Nice enough, old-fashioned Western frontier feel to the interior and room. Comfortable king bed, functional 1950s-style bathroom. Free WiFi, which worked well. Helpful staff. Convenient location for checking out the south end of Durango, close to the narrow-gauge-train station and lots of restaurants (and, my wife would insist, shopping). The hotel's restaurants are excellent, however, we used them rather a lot. Don't know anything about the ghost stories, but heard lots of footsteps from the visitors in the room over ours one night. This hotel is a nice break from the run-of-the-mill chain hotels. We booked directly on the internet, which gave us a nightly breakdown of the rates, which varied every night. read more

We are current guests at this "hotel", and I'm writing this review at 2AM since it's impossible to sleep. We went to bed with the thermostat set to 68. Woke up sweltering at 1:30am, the room is 89 degrees! The thermostat is still set to "cool" at 68 degrees. Called the front desk and was told that the heater automatically turns on at midnight, and the only solution was to set the thermostat to 90 so the heater would turn off, then open a window. We were his first call tonight, but he had several last night. This is ridiculous. They have a charming building, but surprising the guests by turning the rooms into hell at midnight is worthy of every zero review I can give. Please do not stay here, we certainly never will again. read more

Very nice historic hotel restaurant. Great place for casual dining after shopping in downtown Durango. Southwest grilled chicken black bean corn salsa salad with chipotle vinaigrette yummy. read more

LOVE this adorable hotel! The old-timey feel, friendliness of the staff, simplicity of the rooms, and good price are really great! They have little notebooks for each of the guests to write about their stay in each room. We had two rooms, so it was fun to read other's experiences (some HILARIOUS "ghost stories"), and then add our own. Will stay here again whenever I'm in Durango. read more

Great old, beautiful hotel. The bar is superb, and an actual proper bar. The drinks were spot on and the food very reasonably priced and tasty. Don't miss this gem. read more

We had a great time with our bartender Joel. This is a must see destination in Durango. Great music and company.

Wonderful old hotel with enough modern features to make it comfortable. We have one complaint and that is about the temperature in our room (117). It is seventy degrees even when the thermostat is set on 50. Maybe it's from the location in the hotel over the furnace room or something. We fixed the problem by opening the window. Since it was January and not snowing this made it comfortable for us. Would I stay again? Yes and I would suggest it to others that seek something outside the chain hotel. 4 stars because of the heat issue otherwise no complaints. We enjoyed the breakfast there each day. read more

We loved the Strater and historic Durango! A great little mountain town with good food and cold beer. The strater is a beautifully restored historic hotel with lush wallpaper and antique chairs galore! Our room was clean and cozy and the staff were wonderful and helpful. Parking felt safe and the saloon is amazing! If you're lucky enough to have Ashleigh as a bartender you're in for a treat as she was so friendly and fun to talk to. Top notch destination! read more

This is a beautiful historic hotel... my mistake was booking from Expedia. Book directly with hotel - you'll get a better room and possibly even a better rate. Next time I'm calling direct! read more

We walked up and down Main Street looking for a place to have a steak. So glad we ended up at the Strater! Four steaks, all great!

This is a must see in Durango. I cannot comment on the rooms, but the two bars and restaurant are great. The office is cozy with great bar staff and the Belle is fun and a throwback to the old west. Great mix of locals and visitors. read more

Nice clean, historic hotel on our stay in Durango (and right on the Main Street) on 9/7/2015 . The room was very quaint, clean and appeared to be recently updated. The TV did not work at first but was quickly rectified by their staff. Nice little breakfast in the am (if you chose to pay an extra $5 per person when checking in) but was well worth it! Nice to see they do take AAA. Sure do LOVE this little town and will definitely be back!!!! read more

Hugely disappointed! They don't mention when you book a room that a TRAIN blows past the hotel every 15 minutes! That's unacceptable for $230 s night! Plus/ this is the smallest room with the tiniest bathroom I've EVER SEEN! Don't bother! What a joke! read more

We have stayed here four times and this will be our last.they have set the thermostat at 70', which is fine for the day time, I prefer a cooler temperature to sleep. Asked three times to get the thermostat unlocked however I'm apparently not smart enough to decide my room temperature. You can open the window ( the outside temperature being in the 20's to cool the room down then you get to listen to the snow ploys and other traffic. Makes for a irritating vacation when I can't sleep at night read more

If you're looking to truly experience the Old West of southwest Colorado, be centrally located in Durango, have great hotel bar and restaurant options, some romance, and just a great time for truly not an abundance in cost... go to the Strater Hotel... it's fantastic! When you walk in the front doors, it just feels like you've stepped back in time and get to experience the Victorian age of grace as well as the Old West mayhem! I love it there! read more

Loved it. So beautiful. My husband didn't like the room, but I did. I also though the front desk help could be more welcoming. Out of the 3-4 that we spoke with. I think only one smiled. But the breakfast is nice and the whole place is just beautiful. Hung out in the bar and the service was great. read more

The reason I cannot give 5 stars: lukewarm water, wimpy water pressure and super slow internet. But we LoVEd it!

