When you've patronized a shop for 30 years, you come to expect certain things. You get to know the staff fairly well and it's like a comfortable pair of jeans. But turmoil has come over the past year and it's not good. Corporate Franchise Ace called Abbott's bought the shop and made it part of a east coast chain, and it's affected the experience negatively. Staff turnover has been very high, customer service is lackluster. One guy today couldn't bother to say "excuse me" while I was looking over some items and he just had to get to one of the items in front of me. Manners is seriously lacking with some of their staff. There's no clear leadership in the store - other than corporate from New York state dictating sales. Whomever is running the place needs to hire better people - more training so their more knowledgable about their products, and maybe people that are a bit more people oriented. One cashier lady is so morose I've come to hate going to her. A couple of the old crew is still around but with the turnover rate, and the lack of corporate care for service, I don't think they'll be around much longer. I've always placed Suburban Ace (now Costello Ace) as my First Choice for hardware needs, but with lackluster staff, poor product knowledge and a lack of customer service, that preference is fading fast. Home Depot is a little bit further from my workshop but the people there are, overall, better now than those at Costello Ace. Damn shame and I hope they get their act together. read more

Outstanding every time! Read on. We moved from downtown to the county 1.5 years ago, foolishly avoided at first because of how poor the Fed Hill ACE was near our old house. I stopped in one day for something generic, and was blown away how friendly and knowledgeable everyone was, the fine and well stocked selections. I was an average DIYer, but thanks to them over the past year I've become a more skilled DIYer and have saved hundreds if not more because they're honest and actually care. My favorite story: walked in clueless and intimidated by the gas powered lawn care equipment. Mike listened intently, helped select the Echo Shred n Vac, assembled it, filled with fuel, completed the warranty himself, then showed me how to operate it in the parking lot. Are you kidding me :) !! They also have a nice offering of higher quality items you won't find at the other big box stores like Venta, Weber, Carhaart apparel, etc. If you want something specific they're happy to order it for you. I have been going there on average twice a month for the past 9 months, haven't tried the online purchasing yet but doing that today for 2 Ring Security flood light cameras (same price as anywhere else!) read more

Not your big box store. This store actually has experts in all the various fields one would expect to find in a hardware store. There's Tim who can handle the mechanical devices even willing to take time to teach you to run a gasoline weed wacker. There is Andy you "grew up" in paint store and who knows all about paints. ...and by the way the same gas weed walker was cheaper than the big box...and if we decide to go with the paint sample we purchased.in a bigger way...we will get our money back on the sample. I ordered a patio umbrella for an event I was hosting in October. It was ordered from the website and was to be delivered to the store. On the day I was supposed to pick it up, I got an email cancelling my order without explanation. When I checked the website, that umbrella is still being offered. The event is on us now; no umbrella! I think a more detailed explanation was in order. I hope no one else orders this item. It may never come. read more

I am a fan of local business. I needed to get a toilet gizmo to make it flush and a lighting fixture for the deck. I was getting ready to go to the Home Depot and I heard the Ace Hardware commercial. I have been brainwashed to go to the HD to get what I needed. But hell no! I am off to Ace. I have been there a few times over the years and I love it! Personal and knowledgeable service, comparable prices and the merchandise mix is far more detailed than the HD. As a man this place is my bastion of browsing. It is in my DNA to just walk up and down the aisles.... looking for nothing in particular and when I find what I came for I will continue to roam through each aisle. It is my right as a guy to do so! Ace has a lot of merchandise I cannot find at the HD or Lowes. I can ask one of the staff and they can point me to what I need. If I have a question they can answer it. Not just point me to an aisle like the bigger guys. Prices are on par for what I need. They provide what I feel as exceptional value for my money. Need a refill on your propane tank? No problem, the staff will refill your empty bottle. No running around trying to make some auto-roboto vending machine work...and it never does. Think you can find someone at the bigger stores to put it in your car for you? Sure if you wait around for a while. Personal service, good prices and exceptional value is why I shop here. Don't get me wrong, sometimes the bigger stores make sense. Lumber, drywall, windows, patio doors....etc. But for the day to day stuff it's Ace for me! read more

