I was at home on a Sunday afternoon, lying on the couch, procrastinating while watching TV, deciding whether or not to go to hit the gym that day. All of a sudden, this totally ripped, super cool looking Japanese guy appeared on this Spy Series television show, and I got immediately inspired and decided at that exact moment that I needed to stop procrastinating and get off the couch and go work out. I left the house and walked to the gym. I took the escalator up and as I got off at the top, I literally bumped into this totally ripped, super cool looking Japanese guy and realized that it was the same guy I had just seen on TV ! We have been friends ever since, and Bill has been my exclusive trainer since then. What I love about being trained by Bill is that he knows the importance of incorporating NEW things into your workout realm every few months. It has set the bar high for me every year of the thirteen that I have been blessed to call Bill my friend and Trainer. Bill was the first person I recall to ever say the words"kettle-bell" in Hawaii ! I am so grateful to him for always re-callibrating my whole program and way of thinking every few months since I started training under him. It keeps things from getting stale and routine and well... boring ! The body and brain really only respond and change when we give them new and challenging things to do, and in my opinion, no one teaches those principles while incorporating that theory through fresh and challenging training sessions better than Bil Maeda. Here we are all these years later, and Bill i s still inspiring me, as he did that day on TV, to get off that couch and get a great workout in every day !

My first question to him was, "How can you have worked out the with same trainer for 3 years and not be bored?" My personal history is riddled with workout regimens that have come and gone because, in the end, they just get boring. Bill has kept things fresh for two years, with the goal of making me "unbreakable" -- strong and injury-free. We started with foundational exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, planks, step-ups, lunges, twisting core exercises, etc.) to make sure that I had a solid base of strength before moving on to more dynamic movements and heavier weights. At every step of the way, Bill focused on teaching strict form for every exercise. I share his belief that maintaining good form, with light or heavy weights, ensures that one gets the most out of every exercise and avoids injury. In the last two years, Bill has mixed in kettlebells (thruster, long cycle, snatch), traditional power lifting (squat, bench, deadlift), punching & kicking, sandbags, weighted swinging clubs, body weight movements, and a variety of isometric exercises. I participate in a variety of other sports and events (soccer, triathlons, obstacle races, endurance events), and Bill designs my workouts to help me prepare specifically for them.

There's a difference between dancers and those who like to dance. It's evident in her choreography and the way she hits her moves. Her steps are always unique and creative between each dance. Third, she has the biggest heart. She is so grateful to her Zumba family and this shows when she makes connections and forms friendships with those who come to her class. She is extremely welcoming and friendly. When I first started going, I thought, "Everyone here knows each other. I totally don't belong here." But everyone is super nice and Chelsey makes an effort to get to know you. She spends the time before each class chatting with folks and hugs everyone on the way out. She mixes latin songs with popular songs you know and sing along to with the radio in the car. But you end up singing along to those songs you previously didn't know. She has a ton of routines and changes it up all the time so it's never boring. She has color themes. If you friend her on FB she'll post the color she's wearing to class that day and people can match her if they want-it makes the class even more fun! But, the big thing for me is Chelsey's class is a serious workout. It is hard for me to work up a sweat-check that-break a sweat in most other zumba classes, but Chelsey's class is on a whole 'nother level. Don't be worried for you beginners out there-there are grandmas and middle school girls who come and everyone dances at their own comfort level. You do what works for you. No one passes judgement. If you spend any time and effort attending a Zumba class, this is the one to attend. I promise you though, if you aren't here to sweat you're in the wrong place, you are getting an ultimate workout. I have gone weekly since January for assisted stretching because it complements my swimming and walking activities. As I've gotten older, my muscles are tighter and stretching on my own wasn't effective. Stretch Lab's flexologists help my body tremendously and adapt their stretches to my previous surgeries. OrthoSport in Niu Valley…read morewas one of the few options on the island; although it was a bit of commute, it's turned out to be a great choice. A customer's experience with such personalized service usually banks on their relationship with their therapist. In this case, we are fortunate to be aligned with Summer. She's a pro - patient, clear in her exercise instructions, encouraging (yet firm), and flexible with some of our last minute scheduling issues (Niu Valley is quite a commute from Moanalua). The facility is right behind Jack in the Box on Kalanianaole Hwy; the light at the left turning lane can try your patience. Parking during lunch hour can be a little challenging; fortunately it is very large parking lot shared by other businesses. They do a nice job with scheduling/changing your appointments, and the email reminders really do help (as does the $50 penalty if you cancel in less than 24 hours). All in all, the experience of going through this form of PT along with the physical exertion without impact to your joints is definitely worthwhile!

