We have been wanting to try SusieCakes for a while but never got a chance until now as my husband picked it up for us. Their customer service is excellent and they were super kind and friendly. I am not impressed with the flavors hence the 3 stars overall, the cupcakes are way too sweet for my taste, the lemon cupcake tasted like synthetic lemon flavoring, that unmistakable chemical imitation taste rather than anything close to a real lemon (so it felt and tasted like how lemon scented surface cleaners smell - its a distinct flavor). All of their cupcakes had this fake artificial flavor taste in the frosting, which I think is ruining their frosting/cupcakes but that is just my opnion. The sponge under the frosting isn't bad, a bit dry, and dense, but not bad. Their carrot cake was good, but too sweet for my taste buds. read more

I had heard positive reviews of SuzieCakes, so, I ordered one dozen variety of cupcakes and four pupcakes. Cute store in a nice neighborhood. The boxes of items were packaged near and tidy. We began by cutting a pupcake in half for the two lil pups. At first they sniffed their new treat. The littlest pup tasted the whipped cream topping and continued the nibbling. Eventually the pups had eaten some of the cake. Not very enthusiastic. I guess that should have given us humans a hint. Anyway, we cut a human cupcake in half and shared it. The cake was dry and had very little flavor. It was like eating cardboard with frosting. We tried another one. It had lemon flavored frosting on a cupcake that was dry and had no flavor. Like eating cardboard with lemon flavored frosting. Yucky. Next we cut the chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting in half. I'm not sure if it was because the previous two had been so bad, but the chocolate cake was good and the chocolate frosting was good. We should have stopped while we were ahead. But, we were hopeful the next cupcake would be good. So, we cut a fourth cupcake in half and it was as bad as the first two. If I had known how awful the dozen variety pack would be, I would have just ordered four chocolate cupcakes and called it a win. But, I did not know. So, another big corporation, SuzieCakes, has gotten my $$$dollars and in exchange I got one decent chocolate cupcake and three cardboard tasting cupcakes with frosting and four pupcakes that even the lil pups don't like and eight remaining cupcakes that I'm not enthused about trying. I'll not fall for the SuzieCakes con job again. Next time I'll spend my hard earned $$$ at a place that sells decent pastries. There are many many good pastry shops that are a better bang for your buck. read more

If you're looking for a high-quality bakery for special occasions or a slice, I would recommend this place. There really aren't that many locations of this around the Bay Area which I wish they would have one in the South Bay eventually. My tride and true is always the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. They manually slice it for you so I would say it depends on the person depends on how big or small your slice is. If you want a custom order, I would definitely recommend to call in with a couple weeks notice. Inside is very bright and open and the service is always very friendly here. Seven minutes before closing, I called to ask if they had any more whole key lime pies. My lucky day, they did! I made it just in time (the pedestrian closures had me thrown for a loop). The gentleman I spoke to over the phone had it out and ready for me. I also picked up a strawberry and lemon poppyseed cupcake. Wow, their baked goods are incredible! The crust on the key lime pie was so so crispy crunchy and the key lime filling was light and tart. So glad I got a whole pie versus just a slice! I keep going to susie cakes hoping one day my mind will change about this place because everybody loves it so much. I got a nice assortment of cupcakes to try to sway my head and give it a fair shot. The vanilla cupcake, and the chocolate cupcake just a cake part of it all are both so different. On one hand of vanilla is more dense and kind of on the dry side yet the chocolate is so delicious and moist and not as dense. I wish both cakes were similar in texture however it is not, and it disappoints me. The vanilla cake doesn't have much taste to it all and it's not sweet however the frostings help even it out and balance it. I got a coconut and a lemon cupcake and my disappointment. The flavor is only in the frosting, and the cupcake is just a regular vanilla cupcake. The peanut butter and the mocha chocolate cupcakes, delicious, and good flavor that I enjoyed. The red velvet was delicious as well. I think if I ever come back, I would just stay away from the vanilla cupcakes and go for the chocolate based ones. read more

