I was at home on a Sunday afternoon, lying on the couch, procrastinating while watching TV, deciding whether or not to go to hit the gym that day. All of a sudden, this totally ripped, super cool looking Japanese guy appeared on this Spy Series television show, and I got immediately inspired and decided at that exact moment that I needed to stop procrastinating and get off the couch and go work out. I left the house and walked to the gym. I took the escalator up and as I got off at the top, I literally bumped into this totally ripped, super cool looking Japanese guy and realized that it was the same guy I had just seen on TV ! We have been friends ever since, and Bill has been my exclusive trainer since then. What I love about being trained by Bill is that he knows the importance of incorporating NEW things into your workout realm every few months. It has set the bar high for me every year of the thirteen that I have been blessed to call Bill my friend and Trainer. Bill was the first person I recall to ever say the words"kettle-bell" in Hawaii ! I am so grateful to him for always re-callibrating my whole program and way of thinking every few months since I started training under him. It keeps things from getting stale and routine and well... boring ! The body and brain really only respond and change when we give them new and challenging things to do, and in my opinion, no one teaches those principles while incorporating that theory through fresh and challenging training sessions better than Bil Maeda. My first question to him was, "How can you have worked out the with same trainer for 3 years and not be bored?" My personal history is riddled with workout regimens that have come and gone because, in the end, they just get boring. Bill has kept things fresh for two years, with the goal of making me "unbreakable" -- strong and injury-free. We started with foundational exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, planks, step-ups, lunges, twisting core exercises, etc.) to make sure that I had a solid base of strength before moving on to more dynamic movements and heavier weights. At every step of the way, Bill focused on teaching strict form for every exercise. I share his belief that maintaining good form, with light or heavy weights, ensures that one gets the most out of every exercise and avoids injury. In the last two years, Bill has mixed in kettlebells (thruster, long cycle, snatch), traditional power lifting (squat, bench, deadlift), punching & kicking, sandbags, weighted swinging clubs, body weight movements, and a variety of isometric exercises. I participate in a variety of other sports and events (soccer, triathlons, obstacle races, endurance events), and Bill designs my workouts to help me prepare specifically for them.

I do not even consider attending other classes because if I have to do the basic salsa step for another hour straight, I may just shed a few tears. There are numerous differences between Chelsey and other zumba teachers. First of all Chelsey has an incredible amount of enthusiasm-she is always totally stoked to teach her class and has an endless amount of energy. Chelsey is a former dancer. There's a difference between dancers and those who like to dance. It's evident in her choreography and the way she hits her moves. Her steps are always unique and creative between each dance. Third, she has the biggest heart. She is so grateful to her Zumba family and this shows when she makes connections and forms friendships with those who come to her class. She is extremely welcoming and friendly. When I first started going, I thought, "Everyone here knows each other. I totally don't belong here." But everyone is super nice and Chelsey makes an effort to get to know you. She spends the time before each class chatting with folks and hugs everyone on the way out. She mixes latin songs with popular songs you know and sing along to with the radio in the car. But you end up singing along to those songs you previously didn't know. She has a ton of routines and changes it up all the time so it's never boring. She has color themes. If you friend her on FB she'll post the color she's wearing to class that day and people can match her if they want-it makes the class even more fun! But, the big thing for me is Chelsey's class is a serious workout. It is hard for me to work up a sweat-check that-break a sweat in most other zumba classes, but Chelsey's class is on a whole 'nother level. Don't be worried for you beginners out there-there are grandmas and middle school girls who come and everyone dances at their own comfort level. You do what works for you. No one passes judgement. If you spend any time and effort attending a Zumba class, this is the one to attend. I have tried other class on island and off and its no comparison. Chelsey is upbeat and her moves, mixes, and energy is modern. However you'll find students of all ages here, teens to grandparents. I promise you though, if you aren't here to sweat you're in the wrong place, you are getting an ultimate workout.
