It was very uncomfortable for staff to begin harassing my family because the clock striked 11. We actually came in before that. Deana G proceeded to ask me at the water fill up station if my container was the last one to fill. Would they have made me come back tomorrow if it wasn't?? She literally followed us down the aisle as we grabbed our last items. There were absolutely no messages given over the intercoms to inform about closing to properly prepare guests. I'm done with Strack's. While they have excellent people working in customer service, and they keep the checkout lines short, it's just not enough. When living in Crown Point, I would from time to time shop at Strack's. However, after purchasing moldy fruits and vegetables on several occasions, I gave up and started shopping at Jewel or Meijer. I recently moved to Lowell, and decided to try the Lowell Stracks. On my very first visit, I purchased blueberries and blackberries. When I got home and opened the blackberries, they were loaded with mold. Threw them out as it's just not worth the time and effort to return them. Having limited options for grocery shopping in Lowell, I was somewhat forced to try them again a few weeks later. My purchase included strawberries. Of course, same 'ol thing. Got home and found they were moldy. From that point on, I started shopping at the Lowell Aldi, or made the drive to Meijer in Merrillville. Yesterday (several weeks later), I needed something that Aldi doesn't carry, was in a hurry, so I took a chance on Stracks. Low and behold, I picked up a bag of organic apples, got them home, opened the bag and the apples were wrinkled. And anyone that's an apple lover knows, when apples are wrinkled, they're OLD. They are constantly out of items. Specifically ad items. When you ask anyone for help with an item not on the shelf you get zero help and zero results. This starts at the top. Between the terrible store manager and the front end manager, the people working are very poorly trained and their attitudes suck. How can you not train the people to properly bag items? I put everything on the conveyor in order of how it should be bagged. Cold with cold cans with cans, produce with produce soft stuff and eggs last so it goes on top etc. Yet, every time they screw it up. I shouldn't have to bag my own crap. Maybe take the money you're saving by using self checkout lanes and use it to train your people. Management included! read more

Yesterday I purchased the raspberry mini sugared turnovers. These are made with puff pastry. When I got home I fixed a cup of tea and opened the turnovers. These turnovers are like rubber. You cannot bite into these rubber dough turnovers, in fact you cannot even pull them apart. Nothing in this $5.00 package are you able to EAT. i will bring them back to the store today so they can put these in the Fisher Price toy section. Curb side pickup failed me. Noted NO SUBSTITUTIONS. Ordered 100% cranberry juice gave me cran apple blend. Ordered 10 yogurts gave me eight. Ordered double stuff oreos gave me regular. Called store and they said they can't check to see how much i got charged because it's an app. Insta cart charged me the full price for everything I ordered even the items i did not get. This is my favorite grocery store in the area, especially since the remodeling. It has a huge bakery section, where the cupcakes are massive. They have really good cakes and turnovers too. The deli case is massive, and there's a wide variety of cheeses complete with samples so that you can try them all. They sell both hot and cold food in the deli section. Their chicken tenders are good, but I'd skip the wings. The deli salads section is like a full aisle, including the basic coleslaw and potato salad, but including a bunch of dessert salads and jellos as well. I recommend the Strawberry Cloud, which is about $1 for a small container. I love their new organic/healthier aisle. They now carry my favorite brand of yogurt, Greek Gods, and almond flour, which makes it easier for me to make my beloved macarons. It's always clean and the staff is always friendly and helpful and the prices are pretty standard grocery prices. The only real issues that I have here are with ice cream, and it's been this way for years. Whether I buy Popsicles or ice cream, it is always obvious that there have been temperature issues in the store. The ice cream is usually weird and icy, and the Popsicles deformed. I also love that they have a sushi bar now. read more

I am really disappointed with this store. The first incident happened when an employee accused me of buying $240 worth of lottery tickets and not paying for them. How can you buy lottery tickets and not pay for them? Doesn't make any sense. Then, I was told by management that they talked to the employee about the situation so I continued to go to the store. Then on yesterday, another incident happened where I was cheated out of four dollars at the customer service desk. Matter of fact, both of these incidents, happened at the customer service desk. I had been shopping at this store for more than 15 years. The store needs to do a better job at vetting new employees. I would give it no stars If I could. read more