When checking into this hotel they told us it would be $170 a night plus tax. When checking out the next morning we actually got charged almost $200. The employee was unwilling to help us out and have us walk away happy. Instead we left unhappy and frustrated. So be sure to get confirmation on amount being charged or book room online instead of in person. read more

My name is Traci Tayler and we stayed in room 222. When we checked in we were told their would be piano music playing in the saloon below till 11 pm but we wouldn't be able to hear it. This was true. However, its midnight and your bartenders have the music blaring. We called the front desk and were basically told too bad. It would be over whenever the bartenders decided it was over. We want our damn money back!!!! We were lied to and even worse we cannot sleep. This has been the worst hotel ever! read more

Stopped in on a family road trip and had the best lunch! Servers Grant and Nick were friendly and efficient. Salads were fresh and delicious. Everything was a 5-star rating! If you are in Durango stop here for a great dining experience and a step back in time to the good ol' days! read more

Excellence with history....loved the old charm of this grand hotel. Service was wonderful and room was very clean. Great location. We asked for room 303 as this is supposedly one of the haunted rooms....unfortunately no spirits visited us in the night, but we truly enjoyed checking out the hotel. Great hotel to take the family and enjoy the steam engine train right outside. Great getaway - very pleased. read more

This will be my third night at the Strater and I'm not looking forward to tonight. The rooms are hot and smell funky. Constant door slamming happens nonstop and I can hear my neighbor move her bowels. To top it off I have yet to see a single ghost. I won't be back to this dump unless it's to drink cheap booze. read more

For the price, I would pick the Best Western Rio Grande 3 blocks away (There's 2 BW's in town, FYI). Sure, the Strater has a good location, and has some old-world charm, but that's about where it ends. Our room was old, but not old-world. It looked like the remodel job was done in the late 70's with some veneer paneling that was supposed to look authentic. That same theme stuck out across a lot of what I saw. Really old cool charm, ruined by later remodeling. The bed was TERRIBLE. So worn that even sleeping all the way at the edges, it would roll us into the center because it was so soft. On the day of check out, housekeeping opened our door before checkout time without knocking. I was standing behind it, and closed it on them, told them we were not out of the room. They came back in 5 minutes and did the exact same thing again! At the front desk on checkout they didn't ask us how our stay was, and when we told them about the housekeeping incident they didn't apologize, just said that "someone" had checked us out already for that day. The rest of our trip we stayed at the Best Western which admittedly has less charm, but much larger rooms with better beds, a pool and a hot tub, 2 free drinks per night per person and breakfast, a cheaper price and is only 3 more blocks to walk to downtown. Do yourself a favor - stay somewhere else, and stop by the Strater for sightseeing. read more

Do not recommend. Clean, lovely, but outrageously noisy due to some kind of very loud grinding reverberating machine. The whole room vibrated. Called front desk and was offered ear plugs. The noise was part of the problem. The vibration was the major issue. Not from any typical kind of mechanical source like a fan or air conditioner. Someone else complained about the wallpaper...at least it doesn't make noise! read more

Had a wonderful time at the Strater Hotel. Very cool historic hotel in the center of downtown Durango. When my wife made the online reservation I added, in the special requests section, that I needed a picture of Patrick Swayze in the room. They called about a week later to see if the request was "critical to our stay"! My embarrassed wife stated no and told them her husband was an idiot. You know what was waiting in the room, right? Not one but two pictures of Patrick Swayze! For that alone, I wholeheartedly recommend the Strater Hotel! Ask them for the Patrick Swayze room when you call! read more

Awesome staff, great location, but when spending this much $$$, at least have a decent bed in the room! Room 411 had a simply awful bed. I get the whole authentic wild west schtick, but at least put decent queen size beds in the rooms. I book hotels to SLEEP in a bed, not soak up the atmosphere. read more

No! Furniture in the room was so beaten up. Lots of nicks and pulls broken. Inside the drawers were dirty! Bedspread was dirty. Front doorman didn't know where to park. No area to pull car up to check in. It is just a no! Plus the town has so many vagrants it is scary to walk on the Main Street. read more

What a fabulous historic hotel. It is truly first class in every respect. Even though it is old and historic, the owners have obviously poured a fortune into maintaining the ambience in every detail. The staff was extremely accommodating and thoughtful and our room was truly first class. The location is very near the Durango & Silverado RR station and all the beautiful high quality shops, stores and restaurants. This is the third time we have stayed there. read more

Considering the age of the hotel, it's nice but not worth the rate of over $200 per night. Having worked in hospitality at a four star and staying at plenty of three & four star hotels, this one did not meet the mark. Being an old hotel I expected a small room, which it was. There was no mini bar, no big deal. What caught my eye was the dark entry/hall leading to our room due to burned out bulb. Some of the walls in the room were dirty. The cable shut off. ?? The old furniture is charming but could use a good cleaning and polish. The carpet needs replacing. What I can say is the staff was friendly and I felt safe. Would I come back? Perhaps. Just not for what I paid. read more

