Awesome hiking trail that will leave you feeling like you got a good workout and not totally deflated and useless for the rest of the day. Our guidebook said it was a 4.3 mile round trip hike that should have taken around 2.5 hours with an elevation gain of 650 feet. In total, our hiking app had us at about 6 miles and 2 hours when all was said and done, including the walk to and from the car to the trailhead. Parking was no joke, so get here as early as possible. Also, get your adventure pass ahead of time so you're not wasting time getting one at the little store with everyone else. The hike itself is picturesque and loaded with water features, if you're into that sort of stuff. Had no idea there were so many cabins peppered throughout the trail. Kind of cool. The trail is very well shaded with trees, so you won't be in direct sunlight the whole time, thank goodness. Make sure you've conserved enough energy for the last 0.6 miles of the winding, paved fire road because it's a doozy. Once you've conquered that last part, you'll feel like a champ and will want to treat yourself to a well deserved pint of ale. read more

A pretty easy hike with a small waterfall at the end of the trial. The only semi-difficult part was climbing back up in the last 10 minutes on the paved road because there was a bit of an incline. Other than that, I saw many children and older folks hiking this trial. SUPER pet friendly. I saw at least 20+ dogs during the whole hike. But honestly folks, pick up your dog's business after. When you're using google map, put in "Chantry Flat" and it should get you there. There's a parking lot but it's not very big. It will get filled up pretty quickly. $5 for all day parking. But don't get discouraged! There are free street parkings along the road. You might have to walk a bit though. They also have a small restaurant for food, ice cream, drinks, etc. There are bathrooms at the entrance and another one near the bridge. We got there at 8:30 am on a Sunday and parking lot was already full! The drive up to the trail was pretty scary for me, the road is narrow and curves here and there and more scary when we went because it was super foggy! Anyways, we parked on the side of the road, we got the one day parking pass from Sport Chalet the night before for $5. On our way to the hike, I was thinking to myself , "Wow, this hike is such a breeze, what were the fellow Yelpers talking about?!" We got to the waterfall within maybe an hour? We felt that we didn't get enough work out so we hiked up to the "lower trail" which you get the top view of the waterfall. As we were leaving the trail, mayn the hike back is THE WORSE! I thought to myself "Now this is what my fellow Yelpers were talking about!" My oh my, that was a struggle! I didn't think about it, but going to the waterfall, you are going downhill, but going back is pretty steep (at least for me!) Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome workout, but I prefer a difficult hike towards the Waterfall and a breeze going back. **Something to know, DO NOT USE the restrooms!! I had no choice, I had to go. The bathroom looked like it hasn't been cleaned for years! -- Don't bother going in there, if you can hold it, HOLD IT! Other than that, I would go back here again probably to hike to Hermit Falls. BEAUTIFUL HIKE!! :) It is 1.8 miles one way from near the parking lot, but don't be scared! It's mostly downhill on the way down so it passes by quickly. The way back at the end can be hard because it's a little steep, but it's definitely possible! Beware: There's areas where you have to step on riverbed stones to cross a stream...but nothing too difficult. And the falls at the end are worth it! :) read more

If you expect to see a raging waterfall you will be disappointed. With the hot weather and lack of rain the waterfall is just a little trickle. The actual hike to the waterfall was very nice and easy. Plenty of tree coverage so there is plenty of shade and doesn't get too hot. There are some bugs, not as much as some people were saying but some bug spray won't be a bad idea. A few steps to make your trip a little easier. Step 1: buy an adventure parking pass at big 5 before you go there. It saves time Step 2: get there very early if you plan on going on the weekend. We had to park down the road and hike to the hike. Step 3: save your energy, the last part of the hike is up a windy road and is sunny the majority of the time. Definitely the toughest part of the hike. If you are bringing kids, make sure you have a carrier. We brought our 3 month old and two year old. Even though they had a blast we got a workout carrying them up the windy road at then end, while they were fast asleep. Overall it was a great hike, good vibes, good weather, and not too challenging. My friends and I went on this hike last Sunday. We met up about 6:30AM since parking is a big issue due to this location being very popular. The earlier you get there the higher chance you will have to get parking in the lots up there or you would resort to parking somewhere down the mountain. Make sure you also have a parking pass that you coukd get there or at a Big 5 Sporting Goods store. So there are many different trails, but the one that leads you to this particular waterfall has you following the paved road to the bottom till it meets with dirt passed a cabin surrounded by a wooden fence. Just keep following the path past a bridge and through very serene looking scenery filled with cabins near and far and lots of trees. There are a couple of trailheads/signs here and there and the path is straight forward so there is no need to worry anout getting lost. After traveling for about 2 miles, you will find the waterfall, but there isn't much water due to the drought season. Beautiful nonetheless and we were able to have a small picnic there before heading back up. Definitely need to be there again when the waterfall is fully running! read more