When you are from the Northwest Indiana/Northeast Illinois area you tend to be a Jewel customer or a Stracks customer. I consider myself a Jewel customer, but Stracks did have some attractive digital sale items this week. I clipped the ones I wanted and printed. Got to the checkout line and was greeted by a petite blonde, Roberta. When she rang up my last item, my grapes, she announced, "You didn't clip the digital coupon!" I assured her I had and showed her my printout of my clips. She exclaimed, "You didn't check the box!" So, if this is true, why aren't all the offers on my printout? When I get angry, I am not disrespectful, rude or loud, but you can tell I am simmering. Despite my saying I just wanted to pay and go, she corrected the price. When I put in my pin, again, she exclaimed, "Wrong PIN!" I totally felt like a third grader whose teacher was calling my mom to tell her, "Joy is not working to potential!" I am sick and tired of going to Cedar Lake Strack & Van Til for groceries and coming home with half of the things I went to get. I went there today, today is Saturday one of the busiest days of the week thinking I would find what I need, but NO the shelves are still half full. I am sick of them pushing their best choice products at me. They should be called Best Choice instead of Strack & Van Til. If this doesn't change quickly i will be forced to take my $400 a week elsewhere. It's a real a shame the convenience of this store is great if they would only get their act together. I love to support local businesses. If they don't stock most of the products I need, how do I keep going there. Can someone please help them get new store management. Strack has OK selection of foods. Of course I'd like to see more Organics introduced but the Midwest is always slow on the uptake of clean foods and the customers merit the product. Most look for cheap over quality. So that said my only real complaint is in the Deli after 7PM or so. I've had a few uncomfortable encounters with your staff. One young African American male working there last evening seemed totally put out to wait on us. Last night I watched him throw a spoon towards a plastic container lazily, like he could care less. This same man never asked how I wanted my meat sliced. His attitude sucked. If Munster Stracks isn't more discerning in who they hire I'll be more discerning to where I grocery shop. I ordered a 3-tier simple design fall colored cake for my daughter's birthday. She had a very stressful year and I wanted this to be special for her party. I never was able to get her a cake like this before so I was excited that now I could do it for her. On 11/5/22 - Munster location) My husband went to pick up the cake and it was beautiful (he sent me a pic). It was topped with about 9 beautiful fall-colored roses made of frosting and it was exactly what I wanted. When my husband got home, we opened the box and somehow 5 or 6 roses had been smeared down the cake. Don't get me wrong, I totally blame my husband for this. We still had a couple hours left until her party started so I called the bakery and asked if it would be possible to put some frosting roses back on the top of the cake and they said to bring it back. Ok fine (Whew) so that's what we did. When we arrived and showed them the cake, they outright refused to do anything to help me. Even after I said I would pay whatever they wanted to just have them put the roses back on. I mean Seriously! 5 frosting roses for a cake that I paid $110 for, and they did nothing. I wasn't even asking them to fix the slight smear on the side. It literally would have taken 5 stupid minutes to squirt some flowers on the section that were missing. Nobody else was even in line, nobody was on the phone. They were just standing there. They were rude, cocky, dismissive and unwilling to help us in anyway. Why did they tell us to come back if they weren't going to do anything? Needless to say, the party was fine and we laughed about how my husband messed up the cake. In the end it is just a cake. However, I will NEVER use them again. They were very, very unprofessional and their behavior was disgusting. read more

