Nothing about this experience was worth recommending. In a nearly empty restaurant, it took an hour to get our entrees after ordering. When the food arrived, the portions were small (a single 3" medallion chicken with no sides for $30), overcooked, dry, and tasteless. Everything needed seasoning. And it was very expensive. We spent about $80 per person (before tip). The only decent parts of the meal were the Brussel sprouts and seasonal vegetables. My husband and I did a road trip around CO for our honeymoon. We needed a break from sleeping in our van so we walked into the Strater once in Durango just to take a look. We were instantly in love. This very old hotel made you feel like you were stepping back in time. It was very clean and extremely charming. So much to look at and do in the hotel itself. Ricky at the front desk was so kind and helpful. He heard it was our honeymoon and hooked us up with a suite. Our room was super cool with old wood furniture and fixtures but still clean and inviting. They have hot tub rooms you can reserve and we loved that. It's cleaned between guests and very intimate. The hot tub room also has a shower so you can rinse off before hand and after (they provide towels). We booked it for an hour but it's a hot tub so only needed about 30min. This is a must do! There is a cute area with art from a local that we fell in love with. We bought a beautifully designed journal so we can detail and remember our trip. The hotel has several bars and restaurants in it. We didn't get to go into the Diamond Belle but they had a live jazz pianist that was amazing. I felt like we had just boarded the titanic. We did get steaks and drinks at The Office which was very cool. Great selections and atmosphere. The servers were dress to the time and the live music there too was great. We loved everything about the hotel and want to come back for sure. Amazing location so you can walk to all the shops. Your right in the heart of Durango. We love The Strater!! read more

The hotel was beautiful. My aunt and I recently vacationed around Colorado and we had a 2 night stay here in Durango. The rooms were clean and beautiful. Service for the hotel was very helpful and friendly. My only complaint is the restaurant attached. Breakfast service was really good but dinner was lacking. I will leave a separate review for the restaurant but I would suggest dining elsewhere for dinner. read more

This is a historic hotel that we were anxious to experience. We were in the area for two nights. They did not have availability the first night so we stayed in the local Best Western. We spent the second night here. Not only was the Best Western much cheaper, it had far better amenities, room, and service, then the Strater Hotel. Enjoyed the stay and respected the history. However, without my knowledge or authorization added $18.49 to the bill for each room we rented. We had prepaid the rooms and tax (22.40% taxes). The explanation was an increase in the tax rate from 10.04% to 13.65% after we booked the rooms but before we stayed. Since the math doesn't work, they said..uh, must be resort fee then. We stayed last night in an updated room on the second floor. When we went to bed we noticed blood on the sheets and comforter. I should have called housekeeping immediately and made them replace all bedding but it was late and we were tired. Didn't sleep well. Told the manager this morning and she made believe it was us who soiled the bedding. I would not stay at this here! read more

So disappointing. We decided to.splurge and stay there for our mini vacation to ride the train. During this covid time it made sense to stay at a.place that also had restaurants in one place. History is always fun. However. .when we checked in, we were told all restaurants were closed on site. Nothing was sent to us to.prewarn or posted anywhere. I knew we would find a place to eat, though disappointing. But on our return to at least see this historic building. Everything was locked up, and the ones that were not had private events. Lovely, charming, authentic, clean. If you're travelling to Durango and want to experience the real deal, this is the place to stay. You'll get old fashioned, friendly customer service--always with a smile and some energy--and you'll likely make friends with some of the other guests. There's loads to see and do along Main Street and even more within a block. Parking for the hotel is convenient, close and safe. A couple standouts from my last visit..I stayed in one of the suites. Very comfortable!. My car's alarm was going off due to a snafu with the security system; I was unaware, and the staff called my cell to notify me. That effort saved me a big headache! The bones of the building are great, and common areas are nicely refurbished. Rooms have some period furnishings but otherwise could be from a higher end motel in Anywhere, USA. We are definitely fans of the Strater If you look at this place in a vacuum, it is not going to rate that highly, as it is over 100 years old, but it is DRIPPY in character. Along with the train, it is the center of historical Durango. We have stayed here a few times and have love it each time. No, the rooms aren't huge, but they are classic. You don't go to a town like Durango and expect to walk into Tomorrow land at Disney, this is Frontier land, in fact they actually have a week in the summer call Frontier days. The Hotel has great views, a great staff, and is in the best location in Durango, right in the heart of downtown with great places to eat and party. And if you are in town to ride the train, it is a block and a half away. Next time you are there, ask a staff member to show you some of the Strater secrets. read more

