FOLKS, WE'RE GETTING RIPPED OFF BY THE NEW OWNERS. They came in and made all of these supposedly "great" changes. They have price tags that say "You save" X amOunt of dollars. The "regular" prices on MANY of the itmes are NOT the "regular" price. They're jacked up, to make it look like you're getting a deal. They want us to think we're getting a deal. It's a total joke. They're slowly and very methodically raising prices, hoping we won't notice. I've HAD it with their BS. My wife went there today, May 8th and lettuce, NOT organic lettuce, but REGULAR lettuce was almost $4.00 a head. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? $4 A HEAD!! It seems as though all of their prices are going up. Yes, they run sales but many of the sales aren't really "sales." They're playing a psychological game with all of us, all the while raping us with higher prices. This is the closest grocery store to my home, so I go there when I need just a couple items, from now on I'm heading to Meijer or Aldi. I claim partial responsibility for accidentally purchasing the moldy cherry tomatoes because I should have examined them carefully, because I've been burned SO many times with bad produce at Stracks. Their prices have risen to where I think they are more expensive than Jewel. The store itself is laid out very nice and seems to be relatively clean. My only issue is with the lighting it gets darker in there every time. Maybe they don't want us to see the moldy produce ???? read more

If you are looking for beautiful floral arrangements or bouquets & or Boutonnières look no further! Seriously, Tracey is amazing. One of my daughters friends ordered flowers from a local floral shop & when she got the bouquet home she noticed the flowers were in horrible condition and some of the flowers looked brown & wilted. They closed early & weren't about to help. I took them to Stracks on calumet for her, while she was getting her hair done. Even though Tracey had a full day due to Valparaiso's homecoming, she asked us to come back in a half an hour and promised to fix them. She did more than that! They looked absolutely beautiful she refreshed them, rearrange them and even added some gold accents! The bouquet was truly beautiful! And she honestly saved the day! read more

Home of the moldy fruits & vegetables, and now they are complete mask Nazis too. The state of Indiana has lifted the mask requirements, but not SVT. NOPE! One of the managers was aggressively stalking customers throughout the store, not respecting six feet of personal space while demanding they wear a mask. It's absurd, and it's harassment. There were already so many reasons not to shop there, like high prices, outdated food, mold on fruits and vegetables, and now harassing customers over masks. We visit Strack much more than when this was a Wiseway. Although the prices are still generally higher than Town & Country, the deals seem to have improved. We grab meats and produce mostly here and occasionally other things we like on sale. Watch the ads to get the best deals here. If they would lower their daily prices we would shop here more. But because of the higher prices on food that is the same as anywhere else I just don't feel like I can give over 3 stars. read more

Wow. I left back when it was Wiseway and hadn't been in the store since the remodel and buy out and this is one beautiful grocery store. It's one of the nicest ones I've ever been in, and I'm sure my teenage self that started at the original store 11 years ago would be super jealous of what they've morphed it into. It was nice to see a few friendly faces that are still there now, and the store is well kept and clean. I'd recommend shopping here if you're in the area. Strack & Van Til is a wonderful place, especially for produce. The majority of things I get there are fresh and I especially love their large organic sections. They have a great sushi bar as well. Some of the cashiers and especially some of the deli workers, don't seem to like their job, but that doesn't affect my thoughts on the food Stracks has to offer. When you can get someone in deli to help you, Stracks does offer wonderful options of bread and freshly sliced meats. read more

I feel like this post has been overdue but today finally got me to write it. I love to cook, and Valparaiso doesn't have a ton of grocery stores. I'm a fan of Aldi, however, it's not that close to me so I go to Stracks on occasion. More and more I find meat and produce that is expired or moldy and for a while I would just get the managers attention and let them know they have some poor stock on the shelf... not to mention overpriced. Well I noticed myself doing this more often than not. I found green mold on short ribs that was more than just a small spot. The vegetables many times are wilted and past ripe. I've come in the store and it smelled like fish, which isn't good if you smell fish... that generally means your seafood is spoiling. It should have little to no smell. And just to further prove that I've checked the case and it's had off color salmon, slimy shrimp, and more shockingly... withered up lobster tails. To the point where they had turned color, had dry spots, and had small spots all over them that resembled mold. And more I can't even think of. I almost always find mold in my fruit and yesterday my wife and I bought raspberries that are "on sale" which is still kind of expensive. We bought them anyway because they're her favorite. I tried checking the package for mold but when I came home and opened them, low and behold there was mold all over the center of them. So not only did I pay 6.00 for raspberries I also can't even eat them. If I wanted to waste money I'd go buy gas. I'm incredibly disappointed in your business and I hope the management team steps up to fix these issues, although I've been bringing it up for over a year now. I understand staffing is difficult as it is in all professions, but if you're going to put something on the shelf at least make sure it's good quality. I'd rather come to a store where there's fewer things on the shelf, but I know they're not going to give me e. Coli. At the rate this business is operating someone has to have gotten Ill. And for the people that may not recognize what good produce, meat, and seafood looks like.. this is a scam because they're overpaying for something that shouldn't even be sold. I implore the store manager to look into this because apparently it keeps falling through the cracks. read more

