Edit: apparently I couldn't upload all 11 screenshots, but you get the gist TLDR: Moses is a nightmare to work with, bafflingly incompetent, and refused to rent an apartment to my Nigerian-American roommate and me and gave false and pretextual reasons for doing so. I visited an apartment in the East Village with Moses. After talking it over with my two roommates, we decided that we wanted to apply for it. I let Moses know and asked him to send us the application. I had to ask him to send it two more times before he finally did--this probably should've been a warning sign that he wasn't actually interested in renting the apartment. At the last minute, one of my two roommates dropped out because she decided that the 6th floor walkup would be too difficult with her asthma. My other roommate and I decided to go forward with the application anyway and to find someone else to sublet the third room. I assumed this would be no problem, since, even though our later conversations indicated that all three of us would be on the lease, Moses had told me when I visited the apartment that the landlord would only want two people on it. Plus, the third roommate was the only one without a guarantor and therefore the greatest risk of non-payment of rent. I sent in my half of the application, including the guarantor forms, and updated Moses on our roommate situation, asking him to add a clause permitting us to sublet to the lease. He texted me about an hour after I sent in the materials saying that it "won't work." When I asked why, he cited our third roommate dropping out and the fact that my father, who's a lawyer, had "edited documents" (all he did was write that he was responsible for half the lease, since my roommate's guarantor would be responsible for the other half and we even offered to send it back unedited). But then, bizarrely, Moses offered to help me find a studio on my own, without my Nigerian-American roommate. A studio would cost at least as much as half of the rent of the apartment we were applying for and my father would still be a lawyer and still be my guarantor, so this offer made absolutely no sense--unless, of course, Moses's real issue was not any of the reasons he listed but rather with renting to my Nigerian-American roommate, whose financial information he never received. My roommate like me, recently graduated from Columbia and was going to use her parents, both doctors, as guarantors. At the time Moses texted me, she had not yet submitted her half of the application because she was waiting for her mom to return from work to fill out the guarantor forms. Moses therefore had no reason to think she wouldn't be good for her half of the rent. All he knew about her was her Nigerian name. To make matters worse, I noticed today that he had relisted the apartment, after previously taking it off the market. I checked the StreetEasy history, and he's listed the apartment 3 different times this month, each for slightly different prices and square footage. If I were the landlord, I would be pretty upset that my broker turned down people willing to pay $3500/month, only to relist the same apartment for $3200. I rented from Moses 2 years ago for an apartment in lower manhattan and had a great experience. Moses always kept things simple. Was quick to respond and always helped when needed. ie. if needed something fixed (which was rare) or even noise complaints when everyone was adjusting to working from home. My college aged son needed an apartment in a rush. We were fortunate to have found one of Moses' listings. Moses did not charge ridiculous agent fees like many others in Lower Manhattan area. Not only that, Moses went out of his way to get my son settled in even though he was out of town himself for that long weekend. He was so resourceful that he arranged keys, had someone took care of receiving delivery of bulk items, and installation of a/c, fridge and assembly of furniture. Throughout my son's stay, Moses was always ready to lend a hand at a moment's notice. Being a parent far on the west coast, I wholeheartedly appreciate Moses' generosity. Although I have never met Moses in person, he was always communicative and responsive to my inquiries. I glanced the few less than favorable reviews here. I just want to say that sometimes it was the landlord that imposes strict conditions. Being a property manager, it is hard to meet expectations of both tenants and landlords. Nice to see Moses is still out there scamming people. Paid him over $200 a while back for a unit he knew we couldn't get because the landlord had specific requirements (none of which Moses explained or warned us about... just alluded to not specifying where we worked). He will gladly take your fees and set you up to fail though! We had all the typical qualifications, paid Moses, then when we met with the landlord we ended up being shut down, hard. Decided to take our losses and go somewhere else, but this guy has the NERVE to text and harass me! Accused us of moving in without paying him his broker's fee. Really one of the worst scumbags of NYC. Not sure if it was racially related (we are POC) but just wanted to share my experience in case it's helpful to others! read more

