The gym is amazing - there's a wooden deadlift platform at the back and a strip of artificial grass for a Prowler (which is a new bit of gym equipment to me, but one that I really like already) as well as all the usual kit - a couple of rowing machines, kettle bells, dumbbells, bars, racks, benches, all that stuff. He's got several classes a day which are all included in your gym membership - strength training, conditioning, olympic lifting, Ladies Who Lift, strongman training, even two yoga sessions a week. It's a large, open space and it's a really fantastic environment to train in. There are also a couple of new members of staff and everybody is super friendly. The trainers are professional yet a lot of fun and everybody gets along really well - there are no big egos here. They run client days out every few weeks (laser tag, rock climbing, I'm sure they're open to any daft suggestions you have) and it actually feels like you're part of a really friendly gym community. If you're looking for a place to lift some weights, get fit and have a lot of fun at the same time (especially if you're a woman who is thinking of doing more strength training, I can't recommend Ladies Who Lift highly enough), then this is the gym for you.

    As promised, here's my review update now that I've finished the 6 week programme with AG Fitness…read more The first few weeks were coached with a strong focus on form and getting movements right, which I really enjoyed. As I'm a little bit out of fitness it was nice to get back into correct squatting position and deadlifts. Then in the second part of the programme we moved into a more full on workout - a 45 minute weightlifting session followed by some high intensive interval cardio sessions on the bike/rowing machine. OUCH. These are seriously a killer after you've already done a workout but they definitely feel like they're working. He'll also give you a programme to do in the house/at the gym for extra training other than seeing him which is great. I really enjoy that Andy takes the time at the start of our sessions to sit down and talk through what we've been eating that week. I'm terrible at keeping a food journal but if you did keep one, he'd look over it for you and suggest small tweeks for improvement. He isn't too focused on weight loss and instead is really encouraging about improvement in terms of form and strength which is really positive - we both leave our sessions feeling pretty damn good (even if we are in a load of pain). For the price (£185 for 6 weeks, 1 session per week for two people), I think it's worth the money. Andy is always on hand for advice (he has suggested that I can text him for food advice if I'm eating out, I haven't taken him up on that yet!) and Graeme & I enjoy getting trained together. The other reason I enjoy it is because (in my mind) it's a non-negotiable date in my diary that I can't get out of, so it's good to keep you going week-on-week. The gym where Andy trains from (Edenfit) is normally pretty quiet - on a Monday night, you're lucky if there's more than 3 other people there. I can't fault the facilities even though they aren't particularly slick or modern - they're functional, and that's what counts. Update as of August 2015: Andy is now temporarily based at a gym in the West End as Edenfit closed down. He's looking at getting his own specialised gym set up soon!

There is a good range though, from cardio machines, to weight machines, plenty of free weights, as well as a fitness centre with punch bag, TRX system and more. Single change rooms too, rather than common ones, and parking on street is usually ok (again, pick your times). I've been a few times now, gotta work off those Yelp inspired pounds, and I love the vibe of the place, plus it's close to where I live!

You can even plug in external devices and usb's if you want to catch up with a favourite series. You can grab one of the treadmills by the window, if you really want that hamster wheel effect! There's 24 hour opening so you can come and go as you please. As the gym isn't staffed round the clock there's a secure entry system to stop folk sneaking in. As stated previously, it is a small gym, so you may have to wait for equipment during busy times. I didn't use the personal trainer service they have on offer, so I can't really comment on the staff. Once I was signed up & given the tour, they left me to do my own thing as I was pretty familiar with the machines. The gym offers 6 & 12 month membership plans. You can also use any of their locations worldwide should you fancy a workout on holiday or in case you get shipped abroad by your boss!