This is one of my favorite hikes so far! I love that there are tons of butterflies by the waterfall. I even got to touch my first one! The waterfall is definitely pretty decent looking! Pluses: 1) lots of butterflies 2) huge waterfall 3) shady for most of the hike 4) lots of areas where you can stop and swim in 5) lots of areas where you can stop to just rest and look at the river bed. Minuses: 1) Parking is hard to find 2) On the way back is tiring because it's all uphill 3) Snakes 4) Lots of people by the waterfall 5) The drive up the mountain take santa anita all the way up. and you'll reach the parking grounds for sturtevant. the drive to sturtevant falls is tricky. the road is pretty narrow so be careful of the ongoing traffic. you/they may not see each other. wherever you decide to park $5 for the adventure pass. ppl said you can go purchase it ahead of time at like sports chalet but we got lucky and this other couple gave us theirs for free. we wanted to purchase it off of them. but i guess they did a good deed for the day. anyways, pay for parking or you'll get cited. and that would be a mood spoiler. plus we're in recession don't be a fool and be cheap. you'll end up paying more for a cheap activity. i spotted a snake by the toilet area. so be careful. at the beginning of the trail it seemed pretty easy. the road starts off as tarmac then later on it'll turn into a dirt road. walking towards the falls was easy. coming back was the tiring and difficult part. the following day my calves were sore. save yourself tons of water for the walk back! during the path to the falls you have options to go to hermit falls as well. what's interesting is there were lots of houses on the path. i think people may rent them to camp out in but some of them looked really old and run down. so i'm imagining tons of termites in them. i would not do it, but i guess if you're very outdoorsy you would. great hike! i say go hiking for a day! then go stop by santa anita mall like i do to grub! the reward is great! read more

