I approved the work but, as is customary, advised the owner to call me should the estimate increase, which she agreed to. I also left a small pendant that just needed a 5 cent "O" ring which I wanted soldered shut; maybe a $20 job. I was advised she would call me when it was finished but I got no call. I called and was advised by the owner that the pieces were just returned to the shop that day (coincidence). I arrived at Scanlan shortly after the call and there were a number of ladies seated at the owner's desk with her (can't remember her name). She brought out my pieces and told me the total was over $800. I advised her that was not the price we agreed on at which time she asked me to step down to the register (and away from the ladies at her desk) to discuss it. I reminded her that she provided me an estimate and agreed to call me should the estimate change. She ultimately advised me she would charge me $300 for the ring and my grand total somehow ended up being $385.00. I'm no math wiz but $300 X 5% tax is $315 which means she changed me $70.00 for the "O" ring and solder....the whole thing was ridiculous! As far as her "unique" pieces, she told me the first time we talked that she purchases unwanted jewelry from people and resets the stones in her own settings. You never know what you're getting at a shop like this. And it's funny because she bragged to me that she was second generation jeweler. I will not be returning.

They even gave me options on sending my cue back to them for a custom shaft. Remember the reunion scenes in Grosse Pointe Blank with the cool 80s music and dancing in the…read moregymnasium? I hated high school, but I love that movie. I made several trips to Rock 'n Roll Land to look for 45s last summer because I cooked up a scheme in my head where I was going to attend my 30th reunion and spin records as the DJ. I was an outcast kid back in high school, painfully shy and unable to approach girls. But now I was going to return as a cool adult, and blow everyone away as the music-savvy DJ spinning all the sounds from our youth, keeping the vibe going all night, taking requests from my vast catalogue of vinyl. All the girls who rejected me 30 years ago will see what a cool guy I really am and now they'll regret that they wouldn't go on dates with me. So I'm combing through the 45s (and trust me, there is a sh*tload there), looking for ones to play at the reunion, and those of you who collect 45s will understand what it's like when you're "in the zone." Time distorts and your peripheral vision constricts to a pin point. The outside world falls away as the records hooked to your thumb go flip...flip...flip...flip...flip. It can be an almost meditative process in a way. Within the span of one second, your brain processes a round of questions for each record you flip: Do I already have this one? Is it in better shape than the one I have? Could I use this for a __-themed party? Wow, this is rare one for sure, but would I ever play it? Honestly, would I ever play it or would it just take up more space? Does it have novelty value only to me? Do I have a friend who'd appreciate it more than me and should I snatch it up for him? So I'm doing this for god knows how long. Hours maybe. Because the owners are so nice, they didn't tell me that my record browsing had kept them there way past closing time. They had turned off the music, dimmed the lights, and stood by door for almost 40 minutes, and I hadn't even noticed. That's how "in the zone" I was. What other shop owners would do that for a customer? Seriously, who does that? Apart from having a ton of continually rotating stock of albums and music merchandise, they're really good to their customers. So how was my 30th reunion, you might ask? I chickened out and didn't go.

For a new and used record store you'd think they'd buy a wide variety of collections, but it's…read moreseems the buyers/owners are interested in only very obscure or multiples of the same hit records. Same issue with the new vinyl selections - a ton of obscurities and a new well known artist thrown in there so they can make a few bucks. Good luck trying to search the 45s and 12" singles. I suppose it's their store and they can put up whatever they want for sale. There are places in Rhinelander and the Fox Valley that have much better selections from punk to 40s to 2020s with all genres. There's a weird vibe in GB of music store employees having a music snob air about them. No one wants to hear what wisdom they have to impart to a purchasing customer about the band or piece they're buying, especially trying to one up the customer. Be happy you're providing the public what they want versus being downtrodden on what people buy. Not impressed. That said, I enjoyed the browsing and the small selection of older music mags and pseudo vintage shirts. The older equipment was a nice addition too. They're a 2.5 but selected 3, because they're local and I want to support any vintage/retro/recycle shop.

I wish I were closer to try things out in person, but regardless I highly recommend calling them and talking through things - they'll not only help you choose the right gear, but also discuss unlisted specials or ways to save. I didn't actually read other Yelp reviews but doing so now it seems some have concerns about stock - all the more reason to just call them and talk! I haven't returned anything so can't comment on the restocking fee, but I think it makes sense as they'd have to sell it as open box and if you're looking for the best price, they have to manage costs (so they don't offer free returns / free restocking). For that, check out Amazon or Best Buy, but you won't get nearly as great of service or value imo.

Buyer Beware!! I…read morerecently contacted Hi-Fi Heaven to purchase an open box amp listed on their website. I spoke to salesperson "Greg" who was happy to confirm how I could purchase the item through Zelle for a discount, but he never thought it relevant to tell me they didn't actually have the open box item in stock. After I paid online, he indicated the payment was received and that he'd be sending me a tracking #. When the tracking # never arrived days later, I called the store and spoke to a different salesperson who was surprised to hear the order was even taken in the first place, as they said they didn't actually have the open box amp they just sold me. I was told several more "open box" amps would be shipped soon by the manufacturer if I wanted to wait. All the while, the same amp was still listed for sale on their website. There are obviously a few things fishy in Hi-Fi Heaven! For one, "open box" usually implies it's a customer return, not a used item coming from the manufacture. Are they actually selling 'open box' returns from their customers or actually "reconditioned" units they receive from the manufacture? Second, it's just not good business to take a customer's money when knowing full well they don't actually have the item they are selling. Reputable companies don't do this. The one thing I will give them credit for, which is why this isn't a 1 star review, is that when I asked them for my money back they did refund me without trouble or delay. I should've noticed they don't actually indicate whether anything they list for sale on their website is in stock or not. They will happily take your money either way and apparently this common practice with these guys based on other reviews. Great way to treat your customers guys!