    The Nuffield Health gym in Finnieston is a medium sized, really well equipped gym with almost…read moreeverything you could hope for easily available. The layout is a tiny bit confusing but basically it's spread across two floors. On the ground floor is the brasserie (open to non-members but I've not tried it yet), the changing rooms and the 25 meter long pool. Alongside the pool are three spa pools; one cooler one and two warmer ones, as well as a sauna and a steam room. The pool is very clean and not overly heavily used, although some lessons and classes take place here. Upstairs there's a large free weights area as well as a few weight machines and the main cardio gym. There's also a studio, a spinning room and a second "mini-gym" which has a smaller number of cardio machines and a few weights. I'm not sure why a mini-gym is necessary but it's hand to know it's there when things get busy. I've never seen any of these areas excessively busy but I don't go at peak times - they do have signs up saying that at peaks times members should limit their workout on a cardio machine to 20 minutes, so that suggests demand gets quite high. They run a lot of fitness classes through the week, designed to suit a wide variety of goals. These need to be booked in advance since they sometimes get busy. You can also book them on the day at the front desk if they have any spaces left. So far I've only tried the yoga but I enjoyed it and I'll definitely have a go at a few other things. The staff are friendly and helpful and they'll happily walk you through how to use any equipment you're not familiar with. Fitness plans are available for members who can also get discounts on things like physio. As gyms go I think this is one of the better ones.

A place where you can feel pampered and in a place with an atmosphere of solitude and tranquillity with the use of Serene Victorian Turkish Suite, Steam room and saunas and Victorian slipper baths and hot tubs (which are gender segregated see link for more details*) Its got a bar in which they host occasional small concerts and since its run by its members, anyone can propose something special for the space. It has awesome rings and trapeze over the pool that is as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. They have a slightly cooler pool that is filtered with charcoal filters and UV so that they don't need to use harsh chemicals, so an all round nicer experience than your regular pool and possibly better for those with sensitive skin. The gym up stairs (formally the Billiards/Snooker Hall) hold a good range of equipment and should fit your needs should you want to burn some calories or work on those glutes! Ill end in saying that a little more expensive it may be than your regular pool but it is SO worth it, so check out the memberships options, get a free pass or come in on doors open day, you wont regret it. To say this place is old school doesn't really cover it. From the swimming trunks on pegs in the main reception to the shoe hall just through the double doors. This place is steeped in the tradition and the way things used to be done.....not sure if this is by design or if they simply cant be bothered to change things... With amenities such as a decent sized pool, which i might add has a trapeze and ring swings, a sauna, gym and snooker room, reading room and bar. The Arlington offers a full experience. The one thing that does set this place apart from other gyms has to be the Turkish room which has to be scene. Its a wonderfully hot room with a spectacular stained glass ceiling, a real treat. A great place if a little grubby and in need of a little decorative TLC.

I used to go to the gym, but I was bored. I had a routine, I did it, I came home and was a bit unenthused about the whole thing. A friend suggested I try Crossfit. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into, but when I walked into Crossfit Glasgow, I knew that this would be different. Crossfit is tucked away in one of the arches under the train lines, in Tradeston. Before you become a full member, you need to do a Fundamentals course of 5 classes (£35 for the 5 classes) covering the basic skills you need to be able to do a Crossfit class. These are normally small group classes of about 4-8 people per class and involve the basic skills of weightlifting, squats and a few other crucial movements. Fundamentals are great to get really helpful pointers on your movements and be corrected if you were doing anything wrong, to minimise the chance of injury (and looking like an idiot). Don't be fooled though: these classes end with a killer workout and you will be sweating like a beast once it's over. Once you "graduate" Fundamentals (my words, not theirs!) you will be able to go along to the normal scheduled classes. Essentially what happens is you turn up for a timetabled class, and have an instructor guide you through that day's workout. So no picking and choosing, and no coming up with your own routine. It's called the Workout of the Day (WOD) and can be a real mixed bag of pain and/or torture. There are 8 classes a day spread out from 6.15am to 7.15pm. If you are competent enough, you can work out in the open gym at other times of the day. There is a lot of codewords and exercises you'll never have heard of if you're new to Crossfit. But it's a friendly environment where people will help you out if you ask. The coaches are super supportive and encouraging, and will push you to keep going when you really want to give up. Returning to my original point is that I stopped going to Crossfit because I was poor (it is £30 per month for two visits per week) and also a little bit lazy. If you want somewhere that's going to challenge you and give you an awesome buzz from lifting up heavy things, then Crossfit might be the gym for you.

