Edit: apparently I couldn't upload all 11 screenshots, but you get the gist TLDR: Moses is a nightmare to work with, bafflingly incompetent, and refused to rent an apartment to my Nigerian-American roommate and me and gave false and pretextual reasons for doing so. I visited an apartment in the East Village with Moses. After talking it over with my two roommates, we decided that we wanted to apply for it. I let Moses know and asked him to send us the application. I had to ask him to send it two more times before he finally did--this probably should've been a warning sign that he wasn't actually interested in renting the apartment. At the last minute, one of my two roommates dropped out because she decided that the 6th floor walkup would be too difficult with her asthma. My other roommate and I decided to go forward with the application anyway and to find someone else to sublet the third room. I assumed this would be no problem, since, even though our later conversations indicated that all three of us would be on the lease, Moses had told me when I visited the apartment that the landlord would only want two people on it. Plus, the third roommate was the only one without a guarantor and therefore the greatest risk of non-payment of rent. I sent in my half of the application, including the guarantor forms, and updated Moses on our roommate situation, asking him to add a clause permitting us to sublet to the lease. He texted me about an hour after I sent in the materials saying that it "won't work." When I asked why, he cited our third roommate dropping out and the fact that my father, who's a lawyer, had "edited documents" (all he did was write that he was responsible for half the lease, since my roommate's guarantor would be responsible for the other half and we even offered to send it back unedited). But then, bizarrely, Moses offered to help me find a studio on my own, without my Nigerian-American roommate. A studio would cost at least as much as half of the rent of the apartment we were applying for and my father would still be a lawyer and still be my guarantor, so this offer made absolutely no sense--unless, of course, Moses's real issue was not any of the reasons he listed but rather with renting to my Nigerian-American roommate, whose financial information he never received. My roommate like me, recently graduated from Columbia and was going to use her parents, both doctors, as guarantors. At the time Moses texted me, she had not yet submitted her half of the application because she was waiting for her mom to return from work to fill out the guarantor forms. Moses therefore had no reason to think she wouldn't be good for her half of the rent. All he knew about her was her Nigerian name. To make matters worse, I noticed today that he had relisted the apartment, after previously taking it off the market. I checked the StreetEasy history, and he's listed the apartment 3 different times this month, each for slightly different prices and square footage. If I were the landlord, I would be pretty upset that my broker turned down people willing to pay $3500/month, only to relist the same apartment for $3200. I've attached screenshots of my text conversation with Moses and the different listings for the apartment to this review for proof. read more

I rented from Moses 2 years ago for an apartment in lower manhattan and had a great experience. Moses always kept things simple. Was quick to respond and always helped when needed. ie. if needed something fixed (which was rare) or even noise complaints when everyone was adjusting to working from home. Moses was immediate to respond and help fix the problem. Was always honest and trustworthy. Would happily rent through him again. read more

My college aged son needed an apartment in a rush. We were fortunate to have found one of Moses' listings. Moses did not charge ridiculous agent fees like many others in Lower Manhattan area. Not only that, Moses went out of his way to get my son settled in even though he was out of town himself for that long weekend. He was so resourceful that he arranged keys, had someone took care of receiving delivery of bulk items, and installation of a/c, fridge and assembly of furniture. Throughout my son's stay, Moses was always ready to lend a hand at a moment's notice. Being a parent far on the west coast, I wholeheartedly appreciate Moses' generosity. Although I have never met Moses in person, he was always communicative and responsive to my inquiries. I glanced the few less than favorable reviews here. I just want to say that sometimes it was the landlord that imposes strict conditions. Being a property manager, it is hard to meet expectations of both tenants and landlords. In my experience, I couldn't have expected anyone better than Moses. Thanks for all you did for us, Moses.we owe you a big one. read more

I am so appreciative of Moses's professionalism, communication, and attention to detail. I went into the NYC rental market with no experience, and he helped me secure an amazing place. The process with Moses was clear, consistent, and manageable. Thank you, Moses! I am so lucky to be in Manhattan! read more

Nice to see Moses is still out there scamming people. Paid him over $200 a while back for a unit he knew we couldn't get because the landlord had specific requirements (none of which Moses explained or warned us about... just alluded to not specifying where we worked). He will gladly take your fees and set you up to fail though! We had all the typical qualifications, paid Moses, then when we met with the landlord we ended up being shut down, hard. Decided to take our losses and go somewhere else, but this guy has the NERVE to text and harass me! Accused us of moving in without paying him his broker's fee. Really one of the worst scumbags of NYC. Not sure if it was racially related (we are POC) but just wanted to share my experience in case it's helpful to others! read more