Wow! What a fun hotel to stay in! And you can't beat the location if you want to be in historic Durango. Nicely furnished rooms - if you are expecting cookie cutter rooms you will be sorely disappointed. Each is uniquely furnished with antiques. Yes, the rooms are small, but this is a historic hotel! Yes the bathrooms are small, but they served their purpose and when was the last time you had a huge medicine cabinet in a hotel room? Beautifully decorated lobby and friendly staff. There are a couple of bars to quench your thirst and a very nice restaurant if you don't want to venture out. Breakfast was included and the posole was so good! They'll give you the recipe if you want. I do wish they had some breakfast meats, and there were a few days when they were slow refilling the offerings. But that said, there was quite a bit to choose from and none of us left hungry. Durango has some great shopping and people watching, and being able to stay right downtown beats driving in everyday from a hotel further afield. We had a great experience and highly recommend this hotel when visiting Durango. read more

This historic hotel was so much fun to stay in! The rooms all have names and are so individually decorated. The lobby has old fashioned phone booths and a saloon type bar. But, the check in procedure is very inconvenient. Not knowing where to park was the first hurdle. Then we had to carry our luggage up four steps and hold open the heavy door to get into the lobby. (I asked about handicapped options and was told, "we can put out a ramp" if needed.) Having an electronic door would have been the least they could do for an able-bodied person trying to get their luggage in the door. Parking was provided, but it was 2 blocks away in an ungated area. The breakfast, which was delicious, service was painfully slow, which is unacceptable in a tourist town where the staff should know that we don't want to waste our time sitting at breakfast, but rather go out and enjoy the main street. read more

Loved our experience at the Strater! It's on the main street, 4 blocks from the train depot, and has its own private parking lot which is very convenient. Its rooms are adorable - antique furniture, old style decorating... you feel like you've stepped back in time! The staff are very friendly and eager to help. The breakfast in the morning is comprehensive and delicious! Be forewarned that the elevator is tiny and takes forever, and even the exterior doors are awfully small and difficult to get large suitcases through. But, that's a small detail, and not enough to ruin the great experience here! The hotel is a little expensive, but in the tourist town of Durango, it's certainly worth the difference between the price of that and the comfort inn... if you've got the budget, go for the added charm and the proximity to all of the allure of historic Durango! read more

I love historic hotels, and this was as good as any I've stayed in. We went in the off-season, (just before the busy season started), and got an incredible deal on a room. We only had the basic room, but found it to be plenty big enough, plenty comfortable enough, and plenty close to just about everything you would want to do in Durango. The hotel is just minutes from the highway, and a short drive to the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings. Also, it is two blocks away from the Durango and Silverton Railroad. As for dining, there are three places to dine right in the hotel, and all are good. One is upscale, but the other two are not, and both hove good food, and drinks at good prices. I especially liked the happy hour deals with things like 12" pizzas for $5.50, and an assortment of cocktails for $5.00. Great service, too. If the dining at the hotel doesn't suit you, there are lots of other choices easily within walking distance, like my favorite, the "Fired Up" pizzeria with excellent, wood-fired pizza, or "Sushitarian" with sushi and Japanese so good, you'll forget you're in a mountain town. There are some important, other things, too, that, for some reason, isn't on the hotel website, and they don't tell potential guests about. One is plenty of "free," nearby parking. We parked our car, and never moved it the entire time we were there. Another forgotten item is the "complimentary" breakfast buffet at the Mahogany Grille right in the hotel. It's a great buffet that is normally $10, (and well worth it), but was included in the price of our room. On the buffet, they had Posole, hash browns, link sausages, scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs with cheese and green chile, instant cereal, cold cereal, fruit cocktail, yogurt, and assorted sweet rolls and breads. Coffee, tea, and juice are included as well. What's really nice about this buffet is you eat in an actual restaurant, (as much as you want), instead of in a commons area. The historic hotel, itself, is beautiful, with great history, (Louis L'amour wrote a number of his stories in Room 222). I loved the woodwork, the decorations, and the various antiques located all about the hotel, even in the rooms. The rooms are decorated with antique furniture, even the beds. I love that. I don't know about the busy season, but, in the off season, the prices are great. The location is always great, (right near the highway, the Animas River, and the train depot), and there are a surprising number of activities to interest anyone, even if it's just bar hopping. We found three bars right near the hotel that were great, filled with friendly people, and had good happy hour offerings, including food. The three were "Joel's," "The Irish Pub," and "El Rancho." At "Joel's," the bartender was very friendly, and the locals were fun to talk to. At "The Irish Pub," it was nicely decorated, and, again, filled with locals. At "El Rancho," we got two, great Bloody Mary's, made exactly as we ordered, for just $6.00 each. I'm sorry this hotel is kind of a long drive for us. If it weren't, we'd be going to Durango more often. But, if you happen to be in the neighborhood, or you are planning a trip to the area, take the time to stop into Durango, and stay at the Strater. There are no ghosts at the Strater. But it is a good yarn. Having stayed at the top floor, where a lot of the paranormal activity is supposed to go on, I can say it can feel a little strange. It's got a really old feel and things are at a smaller scale as per the era of its construction. The elevator is charmingly old. This probably explains why it goes to floors where no one is or decides to stop at all the floors. The old lady I happened to be in the elevator insisted it was a "ghost rider." Breakfast is great. Huge selection. Room service was prompt and when they messed up my order they fixed it right away. My room overlooked the mountains and the train, of which I got to see come in all day. Even the front desk staff, who really weren't that nice and made me wait to check in despite them not being busy, couldn't deflect me from going back. Really loved it. read more

