Review: The "Donut Heist" at Market Basket Shrewsbury…read moreRating: (and that's being generous with the sprinkles) If you've ever wanted to feel like a high-stakes international jewel thief while picking up a loaf of bread, look no further than the Shrewsbury Market Basket. I didn't realize that entering the bakery section required a background check and a polygraph, but here we are. Yesterday, I witnessed the "Great Donut Stakedown." They actually cornered a veteran--a man who probably navigated minefields--and accused him of smuggling a single glazed donut. I half-expected the SWAT team to fast-rope from the ceiling and the "cleanup on aisle 4" guy to start readng him his Miranda Rights. The customer service here has gone from "hectic" to "paranoia-induced fever dream." Apparently, the profit margins on a 90-cent pastry are so thin that they've redirected their entire security budget to profiling senior citizens and veterans. After a very awkward confrontation and the realization that, no, he wasn't hiding a Long John in his pocket, they offered an "apology" that was about as warm as a frozen turkey. If you enjoy being treated like an extra in Ocean's Eleven for the crime of wanting a snack, this is your spot. Personally, I'll be taking my "criminal expertise" elsewhere.

Market 32 is our closest grocery store, yet it is always one of our last choices. Our pecking order…read moreof supermarkets in our area is as follows: 1. Wegmans 2. Whole Foods 3. Market Basket 4. Stop & Shop 5. Market 32 6. Price Chopper/Hannaford We realize that quality and selection with some of these grocery stores can vary by location. For example, a Price Chopper can be much nicer in one town than in another (Price Chopper Webster, MA is a very nice PC). But in our area, we stand by these standings! We use Market 32 as a giant convenience store for on demand staples like hamburger patties and rolls, milk and eggs. That said, some of these items are much more expensive than Market Basket. And when it comes to produce, we're always disappointed with Market 32 quality, and often the price too. Bok choy is a good example. Market 32 Bok choy is often $2 more a pound than at Market Basket, and limp, like it's been on a Price Chopper truck for a few days too long. And the cod we tried, was very fishy and compares poorly with cod loins from Wegman's. Market 32 prepared pizza was very disappointing, though I tried sushi here once (I was starving), and to my chagrin, it was pretty good. On the plus side, this Market 32 is quite new, quite clean, and usually quite quiet. But other than on-demand necessitates, we have much better choices if we're willing to drive an extra 10 - 15 minutes.

Some prices could be more competitive; however, Amazon Prime members receive sale pricing on select items, and using the Amazon credit card earns 5% back on the entire purchase, which helps offset the premium. The self-checkout lanes work very well, and I almost always use them. There's consistently a staff member nearby to assist if needed. The traditional checkout lanes are less impressive--lines can get long, and there often aren't enough baggers during busy periods. Prepared food quality is mixed. The sushi is quite good, as are the rotisserie chickens, but some of the other prepared foods have been underwhelming. The store has a second-floor dining area, accessible by a long stairway or elevator. While the seating area is nice, it's not especially convenient if you've started your shopping and then get hungry, I don't think you can bring your cart upstairs and it's unclear where to leave a cart. For that reason, I'd likely eat first and shop afterward. By comparison, Wegmans handles this better, with dining areas on the first floor and plenty of space to bring your cart along. Wegmans also offers a noticeably stronger prepared foods selection overall. That said, I still like Whole Foods and use them regularly--for delivery (very good), pickup (also good), and in-store shopping.

On too many occasions to remember, I've gone to purchases ground beef (from the meat case) to find there is none. The excuse today around 3:30pm was that, "It was a busy day." Well, I hope so. That's what business owners usually hope for, don't they? I am a small business owner. My customers would be baffled if I told them, "Sorry, it was a busy day." Maybe the store managers in Shrewsbury would do well to visit other grocery stores in the area, especially other Whole Foods locations, to see how a meat case is still stocked in the middle of the afternoon on a Friday. This is just another case of the decline of customer service in our society.
