We finally made it to this local grocery store and were pleasantly surprised. The emphasis is definitely on 'local,' and we ended up with a surprise find, a candi onion which is apparently locally produced and neither of us had even heard of. There's plenty we found appealing about the experience, from the clean and spacious aisles and clear labels to the full range of goods we weren't sure we would find, including bakery, deli, produce, and pet foods. Staff at checkout was energetically friendly and I left thinking that I wouldn't mind going back at all. There's limited parking directly in front of the shop but more across the road. Apparently the co-op was established some 80 years ago and has gone through several transformations. I have a soft spot for local businesses and independent grocers, so here's hoping they stay open for many more years. read more

I travel from Clifton Park to buy meat, poultry and seafood from The Co-Op. It is hard to beat their specials. I am 76 years old now and I remember going to the Co-Op from Rotterdam with my mother every week. It remains one of my favorite markets with a very friendly and helpful staff. read more

The crew behind this deli counter is at is again, this time delivering with a fantastic Italian mix sub. In the mood for a lunchtime Saturday sandwich, I decided the Co-Op would fit the bill. I had a hankering for an Italian mixed sub, gave some specific instructions, and they delivered. I can be a little picky when it comes to my sandwiches; I like my deli meat thinly sliced, sandwiches just taste better that way to these taste buds?! So this time, I wanted thinly sliced ham, pepperoni, and salami, with red onion, shredded lettuce, and that good good red wine viniagtette, on a sub roll. All the ratios addeded up in my book; the thinly sliced meat complimenting the healthy squeeze of the red wine vinaigrette dressing, all while not making the bread soggy -- that's key. Nothing worse than soggy bread, IMHO. So in closing, I will be back for this sandwich and I hope it's this perfect every time!! read more

I want for more from this place! I want friendlier staff, some are great, others are really off-putting. Do they understand that people don't HAVE to shop there, given their prices and selection? Prices on meats are what kept me going back, but now I'm a vegetarian so I only run in for the occasional few items. I prefer the quick in and out here to going to a major grocery store. Seems the sales/specials years ago were better, too. Now I rarely buy anything that has a markdown so not sure the value or "membership". Highlights: they carry Perreca bread and tomato pie, deli sandwiches made to order have always been good. read more

This is easily one of my favorite places in the entire capital region. I love the Niskayuna food co-op. It is a great little grocery store and has tons of fresh unexpected options at lunchtime and their produce is pretty amazing as well. It is a very small fee to buy one share of their stock to join up and it is worth it to get their sales. It is much cheaper than other local co-ops and in my opinion this one is amazing anyway. I go here pretty often on my lunch break,sometimes to get lunch but also just to browse at times, they even have a selection of holiday candy for each season and they also have a lot of fair trade and specialty chocolate. If you are in this area, they are definitely worth checking out, I think you would really enjoy it. Their customer service is also exceptional. read more

WAY too overpriced for what they offer. Their weekly specials never seem to change week to week. Their bakery is always near empty. I swear they only make 3 bagels for each variety, and their cookies are always just chocolate chip or some walnut-type of thing. Salted caramel is NEVER available anytime of the day I decide to stop in there. I ask the person schlepping the cookies and I'm either told they haven't been made yet or are already sold out. My kids aren't happy. Whatever frozen foods are on special never seem to be re-stocked once they sell out that week. Every week I go in there I'm given yet another reason to stop coming. Get it together, guys! And BTW You don't need to add a cafe to bring in customers. Just give the public good prices. No room for it anyway. read more

We absolutely love the co-op and the variety it brings to the community! I especially love the amount of ready to go options and prepared food ready to cook. The baked section is the best around the area and the butchers are so nice! I like being able to try out foods from other local businesses that are featured throughout the store. I'm re-evaluating the Co-Op in the face of the rapidly changing Capital Region grocery market, with Trader Joe's opening this weekend and a Whole Foods on the way. I suspect I've been unfairly reacting to the small space inside the Nisky Co-Op; I prefer brighter and airier and less crowded places to shop, particularly for groceries. But having tried the Co-Op for a number of quick errands, the apparently smaller stock is a bit of a smokescreen, in that the nearby bigger stores (Shop Rite, lookin' at you) simply have more gigantic piles of the same items filling up the bulk of the store, and nine brands of some things where a few choices will do. The Co-Op is not all the way there yet, but you can tell they're improving their brands, getting more local options, and doing what they can in the limited space to freshen things up. The produce department in its current size has quality stuff but it's never going to have the variety the bigger stores nearby has. It's still not one-stop shopping for me, and the small carts and spaces require a multiple-trips-per-week shopping style which is not convenient (and wastes car time/gas). But it's much higher quality per square foot than the other nearby stores. Now, with Trader Joe's a distant 20 minutes plus away, and Whole Foods planned for about the same distance, and the expensive The Fresh Market 25 minutes away, there's going to be both competition on the quality front and yet a continuing advantage for the Co-Op among locals of being more convenient. If the Co-Op can continue to work on upgrading its stock and orientation for depth over breadth and the unusual over the mundane and the local over the megafood labels and maybe, we hope, natural and organic over processed, I think it has a shot at being relevant moving forward. Some of these characteristics are more of a wish list at this point, to be sure. But I think my previous characterization of the Coop as a big convenience store was a bit off. It's a tiny grocery store, but it's a concentrated grocery store, and as such it's worth it for us to patronize a bit more than we have been. I will say I think stocking up on staples may require a trip elsewhere, but if one is shopping for key ingredients for meals, the Coop is as good as or better than the neighboring grocery stores about 75% of the time. We're bumping it up a star for now, are going to give it more business, and I'll update later as we see how things go. read more

