I splurged in two areas for the wedding: my bouquet (see review of Fantasy Floral Design) and the cake. When we first started the planning (okay, maybe before that... like a few years ago), I knew I wanted something special for our cake. No regular tiers for us! Instead, I wanted the cake to look like a stack of books. My now-husband and I both love reading, so it was a natural choice. When I started looking around for a bakery, I quickly came across Studio Cake. The gallery on their website looks great--and BethAnn delivers on the promise of those beautiful photos! We had our first tasting at her Menlo Park bakery and loved three of the four flavors (the fourth was just a bit too rich). So BethAnn suggested we pick up a box of four more flavors (our choices) to try in a week or two. We enjoyed round two as well and finally settled on three flavors: vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream, almond cake with almond buttercream, and chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream. And the cake tasted so wonderful on our wedding day! But even more impressive was how the cake looked. We were blown away when we saw it--and so were our guests. In fact, several of them didn't realize that it was a cake at all... they simply thought it was another table setting (we used vintage books for our table centerpieces). BethAnn did a wonderful job designing the cake, and added a terrific "bookplate" on top with our names & the date. Fabulous, fabulous work! I highly recommend Studio Cake for your special occasions--it was definitely a splurge, but well worth it! read more

Update - It's been 8 months since the wedding, and I just got my pictures. I TOTALLY change my mind about the ivory color fondant because LOOK AT THIS CAKE! It's so pretty! Thank you Studio Cake, and thank you for replying to my review. You are right about the venue, there were a couple other minor hiccups. But seriously, look at this cake! Our cake tasted AMAZING. I give this baker a million stars for flavor. I only docked one point because I wasn't crazy about how the cake looked... They delivered the cake without the topper on, and it had to be positioned a certain way (discussed and noted at our tasting), which the reception venue wasn't aware of. So they placed it how they thought it'd work, but the tattoos I painted on the bride weren't visible (I'm a tattooed bride and painted matching tattoos on my topper's back for kicks). They also didn't provide a box for the cake top to take home, so we had to improvise and wrap it with cellophane. Luckily, it was a fondant. Had it been whipped cream, you know the deal. Lastly, I thought plain fondant was white. Rookie mistake on my part, and my cake arrived an ivory color. I wasn't happy about this at all. I didn't know I had to specifically ask for white. I thought white was standard. So, take note of this if using this baker. None of these were deal breakers, the cake was still pretty (I just really dislike ivory) and delicious. But for the sky-high price, making this clear would have been a plus. Who knows, maybe they did tell me at our tasting appointment, and I was too busy stuffing my face with all those miraculous flavors to catch it. read more

Like many other Yelpers who have written reviews here, Studio Cake made my wedding cake. Some people have their ~thing~ like "Keep me away from chocolate!" or "Just put that doughnut right on my thighs!" and while chocolate and doughnuts are a treat of course, a great cake is really my whole deal. I was pleasantly surprised to find Studio Cake as a preferred vendor of the Allied Arts Guild given that half of their PVs had websites that were inactive. They seemed hip and really "with it" so I had no doubt that they would do a great job. Daniella was really communicative throughout the whole process, from tasting to designing to delivery to payment. At the tasting, I told her that we had a watercolor/hand-painted idea running through what little decor we used for the event (if you've been to the AAG, you know they need very little help to make it look beautiful) and she really made sure that was brought to life with our cake - arguably the focal point of any wedding once the couple has walked down the aisle. We gave the team our invitation for reference and, though it ultimately didn't turn out as I was expecting, they still did a great job and the attention to detail they paid in painting the fondant was amazing. Delivery went smoothly because the crew knew the venue like the back of their hand, and it seamlessly looked like it belonged there as a permanent feature. Another thing I feel I should say is that the staff is very patient, especially with brides like myself who could simultaneously come across as both aloof and frenetic. As most people who have planned a wedding know full well, there really is no way of predicting how many people will show up to your event even after you've requested RSVPs. Around the time of ordering we were walking a fine line between a large difference in $$$ and leftover cake depending on the headcount, but after many emails we finally worked it out and it was really all thanks to their flexibility, customer service, and expertise. Studio Cake offers super inventive flavors and all of our guests raved about the taste of their dessert. Because we had a Fall wedding, we went with flavors that complemented the season like Sticky Apple Caramel and The Salty Dog, though every flavor we tried at the tasting was delicious. On November 8th, the day after our wedding, I was naturally on cloud 9 but if I were to break it down it would honestly be 50% because I married a good dude and 50% because we had cake for dayssss. If I ever need tasty desserts again anytime soon, I will definitely call upon Studio Cake for their services, 100%. read more

