One of the (many) curses of my life has been myopia. As a kid, it led to schoolyard bullies…read morehabitually calling me, "4 Eyes!" and challenging me to fight. I became a youthful "street fighter" (a bad one, let me hasten to add) because I basically had no choice but to fight or get knocked down (or, in my case, to fight and usually get knocked down, although I did win a few). As I got older, I contemplated contact lenses, but this seemed too much like a concession to vanity, as well as necessitating way too much effort and work (another curse in my life has been the curse of laziness, or...to wax Biblical..."sloth"). My optician during those years was Vincent Rizzo in Bernardsville. The last time I went to him was 20 years ago when my birth mother contacted me about meeting for the 1st time. The glasses I had at that point were outdated, unstylish, and...in my nervousness about not wanting to be perceived by the woman who had given me birth as a "dweeb," (vanity belatedly kicking in), I went to Rizzo's and bought myself a pair of glasses with a more modern, up-to-date style. However, I kept the older glasses to use when I was home by myself and watching TV. Well, fast forward...20 years later. Rizzo's in Bernardsville is gone, replaced by a psychic (as an aside, I've always maintained that if a psychic, a massage parlor or a "dollar store" opens in your neighborhood, your neighborhood is well into its swift decline. Just the other night, I had dinner with my oldest friend in Butler at a strip mall restaurant alongside a semi-rural stretch of Rt. 23. As we left, at about 10pm, a massage parlor 2 or 3 stores down was still open for business, it's orange neon light flashing "OPEN." I joked, "You think that's legitimate, or you think you can get a 'Happy Ending' there?" With a straight face, my friend replied, "No, I'm sure it's legitimate. There's always going to be somebody out here in the middle of nowhere who needs that crick in his neck or that pain in the lumbar region massaged out in the middle of the night by an experienced, professional masseuse." Yeah, sure. Anyway...) Recently, being typically careless (another curse in my life; my habitual carelessness), I was clearing out the remains of a lavish Italian meal I had treated myself to and inadvertently threw my spare pair of glasses out with the rest of the garbage (I had been watching TV while I ate and put the glasses down alongside the remnants of my meal when I was finished). Looking for those glasses the next day and realizing that they were gone for good (I wasn't about to go crawling through the dumpster looking for them), I was in a quandary. I do go semi-regularly to an ophthalmologist in South Orange for eye exams, but it has been decades since I've gotten a new pair of glasses (outside of an incipient cataract, my vision hasn't changed much, and the old prescription still works for me). Rizzo's in Bernardsville is long gone. What to do? I still have my primary pair of glasses, but I wanted to have an extra pair around, just in case. I called Gerald York, and they were very friendly and accommodating, answering all my questions. Yes, they could make a pair of glasses based solely on the pair I had now, without an eye examination or a copy of my last, decades-old prescription. So, the following day, I went to the store, which is located in the central (and quaint) shopping area of Basking Ridge. In a few minutes, they had the order in, and the glasses were ready a few days hence. I can't say the price of the glasses was cheap, but it wasn't as much as I thought it might be, and I feel more secure with this pair than I would with a pair from...say...Walmart. Parking in Basking Ridge can be hairy, but Gerald York has convenient parking in the back of the store. I've only had the 1 experience with them and am hoping I won't have need for any other glasses at least into the near future, but based on this 1 experience, I've found that they're friendly, efficient, and provide quick quality service. For your eyeglass needs, I can't think of anyone I could recommend more.

My family's new go to optometrist!…read more I yelped to find a glasses store that sells Asian fit frames, which is made to fit people with flatter nose bridge. Through yelp, I found this place and read some positive reviews of Dr. Lee. I made an appointment for myself and two kids and we all had our eyes examined by Dr. Lee. He's friendly and I never felt rushed through our appointments. He made sure to answer all questions and concerns. When our exam is done, we have the choice to get our prescriptions written and head out to another place to shop and shop here directly. Honestly, I knew I needed the Asians fit so I browsed around to see what they have on stocked. It didn't take too long for me to fit 'the one' pair of frame. It was light weight, cute and fits my face perfectly. The best part is the frames are reasonably priced compared to my other Asian fit frame I purchased in north jersey. 20% discounts are given to customers who doesn't have insurance for frames and yes, unfortunately that applies to us. I'm happy with my glasses and so is my son. For my daughter, there were no change in her eyesight exam which is great as she can still wear her existing pair. Their staff is friendly and really try to work with the patients/customers. I have seen them on providing costs effective and solutions if you have any financial concerns.

They have a wide selection of normal-looking frames, as well as more distinctive choices that the staff will be excited to show you. It's worth stopping in if you want some choices that you won't be able to find elsewhere. My left eye is -6, my right eye is -4, and I have strong astigmatisms in both eyes too. Mintze, my optician, set about looking for frames that had adequate support for the thicker parts of my lenses-to-be. When it came time to pick the coatings, she warned me that the blue light filters would really harm the transmission of the thicker parts of the lens. I appreciated this attention to detail. Really, you're coming to Madison Eyes because you want a neutral person's appraisal for how the frames look on you, and because you want greater selection. It's definitely not cheap to buy glasses here. But it's worth it for making the most of my sight, my most important sense. I'm posting photos of my top two choices from this year. A few weeks ago I went to my primary care physician and explained to him some of the things i was experiencing and he recommended i go to an ophthalmologist. Dont have the time to get into the difference between an optometrist and ophthalmologist, but a Google search will explain that for you. The ophthalmologist I saw diagnosed me with intermittent extropia...which had me concerned but I was told "dont worry about it for now" and was given a new prescription that i could take to get frames/lenses. I wont mentioned the opthalmologist's name (he is a highly rated Dr with a good reputation from what i know, I hold nothing against him, I just was looking for something more out of the visit personally)...Which brings me back to today...I went to see Dr Madeline Fernandez who was able to give me a follow up exam and consultation and talk to me further about the intermittent extropia diagnosis. I have been going to I to Eye since I was about 15 or so, from when the shop was at its prior location just down Broad St (the current office is in the old Lucky Jeans location if you are from the area and remember). I am in my early 40s now...so the office being in Town so long tells you that this business has the support and trust of the community...Primary reason i went to another doctor was based on the recommendation i got from my primary but going to Dr Fernandez to talk to her...i walked away feeling relieved, educated, and confident that my corrective lenses are going to address my problems. She took the time to explain prism lenses to me and progressives which I will be using going forward. The office and optical boutique has plenty of brands and styles to choose from. Arnell and another gentleman (I dont remember his name) helped me pick out my new frames. Arnell was sitting behind a desk and told the other associate "Why dont you show him the Tom Ford glasses with the clip"...Arnell has a great sense of style and knows what I like based off the frames I have now and historically have purchased...he even commented "these frames are very engineer like" which made me chuckle because it was cool that even though I havent been to the office in a few yrs, he still remembers my profession. I absolutely love my new frames and i am excited to get them. Dr Fernandez and Arnell are not only professional but great, kind people/human beings. They just have a calming/relaxed temperament. If you are originally from the area/Westfield you know how often businesses open and close in a short period of time...I am happy that I to Eye has stood the test of time and that I have place I can trust. Having great doctors (such as Dr Fernandez), a great mechanic, a great tailor, and a great go-to local restaurant...just give you a feeling that cant be taken for granted. This review for I to Eye is well overdue. If you need an eye exam or just want to get some stylish frames this is the place to visit!
