There is also the unmistakable and inexcusable smell of sewage coming up from the drains. The place really needs upgrading. It's a shame really because Whitehill is my nearest swimming pool. Laps is what I like to do the best and it's ideal because there are quiet periods where I can sometimes even have the pool to myself. It's just a shame that the facilities are so poor!

There was a rule that you had to arrive at the gym an hour and a half before it closed or entry would be denied. The changing rooms had a really bad smell as they had not been cleaned in some time with the toilets being a disgrace where l had to bring in scented toilet blocks to mask the stench. Some staff could be rude towards members, there was never politeness or any personal touch. When my membership ended l went elsewhere l would never recommend this gym. If there was a minus rating here i would kindly give them a minus 1 star.

Having never been on the pitches I won't comment on these. The complex is easy to find off Maryhill Road, and has its own parking lot. Sometimes this can get quite busy but there is space on a gravel section where you can park if all the spots are gone. Walking through the car park, be sure to watch out for flying footballs from the pitches as this tends to happen quite a bit. Inside the building is pretty basic. There's a foyer area where people are always milling about, change rooms and toilets for getting ready. These areas are somewhat well kept, I think they could lift their game a little bit. The hall is the part I am most familiar with, and love for sentimental reasons. This is where I first started training to play roller derby so I have many happy memories from training here with Glasgow Roller Derby. I've been back a couple of times recently for extra training sessions. The hall isn't perfect by any stretch - the floor has some bolts and rough patches in part but generally it is kept clean and tidy. They're very prompt at closing at 10 so be sure to get yourself out and into your car quick smart - once all the lights in the car park are off, this area can seem a little scary.

The complex can accommodate individuals in the fitness room which also hosts exercise classes and it can also host doubles in badminton and short tennis. If you like a game of football then the large pitches can accommodate up to 100 people - lots of teams. I've been to some of the exercises classes and I really enjoyed them. The instructor was great; she worked the class hard but I left feeling fit and very proud of myself :-)

They're chatty, friendly, full of information - and if they can't tell you something then they go out of their way to find someone who can. I've had pool guards politely step in to help teach my son and daughter to swim - just little tips to help the parental lessons. When I turned up without change for the pool lockers (it's a £1 coin), a member of staff took 90-something pence from me and told me not to worry about the pennies. The gym is good and personal trainers are available, and the main hall is used frequently for sporting tuition and markets. Even the canteen is pleasant with its view of the pool. Quibbles? The car park often gets rammed due to sheer popularity and you have to be at least 16 (I think) to look after another child in the swimming pool. This makes it a little awkward for me to take all three of our kids unless my wife joins us. Talking of kids, if you live in Glasgow make sure they sign up for their free "Kidz Card" as it gives whopping discounts here.

For something a bit different, table tennis is only £4 a table to rent - for an unlimited time. The challenge is how long you can take advantage of that offer before you get bored out of your mind.

I paid a second visit in the form of the Cannie Gingers versus the Parma Violents Roller Derby match. (GO, BRIONY, GO!) This time round, I can honestly say that as a sporting venue, it's fabulous for events. The main hall was a really good size, perfect for the various Roller Derby team stalls and the spectators were treated to bleachers, meaning you could get a great view of the action from wherever you were seated. (I really loved this, it made me feel like I was at an All-American game!) The hall's size meant minimal queuing so we really were in in no time! Whilst I can't comment on the ticketing and organisation side of things, as that was all done by Roller Derby, (They did a really good job!) the venue really did feel suited to the day and made for an all-round great experience. I can't say I'm completely enamoured by the Peak just yet since there was a leak just above my spot which meant avoiding the drips during the game! (Eek!) But in all fairness, I do think that it deserves some props for managing to host bigger scale events, similar to those held in larger cities. I may well come and try that ice rink. We were in the main hall which has banked seating at one end for a crowd which was good although normally a crowd would sit along the long side of the track rather than the bend. The floor itself is a normal basketball court and was very good for skating on. The changing rooms we used were very clean and fit in about 20 of us while we got ready for the game. The staff made sure to lock the room while we were playing so we didn't have to worry about our valuables which was appreciated. There was a good amount of toilet facilities which meant there weren't any queues at halftime. In the foyer area there's a shop as well as a cafe and a climbing wall which I didn't notice until we were on our way out (clearly I was too focused on the game). The car park was large enough that we got a spot easily and didn't have to wait ages to leave the car park again at the end, and it was easy to get to from Glasgow. All round, an impressive venue.

Unfortunately I can't afford private gym membership so I use the Meadow Centre (which is a local council gym) on a pay as you go basis. It has a swimming pool complete with wave machine and flume but also has a section for lane swimming, as well as a steam room and a sauna. There are sports courts for badminton, football, basketball etc, a 68 piece gym and a number of fitness classes. I mostly use this gym for the swimming pool, the steam room and the kettlersize and hips, bums and tums fitness classes. I love the classes and I genuinely look forward to them every week. The trainer is friendly and enthusiastic without being annoying! The classes are kept to a nice small size (about 15 people) and the equipment (kettle bells, floor mats etc.) are in good condition. At the end of the day it's a square room to jump about it and sweat so I'm quite happy doing that for a fraction of the price of a private gym! It's £4.50 per class on a pay as you go basis and there are a variety of full membership options available. The ability to book your fitness classes online is invaluable!

I used to come to the Time Capsule every Saturday morning between the ages of 9 - 11. This was when…read morethey held the childrens ice-skating, where you could skate around and they also held a little dancing on ice disco where the leader showed us some moves and we had to copy. After this wild workout everyone got a little paper bag full of tuck shops sweets, it was great! After the ice-skating my dad usually took us to the swimming pool, the river rapids were my favourite part and I could swim here for hours. I particularly remember the scary red dragon statue and the cave men who looked down on your when you were swimming round the pool, one of them was wielding a spear which I have to admit, was a little bit scary. They also have a huge play area with ball pools, slides, climbing walls - it just looks amazing. Unfortunately, my parents never let me go here and I feel that I've missed out. At the moment the play area pool is closed for major refurbishment, who knows what it will look like when it's finished? I think I might take a trip back soon for good old times sakes. A fantastic day out for all the family!
