We decided we needed a getaway to somewhere different and got a room in Stonington. This time of year there are few restaurants open, but Stonecutterd Kitchen was not a disappointment! First, dinner - the Baked Stuffed Haddock was the best I have had! The haddock was moist and fresh, there was enough crab to taste, the stuffing was crisp, and the cheese sauce did not overpower the perfectly seasoned dish. My husband enjoyed the Fish Tacos without the spicy bits. Next morning we went back for breakfast and had a very good breakfast. I loved that they offered "build your own" omlette! Very well done. We just arrived in town and were starving and were gladly seated 15 minutes before the kitchen closed. We had a nice table overlooking the waterfront and were waited on promptly. It took a little bit for the food to arrive but they were pretty busy. The fish (haddock) and chips was a very good sized portion with thick, tender, flaky fish with a very light breading and not greasy! Fries were a tad salty and cool but crisp. $18 for a large portion. The other entree was a small lobster roll for $24 market price. It was fresh and tasty (lemon really brought out the flavor) but hard to judge overall as our first Maine lobster roll. The bag of Lays chips was a visual drawback to the overall presentation. $9 for an IPA pint was pretty pricey in my mind. Overall a decent meal that hit the spot, so would say a 3.5 overall. We got take-out another evening. The Meat and Potatoes specialty pizza (12" for $15) was weirdly delicious. It is creamy mashed potatoes, lots of bacon, cheddar cheese, chives and horseradish sour cream sauce. The crust was done nicely. Fish tacos ($17.99) were 2 large sized in little paper boat holders with fries. They were loaded with nice chunks of grilled fish and avocado. The fish was good but would say to hold the spicy remoulade or ask for light as they were swimming in the sauce and it kind of overwhelmed the fish. Stopped in on a Sunday, the place was fairly busy. Waitress was fast and friendly. I ordered the Haddock tacos, my wife ordered the Haddock dinner. When our order arrived we split our dinners, I gave her one of my tacos and she gave me half of her Haddock filet. The filet was really delicious, so were the tacos I preferred the filet, bigger portion. I was really hungry that day so if you want something filling order the haddock dinner and not the tacos. read more

Our go to place! Great family and friends vibe. It serves as the local gathering place, year round. A great way to meet new friends and catch up with the old ones. Good variety of food options. My favorites are the Antipasto Salad with maple balsamic dressing (made in-house) and the meat and potatoes pizza. My husband does not like to miss prime rib night. Stone Cutters Kitchen practicing good safety protocol, such as much of the State, which has been impressive see and feel. Open only on the backside of the establishment with outdoor seating. Upper deck seating and tables below off the parking area. Table service on both levels once you've placed your order at their protected window on the upper deck. Stairs do need to be climbed, so I'm sure orders could be taken at the table for those in need. My wife and I decided to climb the stairs while we still can. The window, protected by a sheet of swinging plexiglass, menu board outside along with paper copies. Specials are posted on the counter with a fair selection. After sizing up the order taker, I asked my usual question, "What's your favorite?" Sizing up is important, read the face, see if the person might be open to the inquiry with a touch of levity. Next the individuals stance; is there the appearance of joy in their role, do they appear to love food as you would, and their level of experience. As the question is asked, continue to read, but most important, listen, so further inquiry can be properly asked; this is where the levity can be played to lighten the back and forth (aka interrogation). For instance, my wife asked for a Fuzzy Naval. The young lady, serving as Order Captain and Cashier, appeared confused, from a different time in space. She stepped back behind a screen where their more experienced barmaid could be heard say, "...Oh sure I know how to make a Fuzzy Navel..." The blushing Order Captain returned with a smile, "Yes, okay, it's even on my order tablet!" The Barmaid then turned the corner acknowledging its less common these days, than years gone by. I then had to turn the screws a little tighter for fun. I offered to both, "Way back in the stone ages when the Fuzzy Naval first walked the planet, I and I alone, invented the little known adaption, the 'Bloody Russian Fizzy Fuzzy Navel.' (B.R.F.F.N ingredients explained -- below)" Yes, it's a real thing, except it's wandering legs only formed for short traveling radius. Hopefully, this Review and Self-proclamation will spread it's radius far and wide. The ingredients: Cranberry Juice (Red), Russian (Vodka), Tonic/Seltzer (Fizz), Fuzzy (Peach Tree), and finally, OJ (the Navel). Weathered like me the Barmaids jaw dropped open. "Do you want one of those?(!)" I replied, "No thanks, but a beer will do." We turned with my chilled can of Baxter IPA in-hand and chose a table on the upper deck. About half of the tables, on both levels were occupied with ample spacing. We grabbed a table along the rail and our birds-eye the view of the Harbor area enhanced our appetites. Very shortly afterwards our sandwiches and my Dear's ancient Fuzzy Navel arrived. The sandwiches were delivered on recyclable tray with a bag of Lays chips and dill wedge. We ordered The Colossal Crab Hoagie style and a Crab Rueben. The breads were both fresh and well suited for each order. The Rueben's cut thick, buttered, and toasted crisp. The Colossal was just that -- a huge mound of diced crab mixed with mayo sauce all housed in a lettuce wrap and it's Hoagie roll. In summary, it was delightful and casual meal with pleasant scenery. I have just witnessed the massive lack of professionalism I have ever seen and its astounding to me! In today's economy, for any business owner to hold someone accountable for SOMEONE ELSES b.s. 2.5 years later is horrible. The owner has lost a very frequent customer in myself and my husband. Mind you since Novemberof 2021, we have spent on the average of 500$/ month there! Formerly known as the fisherman's friend, stonecutters kitchen has been a work in transition for three years now. What was once a wonderful sit down spot with amazing seafood served all ways (fisherman's friend) morphed into stonecutters kitchen which was essentially a take out window with no service and a tiny menu. Finding that model wasn't working (horrific, and the food was bad too) they've brought back the bar and reintroduced table service, to a point. In addition, the menu has expanded back to having multiple seafood, lobster, clam, scallop stews and chowders as well as fried seafood in any form, lobster steamed, lazy mans, scampi, roll, etc. Pizza and sandwiches round out the menu with several traditional entrees like steak, chicken and halibut. In current form, find a seat, take a menu (the specials are only printed at the ordering line on a chalk board so check first), place order at cash register, take table number and wait. Order beverages (beer, wine liquor) separately at the bar. The food will be brought to your table -- all at once. Even if you order appetizers and stews, everything arrives at the same time so don't expect to have courses as at a traditional restaurant. I suppose you could order what you want first and then go back and place a second order. Either way, what comes out is excellent. Lobster stew ($18) is a cup packed with lobster meat and creamy broth. Crab chowder is a similarly rich cream broth packed with tender, sweet crab meat. The fisherman's platter ($25) arrives with an ample portion of scallops, shrimp, clams and haddock -- all battered and fried well. The clams may have been the winners with large bellies and very juicy. Mussels in garlic white wine broth are on the smaller side but delicious. On Friday night we had a very unpleasant evening at Stonecutters in Stonington, Me. After being seated, we waited at least 20 minutes for a server to approach our table. She, a Stonington resident, is the only reason I have given only one star. She was kind, though very rushed. After another 15 minutes, our drinks arrived, then another 15 for our food. I had the worst lobster stew ever, a bowl of milk with butter and 2 Oz of lobster at best - and thin one of Maine's most well-known lobstering towns- $30. My husband had a salad of the bag-o-salad variety. We should have left earlier. We saw several other disgruntled customers inside and outside the restaurant. This was the only place open to eat on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Stoington. You order at the counter, pay, take a number and they bring out all the food to your table at once. Everything was in plastic containers. We felt the food was awful. Fried haddock in a gooey batter was so dry and tasteless that I left half of it. Salad was iceberg lettuce cucumbers and unripe tomatoes with commercial dressing. Uck. Fish chowder was tasteless. BLT with avocado was good. Place was large and clean with large TV's on the walls and there is a nice deck outside with news of the water. Never the less we will not return for the lousy food. We did not try the pizza which may be OK. If it is open, eat at the Harbor Cafe and avoid Stonecutters. read more

