apathetic managers. often you will wait wait wait in line while only 1 or 2 cashiers are open..there are NO self serve registers so you have NO choice. when it gets crowded they cannot adjust to the traffic flow they'd rather stand around and chitchat. in addition they are ALWAYS moving product around the store, willy nilly. read more

When Cub foods left I was heartbroken. Strack is my new Love it takes some serious knowledge of food Price's are up by about 30 to 50 % over this time last year,but if you shop carefully, you can find some great deals.The butchers are great,answer questions, and direct you to good buys. Well this is week 4 my going in to purchase Edy's Outshine Strawberry frozen bars. Again nothing. I have talked to different managers, who where very polite, but said it was up to the supplier. Give me a break they fill in 6 different flavors but not strawberry. Or they just blow me off. The upshot is that I am not going to go from one grocery to another. So today I went back to Jewel and bought my usual 6 boxes of the Strawberry bars, and while I was there I finished my shopping. Do not pay attention to the remarks left by Lyle W as he was reviewing a Strack's in Downtown Hammond, not this one in Munster. This is a great store with clean floors (including the back room if you ask to take a peek), helpful employees and great cashiers. I find their prices are very in line and better than some other grocery stores around the area. Never shopped at the one in Downtown Hammond so can't comment on that store; but this one is great! read more

An unfortunate, over-priced and exploitative business, Strack's is a leach upon the open wounds of Lake County. They locate themselves in the low-income area of Downtown Hammond and charge prices that no one in the area can afford, and in addition their produce is always about to go bad. They lie, saying that they'll open up a new aisle if there's a long line, but there always is because they hardly hire new employees. And when they do, they pay them bottom-of-the-barrel wages and make them work absurd hours under even worse conditions. I'd stay away from this place. read more

Forget the bakery, I had to wait for someone to even acknowledge me, then it was like brain surgery trying to get what I wanted.

So bummed, I usually order fried chicken from Ultra (I know same company...) but I thought I would try Stracks...I called early in the AM for 24 pieces for that evening at 7... I have called Ultra before for 50 pieces with 2 hours notice...Stracks would NOT do it. Said they need 24 notice...it wasn't a holiday or anything... wouldn't even try. read more

Nice customer service, friendly staff and stock very well.I would give them 5 stars, however, they must send staff home too early because their lines are unbelievably long after 10 pm. Actually, it's usually only one line operating at that time even though they close at midnight. read more

I used to love this store! The new arrangement is awful. Why can't I go to one place and choose a brand hot dogs instead of them being on three different aisles? The same goes for other things such as bacon, sausage, etc. why isn't tomato sauce with the pasta sauce? It takes to much time to go from aisle to aisle because things are different brands or whatever. If it doesn't get better I will shop elsewhere. read more

Customer service is great, cashiers and most of the baggers are very polite. The produce and dairy are always fresh. Unlike other stores, I've never found expired items on the shelf (at least not since the remodel). The store is beautiful, I just wish the lighting was a bit brighter. Gross. They are trying to be whole foods but are not even almost whole foods Should change their name to almost whole foods., Moldy cheese. If you buy ANYTHING here check the freshness date as this store gets all the leftovers. The bakery is a mess, Not even the doughnuts are fresh. The people that work the deli counter are the slowest moving blobs I have ever seen. They like to talk more than work. The meat department is marginal at best. read more

Yeah, Lyle you are very wrong. The Hammond store is in about the best part of Hammond....I work at the Munster store and make $8.10 an hour plus tips and make about $5.00 an hour in tips on a weekday and $7.00 an hour in tips on the weekends. You have no clue what your talking about, every single one of my friends would DIE to work there, making $15.10 an hour on weekends half of it not taxed? Comon, this store is one of the best places in the region to work, and clearly the best to shop read more

no set time for cooking fish at the deli, poorly laid out, doors are in front center, check outs in corner. need exit facing west, long walk from side parking lot, tight walking trough store, 1 cart brocks walk way. poor store but close to the state line. long time shopper, old store was better. read more

This afternoon I was sincerely disappointed in my trip to the Munster Strack n' Van Til. I have been shopping on and off at this location for 4years now. Upon first entry to the store there was garbage flying all over the parking lot, not to mention the turned over plants and the disheveled look to the exterior displays. Along my way through the store I stopped in the freezer area to find the product I was about to purchase was completely thawed. I informed an employee in the meat department. After that I noticed there were more coolers/freezers down throughout the store. I wanted to purchase the advertised steak but the selection was poor and 40% was fat on the edges of the ribeye. Is this why it was on sale? After this I began to pay closer attention to what I was purchasing. I found that the larger packages of chicken legs were priced at $1.89lb., while the smaller packages of the same brand were at $1.29 lb. They obviously were marked wrong to get the best of someone. The pork chop variety pack has 1 center cut chop on top of 4 pork steaks, wheres the variety? I stuck to my list through the rest of the store and found no other problems after that. Except with check out. I have battled with the utility clerks here all 4 years I have shopped here. They are lousy. I have yet to be pleased with 1 bagger yet. I have been lucky to get to bag my own groceries when they are understaffed. Today they put the bananas in with the onions and the eggs were carelessly placed on their side crooked in a bag. Lucky they survived. In the past the baggers have done very poor work. This is why I travel out of my way to the Stracks in Schererville just to bag my own groceries. After 4 years I think I had my fill with this location. It's not even worth the 'convenience' anymore. read more
