We've been going here for years and it has always been consistently good. Good prices, good flavors, good service. I always get the Maine black bear ice cream or the cake batter! Not a ton of space--usually you have to stand outside to wait. But it is great for a grab and go! I also love their ice cream pies! Our only complaint this time around... there was a massive chunk of ice in my boyfriend's ice cream. He bit into it and it made a large crunch. This place is Just so poorly run. I feel bad for the kids they have working here, it's very clear an adult has never been in the building to teach them anything. The prices are good, probably to make up for the 45 minutes you'll be waiting for your ice cream while they stuff every single person into the tiny room to wait. I don't know who suggested that they should have someone just taking orders while one girl makes every single person's order one at a time, but it's quite possibly the slowest, worst ice cream place I've been to. Also, how have they not figured out how to put up a sign for what they're sold out of? I feel like that's the most basic idea?? But instead they'll just tell you they don't have it after you get up there to order, slowing things down even more. They also will get your order wrong but have 0 interest in fixing it because the one kid doing any work has too much to do. Loved ordering something, having them call out my order, and then taking a bite to find it was a completely wrong. Don't waste your time. Go somewhere else. read more

Stillwell's Ice cream is just FABULOUS. They sell lots and lots of flavors, and, once you've gotten your ice cream you can go and walk by Exeter river. Another thing is that the SIZES RUN HUGE!! So, don't just go ordering smalls for toddlers. (1 scoop there=2-3 scoops at home!!!) So, to sum it all up, Stillwells is an AMAZING ice cream shop that sells AMAZING flavors. While I was astonished from moving into Exeter and being greeted with the cheap and delicious ice cream, the lack of environmental awareness rivals trash policies in the depths of New York City. Styrofoam cups are terrible, and while Stillwells has started to use paper cups, it comes at a fee as if they are charging consumers for the privilege of being environmentally friendly. I will gladly be a paying customer, should we get rid of styrofoam cups. read more

I waited outside of the ice cream shop for 30 minutes at the back of a line. Eventually, 30 minutes after the store was supposed to be open, someone decided to show up. She let a dog inside of a food place which was disgusting because I am allergic and the dog had just thrown up all over the sidewalk, and I stayed waiting outside for another 20 minutes before giving up and leaving. The workers are all so friendly and welcoming to every single customer who walked in the shop. Don't feel rushed choosing your flavors as the workers are all very willing to give you samples for you to taste. Another year has passed with no real progress on the Styrofoam cup situation. Yes,you can pay extra for a paper cup, but only when they have them. Besides that, this option isn't posted well enough for most customers to know it exists. If the owner can't switch to using paper cups exclusively (why not?), then she should at least have her employees ask customers if they want paper or foam---like register clerks do at supermarkets with paper and plastic bags. This would remind people that it's an option. The parade of foam cups blowing around Exeter speak for themselves, but the owner says this has nothing to do with her. If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Can't recommend. read more

As good as the ice cream is, the service is marginal at best and the fact that after encouraging not to, they still use styrofoam cups is most irresponsible. Very good ice cream with many flavors and friendly scoopers. Hand packed pints or quarts to take home are the way-to-go value-wise. Totally Turtle is a fave flav (choc covered cashews with caramel swirls in caramel ice cream,) and if it's not currently in stock, ask that they keep it on the regular board so we can all enjoy it any tme. Great to place grab a Richardson's Ice Cream or Italian Ice. The owners, who are often working behind the counter are incredibly nice. The portions are very generous. Some of the teenaged staff have a bit of an attitude on them, but that's every ice cream stand. Note to people with nut allergies: When they add sprinkles on cones, they stick the ice cream directly into the container of sprinkles. This means that the sprinkles have obviously been contaminated, since they sell nut-flavored ice creams. (You'd think that the staff might have considered that this was a dumb idea, but apparently not.) Update: I received a PM from the owner. Apparently their procedures re: nuts are much more careful than they appear. They store their nut-flavored ice creams separately from the rest, and if you ask, they'll sterilize the scoop and give you fresh, uncontaminated sprinkles from the boxes under the counter. read more

This is a great ice cream shop! They have a huge selection of flavors, and most importantly, in my book, is that everything is SUPER affordable. You can get a smaller size cone (which is still a big portion) for just a couple bucks. I am really surprised that the business could keep prices so low while being right on the downtown Exeter strip. The people that work there are really nice and helpful as well.
