We purchased 3 pallets of bluestone from Genes with the large pieces showing at the top of the pallets. We spent over $1000. When the pallets were delivered and my husband started the project and opened up the pallets, what was inside the pallets was rubble, small, and some medium sized pieces. Not many large pieces - maybe 15 in all. When I called to speak to the owner he said he didn't know anything about what was in the pallets. He I saw the same thing he saw. My suggestion to him - let people know before purchasing. Put a sign up. We assume, as the owner of Genes, that he knows what he is selling to the buyer. Now we need to buy more bluestone, and I won't buy from him. I'll go buy from somewhere who deals in stone. I suggested he give us two pallets for free since most of our product was worthless and said - "I won't do that". Oh and lastly - one of the bigger pieces had already been cut around a 4x4 post. read more

Coworker suggested I give local business a try over big box chain. Pulled up and tried to get either of the two staff to help. Asked the closer one did they have small to medium gardenia. He told me they were big ones at the top of the hill. I asked where could I park. As though I irritated him, he pointed and yelled get out and walk up the hill. By. The time I did he had gotten in a car and driven off. I went to look for the gardenia. Did not find them after asking two other "workers." I walked back to car to see one of the first two guys. He asked did I find what I was looking for. I told him no. He said other guy sent me to hydrangea not " little white flowers that smell good." We walked down the hill to 5th or 6th building down the hill. He pulled out two medium potted plants with no blossoms. I asked how much. He told me to take to the office for price. No offer of a cart, no offer to carry. No let me call on the radio. So I lugg the plant back up to the office. When I get there the guy inside is finishing a sale. No greeting. No how may I help. NOTHING. At this point I should have gotten in my car and driven directly to the blue or orange store. When he finished I asked how much the gardenia was. I he said "30." After looking past me at the plant to say this and turned and went back to the register. I purchased it. Shame on me. After I got home I checked my account. $37.10 Horrible service and overcharged. I recently purchased some ornamental grasses from Gene's and was very impressed by the level of advice I received and with their wide selection of plants. The two grasses I bought are just beautiful and Gene's regular price was much lower than I expected to pay for ones of their size. The man who helped me was very knowledgeable and courteous, and I just love the country "feel" of the place! A sweet black and white kitty was the first to greet me when I entered the store to look for help. Then, I noticed so many interesting things to look at and buy for the garden. I knew right then that I was going to have to come back again soon when I had time to just browse. Mostly, however, I was impressed by the quality of plant material surrounding the store. All the plants looked very healthy, and the prices were very reasonable. So, I drew a picture of my foundation landscaping for the man who helped me with the grass to discuss my ideas with him and see what he might suggest to solve a challenging aesthetic problem. In just a few minutes, he ended up showing me what I believe will be the perfect solution! In fact, I am going back today to buy those plants after discussing this approach with my husband. Bottom line, I shop for value first, but ambiance and service are just as important to me - and Gene's Evergreens seems to have it all. Update 11/14/12: One of the three evergreens I purchased did not make it after about a year, so I went back to see about replacing it. I did not have my receipt, but the owner offered to give me 50% credit toward another one like it. These guys are unreliable. I blew an entire planting season on them. I asked for a landscape design, they promised they would deliver - I sent a plan, photos, etc. Followed up with several emails; never heard back. Tried to give them ample opportunity to do the work, but I guess they don't need it. I just wish they wouldn't have strung me along and wasted my time. We're at the end of the planting season, my house still looks like crap, and I may have to wait until fall now. Very disappointed. read more

I picked up some nice potted lilies and daffodils to decorate the tables at my wedding reception a few years ago. Holy crap, have I been married SIX YEARS? Hmm, wedded bliss must be interfering with my ability to perceive the passage of time. Nice selection. I bought 40 Leyland Cypress trees from Gene's and paid $4,000 to have then dug and properly spaced up my side and across the back for privacy. The harsh winter winds caused 30 of them to be restocked. Gene's said they would do it. I called every Monday morning to ask when. I got 10 different apologies from today, tomorrow morning, and tomorrow night. They never showed up! Only wanted the sale and forget about customer service. NEVER will I deal with them again. After a disappointing experience at another nursery today, we looked into other options, and dialed around the greater Baltimore area looking for a specific type of tree. We found Gene's Evergreens in Fallston and called. The Nurseryman who answered the phone knew exactly what we were looking for and confirmed that they had the multiple of what we were looking for. So back into the car and twenty minutes later we arrived at the business. It's a no-nonsense old fashioned nursery that sells plants, not trinkets or outdoor cooking equipment. An employee walked us out and there they were, what we wanted and in various pot sizes. We bought on the spot and they are scheduled to install them in a week. For an $100/per tree they guarantee the tree for a year. They treated us like valued customers and we appreciate that. Good enough for me. No nonsense, no hassle. Very happy. Recommended. read more