I WOULD NOT USE ORTHO SPORT-HERE IS WHY…read more For everyone of my visits Kevin arrived 3 to 4 minutes late. Almost every visit was ended at least 5 minutes before the hour. About 20% of the session Kevin was writing notes about what just happened. Every 10th session was almost entirely spent recording measurements and strength of where I was at. I was told by Kevin that Medicare required this. I spoke to Medicare and was told that they do not require reports. I am approaching the 4th month of my recovery. This is the time when my strengthening is most important as I am limping from muscle weakness. Kevin has told me he is cutting my sessions from 2 to 1 session per week. I asked why and he told me that Medicare will not be approving 2 sessions. I asked Medicare about this. They referred me to page 48 of the Medicare Handbook which says if the Doctor prescribes 2 visits per week that is what will happen. Medicare does not challenge what a Doctor thinks is necessary. Attached are photos from the current Medicare Handbook that contradict what I was told by Ortho Sport. Even with this Ortho Sport still stands by their contradictory statements. I have found a different physical therapy provider who does NOT makeup rules. I also realize by what I have written above that my 1 hour session was "at best about 30 minutes of physical therapy". Many Physical Therapists offer websites or apps that show you videos of the suggested exercises to do. They also offer other options to help with your recovery. Ortho Sport merely prints out a sheet of paper. It is very hard to believe that Ortho Sport has 241 reviews and everyone is 5 stars. That is not likely considering life is not perfect. Please consider what I have written in making your decision. I have given the honest facts of my experience. Ortho Sport has stood by what Medicare said is not true even though it is in writing and told to me explicitly when I spoke with them.

She also pushes me to do a little more, try a little harder. I know that I'd never do this on my own. The gym is in a strip mall behind Hawaii Kai Costco. They have it set up so there are stations. Sometimes, another trainer will be working with another person, but other than that, there are no other people working out. After using a mat or piece of equipment, you always wipe it down. I appreciate the care they take in their gym.

He tailors programs specifically for your needs, ensuring you're not just another number in the system. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff genuinely cares about your recovery. After my back surgery, I feel much more at ease. I have spoken with another patient who was there at the same time and she said that he was the only one she trusted and that she would fly over from another island to get a treatment from Dr. Jimmy. That speaks volumes. If you are serious about your recovery and health and are willing to put the time in then this is your spot.

It got to a point where I had trouble walking after sitting for long periods of time and I could barely do a squat. So I decided to check out The Forge. On my first visit, they went over my personal goals and did an assessment. The goals were necessary for me to visualize because it is the end goal in order for me to get better. I needed to heal completely and not have a temporary fix on my injury. On days where I would feel less pain, my heart wanted to jump back into doing the intense workouts next door. However, through their system, I was reminded that I must completely heal before I re-injure myself. I finished their program and also learned a lot of things about my physical limitations and health and ways to improve. I am able to walk and squat now with no pain in my left knee. I highly recommend coming to see the guys at The Forge for all your physical therapy needs, even the minor injuries..... it's always better to take care of the injury when it's small. They really show that they care about you. LOCATION: They are on the Makai side of Waimanu Street, Kokohead side off of Ward Ave. The backside of their office is F45 Ala Moana. PARKING: They are by appointment only, they have a few spots in front and there's always a spot because only their clients park in front. Free parking. SERVICE: The staff is amazing! They really show that they care about you. I felt comfortable there. I didn't feel like a client, I felt like family there. COST: Depends on your insurance and injury.... Best to inquire with them I highly recommend coming here... these guys know what they are doing.

If it's your first experience in a group fitness class, do not be afraid to ask questions and get to understand the machines! Music is fun but sometimes tricky to hear the coaches well enough to understand exactly what to do especially if it's your first time. BUT if that's the case, just smile and work hard -- even if it's not exactly what they say to do you'll still get a great workout in :) TIPS & TRICKS: * They do offer cheaper validated parking but if you're willing to get a walking warm up in before your class, just park at the Kakaako Waterfront Park! * Tons of awesome spots around SALT too, so get some post workout snacks after. * Ask about different membership opportunities, they have a lot of options might fit your lifestyle better (monthly passes, special week passes, or punch passes) * Last but not least, HAVE FUN AND GET YOUR SWEAT ON!

Frank was very patient explaining everything very clearly so that I'll be successful in the group classes. I found Frank very knowledgeable and attentive to how to strengthen the different muscles, build stamina and avoid injuries. He helped build my independence by briefly explaining what each exercise is doing and teaching me how to adjust the rings on the Pilates Reformer, move the equipment and how to care for them.