Horrible experience with this group! When moving out, I asked to for 24 hours notice-even the night before would have been nice- and Moses would text me randomly in the middle of the day, while I was at work, telling me he had people stopping by that afternoon to tour. This left me with no time to clean up the apartment for it to show. Then upon move out, Moses got my forwarding address to send the security deposit, so I thought everything was going smoothly. After 17 days, I still hadn't gotten the deposit back. When my roommate and I texted him asking what was going on, he informed us that he was not returning our deposit because of an "unpaid ConEdison bill." First, a tenants personal bill is NOT a legal reason to withhold a deposit. Second, my ConEdison account was up to date, so I had no idea what he was talking about. After questioning this and taking pictures of my (non overdue) ConEdison account, he demanded PDFs and screenshots of my bill by email, which I was nice enough to provide immediately. This seemed to irritate him that my account was up to date and that I could prove it. He then called me and I asked him what was going on. I asked if he was planning to tell me about this non-existent overdue ConEdison bill, because I would have provided the proof immediately. He told me that he had known about this "issue" for a few days and started to get very emotional. I told him that I was just confused about the whole situation and in response, he began to yell at me into the phone that he has children and does not care about my issue....not really sure what that had to do with my security deposit...This is literally his job. I then asked if I should just deal with the landlord directly since he was getting so upset, and he yelled that yes I should and hung up on me in the middle of the conversation. I asked him to please provide in writing (he would constantly ask me to provide my information in writing) where it says that broker can withhold a tenant's security deposit because of an unpaid personal bill (which wasn't even true in my case). He texted me back "I'm not responding to you any more." I ended up having to get my security deposit back directly from the landlord, who actually apologized for the confusion. So, after paying a brokers fee, in the end, Moses did not do his job whatsoever, and acted in an incredibly immature and unprofessional manner. My thanks is to the landlord who acted maturely and professionally and sent the deposit back after a short conversation. Wish I could give him 0 stars, future renters- beware! read more

Working with Moses was the best. We looked at 40+ apartments (seriously, we wanted the perfect place) before we met him and the 2nd unit he showed us we signed for on the spot. Moses excelled at listening to our must haves, didn't waste our time with apts that didn't fit the bill. He was always on time and followed through on all communication. He was able to help us negotiate on the rent and was very generous towards us on the brokers fee. We've lived in the unit almost a year now, and he has been our liaison w management for the small issues that popped up- helped to get the Windows replaced and a leak in the bathroom above is fixed right, the first time we asked. You should know that he shows units in nice buildings with great management companies and he'll be reachable and helpful long after he's paid. You won't go wrong having Moses on your team. read more

Just noticed a scathing review by Aram about the Stoller Group. I had quite the opposite experience so I wanted to share it. They showed me a fantastic apartment about 2.5 years ago, I expressed keen interest, they committed to holding it for one day for me to give me time to secure my money orders and rental application package, and 24-hours later I had my dream apartment! I had my stuff together, they had theirs, and it was as quick and painless an experience as you can get in NY. Proof of my positive experience: I even referred a buddy of mine to them (who ended up renting a place nearby). Let's be honest: renting in NY is about as pleasant an experience as ordering breakfast from Kenny Shopsin. To have someone like Abe and Moses help expedite you through the process makes at more like ordering from your local diner (efficient, honest, easy). read more

We had the absolute pleasure working with Moses. He is honest and upfront and you don't see that a lot from NYC brokers anymore. He went out of his way to make us feel at home and we are very thankful we had the opportunity to work with Moses and Stoller Group. If you are fortunate enough to work on a lease with them they will defiantly have your best interest in mind. read more

My experience with Stoller Group was nothing but wonderful! And stress free...a rarity when apartment hunting in NYC! A BIG thanks to Moses for rescuing me from a 4 month long nightmare search on Craigslist and helping me find the perfect place. He was straightforward, responsive, helpful, and didn't pressure me. After showing me several great apartments on a Monday after work, I ended up loving the first place I saw, filled out an application that same day and was signing my lease on Thursday afternoon. The entire process couldn't have been any better! Don't waste too much time with lackluster options, pushy brokers, and most importantly, scam artist management companies. Stoller Group is worth every penny to help you avoid these obstacles! I highly recommend Stoller Group for your next move! read more

Moses was really great and is super quick and clear with communication! I highly recommend working with him.