This is a perfect trail for beginners, and I highly recommend this hike for those that want something quick. Great thing about this trail is that it caters to both those that want a workout as well. First thing-parking. Parking on the weekends is pretty hectic at times, and you may have to park somewhere down the the actual parking lot which show up on the edge of the road. There are several nice picture spots you can stop off coming up to the parking lot, so i suggest to take pics before you actually go up because when you're going down, it's hard to U-turn (Most of the picturesque spots are on the side coming). I also want to mention that I suggest buying an Adventure pass. There is an REI on Santa Anita only a few miles away, so its a better option than buying it at the packing house. Once you get parking, the rest is just a nice casual hike. The hike itself features many cabins, houses, several small waterfalls from a dam, and than the last fall, which is worth the hike. The hike can be done in a couple hours overall to do if you're taking your time. The "most difficult" parts are just the hill you go down at the beginning, and some parts where you cross a stream. Most of the time you can just walk over the stream if you take your shoes off, so thats just a small tip. Other than that, bring water and food to enjoy once you get to the fall. I do suggest you bring some bag as to avoid littering because there's already a decent amount of trash around the area TeamNoTrashLeftBehind. Sturtevant Falls is so beautiful & the most iconic waterfall to me in LA county. When I think of a forestry paradise, it would be here where Sturtevant Falls is located. Just a short drive out of Pasadena into Santa Anita Canyon. I've been coming here for years and it never ever gets old & it's pretty comforting knowing that it's been so long apart since my visits and things haven't changed much. Pack out your trash you nasty ass people!! And stop pissing & shitting on the bathroom floors. Y'all people are disgusting!! Please educate yourself on the Leave no trace rule if you are going to come here! Trash is a problem!! Carry out your fuckin trash!! I picked up 5 plastic water bottles, like have you ever heard of recycling? Don't forget your adventure pass!! Easy Directions: From the 10 Fwy or even the 60 Fwy, Take Santa Anita going towards Arcadia all the way up the mountain. You can't miss it. You will end up in the parking lot for the trail. I really like this hike. My Daughter and I have been coming here for the past few months. I was just recently there this weekend and it was a beautiful hike as always. This hike is mostly shaded because of the beautiful big trees all around. For the most part, it's pretty clean there. This past weekend, I didn't see not one piece of trash. On my first hike there, I did see a tampon applicator YUCK! But other than that, it has always been clean. My Daughter is 7 years old and she doesn't have any problems on this hike. So I would say it is kid friendly. I've seen people with toddlers and even babies strapped to the Parents. We've finished the hike in about an hour and 45 minutes with us taking little breaks for water and stopping at the waterfall for pictures and a snack. I pack a backpack with water and snacks and when we get to the waterfall, my Daughter likes to hang out on the rocks and eat her snack and if it's warm enough, I pack her water shoes and towel and she splashes around in the water. The waterfall makes a great picture when people are not swimming in it. This hike is dog friendly and some dogs even swim around in the water fall area. Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty or wet. I believe there is 2 little streams you have to cross by stepping on rocks and one time, my Daughter's foot fell in and she was so uncomfortable. This past weekend, it was dried up so we didn't have any issues. The waterfall is still flowing but not as much water as it use to have. I recommend getting the annual parking pass. I believe that cost me $30.00 and for a 2nd vehicle, it's only $5.00. I purchased it there at their store. It's a good deal. Parking can be a nightmare if you come too late. I've seen cars parked down the hill which isn't a fun walk to hike up on a narrow road before you get to the actual trail. I like to arrive before 7 am on the weekends. Any time after you will have a hard time finding parking. If it's your first time, try getting a daily parking pass at REI or I heard 711 might have them near the trail. You will probably have to go get a parking pass a day before if you're planning to hike early on the weekends. read more

A very unusual hike where you hike down into it and then hike out. Pick the times you go carefully, on a socked in Sunday morning at 9am it was packed. You can park close if you pay 20 bucks, otherwise you have to park on either side of the road, off the road. The hike up to the trail head can be as much as a mile. Today it was about .75 miles. In order to make it all the way to the end, suggest you wear shoes that can get wet because you have to cross the creek a few times by walking on wet logs and rocks and it can be a little bit of a challenge. Views are breathtaking and the running water is so peaceful, although with so many people there, some of that peace is lost. read more

A very nice hike that is close to people who live in the Arcadia, Temple City, San Gabriel, Alhambra, and Monterey Park areas. We found this hike through Yelp! (Thanks Yelp.) We bought our Adventure Pass at REI in Arcadia, then drove up Santa Anita, then up the winding mountain road for 15 to 20 minutes and found the parking lot for Sturtevant Falls. We parked and headed for the trail head. The ranger asked if we had an Adventure Pass on our car and we said yes. There's several other trails you can access from this trail entrance and there's plenty of signs to guide you. We left the parking lot around 1:00pm and made the round trip hike in about 2 hours (including 15 minutes at the water fall). I enjoyed this hike and one of the best things about the hike is that much of it is in the shade. One fun thing was a large alligator lizard ran right in front of me, then stopped on the side of the hill. I took a picture of him. You'll also see all these cabins. Apparently, they are privately owned and I asked one guy who said he bought his in the 70s. I did see several places where people didn't pick up after their dog, so shame on those people. If you're gonna take your dog, then pick up after your dog. Mahalo! read more

This is probably one of my favorite hikes. It's only a 3 mile hike to the waterfall. The water is probably about 3-4 ft deep depending on the season. I recommend using water slips if you want to go in the water since there are a lot of pebbles that might hurt your feet. However, if you're feeling more adventurous and have more time on your hands, you can hike to the summit which is about a 7 mile hike up. Just be cautious because there's a spot where you literally have to jump from one cliff to another or climb a wall to get to the other end. Oh and there are couple black bear families that inhabit the area, so be safe! On last thing, the incline coming back up to the parking lot will kick your ass especially when it's scorching hot outside. Other than that, it's a breathtaking hike! read more