We have visited this restaurant many times. I always get the same thing a side of French Fries with melted cheddar cheese and jalapenos. When I ordered it this time I was told I could not have it. They have french fries, they have cheddar cheese and they have jalapenos. I was confused. After the server told me no, I went to the hostess and asked for some help. The manager came to the table and very rudely told me they would make it for me this time but not again. When my husband and friend got their meals we did not have drinks or silverware. When I asked the waitress for silverware she actually dropped the f bomb. She returned with the drinks and 1 set of silverware. We gave that to our guest who was eating a salad. When she did not return, I asked another employee for silverware and napkins. After they were done eating my fries with cheese and jalapenos arrived. You order from a food counter, if you can get the attention of the teen working the counter. Then you seat yourself with your order number...want something from the bar...you need to go get it yourself. Your food is delivered by a server, and that's the end of your service. If you sit outside, the view is great, but you can hear everything going on in the kitchen...not necessarily a good thing! The food is ample, but just average for the price. Not bad-not great. For being on the water the seafood is not always as fresh and delicious as one would assume so that sucks! The service and process is a bit wonky but we've never had any real complaints about it- it's just different! The portions are decent and you can't beat the 5$ kids meals! The view is nice and there is plenty of seating so that you never feel as though you're into if anyone else. We have eaten here a handful of times and I am never impressed but never disappointed ( if that makes sense?) - we wander over to the ocean touch tank afterwards and get ice cream across the street. Not too impressed by Fisherman's Friend Restaurant. Maybe it was because I had set my expectations a bit too high (my brother-in-law and sister dined there once before and raved about it). Anyways, we went on a Thursday night. The restaurant was really quiet, given that it was still kind of 'off season'. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder and their 'mega lobster roll'. Hubbo ordered grilled lobster because we've never had grilled lobster before. The clam chowder was quite nice. Not the creamy chowder, but more brothy. I was really disappointed by the mega lobster roll because I was told that the difference is that it will be a huge portion instead of their regular lobster roll. Well, it was in a sub roll, but as far as the actual quantity of lobster chunked, I didn't feel it was "mega". Hubbo's grilled lobster was just ok. If anything, it actually made the lobster a bit more dried. The price was higher than expected as well. read more

So glad wait service is back. Attentive and friendly. A very reliable restaurant especially for my favorite entrees - fried seafood. Prices are up, as they are at every restaurant, for understandable reasons. Good selection of beers although a nut brown ale would be good to add to the selection of beers.
