We walked in on a Saturday night and waited about 10 minutes before a waitress acknowledged us we had approached her, When I asked how long the wait would be, she told us 15 minutes. After waiting over 25 minutes, I asked again and was met with an attitude--she repeatedly said, "You need to wait," without providing any timeframe. Another waiter eventually stepped in and seated us in the bar area. While we were waiting, two other parties walked in and never received a wait time or any type of customer service at all. After standing around visibly confused and frustrated, both parties eventually walked out. This should be a serious concern, as it was clear the restaurant was understaffed and actively losing business. I asked if the bar was open seating and was told only the bar top was available, not the tables. However, while we were still waiting, we watched other guests walk in, get seated, and be served, which added to the frustration and confusion. Trying to still enjoy our night, we ordered salads, pizza, drinks, a bacon cheeseburger for my son, and wings. The wings came out quickly, and the pizza, salad, and drinks followed. However, my son's cheeseburger never arrived. The server later admitted he forgot to put it into the system and only entered it after we asked. My son didn't receive his food until we were almost finished and ready to leave. To make matters worse, we realized while eating that the chicken wings were undercooked and still raw. This is a serious health concern--especially since I am pregnant, but truly for anyone. My son later started feeling sick, and I strongly believe it was due to the undercooked chicken. I've given them multiple chances, but the pattern hasn't changed. I truly hope the owners address the workflow and timing because this place could be great with more attention to detail. However, on every occasion, when I arrive at the establishment past the designated pickup time, the pizza is consistently not yet prepared. What a great place to stop for lunch after shopping at the strip mall!!!! We couldn't decide where to go and we looked on Yelp for burgers or pizza. My husband was really excited to see they had a Straw Hat pizza still in Milpitas so we went there. When we pulled up, it looked deserted and thought "oh no" maybe it wasn't a good idea but we decided to go in anyway. WE COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG!!! The bartender/waitress was super sweet the minute we walked in. She was attentive, kind and very personable. She took our order right away and it didnt take long for us to get our food and drinks. She also told us about the specials they had that day (and on the other days as well). While we waited, my husband and I enjoyed chatting with her. Even though the place was empty on a Saturday, she was telling us about all the watch-parties they have (football, MMA fights) as well as large gatherings for parties and other groups. They have TV's everywhere but they're not extremely loud where you can't have a conversation with someone. The place was super clean (almost sterile LOL) and the service was exceptional. They seem to care about their community and that's rare to come by these days. Now to the food...it was hot and delicious! We got a pizza and some garlic twists. My husband said it took him back to his childhood going to Straw Hat. Again, our waitress was very attentive and asked how the food was and if there was anything else we needed. I got the 6 piece wings from their happy hour menu and was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. Honestly, enjoyed my experience at Straw Hat yesterday for the play off game! Met up with my parents and we relaxed in a spacious, not too hectic, restaurant space. It's pretty casual, but at the same time festive in sports related decore and still gave off a pub like atmosphere, BUT MAKE IT KID FRIENDLY. There is a section of the restaurant with a pick up/to go entrance and kids mini arcade. Plenty of seating, a plethora of tvs to watch the games on, and a full bar. Service is quick and run solely at the time by one man. Our waiter was pretty awesome and we of course had to give him more than a 15% tip. Food isn't the best American food, but the prices and taste were good enough. Portions were a little small, but we did leave full and happy at the end of the game! The Milpitas restaurant and atmosphere is clean, modern, and inviting, with a bar, plenty of indoor seating, multiple TV's on the wall, and a tiny arcade/game area for kids. We only ordered for takeout, but the customer service upon arrival was excellent, and the worker provided condiments, cheese, peppers, and sides of ranch at no extra cost. We got "The Works" and it was loaded with sauce, cheese, and flavorful toppings, and the crust was nice and crisp at the bottom (though not exactly gourmet, which I wouldn't expect for a chain like this, except it's a bit pricy for what you get). I have never been inside a Straw Hat everl. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and it was empty. Parking lot had a few vehicles which I didn't mind at all. Plenty of parking as well. Former Chilis restaurant building shares lot with Walgreens, Days inn and the former Big Lots. First impression, it was very well-maintained in the front and you can smell that they really care of the landscaping and cleanliness. Smelling cleaning supplies doesn't bother me because it lets me know practicing cleanliness. Aside from the spacious dining area , Their are lots of TV sets all around and a full bar is available. Dining tables were clean and had no condiments on them... just a very clean, empty table. We waited a little bit to get seated, even though it was empty. We were by the kiosk for maybe five minutes before anybody noticed. When we sat down, we unfolded the menu and found a lot of appetizers as well as pizza, burgers, salads, wings and soups. Ordered 1) jalapeño poppers- I like how the jalapeño were left whole and it was stuffed with cheese. Some places will mince the chopped pepper and cheese then forming into a pepper shape and roll it in breadcrumbs, but I like whole jalapeños with the cheese inside. It came with 6 small peppers with a watery ranch dressing. I believe the peppers were frozen and fried to order. It doesn't feel like it was Restaurant made. At $10,99, it was overpriced for the small sized poppers and quantity. 