We are scheduled to stay for 3 nights but we may cut our vacation short. The room is tiny, smaller than we had in Venice, Italy. The outlets are so loose we can only use two. The bathroom is abysmal and smells like sulfur. Pretty disappointed and we are used to small hotel rooms. read more

The Strater is delightful. Lovely room, helpful staff, comfy bed, pet-friendly. Nice small bar with very good acoustic music and fun local clientele. The continental breakfast was excellent, with delicious (but very salty) posole. The only jarring note was that the the spoons were plastic. When I commented on that, the staff cheerfully provided me with a metal spoon, explaining that too many spoons had been disappearing. read more

if you only go to tour the common areas of the hotel - do! we were invited, by the front desk, to look around. room after room of wonderfully restored victorian architecture. the wallpaper is amazing! we had already booked at another hotel but would have stayed here had we seen it before. read more

The place is like an old relative-- it has a lot of interesting quirks and style and history (and appealing charisma and laughs) but it hasn't updated itself in a way that would be pleasurable to all travelers. The bed was super tiny but cute-- we kept bumping our heads on the bed frame. The breakfast was great and free! The saloon was fun and lively and the food solid there. Would recommend overall but with some reservations-- like sleeping at a rich grandmother's house. If you love cowboys or history, you'd love the lobby too. read more

Wonderful hotel. The decor and period Furniture were as expected. Much care was taken by staff to give it an old Western feeling. To top it all off it was a very reasonable rate for this quality of hotel. I would probably recommend this to friends and/or family. read more

Got snowed in while trying to drop daughter for flight at Durango Airport. Called "Eddie" at Strater who fixed us up. Room was FABULOUS, a trip back to the 1800's with period wallpaper, etc., but with modern amenities. We LOVED it! Also loved our evening meal at the hotel's Diamond Belle Saloon, & the FABULOUS breakfast at the hotel's Mahogany Grill next morning. Service was terrific at every turn; we were treated like royalty. Getting snowed in turned out to be a blessing! read more

Beautiful, clean, and historic, this place is a wonderful experience. The rooms are obviously recently remodeled, but no complaints from me. Beautiful tile shower, just the wallpaper job in our second floor room was worth the price of admission. Lovely employees really contribute to a nice stay. read more

This was a return visit for us. We had stayed at the Strater 18 years ago and had fond recollection of it. This visit we had a fantastic room on 4th floor with great view of train coming and going, loved it! Beautifully decorated, queen and twin beds in room with lovely old furniture, nice bathroom with tub, not a mini bar but basket replenished with chocolates, snacks. Ordered room service and had a great cheese and fruit platter we enjoyed. Fantastic breakfast each morning. Beautiful lobby and bar. Conveniently located. read more

Emily Spencer and her Catering and Events team put on a great a party for our much anticipated wedding at the Historic Strater Hotel. From the moment we met her, we knew we were in her capable hands, and a huge portion of wedding planning was handed over to her. Emily is flexible, engaging, easy to work with, and FUN! She has a curious mind and during one of our meetings she helped us uncover all of our needs and expectations so that we were prepared weeks before the big day. She anticipated everything that we needed from the "ready-room" to a dancefloor and even a cocktail 40 minutes before the ceremony! Because we asked, Emily was able to grant us access to areas of the hotel that are seldom seen by the general public for our dream wedding photo shoot. The reception itself was delivered in such a flawless execution that every one of our guests told us that the food was delicious and they very much enjoyed our celebration of love! Emily kept our party moving in perfect timing, from cocktails to dinner to cake then dancing...our big day was so fun we didn't want the night to end! But when it did, we stayed in the Honeymoon Suite overlooking Main Street Durango in a room styled in Victorian luxury. Thank you to all the event staff and a HUGE THANK YOU to Emily Spencer for hosting us on one of our greatest days in life! We feel as though we have become part of the Strater's history, and the Strater has become a part of our history! read more

This is a great old Victorian hotel in Durango. Nice comfy rooms. A great old bar with a fabulous piano player and lots of friendly people. Good breakfast too. Supposed to be haunted but unfortunately I didn't see any ghosts.... read more

I have stayed here many times over the years. Love the hotel And love the atmosphere. However today, I am supposed to check out at 11 AM, but asked for an extended period to stay, and was granted noon. At 9:30 this morning our toilet completely backed up, Followed by the bathtub with yellow water and metal specs in it. I was ilynable to use the bathroom all morning, use your imagination, and was unable to take a shower. I asked for more time as I have not eaten yet this morning. We were waiting on plumbers and other repair men. They just finished and it is 11:10 AM, so I called to the front desk and asked if I could get a little more time as I would like to go eat lunch and then come back and shower. The problem was with the room next-door, not our room, therefore not our fault. We were told we could get a $25 discount on the room or I could go take a shower in the Jacuzzi room. Seriously? I paid for a room with a shower and a toilet and have not been able to use it and it is now after 11. Wow. I was told the pipes are very old and this happens, so beware. read more
