My visit was exactly what I would've expected out of any sub city location. This is the first time I've been to this location on College Hill. Parking on College Hill can be difficult so it's good to know that there is a metered parking lot behind the building. Plus there's a back entrance which makes it way more convenient. Inside it's not about the Decore it's about the food. I was able to quickly and efficiently order my food and was in and out of there in no time. I wouldn't say the employees were super friendly by any means but they knew their job and got me what I needed quickly. The fact that they sliced or meet right in front of you makes all the difference in the world. Sub city subs have a unique flavor that I have never found to be duplicated. I always order my sandwiches with the works which means it comes with lettuce tomato onions and oil and vinegar and salt and pepper and oregano. Fantastic combination that really sets the sandwich off. read more

Not a bad little deli and a good place to go to fix a capocollo craving! Plus, they slice the meat and cheese per order. Delicious! I always get the #3. It's my favorite. Don't get me wrong- I love Sub City. I love supporting local businesses and I love the amazing food I get here. But the best part about local businesses is their service- and the Main St. location of Sub City is lacking good service. Two people working during the lunch rush hour, two of the pop sprays weren't dispensing pop, just carbonated water. The workers weren't very personable, and they only talked to themselves unless asking about our order. also, parking is a hassle as always downtown. read more

They don't clean the meat/cheese slicer off between uses...or at all. Not once did they grab a spray bottle and a towel and use it. And it was dead inside. I worked at a deli and you always had to wipe the cutter down between uses to prevent buildup so it was easier to clean at night when you took it apart for sanitation. Their cutter had a bad buildup....GROSS. Not sanitary at all. Hopefully, they don't make anyone sick (Listeria anyone?). Oh and they tried to overcharge us... No way. read more

Sub was spot on and fresh balanced bread, crisp veggies and meat cut there on the spot! The floor was clean and welcoming environment with helpful staff! (I hate the texture of styrofoam when I declined a drink because of this, Chris? went to the back to get me a plastic cup for my water! Very sweet) what more can you ask for? read more

Another thing I miss about home is Sub City! Every time I come back it's a toss up between Pablo's and here for food. Sub city never disappoints. They pack on the ingredients, I could barely keep my sub together it was piled so high! Always delicious and always friendly people hooking it up. My favorite sub place in town. Its fresh meat and cheese is unparalleled in this area, as they freshly cut it right in front of you every time. I absolutely love this place...Unfortunately tried going shortly after 11am Sunday and it was locked...figuring they forgot to unlock the door I knocked...they said they were too busy with a large order but let us in. ..then 5 others walked in behind us and they scoffed and said "this is exactly what I didn't want to happen".... they threw our stuff together and we left...I understand the stress of the big order...but it was pretty ridiculous and uncomfortable. read more

I love Sub City on the Hill. They have the best sub sandwiches in Eastern Iowa. Everything is fresh and seasoned just right. Subway may have more vegetable options, but Sub City has fresh veggies, meats, and cheeses that are awesome. I have dealt with them a number of times for catering, and they have discount options for UNI student groups, and they are really helpful and professional. read more

I am a regular customer, although for the last four weeks I have attempted to get a #10, which needs to be toasted because of the bacon. Although each time I have gone in they continue to tell me the toaster will be fixed later in the day. This was four weeks ago. I don't mind that they have been having problems with the company to fix it, but the fact they continue to say it will be fixed later on in the day is a little annoying. Great service. The place is really cool! When you decide the sub that you want they cut the meat and cheese right in front of you. They keep the slabs of meat and cheese in a fridge right by the counter and use a big slicer to cut it right in front of you! The price isn't too bad compared to all the other sub shops! The worker who helped me when I came in (wishing I would have remembered his name) was awesome and inviting when I first walked in. I actually didn't know that I started at the end closest to the door so he kindly explained where to begin with the sandwich making. This was the first time I've ever been here not drunk (which I think has only been like twice) either way, I love that this place slices up the meat in cheese right in front of you, only down side is there isn't a choice of SPINACH!! I would prefer spinach over shredded lettuce but all in all the sub was stupendous and filled me up. P.S. love that they still use styrofoam cups, for some reason it keeps the drink cooler longer.
