I live a half an hour away from a grocery store, so I can't just run over and replace these things. Completely unacceptable. From now on the only thing I'll buy here is non-perishable stuff they put on significant discount. When I called and spoke to a customer service representative, the only response I got was "OK I'll let them know". Looks like I'll be going to the Hannaford up the street from now on.

The quality drop over the past year is too significant even if a business is trying to downscale and cut costs during trying times. There is almost nothing on the menu that there used to be: focaccia, fresh sandwiches with quality ingredients/substance. The prices while always high are now completely unjustified for the quality and basic level of food they are offering. The choices on the menu are strange and some of the choices are not very edible. But the worst thing of all, as someone who loves nothing more than going to coffee shops and forming relationships with the people who run and work in these treasured small businesses, is that there is simply no soul in this place. No appetite to serve the customer in a way that feels positive, or helpful, or caring beyond the transaction. The attitude is: bare minimum, transaction, next order. No consideration for offering any of the basics that accompany a meal or coffee anywhere in the world. I hate to say this but when you're not into something you do it shows and what's the point if the customer and the product come last? Even if that's not the intention, that's how it comes across, strongly. Perhaps the business can stick to coffee and adopt a take away only model. So when I saw one opening in Kingston almost a decade ago I just shrugged and kept going. After learning Dianne Reeder's story you realize this isn't your ordinary candy store. Yes they have over 400 kinds of candy you can buy in bulk and the store has your typical kitschy trinkets but if you look deeper it's where you find Diane's passion and empathy for others. She just wants to make your day a little easier and for you to leave happier than you came. Certainly this isn't hard when you're scooping Janes Ice cream and serving vegan homemade soft serve using Fruition chocolate and coconut milk. Even this is fairly common place in a world over run by NYC transplants expecting everything to be homemade and gluten free. Where Dianne is different, is her commitment to community. In 2005, Diane was the winner of the Microsoft/Bill Gates Start Something Amazing Award (a program honoring the unique and inspiring ways that people use Microsoft related technology to pursue their everyday passions) for her work bringing attention to food insecurity. Her passion for cooking and her desire to help others led her to find a nonprofit organization called The Queens Galley in Kingston. The work she did with the Kingston Farmers Market was instrumental in getting them to accept food stamps. Diane's mission to have people come together and break bread in dignity has now spread across the country. Her commitment even landed her a diner at the Whitehouse with President Obama. To add to her resume she graduated the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park while raising 3 kids and running the candy bar. But let's get to the point.