Moses of the Stoller Group has been has been incredibly helpful concerning my housing in NYC. Four years ago he facilitated my move to Nolita and recently just helped my update my lease for that apartment. Throughout the years I have referred him to many of my friends, and they were always amazing at the apartments he had to show and ultimately signed new leases with him as well. This group truly has the best picks of the neighborhood (Nolita and Chinatown)! Extremely friendly and efficient, I will use them the next time I want to switch it up! read more

I am thrilled with the apartment I've been living in for 3 months that I found through Stoller Group. Moses was extremely prompt with returning all of my communications, on time to show me the apartment, and thoroughly answered all questions I had about the apartment and building. He was very clear in communicating the materials needed, accommodated my schedule by meeting close to my office, and quickly processed my application. My landlady and super are the nicest and I love the apartment. Highly recommend! read more

It was a huge pleasure to work with Moses from beginning to end of my leasing experience. He was incredibly accommodating when I was searching for apartments and even offered to hold tours over FaceTime while I was not in the area. Moses was very communicative and was nice enough to hold my furniture before I moved in and help me get my air conditioner set up. Upon moving out, Moses was also very kind and generous to me. I had to move out in a rush, but he was flexible and let me leave my large furniture behind since I didn't know what to do with it. Thank you Moses. You made this experience completely hassle-free and really helped me and my family in tremendous ways. read more

I'm always filled with trepidation when I have to apartment hunt in the summer, but thanks to Moses, I can easily say this was the most painless experience I've ever had. In only my first week of hunting, Moses helped me find a great apartment in my price range, submit an application, and sign a lease. He made all of the paperwork incredibly simple, was very professional throughout, and even kept in touch after I had signed the lease to make sure everything went well. I would highly recommend Moses. read more

I had such a great experience with the Stoller Group, I seriously couldn't rave about it more! Whenever you need Moses he responds right away, and if anything ever needs to be fixed it is immediately. Moses is extreme nice and friendly and I would recommend the Stoller Group to anyone that is looking for an apartment in NYC! read more

Moses and Abe were both extremely helpful. We have not yet moved into our new apartment, but we are thrilled with how smoothly things went. Issues were handled in real-time, without any sort of run-around. We ended up taking the first apartment they showed us, which made the process quick and essentially painless. Never was there any sense of pressure to take a particular place and never did we feel a hard sell. They were willing to negotiate finances and were constantly responsive and accommodating. I highly recommend using Stoller Group for renting an apartment. read more

Moses was great in helping us find our apartment. We had a specific budget and he worked within that. We've been in our place a year and are re-signing the lease for another because it is such a great place. I highly recommend Moses for all your new york city apartment needs. You won't be disappointed. read more

Working with Moses specifically was an absolute dream. I've worked with many different real estate agencies and companies and this by far is the best. With that said, he was honest, flexible and trustworthy. Additionally, Moses is very knowledgeable and responds quickly to all questions and concerns. Not only that, he is an awesome guy. I recommend Stoller Group to whoever is apt hunting in NYC. They rock! read more

Moses and the Stoller Group are far and away the best brokers in Manhattan. Expectations with brokers are generally as low as it gets, but they went above and beyond to help me with every last detail of my apartment. Unlike most seedy brokers in Manhattan, who you would not want to run into in a dark alley, much less do business with, Moses was a first class gentleman and a pleasure to work with throughout my move. He is articulate, intelligent, polite, highly presentable, friendly, and easy going. First, he did not waste any time trying to push me or give me a hard sell on apartments I did not like, and when I found the one that was meant for me, he was knowledgeable about the landlord, tenants, neighborhood, and everything else one might consider when looking for a new apartment. He even drove me across town in his car to see the apartment that I ended up renting. After deciding to move forward with the apartment, he even met me in the coffee shop below my office to complete paperwork. He always follows up on emails and texts in a very timely manner to any questions or requests, and he always tries to be as flexible and helpful as possible. Once I locked down the apartment, Moses met me with keys to help me facilitate an early move into the new place. After having a disastrous experience with " Budget Moving" (Kevin Zabovsky, I'm talking to you, you thief. 347-977-4955 "budgetmoving@yahoo.com"), Moses came to my rescue on a hot day in July, when my movers ran off with some of my possessions, keys, and money and left the rest of my things on the stoop in front of my new apartment. Moses was there to help me within 15 minutes after I was robbed with a new set of keys and open arms to help with any of the heavy lifting, as I tried to quickly move my things from the street into the apartment. No Manhattan broker known to man would be this responsive and helpful from the goodness of their heart. He already had his money and owed me nothing, especially his time and sweat that came from the manual labor. If you have the pleasure to meet the Stoller Group and do business with them, I urge you to forget all other brokers and let them make your day. The process with Moses and the Stoller Group was seamless and first class, and they left me with the best impression that will stay with me for a lifetime. Simply put, Moses is the man, and you should do everything possible to work with him during your next move. read more