It has location, reputation and I believe that it is a National Historical Landmark BUT it should become a cemetery!! We were driving from Cortez, CO to Pagosa Springs, CO and were approaching Durango around 2 pm on May 15th. We had a brochure for the place, so I called to see if they served lunch at this time-of-day. No answer. We decided to go off Rt 160 and work our way toward it and a young man at the front desk answered my second call. He told me they served lunch in one of their rooms all afternoon, but that their main dining room would not be open until 4 pm -- no problem for us, we'd try the non-main room. He told us where to park as well. Great. Of course, he gave us the wrong directions and sent us to the wrong area to park. We eventually paid to park and walked to the hotel and entered the main lobby, to look around and ask where they were serving lunch. We were ignored by all of the front-desk staff. We looked around the first floor without assistance, used the restrooms and eventually found the "saloon" in the corner of the ground floor, which we passed on the outside, ironically. My wife and I grabbed 2 menus, but were soon shown to a table in the middle of the area, next to a modest-size group of men who were finishing up lunch. One of the "waitresses" comes up to us to tell us that they are no longer serving lunch and that we would need to wait until 4 pm for the main room, or about 30 minutes before we could have "bar-food" where we sat. We decided to leave, since we were already very hungry and upset about the continuous misinformation provided by the front desk individual over the phone. We walked outside to look for an alternative place to eat and I realized I left my new-for-the-trip, large-brim hat inside. So, 1 minute later, I walked back inside and it was gone -- magically, 20 or more people didn't see it "disappear". All the men that were sitting there were also gone, back into the main lobby area. So, I followed that path back to the front desk. When I approached all staff members (in the saloon or at the front desk) available, no one remembered me (1 minute??) and the lead staff front-desk person asked me if I was sure if I had a hat on when arrived at the hotel. I responded by asking her, "was I taking a shower in your lobby?". She said, "No." I said, "then, I was wearing a hat!! We went back to this place several times that afternoon and the following day, but were treated like lepers each time. Not a single staff person cared or showed any interest in us at any time. I thought it was a hanging offense out-west to steal a man's horse -- I would have thought it was the same for stealing a man's hat (and protecting those that do). read more

Very disappointing hotel rooms. Two people can hardly fit around the bed. Shower was tiny with shower head hitting chest high. TV didn't work. View of a mess out the windows, elevator broken so needed to carry suitcases upstairs. All this for over $225 plus other charges. Look elsewhere. read more

What a gorgeous building. Built-in 1882 the history is impeccable. The carving of some of the would, the furniture, just simply the atmosphere was a sight to be seen. If I had the trip to do over again I would have stayed at this hotel. Unfortunately, I did not stay here however we did go in and have a drink in the bar called the office that is attached to the hotel. That had all kinds of old furniture a fireplace to different levels a small bar being run by one bartender and 1 waitress. I ordered a lemon drop which was fresh squeezed lemon which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately the 1st 1 they brought me was rimmed with salt instead of sugar they profusely apologized and then brought me 1 rimmed with sugar. I have to say it was absolutely delicious and I really enjoyed sitting amongst all of that history. Next time I'm in town I definitely wanna eat in the restaurant and as I said before stay in the hotel. If you are a history buff or love old architecture a highly recommend checking out this hotel. read more