This is a charming little store with a remarkable selection of products, especially given its tiny footprint. But they have a long variety of products from Oscar's Smokehouse, a handful of fanciful yogurts, grassfed meats, and on Friday's you can find loaves of challah from New Mt. Pleasant Bakery. The product mix is a blend of the everyday and the extraordinary, but it is far from precious. That said, nobody is shopping here for the value. It's not Whole Foods expensive, but most products here you could probably find for less elsewhere. Of course, there are those foods that the Nisky Co-op carries which are hard to find anywhere else. And I find the shopping experience here to be far more pleasant that roaming the endless aisles in a massive supermarket. I would like to think I'd shop here more if I lived closer. But for the most part I'm a Nisky Co-op tourist, occasionally picking up a treat or two when I'm in the area. read more

I purchased a large turkey & ham Sub sandwich recently at the deli counter and was very disappointed with it, the sub roll was very dry and stale and tasted awful, the provolone cheese didn't seem like provolone cheese it was very soft and tasted terrible. I'm a member there and I didn't even get a member discount with my card. They are very expensive. I would rather shop at Aldi. read more

Have to downgrade severely due to there extremely high prices on most items not including their great deli and meat department. The prices have increased drastically in the last year and I'm not really sure why. One day I priced a pound of butter here and it was almost $5 and not on sale. For that price I might as well go across the street to Stewart's which is a convenience store and gas station an pay less which is ridiculous.They do carry a lot of local products which is great but they carry so many specialty and high end local products that there is no longer any reasonably priced products for people shopping on a budget. I think other people have caught on to the higher price trend of this store as they claimed that sales are slipping in the Schenectady gazette . I use to be able to do grocery shopping here but now just shop the deli and meat department as those departments seemed less affected by their price hike and then buy my other groceries at less costly grocery stores for the basics. I also don't like the changes of no longer offering triple coupons on a single item if you spend ten dollars, they had this as a member perk for years and kind of wonder what the perk of being a member is now. Lastly I read in one of the local papers they were thinking of making the membership a yearly fee which is the WORST decision they could make. If your sales are slipping already don't charge people more money just to have you loyalty card to shop there. I fear that if they don't do something at this store to drive down prices and become more competitive they will be left behind and forced to close in the already crowded grocery choices of the area. read more

This should not be called a co-op in practice, but a co-op in theory. It's basically a Stop-N-Shop with a disguise to lure heavy-walleted Niskayuna-ites inside. Very few organic options, bulk-foods don't exist, and there's barely a focus on local food. Really sad. That being said, it's convenient, people are nice, and they carry my favorite hummus. read more

Its got a good selection of things you probably wont find in your regular grocery store. They have a generally better selection of things that are organic or lacking a million ingredients. I'm probably just thrilled that I found sweet tea that doesn't have artifical flavoring in it there. Its kind of pricey, and I've been in there a few times and they haven't had what I wanted. This review is more about managers. I stopped by to see if they would be willing to donate to a health fair I was putting on. The employees have me an enthusiastic yes and have me the contact information for the manager. I was told she would give me a step by step of what to do. 4 unreturned phone calls and 3 visits to the store later, I never received a call. I give Nisky Co-Op five stars because they're always improving by adding more local vendors and vegetarian grocery and frozen items. In addition, the staff members are always available, helpful and friendly. While perusing the ice cream section one day, a man stocking the freezer told me of a sale poster he was just preparing and I appreciated having the heads up. On weekdays there's a man selling delicious hot vegetarian Indian selections, a nice way to take out lunch or dinner. I've been a Co-Op member for decades and this is a great neighborhood grocer when you don't want to do the large supermarket shopping. read more

This place is the next best thing in Niskayuna right behind their lacrosse program. The sandwiches on Mastriani rolls and boarshead meat are great! Great selection of very tasty soups daily. They have a solid selection of micro brews (Browns and Ommegang). I've only spoken about the deli and brews, the rest of the store has a lot of cool local products. It really has an old school market vibe. The employees are always friendly and has such a neighborhood market charm. Love this place! read more

Really just a convenience store. Not very much organic food, and almost nothing local. Prices are high and the selection overall is limited. Take caution with the prepared food - I know people who had food poison from here. Customer service is spotty - many employees are quite unfriendly. Good for a quick stop for necessities if you don't want to go to a full grocery store, but that's about it. Though they do have some good desserts! For beer, there's a full beverage center a few blocks away, and there's a Hannaford right down Balltown. (and be sure to have a NY state license, or they won't sell you alcohol) read more

This place has both the friendliest staff and the friendliest shoppers in town. Because it is somewhat small, it is easy to navigate for seniors. It also caters to the little ones by having baby shopping carts for them. Questions are answered quickly and easily, and, if they don't have a product you want, they will order it for you! Nice neighborhood market with a host of unique products-glass bottle milk (local), locally baked pies, great bakery and deli. Loved the loaded hamburgers! On Tuesdays, Chaz is on site sharpening EVERYTHING you could need to be sharpened-just bring it to him. Recently, I had the bakery create a platter for me to bring to a work meeting and it was excellent in price, quantity and quality. I am a service member with a federal id AND an out of state drivers license. They still won't sell me beer. They blame it on the "law" since their little operation cannot buy an electronic license/id verification. Since when did it become the law to have to swipe id's to buy beer? The liquor mart next door has never done this. Neither has any other store I have been in. I think they might be breaking the law by over enforcing it! read more
