Very nice Italian deli, with a decent selection of Italian groceries as well. Food was great; hot lasagna with meatballs for less than $10. Really good. You can tell this place is worth a visit because the door was revolving with all the people coming in to grab lunch. Tables to sit at. What I was most impressed with, beyond the tasty food, was how great the service was. Attentive, kind, considerate. Really nice to experience, especially for us out-of-towners. I'd been looking for a deli to call "my regular place" since moving up to the Albany area a while back. There's several closer to me, but it would be tough to find one better. During busier times, it can be a bit of a traffic jam among the folks waiting to place their order and those waiting for it to be filled, but with as many as 6 behind the counters, the flow is actually pretty good.. I watched as every ingredient on my Italian sub was sliced to order, made exactly as I wanted, and made really well. Had I been hungrier, I would have ordered a side of antipasto similar to the ones I saw others getting. Forget what the national donut chain says... So Pellegrino's has always been known for their sandwiches but it's their catering services that blew me away. We had a death in the family in November and in addition to all of the other arrangements that need to be done I had to find food for after the memorial. You really don't have much notice when you have to plan something like this so I started calling around. After mixed success with a few other caterers I called Pellegrino's. I don't know who the man I spoke with was but he helped me figure out how much food I needed instead of trying to oversell me. Pellegrinos has great food, super service and the place is kept immaculate. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they move briskly to keep patrons from waiting for their food. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of Italian delis in the Capital District, and this place stands out for their impressive retail section - bigger than any other we've been to in the District. The Italian sub is good but honestly, it's hard for me to tell these Italian subs from different delis apart, and the one at Pelligrino doesn't seem to me distinct from many others. So it's fair to say that the main draw here for me is the retail goods rather than their Italian sub. read more

I can remember my first sub. The lovely bread (a little crunch on the outside, nice and soft inside), the crunchy lettuce, tomatoes that taste like tomatoes....meat sliced just so. Yes, it was delicious. and Pellegrino's was just like my first sub sandwich. Perfect. Many sub joints do not slice the meats after you order. Choices of sandwiches are left to your imagination, anything you can think of. The menu offers multiple cheese options as well. The store itself was on the verge of getting crowded the Saturday morning we visited. So many people seemed to be friends of the staff. Many of the people in line also seemed to know each other. A neighborhood store that sells Boar's Head meats and cheeses. Other cheeses can be grated and packaged on request. Parking lot was adequate for the store. There were 3 tables available if you wish to "dine in" with plenty of social distancing room. The menu also offers dinners to go. One of these days, I may have to entertain letting them cook my dinner. read more

Having heard the legend of their Italian assorted subs, I decided to order one for my wife and I to share during our "lock down." In addition, I purchased one of their antipasti salads and a bag of chips. Ordering on the phone was easy, and when I got there my food was ready. I would love to explore the store but due to the social distancing rules and such I just got in and got out. First off, my wife and I split a 12" sub but each half was plenty to satisfy us. The meats were flavorful and I really enjoyed their assertive vinegar dressing. On the negative side, they completely cut through the sub roll making a top and bottom instead of just slicing along the side. That, combined with the aforementioned dressing, allowed the sub to become less and less cohesive as I ate it. My wife told me her's was very wet (she had mayo too). I don't like it when subs fall apart, but I can't exactly say how long the sandwiches were sitting for us to get with the dressing and mayo soaking in. The salad was very good. There wasn't a tremendous amount of meat or cheese and the lettuce was boring iceburg, but on the plus they included giardiniera which I love and that gave it a really assertive, acidic kick. But, the dressing is served in a cup on the side should you want to swap it for something else. The prices were fine and they were extremely friendly. They won't replace my favorite sub shop but they are a good place to go and certainly better than the chains that are all over. Hopefully when this is all over I can check out their Italian groceries. read more

Pellegrino's Imports has been a long time favorite going back to their previous location on lower Madison Ave in Albany where I first started patronizing this Italian import store & deli in the late '70s. Then to their location on Central Ave and now their present location on further west on Central Ave in Colonie. The owner is Benny Anastasio, second generation of this Albany family owned business. Great selection of Italian & Greek imported products from antipasto to ziti. Full grocery selection and a full service deli. Purveyor of Boar's Head meats & cheese. Also offer their own spaghetti sauce, olive oil, sausage, also barrels of dried beans & olives, prepared salads & meals, sandwiches, soups, pastas, Prinzo's bread &rolls, pizza doughs & all the toppings, and many kinds of imported cheeses. But the most important item they offer is their AAA service. They treat their customers like family. They can meet all your catering needs. I must have driven right past Pellegrino's more times than I can count. But I've never, ever noticed it before. In a region full of great Italian markets, somehow this one was entirely off my radar. I'm glad to report, that is no longer the case. My stop here was driven by a desire to find some homemade Italian sausages and meatballs. We had some old friends visiting from the west coast, and this kind of everyday fare is quite special for them. It's my son who is the meatball aficionado. So far, his favorite come from an Italian market in Providence, Rhode Island. And my mother brings them with her on ice, whenever she comes up for a visit. But there are times in between when we run out of meatballs. Therefore, it's important to have a local option. We've been looking for a while, but still had not found an adequate substitute. But it seems that Pellegrino's may be the new local meatball of record. It's tender and has some seriously deep flavor, so I'm on board too. The sweet Italian sausage isn't half bad either. Future visits will definitely be in order, and I hope this positive first impression ultimately results in a fifth star as the market continues to surprise and delight me with its excellent products and friendly service. read more

Pellegrino is an OK place. I've been there a few times. They usually have long lines at lunch and is very busy. Needless to say the food is good and the staff friendly, but I'm kind of put off when I see some browned lettuce in the salad or I taste too much water in the soup. Watering soup to extend it is the biggest trick in the restaurant deli business and it's probably the most dangerous and dumb to the brand. It's insulting to ones intelligence also. It's almost as if they are saying no, they won't figure out that we're extending the soup by putting extra water in it will they? Needless to say the broth doesn't taste too good and the chicken or vegetables are rendered flavorless. The Goddess of Fire wishes to report that heaven is actually located at 1197 Central Avenue, not far from the Moon and the Stars. Yes, heaven is a deli. The sandwiches are divine- prepared to order while you wait by a bunch of really nice cute guys - gotta love that! Try the Italian Mix - spicy and rich. Once they get to know you it's a time-saver to order ahead, FYI. They do party platters, too. The deli has lots of dry beans and lentils, bins of olives, prepared salads and lovely imported cheeses. I always get my Parm there, grated, and they know to package up the rinds for me so I can use it in soups. Their house made summer sausage is fabulous, and only available for a short time - loaded with garlic - try some on the grill! The grocery section is well stocked with cured meats, frozen raviolis, canned tomatoes, pastas, coffee, anchovies, roasted red peppers, and other delights.