This is one of the more well known and popular hikes in the area for awhile now thanks to its picturesque waterfall and relatively short trail that's suitable for most. In my opinion it's great for beginners to start off with before tackling longer hikes with varied terrain like the Bridge to Nowhere hike. Be sure to buy the permit for $5 and definitely make the trip early in the morning because it gets packed real quick, especially on weekends. The only negative thing I can really think of is the lack of parking spaces here, causing people to find random spots alongside the mountain. The hike itself is pretty relaxing, apart from the uphill concrete path leading to the parking lot. You'll encounter some small streams that are easily crossed (depending on the water level at the time of year) and some cute cabins. It's also pet friendly too! Finally, as mentioned before, there's a waterfall at the end as your reward. When people suggest getting here early, they're not kidding. The plan was to meet at the trailhead at 9am. I was running about fifteen minutes late, but I don't think it mattered all that much, because people were already coming back down the mountain as I drove up. I just had to see the top lot for myself, but this was dumb and I won't do it again. Parking on the side of the street is ghetto. There are "no stopping any time" signs posted up and down the road. I actually parked right in front of one, because hundreds of cars were illegally parked anyhow. I was nervous regardless, especially because law enforcement was out in full strength ticketing cars, but I found out that if you are parked within the outer line demarcation and if you have your pass showing (though some cars didn't and still weren't ticketed), you are pretty much okay. My friend prepped us all for a six mile hike (not including the walk to and from the cars), but it was only three. The path is easy, except for the stream crossings. I had my two large dogs with me, so even though I crossed the first one successfully, I fell in the second time and just walked through the subsequent ones. The water is really cold and my feet began to hurt until I started walking again. It was a fun hike overall. Make sure you save some energy for the walk back, as the hike up is more strenuous than you'll remember. Haha. I was good, but some people in the group were struggling a bit. Also, the toilets are reminiscent of the movie Saw or a murder scene. They're terrifying. Stay away if possible. read more

This was a really easy hike with some nice trails. We came pretty early and still had to park on the side of the mountain. It can get pretty crowded. There were a lot of people closer to the falls but we also managed to find some trails away from the falls that were quiet and peaceful. The hike had some shady spots but a lot of it is in the sun. It was a nice day for us but any hotter I would definitely have needed more water. Definitely bring water and some snacks. At the end of the hike I needed something to eat. I was told that we needed a parking pass and bought one down the mountain but I saw a lot of cars without them so I'm not sure if they are really checked. read more

As you hike down, you will see quite a few posted signs to different trails, just stay on the main trail to Sturtevant Falls. But you definitely can explore as there are quite a few options, like to Hermits Falls, Upper Sturtevant Falls, Winter Creek and to Mount Wilson to name a few. This is a popular area on the weekends, so plan to arrive early like 7am or you will have to park on the side road, which will add extra mileage to get back to the car. Scenery is always beautiful, people are friendly, staff is friendly. Whether hiking alone, or in a large group you'll always take something away from the experience. I strongly suggest to getting in the waters while on your hike. I must warn you that the temperatures are blistering cold. I mean cold AF. Once you get pass that, it'll make your home even more exhilarating. Awesome local hiking spot! This location is located up the mountain. You just get off at the Santa Anita Ave. exit and then go straight up! The drive is about 3-5 miles from the bottom, give or take. This hiking spot has different trails and includes Sturtevant Falls (of course), Chantry Flats, and Hermit Falls. I went on Christmas late in the AM. Unfortunately, I had to park on the side of the mountain since all the parking spots were taken. I've been told by another local that rangers don't check if you have a parking permit. But just as a precaution, you can buy a daily pass that you scratch off for $4.99 at the REI down the street. They also sell annual passes just for a smidge more. The hike was about 2 hours round trip if you take your time. It's a pretty easy hike and starts off downhill then slightly uphill. There's a portion where you need to step on rocks with running water, so just be careful. Other than that, I'd recommend bringing a picnic as you can have one at the top by the Falls. For the most part, the trail is shaded, but there are some sections that are exposed to the sun. 10/5 would recommend. read more

