"E A T" We had driven by that sign and poked fun at it several times, prior to finally giving it a try. Hadn't heard a thing about it or read any reviews before walking in to the smallish diner. Only a few tables open on a late Saturday morning. A good sign. Small town 'homestyle' diners tend to fall into two groups. The first and sadly most common is the version where the Sysco truck drops off premade everything...from the soups to the cold salads. A grumpy cook then assembles your too thin bacon and some fried eggs, or a deep fried chicken patty, into your meal. It's often transactional, uninspired and qualifies as 'dining out' in only the most literal sense of the word. Then, occasionally, you find the rare exception. Like this place. My first clue was a woman, dining alone, that we passed by as we were seated. She was enjoying a fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes that looked like the cover page of a fabulous fifties cookbook. Honestly, I read the menu with interest, but there was almost no chance that I wasn't going to order THAT. The menu is ambitious for a small kitchen, but after hearing the specials and reviewing the breakfast (all day) and lunch options, I caved to my brunch envy and ordered the Chicken dinner. I was served 4 pieces of remarkable fried chicken with a light, crispy and well seasoned breading that was clearly made by an experienced cook with real heart. A cook who, before putting a plate on the pickup, always looked at it and said with gusto, "I'd eat that". My coleslaw was homemade. The thick cut bread of my Wife's sandwich was homemade. The haystack onion rings I also succumbed to were fabulous too. All around me were patrons clearing their plates and bowls with happy faces. The two waitresses were cheerful, attentive and enthusiastic and contended with a large percentage of locals at the tables. Nearby a young kid was enjoying a root beer float with his lunch, a prize he negotiated with much pre-ordering haggling with Mom. At the next table, a local was schooling his out of town visitors as to the superstar choices on the menu. "No wrong answers", he proudly boasted. It is my opinion that having a business like this provides a soul center for small towns. Everything I saw here was beautifully executed. Nothing 'over the top' on the menu. But if you are driving buy and see the giant suggestion to " E A T " I suggest you do. I know I will again soon.

Had they been listed, we would have ordered something else or asked for them to be left off. And as if the entire experience wasn't already disappointing enough, as we were leaving, the owner/manager actually told us to "have a mediocre night." Well... mission accomplished. After waiting nearly 20 minutes just to order, more than an hour for food, receiving food that wasn't prepared as described on the menu, and then being sent off with that kind of attitude, I can confidently say we won't be making that stop again. Sometimes it's not the food that ruins the experience--it's the complete lack of service and customer appreciation.

My girls, after being in the car for 2.5 hrs ran out of the car excited to take a break from driving, to use the restroom, and to get dinner at your McDonald's. While at the Kiosk, Jon approached me and asked if I was the owner of the red car in the parking lot. I said I was. He then yelled at my girls, saying that they dumped "a whole bunch of garbage" into "his" parking lot. I confronted my girls who adamantly denied this. I believed them for several reasons: They routinely participate in river clean ups, are VERY consciences of littering, and one wrote an essay on Greta Thunbrug! So, I asked Jon, "Did you SEE my girls pick up garbage off the floor of my car and throw it on the ground. He said "Yes". Highly unlikely! Is it more feasible that it was POURING outside, my girls were excited and trying to avoid getting wet, and they rushed out of the car to go inside and at the same time, being careless, 1 SOCK and 2 CANDY WRAPPERS fell onto the ground, or that they TURNED AROUND after getting out of the car, bent over in the POURING RAIN to stop and pick up garbage from the floor of my car to toss of the ground? I think the former is a more likely scenario and Jon lied and yelled at my daughter to save his own face in front of his fellow employees, so he didn't have to look like an ass for yelling at 4 preteen girls. My daughter was so upset that Jon yelled at her that she cried in the car for an hour before I could calm her down. Yes, maybe my daughters and their friends were careless, but should Jon have yelled at them in front of other customers and accused them of something they would not do? What a way to ruin an otherwise great vacation. Not only will I not be stopping here again, but I may stop taking my daughters to McD all together after this. (BTW- when we got home, the girls opened the care door, ran out, and guess what was on the ground- garbage.)