Their famous vanilla celebration cake (think funfetti) is a dense and moist cake with a thick frosting that I really enjoy, but this may not suit those who prefer fluffy or extra light buttercream. I really appreciate the staff at this location who are always nice at the register and know what to recommend. There are also other flavors unique to Susie like lemon, marble and old-fashioned chocolate that I've tried, and while I enjoyed them, my Asian parents would call it "too sweet." This particular location in Menlo has some seating indoors their very spacious interior, and so you can grab a slice of cake to sit and enjoy even if you don't order an entire cake. read more

I usually order a dutch apple pie from Marie Callender's for Thanksgiving but the past 3 years have not been good. I'm not sure what happened to their pies. I've had cakes from SusieCakes before and, in all honesty, they're too sweet for me. But I wanted to give their apple pie a try. Very Very glad I did. Pick up was scheduled and easy the day before Thanksgiving. I came at noon and it was quick. I also ordered their 4 pack of thanksgiving cupcakes. Dutch Apple Pie - 5/5 . Wasn't too sweet. I think they have the best red velvet cake ever! I like how the cheesecake frosting isn't too overly sweet or thick. I ordered an 8" birthday cake & it was delicious. Will definitely make the trip here whenever there's a request for red velvet but open to trying other cake flavors. We made the drive out here since this was on our Bay Area Bakery bucket list but honestly it was disappointing compared to other Bay Area bakeries. The cupcakes were ok but more in line with what a home baker can make. The thing that killed the place was the service. We waited first in line at the counter for a decent amount of time and were greeted with an employee who clearly did not want to be there. After he took our order our little one started doing a potty dance and we asked if they had a bathroom. He flatly said no, which is fine but most times when a little kid is clearly in distress I have had employees be kind enough to point me to the closest bathroom. I have been a regular customer of Susie's cake in Menlo Park for many years. Our family members's birthday cakes and other special occasions celebration cakes are mainly from Susan's cake. But this afternoon my in store experience was really unexpected and unpleasant, more over, it's quite shocking to hear from the store manager that adding sprinkles to pre- made non decorated cake needs to take 24 hours!! The store manager was cold, unreasonable and very rude and arrogant. She was not helpful at all. And she made me feel bad to a reasonable request! The staff members are extremely friendly and the service is always fast, but I really do not like the flavor of the desserts and find them to be super dry. Update to my review from five years ago: I came in today while in the neighborhood because I just had this sudden onset of The Need for Buttercream. I ordered four cupcakes: peanut butter, chocolate vanilla, vanilla, and blueberry pancake. It was about $20 for four cupcakes (very reasonably priced) and the service today was great! A friendly woman greeted me on arrival and tried her hardest to ensure I'd get rewards points (I gave up in the end; the app wasn't downloading for me). My box was packaged neatly and without a speck of frosting on any of the dividers (don't know how they did it). I ate the vanilla cupcake on a bench outside because TNFB is real. It was delicious! The carrot contains nuts and raisins which give it good mix of textures to chew. The lemon cake is on the sweet side vs tartine tart lemon meringue cake slice. On Friday October 24 6:00pm we had the best customer service experience ever here by the young adult with the colorful hair. Simply the friendliest and such a wonderful person. We were overwhelmed by the amazing selection. First time customers and she shared with us her favorites. The strawberry cupcake was so moist and the strawberry frosting was light & fluffy and tasted like fresh strawberries. My daughter selected a red velvet cup cake. Yummy! Wholly shamolly, purchased a cake for my 3 yo Friday oct 10 morning walked into the store to order. Was not given a receipt, no problem paid with my phone. Asked if I could p/u at 5pm. Arrived at 5 pm cake was no where in sight. Apparently the manager had no clue as to the order and because she sees "hundreds of people" everyday she could not remember she personally took the order. Never mind I had proof of the purchase on the phone, because she couldn't find the order on her register she would not give us the cake we clearly paid for. Trisha I believe her name was. I feel somewhat discriminated against because I guess I look like any random Latino to her. This young girl apparently cannot differentiate among people of my race. That's the underlying message I was getting. What is wrong with this generation of young people. If you can't handle the job do something else. Don't insult the customers who bring you business that pays your salary.
