I've been here a bunch of times, always buying the poultry and the meats there. they had live crabs in the back and they have a lot of prepackaged Hispanic foods from every country you could possibly imagine. They really pack the store and the shelves with as much product as possible. I also bought a bunch of beverages and snacks they were very good. they also have an area that sells hot food and beverages which is also another great thing about it. overall I can't say anything bad about the store. The market is okay in a pinch. Bread,milk, eggs- things you might need to just take a quick run out for. Sometimes the prices are high compared to say, Shop-rite. They do carry a huge variety of ethnic foods so that's a plus. And please!! Just don't park right in front of the store!! It's s fire lane and you'll end up with a $100 ticket! Twice in the past 4 years I've bought shrimp from Paramus Whole Foods, only to find upon my arrival home, after opening the bag, the shrimp was rotten. The second occasion I was hosting a dinner party and really needed the shrimp. My South American spouse made the quick run to Hackensack Market and brought back big, fresh shrimp. Crisis averted. This was my introduction to HM. Meat Variety You can by chicken hearts or livers by the quart. I'm talking about chicken livers that are a dark, maroon color (meaning they came from healthy chickens). They have just about every organ meat from pigs, cows, goats and sheep. I only wish they carried 'cuy'. Produce You can always get good avocados. When the US was suffering from a lack of limes, this place had them. Chiles, fresh and dried. Herbs . . . the only place I've found where I can get fresh epazote. And lots of stuff I've never even heard of. Sundries They have all the stuff you would find in any 'mainstream' North American supermarket. But they also have all kinds of canned and frozen foods, predominantly imported from Mexico, Ecuador and Peru. Numerous varieties of: sugars; aji; huitlacoche; canche & culpe to name a few. They even have frozen tomate de arbol. And again, all kinds of stuff this gringo has never heard of (but wants to try). I haven't tried many of their bakery or pre-prepared foods, but they look good (my wife says it's good, though). Love this place. read more

When i first moved to bergen county i was in the midst of planning my fathers 70 th bday party which i was cooking For. I needed bijol for the rice. I went to shoprite in paramus (hoboken and north bergen shoprites both carry) i went to pathmark in bergenfield (weehawken carries it) and nothing. My bf suggested i try out hackensack market which is practically around the corner and upon walking in i felt at home. It reminded me of mi bandera or la roca back at home (in union city) needless to say i found my bijol amongst other amazing things that are very normal to see in hudson county supermarkets but not as common in bergen county chain markets, (think bocadillo veleño - arequipe alpina - gaseosa Colombiana). This is my go to spot for things on my shopping list that i know i will not find at shoprite Paramus and for fresh meats and seafood. They also have a restaurant attached to it. Empanadas are Nothing really fabulous, I've had better, but we've ordered a few pernil (pork shoulder) from here and they've been excellent. read more

Nice Caribbean market with a butcher, fresh fruit and even fish. There is a tiny restaurant inside the market selling South American food, mostly fried but the standout for me is the ceviche! always delicous and heavy on the lemon/hot sauce. I am surprised this small farmers market on Passaic Street doesn't have more reviews. In my opinion this market is at superior to Giant Farmers Market by River and Main. Hackensack market, has an extensive selection of fresh, clean and great quality produce at very very good prices. The market originally had a sub par butcher department with a funny smell always permeating from the area, but I am happy to say the management has cleaned up its act and the quality of the meat and dpt has improved 10 fold. The market also has a Spanish bakery with prepared foods such as empanadas and fruit drinks. One of the biggest perks is they have a very wide selection of sugar based Mexican colas, such as coke and sprite. Best of all they have NO CREDIT CARD MINIMUM! Great clean local market with friendly service and great products. Def one of the best choices in the area next to Maywood market. read more

I really enjoy coming here. You can find anything Hispanic from all different countries that you cant find in other supermarkets. I love coming here in the mornings when everything is fresh. I never go for the meat section tho because it never smells fresh to me but this is definitely a place that you go to if you need to find anything Spanish. This market had everything you need! Great selection, Western Union, lots of rare finds, international foods, a hot food area (food was delicious $7 for a great portion of rice, beans and chicken) and pharmacy, great meat market and don't forget to check out the insanely CHEAP little packs of tomatoes, onions, peppers etc that they put together for $1-2!! They may have small spots on them but are totally fine and edible! The staff is also very helpful and friendly. Love that such a great market is so close to me! read more

