What brought us all the way to Kenner, was the promise of cheap crawfish. I had been doing my due diligence in researching what places had the cheapest crawfish in town and at $2.99/lb, this place was the big winner. I had also had it on my list because I wanted to try one of their Crabby Mary's. We were here on a Saturday night and there was a good size crowd at 7. We decided to start with some fried pickles, just because we both like them and we wanted something to munch on. We then got the boiled crawfish with sausage and potatoes and I got my Crabby Mary. The crawfish was pretty close to perfect: they were a good size (bigger than I had had at a previous spot) and while they could have been a tad spicier, they had a good flavor. The sausage also could have been spicier, but I enjoyed it as well. My Crabby Mary was pretty good. What it is is a bloody Mary topped with a fried soft shell crab, two fried shrimp and two hush puppies, all for $20. Honestly, as good as it was, I probably wouldn't rush to get it again. My suggestion would be- order this for lunch with a side and call it a day. I'm not sure if it was worth the $20. Our waitress was extremely nice and went above and beyond, especially when we thought we had a "sausage emergency" (we thought they had forgotten the sausage, so our waitress brought us more). I've always wondered if this place was any good and for years I would just drive past by hoping someone I personally know would have visited this place. Well, I happen to know someone who recommended us to go there. We did visit, and at first I was a little skeptical, until I got my first bite on a crab cake appetizer...it was delicious! Right on spot. I tried the fried calamari, but I'm just going to say that I wasn't too thrilled about it. It was a tad chewy. I also had their seafood angel hair pasta with oyster, and shrimp in a spicy creamy sauce; it was definitely on point with flavor and freshness. The restaurant it self had the typical feel of any seafood restaurant. The Lavendar Margarita was tasty, but weak. Ordered spinach dip. It wasn't good, came out cold. Ordered the crab stuffed jalapenos- those were good, Crawfish Boudreaux - didn't have any taste really; I think maybe because the noodles tasted as though they were warmed under hot water and not drained, and the Shrimp Feast - all shrimp except the grilled shrimp was cold and rubbery, we didn't try the stuffed shrimp to comment on that. When we went they had a couple of groups and it got VERY loud when one group was leaving (they were conversing with the other group that came in). Nice atmosphere for bar and grill - can bring entire family here. I ordered the "Lobster Luke;" whole lobster stuffed with a terrific crab meat stuffing and covered with a cajun-spiced Alfredo sauce. The platter included about five or six large, fried, catfish strips, and he ordered the coleslaw and onion rings as the side dishes. He said he really enjoyed his meal. I am not found of catfish, but I've had enough over my lifetime to make a comparison - I tried everything on his plate, including the catfish, and it was really good. First stop on our trip to New Orleans - came straight from the airport. Saw photos of the Crabby Mary (soft shell crab bloody mary) - it did not disappoint! Great little gem that's been in kenner since I was a child! My husband, whom is a picky eater that I can never get to eat out with me, loves to come here for their seafood pasta! Everyone is so friendly and accomadating. I enjoy their shrimp feast platter which is shrimp just about any way a southern woman would prepare it. I've never seen this server ever but it was very very unsanitary to see her touch her throat to talk then touch straws, food or whatever! I believe in equal opportunities but that's beyond unsanitary. I will not ever eat there again, my business there is over with! This is a locally owned and operated restaurant with fantastic food and great wait staff. Friends brought us here a few months ago for the 1st time and now I can't get enough. The place itself was nice and simple and we enjoyed the environment. Their version of a blooming onion was great. The fried shrimps rocked and they didn't skimp on the oysters, either. Looking at some of the other reviews it appears that this place is hit or miss - well, I guess I caught them on a "miss" night. The restaurant was moderately crowded - not packed, but busy. There were a few open tables. We were seated promptly and immediately noticed that we were sitting right under an AC vent. My dining companion was complaining of being uncomfortably cold (it was) and I asked that we be moved to another table. Apparently, this request took an act of congress to be approved. But eventually we were moved to a booth that was more comfortable (note: by this point we had already ordered). Apparently, and according to our waitress, a patron's request to change tables confuses the kitchen and delays the food (why? I have no idea. Food took forever to be served. Therefore I just go with what I am told). First Bottom Line: I'm not impressed with the service. Now for the food: We both had shrimp po-boys -I had a cup of gumbo with mine and she a cup of corn chowder with hers. Shrimp po-boys were passable. Not awful but far, far from the best. The shrimp were sort of cold - you know, like maybe the po-boys had been sitting out for a bit? The gumbo - petty bad. Had a very fishy taste - kind of unpleasant. Took a lot of Tabasco to render it eatable. Corn chowder was OK. We had also ordered a serving of something called cajun potatoes. Can't say if they were good or bad because we never got'em. Asked the waitress and were told that it would take another 20 minutes or so for them to be ready. Well, in my case, the blame is squarely on the cheap/impatient "elders" in our group of five who didn't want to wait more than 5 minutes to eat, or took one look at a menu and deemed it "too expensive." Every place we we GOING to eat at for dinner on a Sunday night had a wait (Mandinas - 45, Harbor - line was too long out the door so didn't even stop, Smittys - 25). Stingrays had no wait...that right there should have been the flashing warning, but the old guys didn't want to wait anymore (BTW, if we'd stayed at Mandina's, we'd be seated and eating GREAT FOOD already). Don't be fooled by the menu. It looks like they have a bunch of great seafood dishes, but none of them have any flavor! Four of us ate there, all ordering different things, and every single one of them was bland - which is a cardinal sin in the New Orleans area. Even worse, 2 out of the 4 were way too spicy, and there was no flavor whatsoever beneath the heat. Totally ridiculous. I only went there once, so maybe a different chef on a different shift would result in a different experience. So I must say I thought I would never come back to Stingrays but the restaurant has completely turned around their staffing issues!! Our server Melissa was so friendly and helpful. She was able to suggest everything from food picks to cool places to find new jewelry (her earrings were super cute!). This is the type of restaurant you expect in New Orleans and the South in general; a place that makes you feel like you are at home. The night manager Dave was equally friendly. Stingrays has a nice family friendly atmosphere with a fountain in the center. I had the fish platter with steamed broccoli and my husband had the chicken tender platter with the Cajun potatoes. My friend and I stopped at Stingray's Friday evening as we were in town for the Cowboys vs Saints game on Sunday. I love Fried Soft Shell Crabs, but usually most places are a little too heavy on the salt and I can't fully enjoy them the way I like. Before I ordered the Soft Shell Crab platter, I asked the waiter (who was amazing but I have forgotten his name...sorry) if they were already preseasoned. He wasn't sure but would ask the chef if they weren't already seasoned to be extra light on the salt. When my Soft Shell Crab Platter came out, it was PERECT!!! The Chef seasoned it just right for me and I devoured every single bite!!! Thank you for the extra care you took to prepare my meal just perfectly.