I got a 24 hour pass online for £5 to go for a look around and a go of the machines as well. The gym is easy to get to on Cathcart Road and has it's own private car park. We visited at a peak time and there was loads of spots so that's always good to know. To enter you need a pin number and then you stand in a very futuristic pod thing to be let in. You can sign up in the front area as well, in case you aren't already a member. There are lockers in the main area which means they are inside the secure doors, and visible to the whole gym. This was one of my worries about going to a 24 hour gym as I've heard horror stories about people's stuff being stolen - this seems like it might not be an issue here as you'd have to be pretty brazen to steal someone's stuff right in front of everyone. The machines are laid out in one main area which is huge - there is rows and rows of treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, rowing machines as well as a free weight area and machines. Then there's a proper weightlifting room if you're into lifting the heavy stuff. All the equipment I want to use is here, and they also have free classes (as well as some paid ones). There was a good mix of people and by that I mean it wasn't a total gym-wank gym so most people should feel quite comfortable here. The music was bad, but when is gym music good? Bring your own headphones and you'll be fine. I would have ranked this place a 4 star quite happily, but I needed some help from the staff when getting my padlock set up. She was so super helpful and nice about my extreme stupidity that it gets bumped up to a 5 star.

For less than half the price of what I…read morewas paying before I get loads in the way of cardio stuff, loads of resistance machines and a good sized space for doing body weight stuff. There's also a really big free weights section, but I haven't used that yet. The facilities are really good: nice and bright with a good changing area, loads of lockers, and good quality equipment that hasn't been battered about yet. I've not dealt with the staff yet, but they all look really friendly. There are personal trainers there, and the details are on the wall, but it would be great if there were prices up there as well. It's probably on the website, but something at the gym would be great. All in, this is a brilliant deal. For the price, you get membership for here and the one in the city centre, which is an absolute bargain. If you're looking for a new gym definitely give it a go.

I used to be really self conscious when I was younger and went to the gym, I really didn't like carrying all that 'festive weights' and trying to get rid of it in front of people would clearly didn't need to. Now I don't care at all but Fitness First for women would have been great for me back then. The gym itself is so accessible being on Sauchiehall st so whether you are shopping, at uni or work, it is easy to get to, and even maybe for a pre-going out gym boost. I went to this gym on a free day trial, which you can get from the website. I liked my experience because no matter what, its nice to have a minute or two when you don't have to bother about your appearance. I didn't get a membership here because I would rather go to the gym with my boyfriend than by myself, and the membership fees are pretty steep for the facilities you get. But most in the city centre are, you are paying to save your time and be away from those terrible boys. :)

As soon as i entered i was by two smiley lovely girls who were chatty, i then asked were the changing rooms were as i hadn't been before and they were more than happy to give me a quick tour! The gym itself is a nice size not too big or intimidating, there is plenty of the usual equipment treadmills, cross trainers etc. There was also the usual weight machines but these were a bit dated and the resistance felt a bit weird to the more modern ones im used to, but nevertheless they did the job! I liked the fact the had punch bags and mitts etc meant i could take my frustration out!!! One more machine the had was the 'power plate' i had never been on one of these but had heard quite alot about them- like they give you a full body work out in 10 minutes. I saw a few women using it then fort i would have a go myself! There was a chart on the wall showing all the varying positions and techniques to make the most of the machine. I chose the positions and intensity then pressed start.... I have never experienced anything like it in my life i hated it!! the intensity was soo high i could feel my muscles rippling my eyesight was going funny n everything! I was supposed to hold it for 60 seconds but couldnt handle it haha! I take my hat off too anyone who can use it more than 1 minute!! :P
