I had arthritis in my hip joints, thanks to genetics, and needed my hip replaced. Surgery with Dr. Porter went as planned, so I thought... Shortly after surgery, I noticed something was off. I had had my other hip replaced 7 years ago, so I was familiar with the recovery process. Unfortunately, my hip was painfully popping out of the socket and back in. I kept going to Dr. Porter telling him something wasn't right. Dr. Porter said I needed to continue with physical therapy, which I did. It is still no better after 5 months of therapy, and my range of motion is very limited. Dr. Porter told me a revision would also limit my range of motion and be more invasive than the first surgery. He basically tried to talk me out of fixing my hip. I can't live like this. I can't even walk properly. Needless to say. I never went back. Do not let the pain rush you into surgery. I should have waited for a more experienced surgeon.

I prepared for a hernia surgery this morning, Thursday, Oct 8th. I did everything I needed to; as my ride was about to deliver me there for the 830A admittance, I get a call from my surgeon and the anesthesiologist explaining that the surgery is being cancelled. I arrive with my brother to learn the situation. Before setting this surgery up, I needed an echocardiogram; this appointment was scheduled for Thursday, Oct 1st. I went to the lobby and reported to the area to have my echo. The receptionist there told me I was not on the schedule. She proceeded to call another department where I heard her say, "His name is not in my scheduling program." Another woman came out to greet me and said that my echo was being done in another building (20 Oneil Blvd) and to follow her. She politely explained that there are two scheduling systems and that was the cause of confusion. My echocardiogram was so last minute that I was added to a different system. However, no one told me this. The following Monday, Oct 5th, I awaited the results of my echo. Unfortunately, my heart doc was absent due to a family emergency. Without the results of the echo, I needed to change plans and not lose the PTO from work. However, I received a web portal message from my heart doctor saying my heart looked good enough for the hernia procedure. I contacted the day surgery receptionist to communicate this, and I felt relief that this was going to happen. Between Monday, Oct 5th and today on Thursday, Oct 8th, I received two phone calls from staff giving me instructions on bathing with the antiseptic soap, to avoid eating or drinking past 12AM this morning, and to have a trusted driver to bring me home. At no time was I aware that the day surgery staff couldn't contact the heart cardiology department, or rather, they would not return the requests for disclosure of my echocardiogram results. They were also not aware of the message sent to me via web portal; only later did I see that it was a private message. Sadly, this was not a one-time occurrence. Back in May 2026, I tried to have my hernia surgery. One week before the date, I got a call from the day surgery receptionist that the anesthesiologist wouldn't sign off on my procedure due to old records of my heart's health. [SIDE NOTE: I had heart failure after my father's passing in April 2023. I was treated at Sturdy Hospital, RI Hospital, and Morton Hospital for this condition.] I was instructed by the receptionist to contact Morton Hospital Cardiology to transfer my health records to them. I called Morton Hospital, faxed them my signed signature approving the release, and nothing came of it. Either no records were sent or no records were received properly. Later that day, the receptionist told me that the procedure was canceled outright and I would have to consult with the cardiology department further. Throughout this whole ordeal of getting my hernia surgery, I have done what I needed to, from taking meds and showing up for appointments. In addition, I have made many calls acting as the message go-between trying to get various departments to talk to each other; why am I doing THIS as the patient? I did register my complaint on exiting this morning. I spoke to two women in the Sturdy Hospital Chapel. While they did apologize profusely, they asked if there's anything they can do to make it right. My response, "Get your ship in order." The breakdown of communication here is appalling.

I had a mild case of Covid in February but had long hauler symptoms of not being able to get enough air into my lungs. Felt like I was suffocating. I had chest palpitations, shortness or breath and extreme muscle weakness. I started my PT with Emily. My RHR was 158 with O2 between 94-96%. After a few short weeks of multiple days a weeks I was able to breathe normally without issues. My O2 got back up to 99% and my RHR was below 70. My muscle weakness improved tremendously now that I can get oxygen to my muscles. I am able to enjoy bike riding and 2-3 mile hikes without effort. University Orthopedics places making as much money off you as possible far above patient interests…read more My experience here was terrible and I want to warn anyone else against trusting the team here. I received bills for things that team members explicitly told me were not going to cost me money. If anyone comes into your room to give you something, tell them to shove it. If they schedule you to with the OT team here, push it back a couple weeks ago so you don't end up going only to find out you aren't recovered enough to start. This group even has their sales people dress in scrubs so you'll assume they are care providers. University Orthopedics is not a place you to go to get your injuries healed, it's a place you go to to lose trust in doctors. I would recommend going anywhere else so you don't end up feeling as stupid as I do for trusting them.

She explained everything well so I understood why I needed to keep up with the exercises and how to do them properly. I'm not sure if they heard the desperation in my voice or if that's how they run their practice, but they were able to get me in immediately. And I mean immediately! Like I called at 9something and they got me in for 10am! I got to my appointment with Julie with weakness and numbness in my right leg. I felt better right away and have been getting stronger everyday and have no pain! I had an emergency with my dog and had to cancel my appointment for yesterday. Emily (one of the girls from the front desk I think) called me today to check on me and my dog! After one of the worst days of my life yesterday, it was so nice to hear from Emily. Casting is quick and painless, and the technicians are friendly and make you feel comfortable. They validate parking - $2 cash only. If you're a Brown student/staff/faculty, take the university shuttle to RIH and just avoid parking altogether. The garage spaces are limited, and it can be a headache. In the waiting room, there's a picture signed by Stephen Gostkowski to keep you entertained.