**The new location is just 1/4 mile north of the old store and on the opposite side of York Road.** This is a great local hardware shop. It has pretty much everything you would need to fix something in or outside your house. They even have weed trimmers, fire pits, garden decor and more. The service is very friendly and helpful. They know their merchandise and are very knowledgeable. If you can't find what you are looking for by wandering down one of the aisles, they'll help you find it. I've been shopping at the former location for years and the new location is just as great - higher ceilings and laid out better. read more

I visit this store every week to refill propane. Normally they offer a punch card to get a free refill after so many regular fills. They would not honor my propane tank since it is an 11 (2.5 gall) pound tank rather than a standard 20 pound (5 gall) tank. Other than that disappointment, the store is very clean, very convenient and primarily staffed by friendly and helpful people. Some of the older employees can be a little gruff or cranky but one just works with it and humors them and they get the job done. Its actually cool to see a place hire seniors. The store is well stocked and their selection of Carhart merchandise is excellent. The store does NOT participate in any ACE rewards programs which is disappointing because I have an ACE rewards card from when I frequented a different store. Its kind of a mixed bag trade off. I plan to be a regular customer for a long time. read more

Wow this is the kind of place I have been looking for!!! It is so awesome to walk into a hardware store that really cares about you coming back! Think of all the things you have gone into Home Depot or Lowes looking for and all you get is un-informed answers. Well not at this local Ace Hardware in Cockeysville! It was easy to find, I did not have to hike ten miles just to find help and for the items I purchased I saved around $25! I fell in love with this place and will be a customer for life!! What a breath of fresh air! Did I mention they also fix window screens!!! Home Depot & Lowes told me no one does that any more and I would have to buy a whole new one. Great product offering. The store is laid out well and has unique offerings that a lot of other large chain stores (Lowes and Home Depot) do not have. Great customer service with the exception of the woman who typically works the front desk (Sarah). She is cold and rude. Definitely not what I found with the personalities of the rest of the staff. I would not say that I'm a frequent shopper since the location is a bit of a distance from me, but it's also a testament to how wonderful the people and supplies are at this location, especially for me to drive a distance during this high-gas crisis. I was caught by surprise today to see the store's expansion/renovation. It's always great to see a store having growth, especially after the past few pandemic years. I enjoyed discussing with Melanie the various reasons for my visit from dropping off my window for re-screening, to the need to prevent birds from poking holes in my screen in the first place, to my chipmunk issue that is destroying my backyard and trying to find a humane way to handle this. I received very helpful insight and a few laughs, which were all free of charge to me and definitely needed. While I don't remember the names of the other gentlemen who were also close by, nobody is being overlooked as everybody was friendly and full of knowledge. Thanks for a great visit and I'll be seeing everyone again soon for a few more items (and laughs). read more

Convenient to my home, and like others have mentioned, excellent customer service. Yeah, a couple of the older guys are a bit gruff, but overall a very pleasant experience. The prices are probably a little higher than Home Depot and their selection isn't as great. But, it's easy to navigate, clean and the associates offer a lot of useful insight. Fantastic alternative to the big box stores! The store is clean, well organized, and well stocked. I went there to get a hummingbird feeder, and was pleasantly surprised at the large wild bird section---over 20+ types of feeders, and competitive prices too! I wandered through the garden section and saw some brands I haven't seen at HD or Lowe's, which I previously would have had to order online. Will definitely be coming here from now on when I need home supplies. read more

Took a machete in for sharpening on the Tuesday before July 4. I went to the service desk with the machete. I asked the man behind the counter if I would be able to get it before July 4. He responded, "Why". I said because July 4 is coming up. His answer to me was "So?". After I got over the shock of such a brusque answer, he proceeded to school me on the condition of the machete. I explained that I had bought the machete from the store less than 2 months before and the blade was already dull. He told me and I quote, "You haven't taken care of it". I asked him how it should be taken care of and he went into an explanation. I left the machete to be sharpened, cleaned and oiled. I went back to the store on Saturday. The machete wasn't ready and I was told by the same man that "the guy didn't get to it". I got a call from the store on Sunday that it was ready. When I picked up the machete today, the blade was sharpened but it had not been cleaned nor oiled. I explained my frustration to the man at the service desk. I asked that the blade be cleaned. I got a blank look. The man offered to waive the fee of $7. I declined and I bought a pack of steel wool to clean the blade myself. I will not return to this store again. The rudeness of the first employee and the lack of interest in doing the job correctly by the next employee shows a lack of customer care. I started using the store to support small business. As I said, I will not return to the store again. read more