Stoller Group got me my first Manhattan apartment, and for that I'll always be grateful. But let's get real here. These guys aren't any better than your typical NYC rental sharks. Moses might seem nice enough on the surface, but he's also very shrewd and can intimidate if he wants to. - Moses told me to tip the super even before I moved in. I did, but this super never actually ended up making a major fix to the apartment. -During the rental process, he kept poking into my ethnic background and made it very clear he'd keep showing the apartment until it was rented. - When I moved out, he made sarcastic, bitter comments about my movers. CLASSY. Stoller Group's got several options in the downtown area. But a "breath of fresh air" in the rental market? Please. read more

does not initially disclose broker's fee on website postings, also is a hello or thanks too much to ask? sorry but can't recommend

I used Moses Stoller about a year ago to rent an apartment, and then he was my landlord contact person for the year I was in the apartment. He advised me that he wouldn't give me back my full security deposit when I moved out, basing it on things that are not a renter's responsibility to pay for, such as having an exterminator visit the apartment and for a window that was broken before I moved into the apartment. I would not recommend using this broker, as he appears interested only in the landlord's interests and not the renter's interests. read more

This is my first apartment in NYC and I went through 5 different brokers before finding Moses from the Stoller Group. Although the other brokers were nice, Moses was the most accommodating and easiest to work with. He was very clear on what I needed to do/bring, prompt on getting back and just a pleasure to work with. I've lived in my apartment for about 10 months now and I couldn't be happier. read more

Stoller group is the best! I am now a real estate agent myself and a former client of Moses's. We did two deals together and he was on top of things, and responsive at all times.. I Especially appreciated his help as I'm new to the business. As a client he was also very helpful and has listings no one else has access to. I still live in the apartment he rented me. He's been in the business forever and knows everything there is to know. Don't hesitate to rent from him, and if you're an agent, don't hesitate to work with him! read more

I would highly recommend Stoller Group for your next apartment/house search. Moses was absolutely the best. He's very calm, honest, and organized. In a sea of agents and brokers, Moses stands out as definitely someone I would contact again in the future. Considering his 15 year work experience, and being a genuine New Yorker (side note, i learned he grew up in Little Italy), his knowledge of New York real estate surpasses other agents and brokers. Particularly, I appreciated his quick replies, and consistent follow ups. The entire process was very smooth and collaborative. I'm very happy with my experience with Stoller Group. read more

Having a hard time believing that real people had a good experience with this broker. Bait-and-switch listings on Craigslist. Responds when he feels like (weeks after initial communications) and sends rude, uncalled-for messages while still asking if we want to work with him. Really? We had already found something, just like the times we've done before, without brokers who resort to pressuring, condescension, and underhanded tactics. read more

After dealing with the likes of the CitiHabitats of the world and other rat-race real estate companies in NYC, my experience with Stoller Group was a breath of fresh air. My wife and I along with our two year old son were looking for an apartment. We were at our breaking point after dealing with numerous other companies which consistently ended disastrously. Then we stumbled upon Stoller Group. These guys must have showed us about 10 apartments(my wife is extremely picky and it's hard to find a dog-friendly apartment) until we discovered the perfect spot with a back patio. This would not have happened without the splendid services of this family-operated real estate company. That is the key that seems to separate this from the large cold and impersonal firms that treated us like a number and as if we were inconveniencing them with our search. Stoller Group took the time to truly listen to my needs, which I know is a novel concept in NYC, but it is rare. I highly recommend the services of this gem that stands out amongst the sea of NYC real estate companies. read more
