Trader Joe's has really nice, store branded goods. Whole Foods has vegan, organic, vegetarian, non-GMO (etc. etc.) items galore. Wegmans has a great selection at very reasonable prices. Shop Rite has some great prices on cleaning products (during sales) and good deals on food items.
But you know what NONE of those places have?
Animatronic animals and produce singing at you.
I mean, I never thought I would see a band of avocados singing about *being* avocados to the tune of "La Cucaracha" but there they were in the produce section. Not too far away was a singing banana. Near the steam tables is a donkey head (or maybe a horse head?) singing about...buying buffalo wings at the steam table. Between trying to figure out the layout of the store (more on that in a bit), dealing with the huge crowds and the singing in the background I felt my attention pulled in several different directions at once. This place was *bonkers*!
To add to the carnival feel of this store, there is a section where they make fresh donuts, another with ice cream cones (which I swear every tenth person I passed had), coffee and even a giant popcorn section. They really do want you to feel like you are at an event, and not just food shopping.
The first section I spent a good amount of time in was the prepared foods area. This section was rather large and one of the most open areas in the store. There's no way to sample everything they make in one day properly without making your stomach explode. I was very impressed with the range of products which included rotisserie chicken, fried chicken, subs, burgers, hot dogs, sushi, Chinese take-out style food, pasta, meatballs, salad and even a wing bar. I wound up having some salad, their in-house slaw and some wings. Everything was delicious. The salad was fresh and crunchy. The slaw was not soggy at all and tasted sweet. The wings were fantastic with good texture and sauces. The key here is that there were a *lot* of people eating at the steam tables, so the food did not sit out for very long. There was constant turnover so everything was nice and fresh.
In terms of actual groceries, Stew Leonard's is a mixed bag. The selection is limited in some respects, but it is enough that you could easily do all your food shopping there in one shot. Some areas are more diverse than others. For instance, they have a wide range of seafood items (including caviar and pre-pulled lobster). Their cheese section had a wide selection (including a truffle cheese which they ran out of that day). In sharp contrast however, they had a very limited produce selection. It was sufficient, but don't expect cotton candy grapes or bock choi here. Even their selection of something as simple as ketchup was limited to a few key brands. I trust these were the product of many years of marketing data, but it would have been cool to see more brands.
Perhaps the biggest drawback of this store, and the reason it lost a whole star in my book, is the layout. Similar in theme to IKEA, they seem to have a specific path that they want you to follow. The path does not utilize traditional aisle layouts you may see at Whole Foods or Shop Rite. This makes for a very confusing time navigating the store. More than once I turned a corner and there to find myself right back where I started. The other, lesser drawback is the lack of a dining area for the steam table food. There is an area in the mall *outside* the store, but that's it. Fortunately the day I went there were enough seats for everyone, but I can imagine it filling up quickly.
I have heard about Stew Leonard's for years now, and I am very happy to have finally experienced the insanity of this store. I do hope to go back at some point. It was a fun experience and I think it is worth visiting at least once. read more