When I walked into this hotel I think I audibly gasped. It's beautiful and charming. The staff are all nice and helpful. The room was comfortably modern, while still retaining antique elements. It's in a fun area with lots to walk to. Only downside is the parking lot was oddly small (maybe there is more elsewhere?) and it isn't obvious how to get to it. But anyway... Booked our family for a special occasion four months in advance. Total of 6 rooms in the hotel. Made it clear we wanted rooms to be near each other and told we would be accommodated to be near senior family member. Stayed first night in hotel quite happily. Key card issues for us from the first moment of arrival, but we found the rooms as promised next to each other and across the hall. -Returned following afternoon after train trip to find our reservation of 4 months negated and that all our belongings were moved to another room far from our previous night's room for no apparent reason. We were blamed for not noting the room number properly in card envelope the evening prior. We showed that this was not accurate and we were in the room as previously promised near family. They moved no one else in our reservation, just us and WE MADE THE RESERVATION in the first place based on proximity to each other. They simply gave our room away to someone else and moved us out against our wishes, request and in spite of our long-standing reservation making a special 80th birthday celebration a disappointing and stressful event. - We ended up moved from our king bed room overlooking street to much smaller room overlooking dilapidated roof. HUGE step down, but certainly not in price. Offered comp but our beautiful room was STOLEN OUT FROM UNDER US and no more rooms very near our family remained. We ended up down-grading bed size to remain in proximity. Real let-down from where we slept the night before. - This is AFTER we spent HUNDREDS of dollars with our large party dining in the hotel restaurant with courses including appetizers, entrees, spirits and even desserts. Our patronage meant NOTHING. We no longer dined there after this forced re-location. - Parking is a fair distance to bring luggage. Valet service was not offered and is a burden on elderly or special needs individuals. You will be told "Well, we have an elevator." The elevator is too small to easily deal with multiple guests or their bags effectively. - Asked for a safe way to dispose of used insulin injection needles! Told to simply drop into trash!! Grossly unacceptable. - Management felt we were too "unforgiving" for questioning why we were moved after already sleeping in a room and then being forcibly removed for their mistake. Unlike them, I am forgiving, but also brutally honest. They gave our room away in spite of our being there first and comfortably settled near our family as promised. All the comping in the world doesn't fix our disappointment and how poorly it was handled. - The Final Straw? After we settled in to our "new" room and return from dinner out, management knocks on door to tell us neighbor hears "water running or pouring" in our walls and they need to check our room. An olde timey hotel from the Victorian Era updated (somewhat) for modern times. It was great in a few respects: *Right in the heart of cute downtown Durango *Close to the train station for an early morning steam engine trip to Silverton *Friendly employees *Cabinets full of fun antique-y things to look at in the lobby *There's a room diary where you can write about your time at the Strater and read about previous guest experiences (kinda cool... but do I really want to know who has been sleeping in a strange bed before me? I'm not sure.) It was just OK in other respects: *Rooms were slightly cramped (cool furniture though) *Bathrooms were small and plain *Shower (no tub here) was minuscule (though I suppose in the days of yore there were no private bathrooms)! Had visited the Strater (bars, restaurant & lobby) many times over the years, but never actually over-nighted until last this weekend. We had a very nice stay. The Strater is classy, well-appointed hotel. Yes the rooms are a bit small, but we don't entertain in our room. That's what the public area are for. Service - 5 (everyone really went out of their way to be helpful and friendly) Room - 4 (need a better more up-to-date TV. Our was quite tiny) Conference facilities - 4 (ceiling a bit low, but great service again) Food - 4 (included breakfast, lunches & snacks were basic, but quite acceptable) Parking - 4 (tight around the building, but many reserved lots for guests with a block) With a super location and great service, we would stay there again. read more

I tried the Strater on a recent visit to the area. While the hotel was comfortable, it is seriously over-priced for the accomodations available. Additionally, when seeking a suite or suite like accomodations - as I was - be clear, they have NOTHING of the sort available. Even if the reservation staff leads you to believe there is. I regularly travel to NY and San Fransisco, where I expect to pay $250 and up for a NICE room. I paid more than that for a typical two bed hotel room at the Strater - this even though I asked for and was led to believe I was receiving a suite- and was told this is what they call premium accomodations at the hotel. When I went to speak with the front desk staff about my displeasure with the accomodations on a Saturday evening), they informed me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to speak with Bill, the front desk services manager on Monday when he returned to work. When I spoke with Bill, he told me there was nothing he could do since I "consumed" the room. What is one to do when no one is empowered to correct the situation when it occurs. I recommend being weary of what you are told by the Strater staff and making sure you clearly understand what you are paying for. In my case I failed to do so and paid a heavy ($300+ per night) price. read more

