A place where you can feel pampered and in a place with an atmosphere of solitude and tranquillity with the use of Serene Victorian Turkish Suite, Steam room and saunas and Victorian slipper baths and hot tubs (which are gender segregated see link for more details*) Its got a bar in which they host occasional small concerts and since its run by its members, anyone can propose something special for the space. It has awesome rings and trapeze over the pool that is as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. They have a slightly cooler pool that is filtered with charcoal filters and UV so that they don't need to use harsh chemicals, so an all round nicer experience than your regular pool and possibly better for those with sensitive skin. The gym up stairs (formally the Billiards/Snooker Hall) hold a good range of equipment and should fit your needs should you want to burn some calories or work on those glutes! Ill end in saying that a little more expensive it may be than your regular pool but it is SO worth it, so check out the memberships options, get a free pass or come in on doors open day, you wont regret it. Also there is a lovely naturist swimming session on a Sunday after 6 if you want to have a nice skinny dip in the pool to unwind and rejuvenate. enjoy.x http://www.arlingtonbaths.co.uk/facilities/swimming-turkish-and-gym-timetable

To say this place is old school doesn't really cover it. From the swimming trunks on pegs in the main reception to the shoe hall just through the double doors. This place is steeped in the tradition and the way things used to be done.....not sure if this is by design or if they simply cant be bothered to change things... With amenities such as a decent sized pool, which i might add has a trapeze and ring swings, a sauna, gym and snooker room, reading room and bar. The Arlington offers a full experience. The one thing that does set this place apart from other gyms has to be the Turkish room which has to be scene. Its a wonderfully hot room with a spectacular stained glass ceiling, a real treat. A great place if a little grubby and in need of a little decorative TLC.

However, the magnificent building, situated near the University, is misleadingly-titled given that it is actually a fully-functioning leisure centre, with a gym, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches, Turkish suite, aerobics studio and a range of classes (some of which are also available to non-members). The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. Measuring 30ft, it is frequented by swimmers of all levels, as well as plenty of kids who love diving from the boards or swinging on the travelling rings and trapeze ropes. With the bar having recently had a lick of paint as well, the Western is an all-encompassing venue which many of the members consider to be a second home. For me, it'd probably turn into 600 quid a year for two games of 5s, but for the more dedicated among you, definitely worth checking out.

I've not been in any of the rest of the building so can only comment on the pool - I really like coaching here, the hall is beautiful, although it can get very warm standing at the side! Like other older baths, the Western baths has a trapeze and rings which I have never seen anyone use but you can watch on youtube if you want to see it done! Note the pool is 30 yards so a length will take you a bit longer than expected. To other coach type people, climbing the stairs up to the trapeze platform gives you an excellent alternative angle from which to watch people swim - best tip from last week!

The layout is a tiny bit confusing but basically it's spread across two floors. On the ground floor is the brasserie (open to non-members but I've not tried it yet), the changing rooms and the 25 meter long pool. Alongside the pool are three spa pools; one cooler one and two warmer ones, as well as a sauna and a steam room. The pool is very clean and not overly heavily used, although some lessons and classes take place here. Upstairs there's a large free weights area as well as a few weight machines and the main cardio gym. There's also a studio, a spinning room and a second "mini-gym" which has a smaller number of cardio machines and a few weights. I'm not sure why a mini-gym is necessary but it's hand to know it's there when things get busy. I've never seen any of these areas excessively busy but I don't go at peak times - they do have signs up saying that at peaks times members should limit their workout on a cardio machine to 20 minutes, so that suggests demand gets quite high. They run a lot of fitness classes through the week, designed to suit a wide variety of goals. These need to be booked in advance since they sometimes get busy. You can also book them on the day at the front desk if they have any spaces left. So far I've only tried the yoga but I enjoyed it and I'll definitely have a go at a few other things. The staff are friendly and helpful and they'll happily walk you through how to use any equipment you're not familiar with. Fitness plans are available for members who can also get discounts on things like physio. As gyms go I think this is one of the better ones.

