way with "the Juice." Little did I know at the time what that meant, but she described it as with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, spices, and the Juice (a red wine vinigar & olive oil blend). It did not take long for me to assimilate the jargon here. Then, after placing large amounts of these items in the sub, she asked me if I wanted any other ingredient from there, and she placed generous amounts of the items I requested, such as pickles and banana peppers. When she finished, I realized that that has been the Italian Sub with the most fresh meats and toppings that I have ever had. And I understood first hand why they call it "Above the Rest." I made it a combo with chips and a Cherry Pepsi softdrink. I invite you to view my photographs and video clips accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of the food. Capriotti's Sandwich Shop is known for its slow-roasted turkey subs, especially the "Bobbie," which was voted "The Greatest Sandwich in America" by AOL.com. The Bobbie features homemade turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and mayo on a soft roll. Capriotti's also roasts whole turkeys in-house nightly, hand-pulls the meat, and makes its own meatballs and coleslaw.  After discovering the hideout of this outstanding sandwich shop, and receiving many positive feedback from my friends that have eaten there, I drove up to the place to discover first hand one of Cave Spring's greatest secret. From the design of its outdoor sign to its interior design and decor, this sandwich shop calls attention to its focus on quality and uniqueness, and in being the best of the best. For example it uses American Wagyu Beef for its Cheese Steak Sub and Restaurant News has named this the Best Sandwich in Vegas. As soon as I entered, I was impressed by all the colorful signs with photos of their amazing sandwiches and references to the awards they have received, and how one of them even made a fan "cry while eating" it. One of their employees warmly greeted me and after I asked him, explained how was the ordering system. There was a size display sign to help you get a sense of the different sizes, and then high above there were three lit up menus of items from where to choose from. I ordered an American Wagyu Cheese Steak medium Sub, with fries, and a softdrink. After paying, I was given a paper cup to go serve myself my drink while they started preparing my order. In the meantime I walked around and documented the place with photographs and video clips to make my review more lively and real to the readers. When I was called to pick up my order. It came in an aluminum tray on top of a piece of paper. The Sub on one side cut in half anf the fries on the other side. I was first impressed by their fresh and soft bread, then by the quality of their meat and ingredients, and lastly by their fries. Their texture was crispy and light to allow you to eat them all without feeling heavily full. I immediately downloaded their app to take advantage of their reward program because for sure I knew I would return. I found out that they also offer catering and brought home a brochure about it. I highly recommend this amazing Sandwich Shop, for its friendly staff, its clean and comfortable environment, its pleasant ambiance, and last but not least, for their extraordinary sandwiches.

And today I finally decided to go to Tanglewood Mall, where we have our Five Guys here in Roanoke, Virginia, and give them a try. I went in with high expectations and I came out in love with the place after they far exceeded my highest of expectations! A family-business born from the answer to a simple question a couple of parents decided to ask their sons: "Do you want to go to college or start a business?" And thriving from the "Yes" answer to the question, onwards. When I arrived at Five Guys today I wasn't aware of their history or background. All I knew through word of mouth was that they made good burgers and fries, and that they were expensive. From the time I walked in the door, I was impressed with the restaurant's cleanliness and simplicity of design with the colors white and red standing out as well as their solid wood tables and chairs. The music being played set the tone to the beginning of the dining experience. There were boxes of peanuts with little paper bowls so you can take some peanuts to your table and munch while your food was being prepared. On the wall there was a sign saying where the potatoes used to make your fries today came from. What also stood out were enlarged quotes from different sources all around the restaurant along with articles pinned to the wall about Five Guys and the reason for its success. When it was my turn to order, a friendly African-American lady, Mashenka, greeted me with a smile and warm welcome. She mentioned the Classic Combo that they had, and I ordered that but upgraded it to a Bacon Cheeseburger, with fries and a drink. And of course, I asked for lots of free toppings. Besides this I also ordered a Bacon Cheese Dog. I had seen a picture of it and was attracted by how they serve it cut in half inside a hot dog bun. While I waited I went to the very innovative drink machine and made myself a Cherry Dr Pepper. Then I went to watch how the cheerful employees cooked and prepared the burgers, dogs, and fries. Later while doing my research I found out that their burger meat is fresh and never frozen and their special burger buns are freshly made daily from their recipe in a local bakery and brought in. After picking up my order, I brought the bag to the table and opened it up. The burger and hot dog were wrapped in aluminum foil to keep them warm. The fries came in a bag of its own that was overloaded and there was a whole lot more fries spilled inside the large bag where everything came in. What a relief that besides the fries being so good, cut fresh in-house daily, I also got more than what I expected. Later I found out in my research that they do this intentionally as part of their Core Business Philosophy. The company believes that providing an overwhelming portion of fries is essential to their success and key to customer satisfaction. The feeling of getting more than what you paid for is intended to win over repeat customers. The burger was so fresh and juicy, cooked to perfection, with lots of fresh toppings on top. The bun was fresh and soft with a special taste to it that reminded me of the buns I used to eat with my hot dog after winning a Little League game. And the all beef hot dogs were also quality dogs. Wow, what an extraordinary dining experience having this All-American meal in a friendly environment. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning many times. This called to mind one time they had in their menu one of the most delicious sandwiches that I have ever had at a deli: The Cuban Sandwich 12". It had tangy Pulled Pork, Black Forest Ham, and Swiss Cheese with Yellow Mustard and Pickles served on a Toasted Baguette. It was so good that every time I ordered out, I kept on ordering this sandwich at McAlister Deli. Then all of a sudden one day when I went to their website at DoorDash I noticed it was missing from the menu there. I contacted the restaurant manager to inquire as to why it was missing. She agreed with me that this was one of their most delicious sandwiches, but told me that sometimes Corporate changes the menu and removes some items, and that in the future they can also bring it back. So I thanked her for her feedback and told her to look at her records and see all the times that I had purchased this sandwich from their Deli, since actions speak louder than words. I then contacted their corporate office to inquire as well and they gave me the same answer. So I had to resign myself to be without that sandwich anymore and stay just with the memories of how good it had tasted when I was fortunate enough to have tried it. Tonight, when I was looking for sandwich places to order a sandwich delivered. I said to myself (since I'm a person of high Hope), let me look at the McAlister Deli site and see if by any chance (although many of times I had repeated this action with no results) they had brought it back. After all, in this Holiday Season anything is possible for those who believe. And you wouldn't guess what happened next. Right there, in their menu, was my favorite sandwich, that I had wished for for so long. Needless to say, I went and ordered it right away through DoorDash without even thinking to go to their website and ordering it from there like I used to. As I waited, I thought of how some things in life are priceless, without being expensive. And how maybe a simple request from one person can make a big difference in an important decision as if to bring it back. But for whatever reason it was back, and once again, McAlister Deli's became one of my favorites restaurants because of this. I followed the progression of the DoorDasher through their app until "headed your way." Then very soon the doorbell rang and the DoorDasher delivered my sandwich, which arrived well-wrapped and in perfect condition. The only thing missing was that it wasn't toasted. As you all know, part of the secret of a successful Cuban Sandwich is this. Which involves using a sandwich press or a heavy skillet to compress and grill the sandwich until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted. It's a distinctive step that gives the sandwich its signature crust and is essential to what makes it a true Cuban sandwich. I truly hope that when the management of the restaurant reads this review, they take steps to see that this doesn't happen again. And knowing them, I'm sure it won't. Because this is the attention to detail that makes the big difference.

We have so many known Sub shops around. All selling similar types of subs. Yet when I first saw…read morethe name Chicho's Subs, I first thought they were just another of those. But after I thought: "Let me find out," and approached their sub Shop, what I found ended being above and beyond the highest of my expectations. Chicho's Subs is located in the Historic Roanoke City Market Building in Downtown Roanoke, Virginia, together with 8 other local restaurants. Most of which are set-up as Malls Food Courts, where you order, pay, and pickup your food at their window counter, and then you go to the tables and chairs dining area located in the middle of them all to have a seat and enjoy your meal. When I approached the enlarged poster of their menu, I was attracted to the amazing, creative selection of food items, many named after local attractions such as: "The Star," "Greenway Chicken," and "The Roanoker," to name a few. If this wasn't enough the menu had a section titled "Peruvian Burgers and More," with appetizing items such as "El Monstruo," "Pan con Pollo," "Royal Hamburger," and their original "Salchipapas." For those who like to eat light they also have a Salad selection, as well as a Wings selection. Their three Lunch Special are very convenient for lunchtime. They include chips & a drink. For those who like Cold Beers, especially during a hot Summer day, they also have a nice selection of beers, and even a few wines, which are displayed behind a glass wall on the counter. It didn't take long for the owner of this small but amazing local business to approach me from behind the counter and give me a warm welcome. After I found out he was Peruvian, and by the way I love Peruvian Cuisine, I began speaking to him in Spanish and enjoyed our conversation of his restaurant and all the other services they provided such as Catering, Ordering To Go over the phone for easy pick-up, and Door Dash, among others. He also explained more in detail some of their most popular items in the menu, highlighting their Freshness and Made to Order. To go big, I ordered #15 on the menu: "El Monstruo," translated to "The Monster." It was a Special Sandwich prepared in a fresh hamburger bun and contained an American Wagyu patty, tomato, lettuce, cheddar cheese, fried egg, hot dog, bacon, potato sticks, with the works (mayo, ketchup, mustard, tartar sauce, and home made hot sauce). I invite the readers of this review to view my accompanying photographs and video clips of this Sandwich, to appreciate it even better. To drink I reached in their Softdrink refrigerator and got a bottle of Lemonade. I paid with my credit card on a modern machine that a tip was optional but I gladly left one because of the amazing dining experience I've been having, even before eating my food. Afterwards, I went to find a table close by and sat down to wait for my sandwich to be ready. They called me to the counter when it was ready and the first thing I did before picking it up was to take photographs and video clips of it, since the light there was perfect for this, and for your enjoyment. The Sandwich was so amazingly delicious and big that I almost couldn't open my mouth to be able to eat it and some of the ingredients inside ended up spilling onto the paper inside the round tray where it came in. In conclusion I highly recommend this restaurant to all those reading this review no matter where you're from. You will experience for yourself that sometimes it doesn't take a fancy restaurant to enjoy an extraordinary dining experience.
