Just like how City of Schenectady is getting a total makeover, so did this gas station. The gas station prior was I believe a gulf that looked old and no character. The renovated gas station is large, spacious and comes with a cafe/convenience store. I didn't get a chance to try the food here but I'll definitely be back to give it a shot as I see some positive reviews. The gas price is one of the least expensive in the area. If I'm around, I don't mind filling my gas here like I did today

In the mood for a lunchtime Saturday sandwich, I decided the Co-Op would fit the bill. I had a hankering for an Italian mixed sub, gave some specific instructions, and they delivered. I can be a little picky when it comes to my sandwiches; I like my deli meat thinly sliced, sandwiches just taste better that way to these taste buds?! So this time, I wanted thinly sliced ham, pepperoni, and salami, with red onion, shredded lettuce, and that good good red wine viniagtette, on a sub roll. All the ratios addeded up in my book; the thinly sliced meat complimenting the healthy squeeze of the red wine vinaigrette dressing, all while not making the bread soggy -- that's key. Nothing worse than soggy bread, IMHO. So in closing, I will be back for this sandwich and I hope it's this perfect every time!!

There's plenty we found appealing about the experience, from the clean and spacious aisles and clear labels to the full range of goods we weren't sure we would find, including bakery, deli, produce, and pet foods. Staff at checkout was energetically friendly and I left thinking that I wouldn't mind going back at all. There's limited parking directly in front of the shop but more across the road. Apparently the co-op was established some 80 years ago and has gone through several transformations. I have a soft spot for local businesses and independent grocers, so here's hoping they stay open for many more years.

At checkout, I learned that they are increasing the number of self check out lanes at this store. I am not a fan of self check out for several reasons including less people need to be employed.

I also like their hot food section. Picked up some meatloaf and it is fantastic especially for the price. The sushi is fresh and almost as good as the restaurants. The layout is nice and easy to find things. The produce section is extensive and probably the closest that comes to HEB. Depending in what I need this is a great place. And there are more in the area since they took over all the closed ShopRite stores.

I get the idea that reducing the number of other grocery stores competing with you in an area…read moretheoretically improves your business. So it was not surprising to me that Price Chopper/Market 32 grabbed the defunct Shop Rites in the area. But having so many in one area takes away from all of them. I've got 2 Market 32's competing for my business on Western Avenue - neither one is fully staffed as it is. This new Market 32 at 1730 Central Avenue is competing with a nearby Price Chopper at 1892 Central Avenue. I'd be willing to bet these stores consolidate into one at some point in the near future. Sorry, having all these stores is not the way to get my business. Here's some things to consider addressing if you want that: - None of these stores have "baskets for easy shopping," only carts. If I only want a few items, I'd like a basket, not a cart. - Competitive prices - the few loss leaders here were okay and good bargains, otherwise not. - How about low-sodium deli product options, like some other local grocery store chains provide? - Label the produce - Absolutely nothing except lettuce was labeled in any way in the greens section. I hope you can tell chard, collards, and kale apart. There were no signs under the products, and at least the chard had no tags on them identifying them by item or 4-digit code. More on that below. - Have someone at the seafood counter. By the way, the salmon fillets were dry and cracked. - Have bagels that actually look like bagels, not mis-shapen, flat, and burnt excuses for bagels. Some of them looked more like the 5 pound weights I put on my barbell. For a grocery store chain that has been known for good quality bagels, these were abysmal. - Have user-friendly checkout kiosks. These get upset if you put your empty grocery bag on the counter before scanning items. For items you need to look up, instead of getting a convenient keypad, you get a list of 6 to 8 likely items. If what you have isn't on the list, you MIGHT get to a digital keypad to enter words or a code. Now about that chard: The scanner/electric eye did not recognize the item, so I got a pop-up list of things like spinach and kale, but no chard. When I tapped on the button for not listed, I got a "please wait" message, and then nothing happened. I eventually had to call for an attendant (who had to serve 2 people ahead of me, by the way), who had to use an authorized bypass to bring up a greens menu which actually included chard. This was not a good experience at all. There's several other Market 32s in the area I'd rather visit. Honestly, though, I'd actually drive the 45 minutes to the next closest Shop Rite than to go back to this store Shop-Rite-Turned-Market-32.

A few weeks ago, I was surprised to find they were selling fresh lychees. I was skeptical. Lychees for sale and I'm not in Chinatown? They weren't quite ripe yet. I bought one carton. In hindsight, I should have bought at least two. Previously, I've only purchased lychees in any of NYC's Chinatowns and they were usually perfectly ripe or slightly past due. So I gave these new lychees a few days. They ripened and they were delicious. A week later the lychees were all gone but fresh figs were for sale. I haven't eaten figs in years so I snapped some up. There were some super ripe ones in the carton which I ate right away. Others are still ripening so I can enjoy them over time. When I went back a week later, the supply at the store has sold out. The small yellow watermelons were great, too. Now, there are varieties of Rainier or Queen Anne cherries available. They're almost always pricey no matter where you buy them. Trader Joe's gives you a choice. The larger variety costs a dollar more. I went for the smaller ones which were wonderful. I saved a dollar and since they're very ripe I'm going to turn some of them into jam. As always, the staff is friendly and very helpful. It's clean, inviting and well stocked. I was at the Co-op the next day. A variety of their breads are located in a shelf display across the aisle from all the other breads. I saw sandwich rolls, French baguettes, plain sourdough, three seeds sourdough, whole wheat sourdough, plain challah, everything topped challah, and a couple of variations that I don't recall. Some of the loaves are also available in half-loaf sizes. I purchased a loaf of 3 Seed Sourdough ($8.69) and a loaf of Everything topped Challah ($7.29). Both are excellent in their own right. The 3 seeds on the sourdough are organic dry roasted pumpkin, organic dry roasted sunflower, and organic golden flax seeds. Anicca makes a point of stating that they make every attempt to obtain all their ingredients within 200 miles of the Troy bakery. The sourdough has a nice chewy crust and a decent sour flavor. The challah has a softer crust than the sourdough, just a bit of sweetness and a slightly lighter colored crumb. The challah is also double bagged for some reason. The loaf is placed in a plastic bag before it is placed in the outer paper bag. Maybe that was to protect the everything topping? If you visit their web page https://aniccabakery.com/ you will learn that you can order online and pickup your order at Alias Coffee Shop in Troy. You may also notice that their web page does not mention all the varieties of bread that I saw at the Co-op and shows a more limited production schedule. Maybe their web page is just not up to date. Another issue I ran into was knowing whether the bread was fresh. Glancing at the information on the label of my two choices, I saw that the sourdough was labeled as "Date Baked on10/29/25" (GREAT! That was today), while the challah was labeled as "Date Baked 10/30/25." WAIT!!! How can that be? 10/30/25 is not until TOMORROW!!! I checked several other packages and found that all the packages of challah were labeled with tomorrow's date. As an aside, does that mean I wouldn't be able to eat the challah until tomorrow? LOL Or better yet, if I eat it today does that mean the carbs don't exist yet? Still, LOL. In any event, a Co-op employee noticed my confusion and insisted on informing management while wondering if this meant the sourdough could have actually been sitting on the shelf since 10/28/25. Today or not, but probably tomorrow also, both breads were excellent. I'm looking forward to trying a whole wheat sourdough.