They're chatty, friendly, full of information - and if they can't tell you something then they go out of their way to find someone who can. I've had pool guards politely step in to help teach my son and daughter to swim - just little tips to help the parental lessons. When I turned up without change for the pool lockers (it's a £1 coin), a member of staff took 90-something pence from me and told me not to worry about the pennies. The gym is good and personal trainers are available, and the main hall is used frequently for sporting tuition and markets. Even the canteen is pleasant with its view of the pool. Quibbles? The car park often gets rammed due to sheer popularity and you have to be at least 16 (I think) to look after another child in the swimming pool. This makes it a little awkward for me to take all three of our kids unless my wife joins us. The gym is a small, compared to Bellahouston and lacks much in the way of free weights: most of the space is given over to cardiovascular equipment like treadmills. But, it has the little TV screens on each item, so you can watch Jeremy Kyle as you pound out the miles. The swimming pool is the big attraction- it has a smaller pool for kids, with rapids and a circuit that turns into a desperate race against the artificial tide. There are also jacuzzis by this pool, which end up being the main attraction. Most people fit in their lengths of the main pool when the jacuzzi is switched off to be refreshed. The sauna and jacuzzi suite is larger- and even more popular. The first time I went there, I noticed many men standing at the large windows that look over the pool. "That's odd," I thought. "I wouldn't stand over there, in case the people in the pool below thought I was leching at the women in bikinis." Well, at least I can get a steam room to myself.

Mondays have become our day for swimming. Only one week into this routine our plan was threatened by a "must do" errand in town (parking permits - a much resented bite into a weekday every year). The Gorbals Leisure Centre was our plan's Savior: park at the pool wander into town and then come back for a nice swim. It is very close to town. The reception desk lady was very grumpy. She took my failure to find my purse (in my other bag - though I didn't know that til later) as an attempt to fraudulate and demanded some proof of identity. She prompted me to ask for tickets for the kids despite it being obvious that both were well under 5 (under 5s are free the girls are both just turned 2) and that there were two of them. The water in the pool seemed pretty cold but that could just be that my toddler now enjoys swimming on her own with leaves me standing doing not very much. It seemed to have good facilities for disabled people (better than I have noticed in Bellahouston or Scotstoun but that could just be because there was someone using them today) However, not so good for babies/ toddlers, less facilities. Although it does have a couple of those play - what do you call ems - baby jails. The defining experience, for me, was that they have a play area for under 5s but it is ineffectively coned off; dirty and on further enquiry: not safe. If my daughter could write this review it might have gone along the lines of- "We went to the swimming pool. There was an amazing looking set of wee slides and pool and a fun bubble pool. My mum stopped me from going in any of these amazing looking environments. I made it quite clear to everyone I was unimpressed with her behaviour." Or maybe she would just tell you that she played with some woggles and a float; she went round and round in a circle (in the circular current thingy); that the lifeguard had to dive in because a wee girl was maybe drowning; oh and also that she climbed inside a locker and giggled quite a lot. Dunno? But we won't be going back, at least not until I have another rubbish errand to run in the town centre and really want to go swimming that day ...

Turns out, Glasgow has an International standard swimming centre with a 50m pool and smaller warm-up pool, all the mod cons! It's an impressive venue that was recently modernised so it was perfect for the Commonwealth Games (the world championships will be held there next year too). I spent 6 days as a Clydesider at this venue, most of it outside welcoming and directing spectators through the rather lovely Tollcross park (which features an international rose garden, gorgeous on those sunny days), a gem of the East End for sure. I'm not a big swimmer but if you are, the pool re-opens mid-August to the public so head along - can't promise the atmosphere will be quiet the same though, no Clydesiders to welcome you, nor 5000 manic fans screaming you home down that last length!

It now boasts not one, but two 50m pools providing training facilities for local swim clubs while still allowing casual swimmers a chance to get a few lengths in. The training pool also offers disabled access into the water. On top of this, there's a shallow kiddies pool for a wee gentle splish splash. Although the title suggests this is solely a swimming centre, they also provide an extensive programme of gym classes and have upgraded the gym with newer state-of-the-art equipment. Add on a couple of halls available to hire for badminton and the likes and it's a pretty well rounded gym facility in my view. Being part of the Glasgow Club, you can either pay per visit or sign up for a monthly membership giving you access to all other GC gyms across the city (people living in Glasgow and working for certain employers have the additional option of a Corporate membership which is cheaper still!). Lockers are 20p here, you may wonder why am I telling you this, but lockers vary in price from one Glasgow Club to another (I really wish they would standardise this!) but if you're caught short of cash, don't fret, there's an ATM outside. There's also a café for a post-workout refuel.
