Tried one of the 12" cold cut sandwiches. It's a build your own with decent selection of meats, toppings, and condiments. Guy behind the counter was friendly, and loaded up my sandwich. Bread was nice and soft. I plan to try one of their hot subs next. Great experience overall. read more

Wow. People are tough. Fred's is my literal go to for meats. I have picky dogs and their 10lb. ground beef specials are awesome (I have St. Bernards and they're surprisingly picky). But the brisket burgers that I convert in four sliders or two smash burgers are the best in town. When the Brazilian sirloin or Short ribs goes on, I load up. Service is terrific. I don't know what people are talking about, but maybe it's because I buy in bulk that they're nicer to me? Idk. Ribs are solid as well. Deli meats are priced very reasonably. I have no idea where people are shopping, but the prices are terrific. This is the only place I'll buy steaks. read more

We love Fred's especially in the summer months. The produce is always great & from local farms. You cannot beat the quality of the meats. They have an awesome selection of fresh made subs and sandwiches. Also a lot of pre made salads and meals. Before I get into my person beef with these purveyors of fine meats, allow me to state up front: the product is top notch in both flavor and quality. The Wagyu beef strip graded 8-9 we enjoyed last night was superlative. Sous vide prep finished on the grill for a final medium rare sear. Can't beat it for a luxurious birthday dinner treat and a remarkable sale price this week. Additionally I pre-ordered a quality pack #1 because the #6 with dry aged beef was sold out for at least 30 more days. The Quality Pack # 1 consists of 4 Delmonico steaks (16 oz each), 4 strip steaks (16 oz. each) and four tenderloin filets (8 oz each.) These sizes and quantities are specified on their website under the Quality Pack items that are being offered. The price for #1 is $239. When I returned home I opened the Quality packs. Unfortunately I discovered the sizes of the cuts were all over the place. Not one of the strip steaks came close to 16 oz, with the largest being 10 oz. An additional small 5th strip was added to bring up the weight and was child sized. The filets ranged from 5.5 oz to 10.5 oz. The Delmonicos were fine. My expectation for the other cuts were that the advertised sizes are going to be what you get. Also, such radically different sizes affects cooking times as well. I called the store in Slingerlands and was assured they would replace the meat free of charge. This statement lead me to believe a few different things in their effort to rectify the problem. This involved an additional hour of afternoon drive time (30 minutes each way) prior to my dinner prep, plus the time at the store. So, I thought for my inconvenience... I met with manager and co-owner David at the shop. Each new cut was weighed in front of me and I was asked if it was satisfactory. The Delmonicos I first received were fine and took them back. Then new strip steaks were weighed out at 16 oz each and were now good. Then came the tenderloins. I was told it is nearly impossible to get exact weights for the filets due to the nature of whole tenderloin. This statement was utter nonsense as I've broken down many whole tenderloins over the years. Also, premium butchers should be able to achieve this as does any quality restaurant monitoring portion control. Afterall, their ad does not say "Total weight of 32 oz." but rather "8 oz. each." And if it takes several tenderloins to achieve this because of the tapering shape, so be it, and sell the odd pieces for other uses such as stir fry, kebobs, or smaller portions for those not wanting 8 oz., but do not include them in the quality pack. After all was said and done, I was handed back the new packages along with David saying "I'm sorry for any confusion." WHAT? What confusion? THAT statement is why I'm writing this review. He stated this more than once. I corrected him and said there was a mistake, not any confusion. "Your ad is clear." This shirking of owning responsibility appears to be endemic with younger business people who enjoy sidestepping an institutional issue, leaving the problem as something the customer had a hand in and shares. Also, at no time was anything said like "We'd like to do something for you for the inconvenience and the time you took to come back here." No coupon. No discounting. No future incentive to return. No product. It wasn't until I mentioned that I was under the impression that something would be done to mitigate my trouble that I was offered four of their specialty hamburgers. I accepted this gesture but really, you feel like "that person" for even having to ask. I mentioned this to a friend who spent many years as a pastry chef in a fine dining restaurant in Boston and he was appalled by the attitude at Fred the Butcher and said it was enough for him not to trust this product package or even return. His take was that the pack must be a case leftover assemblage of odd sized bits and that most customers wouldn't go through the trouble I did once they got home. However the original pack was assembled, I sincerely appreciate the exchange, burgers, and the time taken with me to honor what they advertise. (I am curious, though. Whatever became of the meat I returned that I had opened and rewrapped? Was it thrown out? Re-cased?) I hope this review helps to clear up any lingering confusion they may have regarding their unfortunate mistake. read more

