Where do I even begin. I am not sure how much I am truly adding to the chorus of five-star reviews, only to say that my expectations were high given the rave reviews and they were exceeded. We contacted Studio Cake to create a custom birthday cake for our daughter's first birthday. It was a large outdoor party with the theme of "The Very Hunger Caterpillar", her favorite book. In the past we had gone with the "usual suspects" for wedding and birthday cakes, but this time wanted a special design that we knew had to be done by a specialist. From the outset, BethAnn could not have been more responsive. She was quick to respond and thorough about expectations and timeframes. She engaged with our ideas with nothing but excitement and positivity and made us feel like we were her only client. When it came time to pick up the cake, she was outgoing and friendly and enormously helpful with regards to advising us on how to store it, when to take it out for the party given the weather, and she even threw in a "smash cake" for free. We got the cake through Freedom Hall and Gardens Venue - they provided packaged wedding specials. On the day of the event, the cake was immaculate and looked just like the pictures. The chocolate cake was moist and so chocolately delicious! During the cake tasting at Freedom Hall, it was a little dry but the flavors were REALLY good. I figured the cake tasting wouldn't be as fresh as the actual cake anyway and I was right (thank goodness). The spiced apple cake was surprisingly delicious, considering I've never had anything like that before. They were also very responsive and easy to work with. We were cheapo and ordered a simply designed wedding cake (beautiful satin ribbon around each tier) and added our own decorations (orchid flowers and plastic dinosaurs). Studio Cake made our wedding cake last February, and we used them again for our anniversary cake this February. We had a little mishap with our cake topper not making it to our venue because it ended up being too large. Studio Cake originally recommended we put it on the table, but in the whirlwind that is a wedding day it accidentally was left at their shop. I really get the feeling that this sort of thing does not happen to these lovely ladies, because they felt awful, and gave us our anniversary cake for free as an apology. It really was not a big deal, and I also got the feeling that had we had time to alert them the day pf, they would have gotten it there. These women take pride in their yummy beautiful work, and have wonderful customer service. Their shop is adorable too. The cake for our wedding was simply lemon for two layers and simply chocolate for the other. I love love loved the chocolate, and really enjoyed the lemon, but it was just a tad too decadent and sweet for me. For our anniversary we went with a cherry almond that I can't remember the name of, but which was also delicious. The wedding cake they made beautiful with ribbon we matched to our colors and white pearl pins, and the anniversary cake was adorable. I will upload pictures later. Their buttercream is rich and thick and their cake is on the denser side but not dry. Fillings are a tad too sweet for my taste, but perfect for what my husband likes. The cakes are definitely rich, so small slices are satisfying, unlike cheap or bland cakes where people eat a ton without noticing or enjoying the flavors. I recommend doing a tasting with them to choose your flavors. They will deduct the cost of the tasting from your cake. I have heard people complain that tastings should be free, but let's be realistic, if you don't order, that is a big cost for them to put it together and spend the time with you, so it's just good business to charge a small fee to deter people who aren't seriously looking for a cake in the first place. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience with Studio Cake, and wish they were closer to our house so it would be more convenient to order from them more often. The cakes are great, but you really cannot beat their fabulous friendly personalities, and their wonderful customer service. The people themselves, their efforts to get things just right for the customer, and their clear love and enthusiasm for what they do make this business one that I would seek out over the competition. read more

For our wedding cake, we originally ordered with Cake Expression in San Jose since it was highly recommended, but they screwed up my husband's birthday cake so bad that we ended up cancelling the whole thing. We were so stressed out since our wedding was only a few months away and a lot of popular places get booked up fast. But lucky for us, we were the last order Studio Cake was able to book for that month. After one of the most decadent cake tastings (being the amazing person that she is...BethAnn also sent me home with all the leftovers), we decided to go with a 3-tier buttercream frosting, zero fondant (I hate fondant) and 2 different flavors (mocha dream and gluten-free peanut butter). I also described to her how I wanted my cake to look without any actual photographs, BethAnn drew up what she thought I'd like and I couldn't be happier with how pretty it turned out and how amazing the cake tasted on the day of. A lot of our guests even asked for seconds and thirds. I've tasted A LOT of wedding/birthday cakes in my life and Studio Cake, by far, has some of the best cakes ever. The best part of course were the smiles on the birthday girl's face. It was vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles and vanilla buttercream (called polky dots). The taste was light and airy, unlike many sugar-heavy cakes which seem so common. I had really high hopes for here. I've had a really difficult time finding a bakery in the bay area that meets the level of some of the ones I used to go to in Ohio (White Flower) and NJ (Butterflake). I actually went and got cupcakes from about ten bakeries in the area, looking for the perfect cake. This one, unfortunately, fell woefully flat. First: the price, I paid $45 for a cake not really decorated at all, with just a handful of sprinkles on it. The top had smudges and fingerprints Second: the buttercream was greasy feeling, this typically comes from cheaping out and using 'crisco' style shortening, rather then the bakery standard of hi-ratio shortening (lookup Sweetex). Third: the attitude of the staff was horrible. When I went to pay with credit card, they forced me to pay a 4% fee that was not mentioned on the website. Handling credit cards is a cost of doing business, on a $45 6inch cake, they should easily be able to eat the fees. read more

Studio Cake made my husband and I an AMAZING (both in looks and taste) piano-shaped cake for our white-tie wedding in Feb 2013 in San Jose, CA. Uploaded several photos for your viewing pleasure; see "10 photos" link above this review. BEFORE THE WEDDING The planning/tasting process was incredibly easy. BethAnn, the owner, is very responsive via email and answers any and all questions quickly. She is also super friendly and clearly loves what she does. We met with BethAnn twice, the first time for a general "this is the idea we have" discussion plus cake tasting and the second time to choose a flavor and finalize all of the design details. On each occasion, BethAnn listened to what we wanted, made her own suggestions, and thoroughly addressed any questions/concerns. She took our budget seriously and was honest with us about what we could or could not do with the money we had for cake. And with that information, we settled on a final cake design of a Steinway grand piano with the lid CLOSED--having the lid open would require a ton of additional detail out of our price range--and sheet music stand up with sheet music on it. Flavor: tiramisu (white chocolate cake, marsala cream cheese buttercream, espresso buttercream, fudge, kahlua). DAY OF THE WEDDING When the delivery guy arrived with the cake, he was concerned about us having to move the cake table later in the evening as we were using the same room for both ceremony and reception. When asked why it would be a problem--we were envisioning a basically flat cake on 3 legs--he said "I'm worried the lid could fall off." His reply to the confusion on our faces was "let me just show you the cake." And when he did, we nearly died. BethAnn and her staff had gone above and beyond the original design by OPENING the piano lid--and doing all of the inside details! It was an incredible piece of work; almost no one thought it was the cake! When our catering coordinator arrived and found out (she thought the cake hadn't arrived yet), she exclaimed "I'm not f***ing touching that!" (the delivery guy instructed a family member on how to move the cake). All of our guests thought it was simply a decorative piece in the middle of the room during the reception (even the ones we had told about having a piano-shaped cake). Everyone came up and took pictures as soon as they found out (our photographer went to town, too), and the entire room audibly cringed when we finally cut it. Not only was the outside absolutely stunning, but the inside was to die for. Not a single piece of cake was left on a plate (to the surprise of the catering coordinator) and guests came up to nibble on various fondant parts (we had to cut the piano keys into individual pieces because everyone wanted one!). Note that this is fondant that is actually edible; Studio Cake makes their fondant from scratch using white chocolate. And we had plenty of cake as BethAnn had sent over several boxes of sheet cake in addition to the piano-shaped masterpiece. IN SUMMARY Cake that will taste as amazing as it looks made by people who love what they do for (what seemed to us to be) a reasonable price. 5 stars. And the hubby and I are already looking forward to ordering a (smaller) piano cake from Studio Cake for our anniversary! read more

Studio Cake did our wedding cake in March of 2011 and BethAnn is SO great to work with! She has a lot of energy and is extremely creative. We only met with her in person once, to do the tasting, and the rest of our communication happened via email or phone. We went with the "Gone Bananas" flavor -- definitely an unusual flavor for wedding cake but the servers at the wedding could hardly get out the kitchen door before people descended upon their trays so it clearly wasn't a deterrent to people eating cake. We finally got a piece later that night and while it wasn't quite as good as I remembered it being at the tasting (which I suppose is to be expected when you are making it on a large scale and have to get the layers to stack), it still tasted yummy and way better than any other wedding cake I've tasted. It's worth noting that BethAnn makes her own fondant and while it still tastes like fondant, it is WAY better than any other fondant out there! My mother-in-law also, as a surprise, had BethAnn do our rehearsal dinner cake. That one was chocolate and really delicious AND it was possibly the most creative