This place has everything "Spanish" that I can't find at the Stop N Shop in Teaneck. Tons of Mexican items for my salsas as well as Dominican items. Great meat section as well. The prices are "ok". I stopped in very recently, since I was house/apt-hunting in the area and am familiar w/ the area, having lived in Hackensack years ago and wanting to return to the area. Had never been in this market and was so pleasantly surprised by the fresh fruits & veggies and MOST OF ALL---NO LOUD MUSIC. Seems that one cannot shop, dine without hearing that loud , loud MUSIC NOISE (i use the term "music" loosely, since mostly the sounds are from "winey" singers w/ not clever, witty lyrics and no melody. Where is Frank, Ella, Nat, etc. when we need them. Oh, I forgot, they are all gone !! I digress, the market is my kind of place, smallish, well laid out. I will definitely use it if/when I move to the area. I do not like "BIG BOX" stores & do not frequent them. The coffee in the small bakery area was fine also. Another thought--with all the positive reviews, I fear the place will be "discovered" and there goes the feel of the place--w/ crowds, pushing & shoving. I was also pleased with the "mood" of the place rather friendly, gracious, with the "excuse me's" and "thank you", just a different feeling than the over-crowded chains and stores in Paterson (a nightmare). Another great place is National Wholesale Liquidators on Esses St @ Rt. 17--very, very good place, although it has been "discovered". Best to go early. read more

My Experience:- Hackensack Market is one of the few market around area which holds many South American item such as, Pony malt from Colombia, Grace products from Jamaica, La Costena product from Mexico and La Cholita product from Ecuador, and many other. Best of all if you cannot find an item, they can do special order for you. I was there like couple of weeks ago and I was looking for Alpina Guava flavored baby food, it was not there. I asked one of the associate to order for me, I gave my contact info and they call me as soon as they received that item. They got the item in the very same week. Fruit and Veggie section looked so fresh and made me buy. Also, the meat-fish departments were pretty organized and the price were cheaper than farm-market. Small down point is the smell near meat-fish departments but if you can compromise that over the products and services they provide ( -Half-Star). Now-days, they also opened up pharmacy call First-Aid Pharmacy. Oh forgot to mansion about frozen section and dairy section with so many good/specialty items from all around the south America and Jamaica.They also offered me FREE delivery to drop of my items and me to near West-wood. Overall I would recommend the place to get all the stuff from Latin America. I guess i'm the lone holdout because I do not agree with the rest of the reviews on here. I knew this wasn't your typical big chain grocery store but oh my God this was not what I expected. I was in the area yesterday so I figured I would give it a try. Upon entering the store, the smells smacked me in the face. Not good smells but terrible odors of dead rotting carcasses of some kind (and dead mice) mixed with rotten food. I reluctantly kept on going thinking I would find an area where I could breathe a little better so I made my way around the store looking at their produce (not great looking), meats (smelled bad and didn't look fresh), fish/seafood (smelled way too fishy not fresh), breads/desserts- some were moldy and had expired due dates. Canned goods and other shelf items looked ok but a lot were so overpriced and this is a shame since it's mostly low income people who shop here. The store was not clean either, like nobody ever took a rag to the shelves or a mop and bucket filled with undiluted bleach to the floors, lol. I was looking for roasted (rotisserie) chicken and I was told they don't sell that which I found strange because they do have a small restaurant. But after going around the store I knew this wasn't the place for me to buy anything. I grew up poor in the Bronx so I know what it's like to shop in places that are not beautifully displayed. They didn't have Whole Foods, Food Emporium, Trader Joe's, Stop N Shop, Acme, anywhere nearby so I had to make do with your typical bodegas and C-town which was not great either but at least it didn't smell horrible like this Market. There is no reason to have a food store this small looking a hot mess, dirty and stinky like this. Unfortunately some people do not have the transportation or the means to get to better stores and that's sad. If I were in that situation and I had a gas mask and really needed a few of their otherwise hard to find items then I would probably venture to come back. I'll stick to my local Shop Rite which has some of the best prices I have ever seen, fresh produce and great cuts of meat. read more