There's always long lines (never enough lanes open). Customer service counter as well. Twice (2 times) in the past month I bring home produce (veggies) to find them past expired date & even moldy when I open them that day. I now always check. I still find some on their shelves. i LOVE my Stracks.....long an Indiana tradition...and now i find out Chicago Yelpers have been enjoyin the great prices and service we have been getting for years, with the Stracks on Elston...i was reading reviews of that one and im glad to see all the Yelpers up that way are loving it as well....one thing i was laughing at though was 50% of the reviews from my north side buddies was how they all thought the name was very funny for a grocery store....its the last names of two guys that went into bizz together..... Mr. Strack and a Mr. Van Till...... how people think that is funny for some reason cracks me up.... now back to MY Stacks :-) large parking lot.....the cool little community message board right inside to put up flyers about your garage sale, church dinner or lost kitty..... a manager usually standing right there as you walk in.....always with a welcome very clean and wide aisles....first stop is when i walk by the deli to munch some samples they put out everyday.... crab or 7-layer dip...yumm....a huge selection of meants an cheeses to choose from....hot food for takeout.....one drawback here though is the fried chicken looks a light light brown, not the dark crispy skin that makes fried chicken what it needs to be..... seafood counter just past the deli....they will even fry up your fish for you, no extra charge....nice selection but some fish looks like it has seen a better day.....the only reason to go down the street to Jewel.... super produce prices and selection....check out the freezer there, a small farm up in MI, flash freezes thier own fruit and you can get it here.... good selection of ethnic foods.....thier selection of bottled salsas is amazing...the usualls that all stores sell plus Frontera Grill and Ditka's to over 20 different varieties from small companies from Mexico, Texas and all over the country..... meat dept is good along with prices......pork shoulder for your BBQ on sale alot for 99 cents a pound....and one of the only places ive seen tri-tip sold.....they call it sizzle steak and the week of this review its on sale for $3.99 lb.... thats craziness :-) ask them for a tri-tip roast and grill that thing...yummi in my tummi...... the bakery is just ok, nothing special.....but free cookies alway handed out to the kiddies.....and they do make a good in house italian bread.. its just really cool store and everyone seems to want to go out of thier way to help you....... read more

I have purchased meat from here on three different occasions and the meat was rancid. The first time is was pre-wrapped Salmon in front of the deli. It began to smell horrible on the 1st day. I returned it and was given a full refund without a receipt so I was still satisfied. A few weeks later I purchased around $70 worth of ribs directly from the deli. On day two, one of the racks of rib had a rancid smell. I had to return it the day of the BBQ. I was not offered a refund and told that I could only exchange. I really just wanted another rib for the grill and the man at the deli discouraged the woman from going to the back to find a replacement. Then, I stayed a way for a while but returned for a short run. This time, I smelled my chicken breast before I left the store but wasn't sure. Then, I smelled it again when I was loading my car with groceries. I turned around right away to return it. The customer service cashier, snatched the receipt from my hand. Then, questioned what I was saying when I wasn't talking to her. So, when I told her "I felt like you snatched the receipt from me" She responded in a condescending tone, "No, I did not. What reason would I have to do that?" As if I was being irrational, when the other person around me noticed it too. I am officially done with this place. I have tried one too many times. When I first moved to Schererville, I really loved that location and store. Now, I won't go to another Strack and Van Til ever again. I would sooner drive to Illinois. read more

Yes, the remodeling has been a bit of a pain with staples flitting about like blind hummingbirds in a botanical garden. Fortunately, they often post someone to point you in the right direction. It has also been a revelation to watch the transformation of this store from a solid grocer to an expansive purveyor. The massively enlarged produce section almost makes me want to become a Vegan. (Until I hit the muscular meat department, anyway.) They've got a thoughtful and large collection of organic goods, a very good selection of common fruits like apples, and citrus; even key limes. There were fresh berries, fingerling bananas, a couple different kinds of mangos, a multitude of greens and root vegetables. I would like to see a wider variety of fresh mushrooms such as chanterelle, oyster, shiitake, and porcini. I like to cook Thai food and so lemon grass would also be a nice addition. (As would fresh galangal, a rhizome similar to ginger but more intensely flavored. It's tough to pass the bakery section without needing a dose of insulin. The deli department seems to have a vast array of salads although I usually make my own. The meat selection there seems a bit wanting but I don't spend much time there. The meat section has increased in size and scope. All the usual suspects are there but I also found lamb shanks in stock that I use to make a Greek style Osso Bucco. They even had duck bacon! The ethnic sections are well stocked. You'd have to go to a carniceria to find a better selection of Latin foods. I was amazed to see an excellent selection of Indian meal kits so you can whip up some chicken tikka masala on the fly. I'll stop rambling for now to mention their greatest asset. That's the staff that works there. The stockers have always been willing to show me where to find something and they smile while doing it. The cashiers are friendly and efficient. They'll haul your groceries out as if they really want to do it. I've even cornered a few of the managers and spoke with them for more than a few minutes about the store and never once got the brush off. I've had fun searching for stuff during the renovation but I can't wait to see Strack and Van Til's when the gestation is complete. read more