We just ordered a double-layered cake for a wedding reception. I guess the cake was tasty but not exceptional. The flower arrangements were very pretty. I was disappointed more with the service than with the cake. The cake was brought in in the early afternoon, the flower arrangement done and then left in the restaurant while the setup of the tables was happening a.k.a dust flying around. Also it completely spoiled the surprise for the bride and the groom as it was left visible. Also, we were never warned that the cake should not be in the fridge before being served. Just a side note, that they make their own fondant and it is actually DELICIOUS! So the decorations on my cake, I did eat some of it because it was actually good tasting fondant. All in all, they were very prompt and detailed witg everything, we were able to communicate entirely through email. And the cake came out PERFECT! I was disappointed many times in my search for a wedding cake, but when we finally sat down to meet with BethAnn, bells were ringing and angels were singing [in my head.... no I'm not crazy] and HALLELUJAH I knew I had found THE one! Being the OCD bride that I was, I made an inspiration panel for prospective bakeries to look at. Every other baker I met with politely dismissed me with an "oh... that's nice" with their eyes glazed over. But not BethAnn, who got totally excited and started doing concept sketches on the spot! Studio cake made us our cake for our wedding. I was very pleased with the outcome of our cake. We opted for cupcakes (for budget reasons) and a top cake but I will say that each and every cupcake was perfect. I was able to sketch out my vision, included a few Pintrest pictures for her to get the design I was looking for, and BethAnn delivered! She was very easy to communicate with via e-mail, very responsive and professional. I will advise that when you do the cake tasting, you don't get to taste all the items on the menu, but only the ones they are baking that week. So you may have to come more than once if you really want to try a certain flavor. I chose red velvet and tiramisu for our cake. All the guests were blown away by the red velvet, saying how they never had red velvet this moist with the perfect balance of sweetness. Another surprising feedback from my guests were that they really liked to eat the fondant, that says A LOT about the quality of the baked goods you receive from here :) Another cool tip she gave me was that you can bring her a swatch of your wedding colors and she can match it! read more

I've never had buttercream like this, light and sweet but not too sweet where you got sick of eating cake. The chocolate filling in between layers was to die for! And I can't get over how Moist the chocolate cake was, we sampled a few bakeries and had small family cakes done at another bakery, sadly those cakes paled in comparison. I can't say that I've been to a lot of weddings or know a lot about wedding cakes. I do, however, like to think that I know something special, classy, and well-crafted when I see it. When my wife and I were greeted by BethAnn at Studio Cake to discuss wedding cakes, we felt comfortable and inspired right away by her warm and friendly demeanor, and of course the beautiful array of cakes she had displayed throughout the kitchen. When we left an hour later, our bellies full of chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream and meyer lemon cake with raspberry-lemon buttercream among other delicious and unusual flavors, we knew we had found us a rock star cake vendor. BethAnn took a great deal of time to ask us about what we wanted in a cake -- colors, style, design flourishes. Do we like flowers? What kind of flowers? What size? I think we were fairly picky and specific, and she was speaking our language from the get-go. Over the next few weeks, she sent us several design revisions until we settled on a cake that looked amazing, and most importantly, reflected who we were. She even gave us more cake to taste later on, where we ended up falling in love with her coconut cake with coconut butter cream. And I don't really even like coconut that much. We ended up settling on a three layer cake with coconut cake/coconut butter cream as the top layer, chocolate/raspberry buttercream in the middle, and lemon/lemon buttercream on the base layer, all colored in white fondant with ribboning around each layer and fuchsia beading and fuchsia blushes in the flowers. I'm doing a horrible job trying to describe what BethAnn created, but I think that goes for anything that looks that amazing. read more

Cake, my favorite part of a wedding. I feel its a "make or break" factor. Planning my wedding, I was striving to hold a reputation, to have the best wedding cake. So choosing the best cake vendor would be super important. I stumbled on Studio Cake very randomly based on a photo of a cake design I like from The Knot. Looking on the website, seeing the flavor selections, and arranging a tasting was so easy. Once I met Beth Ann in person, I knew I didn't have to look any more. She was so energetic and excited to have us taste her cake. Pricing was also fitting for our budget. I was very impressed with the flavors, and cake quality. I am a fan of fondant and she had a one-of-a-kind fondant that I loved. The stand out flavors were "lovey dovey" and "funky monkey". When I gave her my design inspiration, it was executed and displayed perfectly.
