Stix & Stones completed a remote hub conversion. It was a DT Swiss 240 front 5mm QR to QR15 thru axle conversion that involved ceramic bearings. Jake has done numerous conversions and has the specialized tools to complete such a task. A task that even my local bike shop, Encina Bicycles, cannot do on that pro level. First, when reviewing anything bike related I believe it is important to define what type of rider you are; as such, i am a CAT 1 MTB rider. I have competed in and around the Northern CA circuit for five years. I am the proud owner of a Jet 9, Orbea Opal and a Trek Fuel EX built up (by Jake) with full XTR. That said, on with the review. Jake Otsuka is, hands down, the BEST mountain bike wrench in the area. He has built my bikes, tuned my race rigs and kept me in the dirt for 5 years. Whether it is a quick derailleur tune, wheel true or balls out suspension overhaul Jake is the go to guy for me. This spring he rebuilt my fork, in my garage less than 24 hours before a race. When he found out i was racing the next day he ran through the bike, tuned me up (at no extra charge) and, due to his skills got me a third place. Jake is not limited to the mountain. He is currently building me a set of road wheels for winter training (Mavic Open Pros w/ Ultegra 28 hole hubs laced up 2 cross). On top of that, he is the only wrench allowed to touch my carbon. It was off his recommendation i bought an Orbea. I have not looked back since. His knowledge and informed opinion on MTB and road bikes is worth the cost of a visit. His prices are on point with all the other local shops. His service, professionalism and attitude are second to none. Jake's willingness to give advice and his no BS approach to bikes and "i know because i have probably broken it" approach to equipment is much appreciated. I plan to ask him to wrench for me @ the Boggs 24 race in 2011. In summation, Stix and Stones is worth every penny. In fact, more often than not, it is worth more. read more

Best bike fitting ever! Who knew a proper fit could make such an incredible difference? I called Jake at Stix and Stones because I was having some back pain when riding my new bike. I've been fitted on bikes before, but Jake's fitting was much more thorough than anything I'd experienced in the past. Jake was very patient and took his time examining every angle and took into account the type of riding I like to do as he made his adjustments. I'm a bit of bicycle junkie. I own five total including my wife's and my daughter's. Jake has worked on four of the five. He is honest, he didn't try to sell me anything on one of the bike's, just told me it was in good shape, didn't need anything. I would gladly pay a premium for the convenience of having my bikes worked on at my home or work location (I commute everyday by bicycle) but Jake's rates are competitive if not cheaper than most shops, and his work is impeccable. What a great business concept. Lower overhead, (his Toyota pickup is his shop) means he can offer great service and competitive prices. I feel like I have my own personal bike mechanic.
