We came by on a whim during COVID when they were offering curbside pickup only. Because we couldn't taste, we chatted it up with the owner who proceed great recommendations (as we purchased, taste tested at home, and made delicious cocktails). The Rock n Rye is fantastic! And don't miss the apricot liqueur!

The $5 drink of the day...AMAZING!!

The couple who owns this place are adorable! And they make fabulous brandy's!! I thought my favorite would be the peach and but was surprised by how delighted I was with the green walnut brandy. I also tried the apricot, star crimson pear and an apple. We came here with our whiskey passports and it was my favorite distillery that we went to that day. I opted to try all my 5 samples and also order a ginger peach spritzer for $5. That was made with their peach rock & rye brandy, ginger beer, bitters and a lemon peel. That was incredibly light, thirst quenching and tasty. It's the kind of drink you want to enjoy in the sun. Or indoors. Or anywhere really. If you get a chance to go tasting here, do it! Parking is free and you will gain an appreciation of brandy's, if you don't already have one.

My best distillery tasting experience! Luckily, we were the only ones there and the owner took very good care of us and was fun to talk to. He even took us behind the scenes and showed us the equipment. We leisurely tasted our flight while snacking on arare mix. We enjoyed the Tawny Duet brandy so much we took a bottle home and neither of us are big brandy fans. It is very smooth and not cloying, with rich flavor. Tasting the walnut liquor was a highlight for me.

This couple has a distillery in a little warehouse out near the train tracks. This is nothing fancy but they make some interesting stuff. Ever have whiskey made with just oats? or rye? or barley? They make it here, and blends of those whiskeys. They also make some brandies, eau-de-vie and liqueurs. I loved the quince liqueur and you'll never find anything like it elsewhere. Also, they make brandies out of different pears and it's so interesting to taste the difference. $5 for a tasting. It's not the easiest to fine. It's in Suite B at the address above. Only open on weekends.

Was awesome getting to see the still running in the back room working its magic - you can't see from the picture, but it was totally running

Last stop on my whirlwind tour of Portland distillery passport distilleries, probably the most out of the way, and one of the coolest. Certainly the most annoying, though, because they make a *wide* array of different things, they all looked amazing, and I couldn't try all of them in one visit, nooo! If I lived in the area, I would make sure to try everything they made (and would be back anytime they made anything new!) It's 3 tastes for $5, and the Passport is one $5 taster, so I paid an extra $5 cause there were so many delicious-looking things, and still couldn't get to it all. Everything we did taste (including a couple extras they snuck in because they could tell I was nerding out over it all, which I absolutely was) were phenomenal - across a wide range, from the pear brandy, which literally tasted like biting into a pear, to the pear/quince brandy, which was more subdued (my least favorite of them, though it was still great), to the apple brandy, which tasted more like a gorgeous, smooth aged rum with just a hint of apple, to the peach whiskey, which absolutely still tasted like a whiskey, but sweetened with peach juice without giving up any of the whiskey notes, to the apricot liqueur, which tasted much lower proof than it was, more like a drinking vinegar, to the cranberry liqueur, that pretty much tasted like drinking plain cranberry juice (that'd be dangerous - the cranberry flavors *100%* cover up any hint of alcohol), to the nocino, which I'd never had one of before, so that was super cool - it was pretty delicious by itself (semi-sweet, a hint of walnut, and plenty of herbs), but I'm really looking forward to playing with it in cocktails - to, finally, the "tawny duet", which... is a port. A really good port, but still, funny. I was expecting to walk away with a fruit brandy or two, but instead, I walked away with a liqueur of something that isn't actually a fruit (walnuts), and... wine in all but name (sounds like they aren't legally allowed to *call* it wine, because they aren't a winery, but their website admits, it's a "port by any other name"). It's really good port, for a pretty good price for how good it is ($25 - their brandies are pricier). The coolest thing, though, was I learned midway into our private tasting (nobody else was there that Sunday when we showed up), that it was being given by the owners of the place (a husband and wife), you could tell they were really passionate about their work, and in addition to our tasting, they also offered to show us around the back room where the magic happens (yes please!), and gave us a little impromptu tour of the place. Fun fact: holy crap it's so cute and tiny! It's pretty amazing how much they can make in such a tiny distillery - I've seen micro-distilleries before that were pretty small, but they called theirs a "nano"-distillery, and I buy it. I love finding places that are off the beaten path like this - really smart of them to be part of something like the Passport, or I would never have found them in a million years, which would have been too bad. Just too bad they didn't happen to make a cherry liqueur, cause I really wanted one to go with the smoke tea liqueur from Townshend's Distilling (semi) next door. Oh well.

