This place conjures up memories of soggy plasters, verrucas and old overweight ladies showering…read morewith their baps out - but isn't that the case with most local swimming pools? Whitehill Pool is pretty much just that; one big pool and a tiny kids pool where the "deep end" reaches just above my waist. There are no chutes here; no flumes; no frills; no fun! As basic as it is, it serves its purpose if you're simply looking to swim a few lengths, however I'd advise getting in early if you want to avoid dive bombing dafties and lane hogging old ladies.

What can I say? It does what it says on the tin. Whitehill pool is great if you just want to swim a…read morefew laps but you have to go early or late to avoid little children getting in the way. The biggest issue I have with Whitehill pool is the cleanliness of the changing rooms and also the temperature. I know it's normal for it to be cold when you get out of the swimming pool but this is something else. It is absolutely FREEZING and not only the but the showers are old and unpredictable and go from being BOILING to FREEZING in a matter of seconds. There is also the unmistakable and inexcusable smell of sewage coming up from the drains. The place really needs upgrading. It's a shame really because Whitehill is my nearest swimming pool. Laps is what I like to do the best and it's ideal because there are quiet periods where I can sometimes even have the pool to myself. It's just a shame that the facilities are so poor!

Bellahouston Leisure Centre - Lots of keen children great to see

They're chatty, friendly, full of information - and if they can't tell you something then they go out of their way to find someone who can. I've had pool guards politely step in to help teach my son and daughter to swim - just little tips to help the parental lessons. When I turned up without change for the pool lockers (it's a £1 coin), a member of staff took 90-something pence from me and told me not to worry about the pennies. The gym is good and personal trainers are available, and the main hall is used frequently for sporting tuition and markets. Even the canteen is pleasant with its view of the pool. Quibbles? The car park often gets rammed due to sheer popularity and you have to be at least 16 (I think) to look after another child in the swimming pool. This makes it a little awkward for me to take all three of our kids unless my wife joins us. Talking of kids, if you live in Glasgow make sure they sign up for their free "Kidz Card" as it gives whopping discounts here.

However, that being said, it was about time that they extended the gym, and so far, it really has helped - unless you go at peak times and the sports teams are practicing and the changing rooms are stupidly full and all the weights are in use. My tiny little pet peeve, which you should know about, is that people will never put the weights back in their proper order, so be prepared to go on a hunt for matching weights. Also, the new floor exercise/stretching sections are always busy, and one of them is contained in milkglass - but with an opening which, if that's the mat you're training on, will make you feel incredibly on display! There is always a Trainer walking around, so if you have any questions about the exercises or if you want a new exercise to spice up your session, they will be able to help. Generally, the staff is very approachable and usually very friendly. I haven't attended any of the classes yet; they've introduced a new system of grabbing a little token which you then hand to the instructor. I have yet to find out how it works.

However, the magnificent building, situated near the University, is misleadingly-titled given that it is actually a fully-functioning leisure centre, with a gym, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches, Turkish suite, aerobics studio and a range of classes (some of which are also available to non-members). The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. Measuring 30ft, it is frequented by swimmers of all levels, as well as plenty of kids who love diving from the boards or swinging on the travelling rings and trapeze ropes. With the bar having recently had a lick of paint as well, the Western is an all-encompassing venue which many of the members consider to be a second home. For me, it'd probably turn into 600 quid a year for two games of 5s, but for the more dedicated among you, definitely worth checking out.

I've not been in any of the rest of the building so can only comment on the pool - I really like coaching here, the hall is beautiful, although it can get very warm standing at the side! Like other older baths, the Western baths has a trapeze and rings which I have never seen anyone use but you can watch on youtube if you want to see it done! Note the pool is 30 yards so a length will take you a bit longer than expected. To other coach type people, climbing the stairs up to the trapeze platform gives you an excellent alternative angle from which to watch people swim - best tip from last week!