cake I have ever seen! The main part of the cake was a tent and it had my groom's and my feet sticking out and lots of climbing and camping gear (made out of fondant) all around. My cake at my wedding was made by Studios Cake, and I honestly don't believe we could have had a better cake vendor. My husband and I researched a lot of different places for our cake, and we went to about 7 cake tastings! Studios Cake was the only place where their cake really stood out. I had the best chocolate cake of my life during their cake tasting in their cookies and cream cake. It was beyond amazing! In addition, their professionalism during the cake tasting was impeccable, and they understood our vision for our cake. We ended up ordering a five tier square cake (large families so large wedding) with three different flavors. We had the cookies & cream, the lemon blueberry, and a pumpkin cake with snicker doodle frosting. All three flavors were amazing, and everyone loved all the cake flavors. When we walked into the reception and saw our cake, I was pretty amazed! It looked exactly how I wanted the cake to look. They were able to put together the perfect cake based off of some random information I gave them. A lot of other vendors we had tastings with didn't always quite understand the direction we were going with. However, studio cakes understood and made it come to life. If you ever watched Top Chef and seen Carla Hall say you can taste the love in food? Well you can taste the love in these cakes. It starts with BethAnn. When talking to her at our initial meeting, it is clearly shown that she loves her craft. She gets so excited when talking about cake and really wants to get to know the couple. She says it helps her be able to create a cake that she knows the couple would love. Even without tasting the cake yet, I could tell my, now, wife wanted to book her on the spot. Even her bio on the website shows that she used to be a NASA engineer and Stanford grad. She could probably be doing a whole lot of other things than baking cakes, but she's here baking because she loves it. We tried some samples of cake and loved it! She doesn't have all the flavors immediately available for tasting so be sure to ask for others if you feel like you want to try something else. I asked if she had any banana cake and her eyes lit up! She loves the banana cake they make and it got me excited to try it. There is so much joy and passion. She didn't have it right there, so we requested a 2nd tasting and she was sure to have banana that time. It was delicious. I can continue to go on about how awesome I think she is, but it would take forever. Another cool fact? She names all of her flavors. We ended up getting lovey dovey and gone bananas. The cake was a hit at the wedding. It was beautifully crafted. Their team customized it to our wedding design and it fit amazingly. Despite all this, our wedding cake was just perfect. BethAnn provided our family samples and we chose the Strawberry shortcake flavor for our reception. Our reception colors were purple and pink and BethAnn designed a beautiful cake based on designs I wanted with her own personal spin. We searched all over the bay area with no good wedding cake contenders, until we found Studio Cake. Daniella was very responsive with email and we set up a tasting right away, since we couldn't decide, she set up a to go box for another day so we could taste even more flavors. We decided on Lovey Dovey, Gone Bananas, and the Chocolate. We couldn't decide on a cake topper and Daniella suggested they make one out of white chocolate. BethAnn can turn any wacky idea into edible art. Studio Cake made my 50th birthday party cake, based on the Game of Life...each little tile along the road of life had one of my life's milestone's on it--birth, school, marriage, career, etc. The center was made to look like the game spinner and actually revolved! I splurged in two areas for the wedding: my bouquet (see review of Fantasy Floral Design) and the cake. When we first started the planning (okay, maybe before that... like a few years ago), I knew I wanted something special for our cake. No regular tiers for us! Instead, I wanted the cake to look like a stack of books. My now-husband and I both love reading, so it was a natural choice. When I started looking around for a bakery, I quickly came across Studio Cake. The gallery on their website looks great--and BethAnn delivers on the promise of those beautiful photos! We had our first tasting at her Menlo Park bakery and loved three of the four flavors (the fourth was just a bit too rich). So BethAnn suggested we pick up a box of four more flavors (our choices) to try in a week or two. We enjoyed round two as well and finally settled on three flavors: vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream, almond cake with almond buttercream, and chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream. And the cake tasted so wonderful on our wedding day! But even more impressive was how the cake looked. We were blown away when we saw it--and so were our guests. In fact, several of them didn't realize that it was a cake at all... they simply thought it was another table setting (we used vintage books for our table centerpieces). BethAnn did a wonderful job designing the cake, and added a terrific "bookplate" on top with our names & the date. Fabulous, fabulous work! I highly recommend Studio Cake for your special occasions--it was definitely a splurge, but well worth it! read more