Stone Barn Brandyworks is the newest addition to Distillery Row, and it's a mighty find compliment to Portland's burgeoning distillery scene. Craft-distilling brandies and liqueurs for local fruits and grains, this tiny two-person operation is barely off the ground, but is making some of the most amazing brandies and liqueurs I have ever tasted. The location is way off the path, in this kind-of-tricky-to-find building on SE 19th that's only accessible from Powell via 19th or 20th. Check the map before you go or you'll, like me, drive around in circles trying to get there. Also, they're currently cash/check only, so bring funds as you'll definitely be buying a bottle on the way out. Only open Saturdays and Sundays (or by appointment), this no-frills distillery really is the picture definition of a nano-operation. The small garage-sized (but high-ceiling) space houses both the distillery and the tasting room, which consists of literally nothing more than a table near the door with a few dishes of local hazelnuts and the fruit flavor of the season (right now, in November, it's pears). The "tour" of the facility consists of taking one or two steps closer to the fermenters and stills as one of the two members of the husband/wife team describes the process. But really this here experience is all about the spirits. Currently, Stone Barn has an amazing array of offerings for how small the operation is, and the 5 stars on this review are primarily for these incredible distilled bottles of joy. Hard Eight Unoaked Rye: This clear rye whiskey has an incredible flavor. it's much sharper and edgier than your usual soft, sweet, corn/grain-heavy white dog products. It has this spicy heat and a nice lingering depth of flavor that makes it great for mixing. I snagged a 750ml bottle of this for my cabinet. Plum Brandy: This brandy (and all of their brandies), are not sweet, and that's why I love them. They run a lot more along the lines of a lightly fruit flavored grappa with just enough of the sweetness from the fruit to lay a soft blanket across the edge of what otherwise would be akin to rocket fuel. With the plum on the nose and a light residual aromatic across the palate, this is the kind of brandy you could drink a whole glass of after a meal and it would cut right through any lingering flavors and leave you refreshed with a nice clean aftertaste. Pear Brandy: See Plum Brandy above, but substitute pear flavor. Yup. I'll be back when I have more cash to buy one of these. Pinot Gris Grappa: This is a nice grappa offering made from local pinot grapes. It has a nice, hot, clean flavor that again is perfect for an after-dinner drink or night-cap. I liked this enough to pick up a 375ml bottle. Coffee Liqueur: This delicious coffee spirit brewed with locally-roasted Redwing coffee is some of the best coffee liqueur I've ever had. I'm guessing it's because these folks have the same palate as me. I prefer my liqueurs to be heavier on the flavor represented and lighter on the sugar/syrup, so that you get a nice, clean representation of the featured flavor backed by the fresh heat of a brandy base. This coffee liqueur delivers in spades, and may be something I have to grab just for holiday cocktails. Eastside Ouzo: This is easily the best ouzo I've ever had. While I'm a fan of House Spirits' ouzo, this one was, I can only assume, custom made for my palate. It's an incredibly dry ouzo with a very light yet firm anise flavor. As is the general style for Stone Barn, the spirit offers a nice sampling of flavor but doesn't coat the tongue, so you're left with a tasty lingering aftertaste that's almost more nasal - as the spirit lingers in your mouth instead of sticking to your tongue the flavor seems to lift up off and filter out through your nose. It's downright delicious. I can't wait until more seasonal liqueurs and brandies come out. I hear Quince is in the works, and I tasted a fantastic Bartlett Pear liqueur that had a nice sweetness like pear juice and left the most enjoyable aftertaste on my tongue. Running in the $30 range for most bottles, this stuff isn't all that cheap, but for something that's limited, special, made by hand from local products in small batches and only available here? It's a no-brainer. Go taste through their offerings and tell me you're not going to want to leave with at least one bottle of this stuff for apertifs or after-dinner digestifs. Brilliant.

Really great variety and tucked away from the crowds. Bought the Nocino which is a green walnut liqueur, what?? Crazy and I love it. Learned so much here from the knowledgeable owner.

We enjoyed our tasting experience!! So much that we had to purchase 3 bottles!! Tasty!!

I HIGHLY recommend scheduling a tasting here!! We purchased a tasting thru Living Social. It was not only a delicious experience, but it was educational! You can see the passion the owners Sebastian & Erica have! We will be back!! For now we will enjoy the 3 bottles that we purchased!

I waddled in skeptical. After all, we beavers know a thing or two about craftsmanship: sharp teeth, strong wood, steady paws. But the moment those folks poured me a sample of their American Single Malt, I realized I was in the presence of fellow artisans--humans who build with barley the way I build with birch. The aroma? Like sniffing a warm cedar log at sunset, with a hint of orchard fruit drifting downstream. The taste? Smooth as a freshly planed maple branch, with a delicious grain character that made me contemplate abandoning dam construction to pursue professional sipping full-time. The finish? Long, warm, and rich--lingering like the satisfaction of placing the final stick on a perfectly engineered lodge roof. And don't get me started on the place itself. The distillery is polished, welcoming, and smells pleasantly of oak instead of predators. The staff? Delightful! Not one of them tried to trap me, and they spoke about their whiskey with the passion of creatures who truly love their craft. Westward, my whiskered friends, you have built something remarkable.