3/5 $10.99 2) Sunny side burger was grilled to medium rare, as requested. This Burger was simple with added bacon and fried egg. It came with a side of fries and a pickle. The burger was actually pretty good. It had a nice flavor, soft buns, juicy, and the pairing with the egg and bacon made it even more better. Also the fries Were lightly crispy crunchy in the best way possible. I am not a french fry person as I usually like steak fries or crinkle cut fries, but these fries I would not pass up in fact, maybe the next time I return I might just order this burger instead of the pizza. 5/5 $15.99 3) chicken, bacon, ranch pizza in small round plastic tray arrived warm and cut. I believe in eight small pieces. Since it was a small pizza, the slices were like appetizer + sizes. Chicken pieces were very dry. In my opinion. this is my go to Pizza as I avoid the ones with processed, deli meats, such as pepperoni, salami, etc, as much as I can. She is an older Hispanic woman that appeared to have no time for me. If they were busy I would have understood but they're not that busy. The malai and saag are the best Indian style pizza. Not hot, but the flavor of the sauces come through. Dough is soft and the right thickness. Their veggie has generous toppings not like the stingy pizza chains. Chicken tikka also has a good spice and negligible heat which I prefer so that the spice and meat taste comes through. Sausage, green peppers, olive pizza came straight from the kitchen, nothing like a fresh pizza and our families enjoyed it. Potato wedges delicious with ranch and the beer and Johnny Walker black were nice to get my wife and I into a relaxed and talkative mood. Interior has expensive looking signed jerseys and sports memorabilia for local football and basketball teams, there are also tons of TVs with different sports playing all throughout the restaurant and bar. This is not your typical chain pizza joint. First off, it took over an old Chili's building so it is a full restaurant in size, not just a one room pizza joint with bench tables. There are servers here, so you can snag a table and get some service. There is also a full bar here with a bar area/scene aka regulars. They also added a ton of TV's and a splashing of actual sports memorabilia, so definite sports bar vibe. And during a legit Bay Area game day (Warriors or Niners), this place can attract quite the crowds. I was invited to meet up with an old buddy, who now lives in the 408. Football Sunday game day, bar area was packed. The good is TV screens everywhere, so every angle has a nice viewpoint. The bad, is that you are crammed in this space, like elbow to elbow. But for a social sporting gathering, this is all the norm. Bloody Mary ($13/3.5*) Nice size and nice texture with it not being too thick. Their mix is spicy, but in that Tabasco way, versus horseradish way. Very little specs actually in their bloody mix. Nice traditional garnishing of celery and olives. Brews on Tap ($8ish) We were drinking 805s that day. All big-name breweries here, which is not surprising for a chain restaurant. I'm not super picky so I was fine with the selection here. And with this type of food, it was totally on par. Lemon Pepper Wings ($20ish for 12/3.5*) Totally a frozen ready-made product. Again for a chain that is not surprising. A crunchy batter surrounds except they will toss in a sauce or a rub to your specs. Loved the crunch here as I've had this brand of wings before from other chains. Super small wings tho but they are a tender and fatty wing. The lemon pepper spicing on the outside made the wing more salty, than spicy. Didn't love these, but with ample brews during a game, I was fine with them. Small Pizza with 3 toppings ($20/4*) Chose Italian Sausage, Linguisa and Mushroom. They do not skimp on the toppings here, totally loaded. Really makes the pizza flavor explode. Even with their cracker-like texture of a crust, each bite seemed like it was 75% toppings and 25% crust. A little lopsided, but again with a game and beers, ya just can't get too fussy about it. I actually liked their sauce here as it just taste like classic pizza sauce, the kind I grew up with as a surburban American. I also want to point out that their cheese was really unique. It was super soft and creamy, like almost liquid-y when hot, and even as it cooled, it did not turn into a rubbery texture, which is all too common for American pizza places. Never experienced this before, almost like they use a fresher mozzarella here, like the wet ones. But their crust is really weird. Like it was super airy and light. Gave it more of a cracker sensation than a bread sensation. Very little chew, more flaky. Kind of a deal breaker for me if I were just having a pizza experience. The service I've received in my past two visits have been very good. I've tried the Bacon Ranch Burger, and the Crispy Chicken sandwich so far. The burger is a good size. The patty has quantity, but quality/taste is so so. The bacon is okay. Not too thin, not too thick. Not sure if I could ask for it to be crunchier. The brioche bun and produce (lettuce, tomatoes, and onions) are top notch. The fries were pretty good but I felt like there wasn't enough. The Crispy Chicken sandwich feels like a bait and switch. Based off the pictures I see from their website, it supposed to be a breaded piece of chicken breast. Something that looks like a piece of real meat. What I got is something that I could have gotten from fast food joints...flat, cheaper breading, and generally lower quality meat. I felt so ripped off. If this wasn't takeout, I would have asked for my money back. The potato wedges were quite good. I prefer them over the fries. Overall, this would have been a 4 star review except the bait and switch on the Crispy Chicken sandwich dropped it down 2 stars. This is for the OWNERS ONLY! Love your pizza love coming here ... but please please stop using that strong smell of fabuloso cleaning product while people are eating ... whatever you are using to wipe down the tables is so strong in smell that when you guys clean while we eat it's all we can taste and smell. Please take this into consideration because I'm a customer who comes and brings in multiple guests. Everything is truly enjoyable until you guys bring out the cleaning products. It's horrible other than that everything is great... also maybe tell your servers to act like they enjoy their jobs and aren't dying of misery because the food is good... read more