Horrible experience with this group! When moving out, I asked to for 24 hours notice-even the night before would have been nice- and Moses would text me randomly in the middle of the day, while I was at work, telling me he had people stopping by that afternoon to tour. This left me with no time to clean up the apartment for it to show. Then upon move out, Moses got my forwarding address to send the security deposit, so I thought everything was going smoothly. After 17 days, I still hadn't gotten the deposit back. When my roommate and I texted him asking what was going on, he informed us that he was not returning our deposit because of an "unpaid ConEdison bill." First, a tenants personal bill is NOT a legal reason to withhold a deposit. Second, my ConEdison account was up to date, so I had no idea what he was talking about. After questioning this and taking pictures of my (non overdue) ConEdison account, he demanded PDFs and screenshots of my bill by email, which I was nice enough to provide immediately. This seemed to irritate him that my account was up to date and that I could prove it. He then called me and I asked him what was going on. I asked if he was planning to tell me about this non-existent overdue ConEdison bill, because I would have provided the proof immediately. He told me that he had known about this "issue" for a few days and started to get very emotional. I told him that I was just confused about the whole situation and in response, he began to yell at me into the phone that he has children and does not care about my issue....not really sure what that had to do with my security deposit...This is literally his job. I then asked if I should just deal with the landlord directly since he was getting so upset, and he yelled that yes I should and hung up on me in the middle of the conversation. I asked him to please provide in writing (he would constantly ask me to provide my information in writing) where it says that broker can withhold a tenant's security deposit because of an unpaid personal bill (which wasn't even true in my case). He texted me back "I'm not responding to you any more." I ended up having to get my security deposit back directly from the landlord, who actually apologized for the confusion. So, after paying a brokers fee, in the end, Moses did not do his job whatsoever, and acted in an incredibly immature and unprofessional manner. My thanks is to the landlord who acted maturely and professionally and sent the deposit back after a short conversation. Wish I could give him 0 stars, future renters- beware! read more

Working with Moses was the best. We looked at 40+ apartments (seriously, we wanted the perfect place) before we met him and the 2nd unit he showed us we signed for on the spot. Moses excelled at listening to our must haves, didn't waste our time with apts that didn't fit the bill. He was always on time and followed through on all communication. He was able to help us negotiate on the rent and was very generous towards us on the brokers fee. We've lived in the unit almost a year now, and he has been our liaison w management for the small issues that popped up- helped to get the Windows replaced and a leak in the bathroom above is fixed right, the first time we asked. You should know that he shows units in nice buildings with great management companies and he'll be reachable and helpful long after he's paid. You won't go wrong having Moses on your team. read more

Just noticed a scathing review by Aram about the Stoller Group. I had quite the opposite experience so I wanted to share it. They showed me a fantastic apartment about 2.5 years ago, I expressed keen interest, they committed to holding it for one day for me to give me time to secure my money orders and rental application package, and 24-hours later I had my dream apartment! I had my stuff together, they had theirs, and it was as quick and painless an experience as you can get in NY. Proof of my positive experience: I even referred a buddy of mine to them (who ended up renting a place nearby). Let's be honest: renting in NY is about as pleasant an experience as ordering breakfast from Kenny Shopsin. Expectations with brokers are generally as low as it gets, but they went above and beyond to help me with every last detail of my apartment. Unlike most seedy brokers in Manhattan, who you would not want to run into in a dark alley, much less do business with, Moses was a first class gentleman and a pleasure to work with throughout my move. He is articulate, intelligent, polite, highly presentable, friendly, and easy going. Moses might seem nice enough on the surface, but he's also very shrewd and can intimidate if he wants to. - Moses told me to tip the super even before I moved in. I did, but this super never actually ended up making a major fix to the apartment. -During the rental process, he kept poking into my ethnic background and made it very clear he'd keep showing the apartment until it was rented. - When I moved out, he made sarcastic, bitter comments about my movers. I used Moses Stoller about a year ago to rent an apartment, and then he was my landlord contact person for the year I was in the apartment. He advised me that he wouldn't give me back my full security deposit when I moved out, basing it on things that are not a renter's responsibility to pay for, such as having an exterminator visit the apartment and for a window that was broken before I moved into the apartment. I would not recommend using this broker, as he appears interested only in the landlord's interests and not the renter's interests. read more

After dealing with the likes of the CitiHabitats of the world and other rat-race real estate companies in NYC, my experience with Stoller Group was a breath of fresh air. My wife and I along with our two year old son were looking for an apartment. We were at our breaking point after dealing with numerous other companies which consistently ended disastrously. Then we stumbled upon Stoller Group. These guys must have showed us about 10 apartments(my wife is extremely picky and it's hard to find a dog-friendly apartment) until we discovered the perfect spot with a back patio. This would not have happened without the splendid services of this family-operated real estate company. That is the key that seems to separate this from the large cold and impersonal firms that treated us like a number and as if we were inconveniencing them with our search.
