Another one of the leisure complexes operated by Glasgow City Council, the Gorbals Leisure Centre is situated just a short walk across the Clyde from Glasgow city centre. It is also near Bridge Street underground so it is quite easily reached. There is a pretty large car park too, which is free to use and usually has several empty spaces available (but just don't tell anyone this or soon every man and his dog will be parking here, you know what folk are like).
The main attraction is probably the swimming pool. While it is very good for kids, having a small 'fun pool' complete with flume and wave machine, it is not so well-suited to the serious swimmer. Really because the main pool is too short in length and far too shallow. Swimmers would be better off going to the much bigger pool at Scotstoun. However, it is at least fairly quiet outwith the weekends.
The Gorbals' gym is rather small, but it has a good array of clean, modern equipment, including about a dozen treadmills, for both cardio-vascular work and weight training. During weekdays it is never too busy, but weekends and evenings can see a bit of a fight for the machines - be warned. The freeweights area is definitely far too small for the amount of people using it, with the result that you can accidentally clobber someone in the face with a dumbbell if you are not careful. However all the machines in the gym are relatively straightforward to use and help is available from an instructor if required. There is also a good few televisions on the wall playing music videos, perfect if you are someone like me who enjoys something to listen to while they work out but doesn't like to be locked out of the outside world listening to their iPod.
With several indoor sports courts, a health suite and various exercise clubs also available on the site, there is a good bit of everything at the Gorbals Leisure Centre. The membership prices are a bit steep but they are in common with all GCC facilities so I guess there isn't much choice really. I would definitely recommend this leisure centre, even though it is somewhat let down by its swimming pool. read more
