Burgers. Sandwiches. Fries. Nothing is going to blow your mind, but it's a diner. Solid, hearty food at a good price. I rolled with the Frisco Melt, which is a patty melt on sourdough topped with onion, tomato, american cheese, and russian dressing. Solid. One of my kids got chicken fingers and fries (solid), and the other split a tuna sandwich and the soup of the day (stuffed pepper) with my wife. The soup was surprisingly good, and the tuna sandwich was a tuna sandwich. What makes this place great isn't the run of the mill decor, but the sweethearts that work there. Our servers were so nice, even the ones who weren't waiting on us. And the lady who rung us up told me that the horrific green/orange/purple manicure that my four year old daughter gave me looked great, which was definitely not true, but much appreciated.

Locals told us: Get great sandwiches from the deli in this convenience store!…read more Shortstop Deli has been "hidden" in a convenience store in the "lower northside" of Ithaca NY since 1978! Great design-your-own sandwiches, and if you like, friendly suggestions from the staff. It was our first time in, and their helpful hints quickly showed they have every filling (savory seitan!) and every topping and a nice variety of breads. We got their "Italian mix" of cold cuts, which included Genoa salami, sweet tender thin-sliced baked ham, and meats that were either mortadella and capicola or at least richly-flavored alternates, provalone cheese, tomato, onions, a light amount of lettuce brightened with a splash of Italian dressing and a dash of fresh salad-oil, and a sprinkling of what we call "hots": lightly-spicy pickled peppers. All this on fresh French bread, which could have been with sesame, or could have been ciabatta or whole-wheat French or several others. We added a light scatter of our own crushed pistachios, which are in some mortadellas. Nobody said this couldn't be fun :-) The sandwich was a heavenly armful, shared amongst us on one of our woodsy picnics. Extra kudos again to their cheerful helpful (patient) staff!

After a long hiatus, I finally made my triumphant return to North, this time with my girlfriend, to relive the magic and, of course, put their food to the test. We went for the Tompkins Burger ($8.49) -- a classic setup with onions, tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce. No sauce included, but that's a choose-your-own-adventure situation at the condiment station. My girlfriend gave it a 7/10, and honestly, that feels right. It's a solid, no-nonsense burger that exceeded my size expectations (which is half the battle with late-night food). I also really love their the boneless wings. Specifically, the sweet chili and honey mustard flavors. Maybe I'm biased (I would eat chicken for every meal if society allowed it), but these wings slap. Flavorful, saucy, and the perfect balance of sweet and tangy -- 10/10 would recommend :) Beyond the hot food, Nasties is the ultimate convenience stop. Need snacks? Drinks? It's so new (check out this article:…read morehttps://ithacavoice.org/2024/07/new-businesses-to-add-dining-options-in-downtown-ithaca/) that it's not even on Google Reviews yet, but I've already visited a handful of times since it's conveniently located right near the main Downtown OurBus stop. Today, I tried their Very Berry Protein Shake, and it was surprisingly good. I'm usually not a fan of peanut butter, but I finished the whole thing! They use Gold Standard protein (my go-to), so I'm guessing it has around 24g of protein, which is a solid boost. It even got me thinking I should start making my own shakes instead of sticking to the basics. The staff adds to the charm - there's an older gentleman, who I think might be the owner, and he was incredibly kind and friendly. I highly recommend checking this place out! Maybe I caught Ithaca on a bad day, but it felt crowded, chaotic, impossible to park in, and somehow I still couldn't find a place that made me want to stop and eat. Hungry, frustrated, and starting to question my life choices, I got back on the road. A few minutes later I stumbled onto Mike's Mr. Subs in Dryden. What a find. Easy parking. No line. Friendly service. The place sits at a quaint little intersection in a town that looks like it belongs on a postcard. I ordered the chicken cheddar bacon wrap. Absolutely ridiculous. Now, I was starving, so I did consider the possibility that I would've eaten a seat cushion and called it delicious. But this thing was genuinely incredible. Loaded with chicken, bacon, cheddar, and somehow exactly what I needed after my failed Ithaca adventure. The whole experience felt like one of those road trip discoveries you remember years later.