I have been a longtime Strack's shopper, that is until recently. Strack and Van Til's has been doing shifty advertising in their sales ad. they had a sale one week advertising Pepsi product 12 packs at $2.50 each , you have to buy 4, but when you get into the store they say it was a misprint in the ad, the prices of the 12 packs became $2.99, so it wasn't much of a deal at all. Then in a recent sale they show all kinds of 12 packs of pop at 3 for $9.00, it does not say no mixing or matching in the ad, well when you are in the store, it says no mix or match. There are a lot of instances, items out of stock and no substitute, no rain checks. I am done shopping at this store, they won't get my business anymore. read more

This used to be one of our go to stores, and I know everyone is struggling due to the virus, but we can't go there anymore. A couple weeks ago we bought some steaks, got them home, immediately opened them the same day to cook them, and they were rancid. When we opened the package the smell caused our heads to go back. It was awful! They offered to let us exchange it and I said I didn't feel comfortable doing that considering the meat was rancid. They did give us a refund. Now yesterday we ordered some groceries from straks to be delivered via Instacart! Everything I ordered had to be replaced by the shopper because the store wasn't stocked, and we are talking things that you wouldn't think would be out of stock. I ordered some apples, put them away and the same night I went to get one! They are rotten with mold on them! I already contacted Instacart about the shopper... but seriously?! Straks first sells us rancid meat and now rotted apples with mold?! Like I said, it WAS our go to store. Not anymore. read more

What's the point of having a bakery and the baked goods are STALE. When I go there, the baked goods "look" so inviting and when I grab my tissue paper and bag to give them yet, another chance, the goods are too firm to call it fresh. With ALL the bakeries around, do they believe a customer does not know what a FRESH DONUT feels like? Well yet again, I throw the tissue paper away without buying anything. Strak van til on Sibley in Hammond Indiana I visit on the regular but today I tryed to order a hot meal at there deli.Kayla M was waiting on customers and saw me standing at the hot food area for 20 minutes.Her manager Galvan also saw us standing at the counter waiting as he went past us into the deli .She took care of all other customers at deli area even the ones who arrived 10 mins after me.?!I question her should I wait in line at deli area or is someone taking customers at the hot food area?? She went into a rage "Ma'am" I'm only one person and the other woman asked if u wanted ribs there was a ten minute wait ?? The other older white employee didn't wait for our response or even ask if we wanted to order?? Kayla then got even more rude replying she's not breaking her back!??? Worst customer service EVER!!!! Left the store upset and went back to talk to manager Galvin.He replied he saw us standing there but didn't know what happened??? I'm so discusted by this employee she really makes me want to tell everyone I know my experience and I'm going to go online social media to let everyone else know my experience!!! This place is expensive and has very little selection of each product, usually two brands, sometimes only one. The bakery doesn't have any crunchy bread options at all. This place is all hype and marketing tricks. I only go here in an emergency or occasionally out of convenience. Also the card readers don't always work and they don't have the technology to manually enter a card at the register. In short it's over priced and annoying. read more

Strack & Van Til is by far the best grocery store in the area. There really isn't that much to say about it. The food selection is huge, with a fully-staffed butcher and bakery. The employees at Stracks are plentiful and the store is always kept in pristine condition. Stracks is also one of the few grocery stores around that have bag boys deliver the groceries to your car for you. read more

I love this store now that they have remodeled! Fresh bakery with sample cookies for the kiddos, sushi counter, cheese counter, the deli offers both hot and cold options for a ready made meal, the seafood counter will fry your selection to order, an extensive salad bar, fresh produce, great meat process if you catch a sale. They have a specialized aisle for organic products with a much bigger selection than you would think. The only issue I've had here, and I've had it for years, is the frozen food. I do not recommend purchasing your ice cream here. It is ALWAYS grainy and icy and weird, like it does if you re-freeze melted ice cream . They obviously have an issue with maintaining temperature. But if you skip the ice cream aisle is a great store. read more