One of my favorite hikes! This place is always so beautiful every time I come here. Came here recently because a big storm rolled through SoCal & I decided to go hiking to see the waterfall. I haven't been on this hike in a long time. Roundtrip is about 3 miles long & took my group exactly 2 hrs to complete with some pit stops along the way. Since it just rained recently, the stream & waterfall was GUSHING with water! You walk along a beautiful stream the majority of the time & have to cross the stream at least 3 times. So be prepared to get wet! The water was very very very cold. It hurt to walk in it! Also be careful if you try crossing any logs because I tried walking across one & slipped & fell into the water. And this was only 1/4 of our way into our hike! We hiked here on Christmas Eve Day with the family and it was a beautiful gift to spend the morning in the Sierra Madre with my favorite people. The drive up the hill is quite winding and I'm glad I was a passenger; it reminded me of the drive up the hill to Hearst Castle. As mentioned in other reviews, parking can be crowded in the lots, but we were lucky enough to snag the last two spots (at the time). It had rained quite a bit the day before but the ground was relatively dry by the time we started. You start going downhill on paved trail and then it turns into dirt and rock. There were several streams along the way that we had to cross and I'm assuming that these areas were higher than normal from the rain. We had a 4-year-old with us and we helped him across these areas by carrying him. Be prepared to have wet shoes when crossing these little creeks. The trail is full of beautiful foliage and trees and just a peaceful setting away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The falls, our ultimate destination, were flowing freely and worth the trip. Heading back to our cars meant going back up the hill where they were located, so I'm glad we did this hike in the winter time; I can imagine how much we'd be sweating if we did this in the summer time. We all enjoyed the time we spent here together and I'd definitely recommend it as a destination for almost any age. read more

I love coming here!! There's many different paths to get to the waterfall, but the main one I would say is pretty leisurely. Lots of shade when you get to the bottom and scenic views of the stream. This is one of my favorite hikes in Arcadia. What makes this hike so unique is the fact that you go down the mountain first before reaching the waterfall, but the coming up is not that fun. Also, I had to submit a correction on the map, since the original address 214 N Santa Anita is incorrect and will not take you to the trailhead. Instead, try Chantry Flat Rd Arcadia, CA 91006 to get to their trail head. Make sure to take a bottle of water as it can get pretty hot before you reach the forest. There is a small pond below the waterfall and you'll need flip flops to get in (the small rocks will hurt your feet if you don't) Parking pass can be purchased for daily or annual visits from a nearby building by the parking lot or online. Overall, an excellent choice for a weekend hike. read more

I like. I'll tell u what I do remember.... I remember huffing and puffing and saying I didn't want to do this hike ever again as I was finishing or trying to finish Tht uphill battle. Man!!! Tht was a butt kicker. And Unfortunately Tht hill hasn't changed. It still kicks my butt. Smh...lol Well.... I found myself here again because we wanted a change from Eaton Canyon. And even tho I wasn't looking forward to the finish. I LUV IT!!! Its so PEACEFUL and BEAUTIFUL!!! It's a beautiful straight trail with lots of shade. Once of course u finish ur downhill start. Theres A lot of water throughout the hike. Lots of places to chill and intake the scenery to be at peace with urself. Helpful Signs along the trail to make sure ur going to ur desired destination. 2 bathrooms along the way on this trail. Unless u make ur own. Hehe. Parking pass is needed. Best time to come is after a storm/ in the spring/ and of course when it's not so hot. I recommend this Adventure to ppl who haven't been here. I will definitely come again to explore other trails and to admire Gods artistry, along with his creations. read more

These Yelp reviews saved me! Keep going up the street until you see cars....there is a lot that is full. I parked on that windy uphill street. You can ask the employees if you don't know the trail begins below the lot. The hike is steep with creeks. I like the little cabins on the trail! read more