A stay at the Strater, coupled with a day spent on Durnago and Silverton Narrow Gauge RR, is probably as close to a time machine as we will see. In fact, if you have any late 19th century garb, bring your duds, too. You have to take this hotel for what it is -- a turn-of-the century (no, the previous one) hotel maintained "as it was." Yes, the rooms are small, the showers narrow, and the TV is small, too, but in my opinion the TV shouldn't have even been there! My wife told me to knock it down a star because the room was stuffy -- but that's what windows are for! Additionally, I felt all of the staff went out of their way to make sure I had a pleasant stay. Just remember, you're going to get an 8:30 wake up call whether you like it or not (that's when the train rolls right behind the hotel). read more

Had a great stay at the Strater Hotel in Durango. They gave a good military rate and had enough parking nearby (across the street). Old and unique rooms, way more fun than a chain hotel. They had a full breakfast and an enjoyable historic feel that wasn't worn or tired. If I get the opportunity to visit Durango again (I'd love to!), I would definitely stay here again. read more

This place is incredible. We loved the Victorian charm. Our room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable and sheets were soft. We had dinner at Mahogany. I had elk for the first time, it was magical. It was cooked perfectly. It was juicy, tender and flavorful. I went to culinary school and couldn't have done it any better. We both are foodies and had a great experience. We stopped by The office after dinner. They had live music that wasn't too loud for conversation. We loved the charming balcony in addition to the Victorian charm already present. The service was very good in both venues. We absolutely recommend this hotel! read more

Behind the cute antiques is a hotel in need of an upgrade and better staff. The room: To start our mattress was a horrible basic innerspring that was impossible to sleep on. It jiggled around and creaked with every movement. If you have sleep issues, I advice not sleeping here. Secondly, our thermostat was "locked" and we could not cool the room down. The only redeemable thing about our room was a large bathroom, but the towels were scratchy and the shower was weak. You can hear EVERYTHING through the paper thin walls. So... beware. Another gross thing was that our sheets smelled really bad when we first tried to go to bed. Like seriously wrong smelling. There were small hairs on the sheet and it was completely unacceptable. The service: The staff is mainly a bunch of young kids that don't care at all about customer service. Don't get the "breakfast included" deal with the room. It only counts for a basic breakfast of eggs, hash browns, and pork link. If you choose to order something else, they will take away your free coffee and up charge you for everything. We had our vouchers and they still tried to charge us $3 per meal and $2.50 per coffee (even though it says the standard breakfast AND coffee is included). We had to ask our server 3 times to fix the bill and we still ended up paying for coffees and up charges. The manager at the front desk was able to correct this, but it was embarrassing having to fight over pennies with the rude breakfast manager. Our waiter was annoyed and let us know it. Customer service is seriously lacking in the restaurant. The final straw was being woken up with a loud knock at 7:45am by room service for no apparent reason. The manager at the front desk apologized and tried to make the weird wake up call alright by taking some money off our bill. We are appreciative of that, but wish we would have just stayed somewhere else on our trip. No sleep due to old beds and uncomfortable accommodations stink. read more

This hotel exuded nothing but historic charm and genuine hospitality. The people that work here are some of the kindest and most accommodating peeps you'll come across. We extended our stay by one night and it was a seamless transition to swap rooms based on availability. We were supposed to get married Friday (8/28) but due to covid we postponed. The hotel (thanks to my mom calling ) gifted us with some BALLING bread pudding and room service champagne. It truly felt like a home away from home in a historic setting. If you're looking for a modernized hotel with lavish amenities and electronics....don't come to Durango, you're clearly not ready for the SW Colorado vibe. But if you're looking to take a deep breath, slow down your pace, learn about some really neat USA history and meet some really dope people...then this is your place. This is a wonderfully historic hotel located in Durango. I stayed here for a few nights on work and I'm not entirely sure I'll return. It's exactly what you'd expect from a historic hotel. Old furniture, creaky floors, nice staff, and potentially haunted. I can appreciate the history and I think how they keep things historically appropriate, however, I am not sure I can do the lumpy beds, funky smell, and slanted creaky floors. You have to acknowledge that this is a beautiful historic hotel with all the fine luxuries of the past, and for me, I am not the most into it. read more