Busy place! From organic veggies, local and store made sauces to prepared foods and to order meats you get it here!! There's also a nice import choice Italian sodas et al. Not much variety on coke products but lots better choices. Friendly and attentive staff. I will def be back and recommend stopping to anyone! read more

I loved Fred's 80/20 10 lb. bags of ground chuck back in a day, best Hamburg I ever had. I haven't been there in quite a while so driving by the place I decided to stop in and grab a couple of bags. The next day I took it out of the fridge, broke out the patty press and tried to make patties for burgers, there was so much fat that the patty wouldn't form, cold fat doesn't press easily. I've used this press for making burgers with ground beef from every store in the area and never had this problem. Buyer beware, Fred's 80/20 is closer to 65/35. I also bought 4 of the prime rib eye's that day and they were awesome, so not all things are bad, but that ground beef I was so looking forward to broke my heart. read more

Best sirloin, roast beef, chicken salad, and hard rolls around. Always fully staffed. The wait can be a minute but that is because there are so many customers who appreciate the quality. Fantastic little shop - worth the drive! read more

I really love this Fred the Butcher location. They know their meats and help you out immensely choosing select cuts. Everything is done very quickly and friendly. I always get the best hamburgers from there as well. The meats are simply delicious and well marble to cook up flawlessly. I have never gotten a bad piece of meat there, not even close. THE WORST! My husband came home from his first trip to Fred's so excited with his "awesome finds" about an hour ago. Alas, the jumbo shrimp hubby described as "Having their own zip code", are completely spoiled. The moment he opened the bag stinky, rotten fish stench filled the kitchen. So, in the trash they went. That's $14 down the drain. I can only hope that the rest of the over $150 purchase of meat is not likewise spoiled. Turns out the rest of the meat was spoiled as well. Never again. I was always a fan of the Clifton Park location, but it was hard to justify going there for a few things. They had the best chicken feet, gizzards, hearts, beef jerky, and some of the best steaks in the region. I was quite happy when I saw the news that they were going to take over from Falvo's, and was excited to pay them a visit today, a bit after their March 5th grand opening. They expanded parking with a large gravel lot, and the inside went from looking a bit dingy to immaculate and well lit. There was everything there needed to make a full dinner. Potatoes, tomatoes, onions, every cut of meat imaginable, pasta, sauces, pies, cookies, olive oil, smoked salmon, and so much more in a very small footprint. The store did not feel crowded, even with all the people inside. I'm thrilled about the new addition to the Slingerlands/Voorhesville area. read more

For the most part I have been satisfied with certain things that I buy regularyly but twice in the last 3 months I have gotten Tuna Macaroni Salad that was spoiled and Parrecca's pizza that was growing mold on top. Neither which you would notice until it was unwrapped/uncovered. Quality assuance and checking things goes a long way. This have never happened at my local grocery stores. read more

The renovations made to the Falvo's Meat Store, were very well done. The staff at Fred's continues the Falvo's excellent meat choices and services plus more vegetables and spices. The prices are reasonable, given the Choice and Prime grades of meat that are offered. I always go to Fred's for my Holiday and regular meat purchases. The only item offered that needs improvement is their breakfast sausage. The current recipe is devoid of the wonderful spice flavor that was made by Joe (the previous owner, who is still working part-time for Fred). I would hope that the new owners would give Joe a chance to mix up his recipe and see how the sales increase for their sausage. I am of course biased, but Joe's 50 yr.old tried & true recipe mirrors my dad's recipe. My dad worked 45 years as a meat cutting teacher at the Agricultural College, Animal Husbandry school of Cornell University. read more