This stracks has by far the WORST deli I have ever experienced. We live a few minutes away, so unfortunately this is our go to for grocery shopping. Their deli is always busy but there never seems to be anyone actually working. There have been numerous occasions where I walk up, there are a few people in line, one person working the counter, and roughly 4-5 people just standing and talking, avoiding the counter. It is absolutely terrible. I worked at Town and Country's deli for 5 years a long time ago, so I know how a deli should be ran and customer priority. I guess Strack & Van Till is getting ready to it quits. I went there today - and did not where a mask - and when i went to check out - The girl behind the register said she was ordered not to serve anyone not wearing a mask. I explained that I don't wear one for medical reasons. Masks reduce oxygen intake thereby lowering your immune system. I was forced to go to the self serve check out - but I bought so many items (over 100 dollars)- it jammed up the system. I explained my situation - and she said they were just following orders. (same excuse the Nazis used). I used to be a regular at Strack &Van Til. But now they have orders they must follow - or get fired. (even though the mask mandate has ended). When it comes to stripping away a person's rights (not to have to wear a mask because it cuts off air supply) - the fine folks at Strack and Van Til are extremely efficient. read more

I love Stracks bakery items. They're my go to place for delicious and inexpensive sweet treats. I usually do all of my birthday cakes from there, and I always have to pick up at least two different types of the bakery goods when I'm shopping in the store. In my house, these items never last more than a day and a half. The girls in the bakery are very kind and helpful. 5 stars from me! read more

I just left and there were lines forming with 2 girls behind the service desk talking and my cashier didn't even acknowledge my existence. She handed me my receipt without even looking at me. I ordered a sheet cake for my daughter's bridal shower. It was absolutely beautiful. The decorator copied the flowers on the cake from our invitation perfectly. We received many compliments. The cake was not just pretty, it was also delicious, moist and flavorful. read more

This store is a clean store well kept. One problem that continues to be an issue here is the lack of cashiers in the evening. There is no reason why its 9:30 in the evening and barely anyone in the store but yet I'm in the cashier line for almost 30 minutes and the line is almost to the chip aisle. Maybe only having one line open and nobody else available isn't working obviously. As for the service at the cashier stations, it is not good. read more

Not bad considering the location in rural Indiana. I was impressed with the selection of vegan and organic products as well as the kombucha variety. Very happy they had organic vegan ice cream. The loose leaf tea was very expensive, which we did not realize until check out. The price seems reasonable per ounce but apparently an ounce of loose leaf tea isn't very much. Open late so we were able to grab our essentials well after 11pm. read more

Although I absolutely love this grocery store for its high quality selections, large organic section, and fresh salad/sushi bar... I rarely shop here due to the prices. They're pretty expensive and unfortunately Walmart and Aldis is cheaper. Other than that don't have a bad thing to say about them. They also give you 10 cents off your total PER reusable bag that you bring to use which is nice. Also the only place where there are still baggers that will bring your groceries out to your car for you. read more

The store is ok for the most part, but I just can't give it more than 2 stars because of the old merchandise they keep in stock. Do not buy milk or dairy products from them. They're always a week or so from expiration and they've often already gone bad (or will in a matter of days). The upgrade to this establishment is the best thing that Stracks could have done. The organic section and produce is wonderful. The only downfall is that the prices are about 10% higher than anywhere else. With that being said, when I visit Valpo, this is the store I will always choose! read more

The Floral department at the Valparaiso, Calumet location is absolutely to die for. The florist there is so knowledgeable and creative I can just go there and tell her to do whatever she wants to do and no matter what its for or where I have to take it everybody just goes crazy over the arrangements. I love this store. The associates are always kind, efficient and helpful. The produce is excellent. The beer and wine selection are wonderful. Their return policy is outstanding. When dealing with produce and perishables, you won't always have perfection. I recently bought something that was spoiled and moldy even though the expiration date hadn't been met. When I returned it I was refunded and still invited to take a new product with me at no charge. Excellent customer service. Thank you, Stracks! read more

This is one of three grocery stores (soon to be four) in our area. I used to shop here exclusively until I started checking my receipts against the prices advertised. On almost every visit, I would catch one or two errors in price, always to the benefit of the store. Once I was overcharged $5.00. Then I began shopping somewhere else. The unfortunate thing is, Stracks owns two of the larger supermarkets in town which go by different names. One of them was always less expensive than the other. I used to go to the other one because the prices were cheaper. Then over night the prices there, too, began to rise. I used to buy cat food there for $.50 a small can. IMagine my surprise going back 3 days later and finding it priced at $.65. My advice - buy only a few things at Stracks and make a note of how much they are. Watch the computer as you're being checked out. Town and Country is just as expensive as Stracks is. Go to Aldis to shop. Better prices and the same produce, plus a lot of organics. Then wait until Meijer opens. Better produce and better prices. And by the way, Valparaiso is hardly rural anymore. read more
